Abstract:Phase measuring profilometry based on structured illumination with a digital projector has great flexibility. However, the phase error introduced by the gamma nonlinearity of the projector and the presence of speckle noise inevitably decreases the accuracy and resolution of the measurement. This paper presents a new phase error correction algorithm by which the odd-step fringe projection is done twice with an initial phase shift of π between, and the two captured deformed fringe images are then digitally subtracted. The speckle noise is further suppressed by applying a sine-cosine median filter. Both theoretical analysis and experimental results showed that this algorithm is effective and fast.

Abstract:Fringe projection profilometry is a significant method for three-dimensional measurement due to its non-contact and high accuracy. However, the motion-induced error will lead to the loss of measurement accuracy in dynamic scenes due to the disruption of the phase measurement process. In this paper, we introduce a novel motion error model that considers object motion causes the misalignment of the projection points on the camera, and propose the projection points tracking method to reduce the motion-induced error. First, the speckle pattern is added to projection sequences, after which the projection point displacements are determined using the digital image correlation (DIC) method between the adjacent speckle patterns. Finally, the fringe patterns are corrected using the image remapping method to calculate the 3D shape. Quantitative analysis and dynamic measurement experiments verify the feasibility of the proposed method. Different from 3D-DIC, we use one camera-projector system to realize high-accuracy measurement in dynamic scenes.

Abstract:The nonlinear errors caused by the gamma effect seriously affect the measurement accuracy of phase-measuring profilometry systems. We present a novel robust end-to-end pattern optimization technology for phase-height mapping. This method generates standard sinusoidal patterns on the reference plane on a camera image instead of on a projection image by optimizing the projection image, which can avoid phase errors due to phase conversion from projector to camera. The pixel set mapping is achieved by chessboard calibration; then the projection image is optimized with the multiscale optimization method and the dislocation optimization method based on proportional integral derivative control. The experiments show that the proposed method can effectively avoid the influence of nonlinear effect and achieve high-quality three-dimensional measurement.

Abstract:Based on the relative position relationship between the measured object and the high-frequency fringe in the on-line three-dimensional (3D) measurement, an improved dual-frequency on-line 3D measurement method is proposed. By controlling the acquisition points when the measured object moves, the light intensity distribution of the high-frequency fringe in each deformed pattern after pixel matching can be exactly consistent. The full-cycle equal phase-shift algorithm is directly applied for phase calculation so that the filtering process is avoided and the 3D reconstruction accuracy is improved. The light intensity component of the high-frequency fringe is designed to be much smaller than that of the low-frequency fringe, and it can be considered as faint background light and the interference of high-frequency fringe on phase calculation is further reduced. The simulated and experimental results show that compared with other methods, the proposed method can improve the reconstruction accuracy effectively.

Abstract:Fringe-pattern profilometry (FPP) has been widely used for phase reconstruction. It involves the use of phase shifting for phase retrieval. Phase-shift errors can affect the accuracy of phase reconstruction, and limited studies have been dedicated to studying phase-shift errors due to experimental, human, or environmental factors. We propose a simple and yet accurate phase-shift estimation method. Our study shows that the method is able to accurately estimate the actual phase shifts used in the FPP technique. The proposed method can find its applications in FPP and other phase shifting-based three-dimensional imaging techniques.

Abstract:In the field of fringe projection profilometry, phase sensitivity is a critical factor influencing the precision of object measurements. Traditional techniques that employ basic horizontal or vertical fringe projection often do not achieve optimal levels of phase sensitivity. The identification of the fringe angle that exhibits optimal phase sensitivity has been a significant area of research. The present study introduces a novel method for determining the optimal fringe angle, facilitating 3D reconstruction without the need for equipment adjustments. Initially, the optimal fringe is derived through mathematical analysis, and the system's position within each coordinate system is standardized, leading to the determination of the optimal fringe angle in the world coordinate system. Subsequently, an optimal fringe pattern, akin to that produced by a rotating projector, is generated based on the concept of rotation around a central point, with corresponding adjustments made to the calibration parameters. Finally, the optimal fringe is projected onto the target object for 3D reconstruction, thereby validating the proposed method. The experimental results demonstrate that this approach accurately identifies the optimal fringe angle, significantly enhancing both phase sensitivity and measurement accuracy. The accuracy of the measurement is significantly greater, by an order of magnitude, compared to the traditional method, with the error being approximately 50% of that associated with the currently established improved method.

Abstract:Abstract In the fast 3D shape measurement of complex objects, the process of phase unwrapping affects the measurement accuracy and measurement speed. To omit phase unwrapping, a fast 3D shape measurement method is proposed based on S-transform profilometry and sub-pixel refinement. In this work, Deformed fringe pattern is analyzed based on S-transform to get wrapped phase. To reduce the effect of phase unwrapping, a stereo vision system is employed. Firstly, a deformed fringe pattern is directly used and a hybrid function is proposed to get an initial parallax. Secondly, a phase slope algorithm is proposed to confirm edge point. At last, sub-pixel parallax is refined fromIcoordinate. Experiments are carried out to verify the feasibility and advantage of the proposed method. Results verify that the proposed method can provide fast and accurate 3D shape measurement of complex objects, especially for discontinuous objects and shiny objects.

Abstract:Phase-shifting profilometry (PSP) is the most widely used wrapped phase extraction method due to the advantages of high accuracy and resolution, robust to noise. However, due to the local specular reflection of the measured surfaces and the limited camera dynamic range, some pixels of the captured fringes become intensity saturated, thus introducing wrapped phase error. In this work, we simulate the Fourier spectrum of the saturated fringe and represent the saturated fringe approximately by a third-order Fourier series. Subsequently, we establish the saturation-induced wrapped phase error model. According to this model, it can be found that for the N-step phase-shifting method, the spatial frequency of the saturation-induced wrapped phase error is N times of that of the ideal wrapped phase. We phase shift the N-step phase-shifting fringe sequence π/N to generate the additional phase-shifting fringe sequence, and thus generate the opposite saturation-induced wrapped phase error. Finally, the saturation-induced wrapped phase error can be greatly reduced by fusing the wrapped phases of the two sets of phase-shifting fringe sequences. Compared with the traditional method and the adaptive projection fringe method, the phase error of the double N-step phase-shifting method is reduced by 69.92% and 65.2%, respectively.

Abstract:An novel on-line phase measuring profilometry (PMP) is proposed, which is more helpful and accurate than the dynamic Fourier-transform profilometry (FTP) in solving the problem where the object motion is along a straight line. It can be used for industrial on-line 3-D shape inspection. In PMP, the phase shifting technique is adopted and the phase calculation from N frames deformed patterns to wrapped phase is a point-to-point performance. The movement of the object results in the displacement of images in deformed pattern, so pixel matching is carried out to modify the positions of images to meet the PMP. Modulation represents the contour of the object, which is used to guide the pixel matching in this paper. Delamination and binarization of the modulation patterns further improve the pixel matching's accuracy and speed. Experiments verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:Fringe projection profilometry (FPP) is widely used in the 3-D noncontact measurement. In FPP, one of the most important steps is obtaining the absolute phase through fringe orders and wrapped phase. The existing methods usually acquire the fringe orders and wrapped phase independently. Therefore, more patterns are needed to project onto the object, which decreases the measuring speed a lot. We propose an inner shifting-phase method that codes the fringe orders and the wrapped phase into the same four patterns. With the unwrapping algorithm, we obtain the fringe orders and the wrapped phase simultaneously, which decreases the number of required patterns a lot. The proposed method calculates the absolute phase pixel-by-pixel independently without any preacquired information or geometric constraints. Experiment results show that the proposed method achieves almost the same accuracy with only a third of the patterns required by the conventional three-frequency four-step method. Experiment results also verify the validity of the proposed method in measuring both complex and separated objects.

Abstract:An on-line Phase Measuring Profilometry(PMP)based on least-square iteration was proposed to simplify the complexities of system installment and to avoid the influence of additional phase ?shifting caused by the non-parallelism between grating lines and object's displacement in the PMP based on synchronous detection.In measurement processing,the sinusoidal grating with arbitrary grid line direction was projected onto an object,and a CCD was used to capture the deformed fringe patterns.After pixel matching,fringe patterns were used to evaluate the phase distribution.The phase-shifting was determined as arbitrary values by both projection system and object's displacement.Finally,the least-square iteration was used to calculate the phases.The experiment result shows when the grating line directions on the reference plane are changed,the measurement resultsare stable,and the root-mean-square error is less than 0.169 9mm.It concludes that the proposed method relaxes the restriction of the spatial location of measurement equipment,increases the measurement flexibility and makes the PMP more applicable.
Full-field phase error detection and compensation method for digital phase-shifting fringe projection profilometry

Abstract:Digital fringe projection profilometry is one of the most widely utilized non-contact three-dimensional (3D) profile measurement techniques. The phase error caused by nonlinear gamma of digital projectors and cameras eventually reduces the 3D measurement accuracy. This kind of phase error still cannot be detected directly at present. A novel method is present in this paper not only to measure the phase error straightforwardly but also to extract the full-field error distributions. With the aid of the detected phase error distributions, the full-field look-up tables?(LUTs) can be obtained to correct the phase measurement result. A set of experiments to validate our methods has been performed. Experimental results well prove that the full-field phase error distributions have been detected successfully, and after utilizing our phase correction method the phase accuracy is obviously improved.

Abstract:Fringe projection profilometry (FPP) has been widely studied and used in three dimensional (3D) shape measurement because of its non-contact and high accuracy. By analyzing the captured fringe patterns, phase data can be demodulated with regard to depth. However, measurement efficiency decreases as number of the projected patterns increases. Therefore, it is a challenge to improve the projection rate, while ensuring measurement accuracy. To overcome this challenge, this paper proposes a complementary encoding method to correct the jump error of the unwrapping phase based on color phase-encoded fringe projection. Meanwhile, number of the projected patterns is reduced by using color modulation technique to generate composite fringes. The 3D reconstruction results of the proposed method are verified by qualitative experiments. Moreover, effectiveness of its error correction is discussed by quantitative experiments.

Abstract:Phase unwrapping is an important process in Fourier Transform Profilometry (FTP). Algorithm based on twice different precision measurements is one of the efficient solutions. But it requires at least two wrapped phase maps, which make impossible to apply in dynamic and real time 3D measurement. To overcome the obstacle, we present a novel method, in which FTP and colour fringe projections are combined to acquire two wrapped phase maps by a single snapshot of object. Thus algorithm based on twice different precision measurements can be accomplished with one exposure and dynamic 3D contouring can be implemented.

Abstract:Phase-shifting profilometry combining with the two-frequency temporal phase unwrapping is widely used for high-speed, real-time acquisition of three-dimensional shapes. However, when the object is not motionless during the acquisition process, some unreliable results may emerge, especially around the contours of the measured object. The main reason for this is that the same point in the projected pattern sequence can map to different points within the camera images resulting from depth changes over time. We present a novel approach for identifying those invalid pixels affected by such an error. By carefully examining the captured fringe pattern, comparing two modulation maps, utilizing the phase relationship between two neighboring pixels, and employing a Gaussian filter to detect the protruding points, the bad measurement pixels can be detected and filtered out effectively. The whole procedure is of low computational complexity because of the introduced lookup table-based fast data processing method. Abstract:Phase retrieval from fringe patterns is a primary procedure in fringe projection profilometry. Only accurate phase values result in three dimensions with certain accuracy. Phase shifting method plus temporal phase unwrapping approach provides not only the unwrapped absolute phase, but also the modulation map, background map, root mean square errors of least squares fitting, and phase relationship between two neighboring pixels, which can be used for the identification of phase invalidity. A practical phase retrieval frame work is presented to accurately calculate the absolute phase within reliable regions only, with which those unavailable phase points can be automatically identified with thresholds selection and criterion testing and then removed or interpolated according to applications. Experimental results show practical feasibility of the proposed framework.

Abstract:This paper reviews two techniques that have been recently published for 3D profilometry and proposes one shot profilometry using iterative two-step temporal phase-unwrapping by combining the composite fringe projection and the iterative two-step temporal phase unwrapping algorithm. In temporal phase unwrapping, many images with different frequency fringe pattern are needed to project which would take much time. In order to solve this problem, Ochoa proposed a phase unwrapping algorithm based on phase partitions using a composite fringe, which only needs projecting one composite fringe pattern with four kinds of frequency information to complete the process of 3D profilometry. However, we found that the fringe order determined through the construction of phase partitions tended to be imprecise. Recently, we proposed an iterative two-step temporal phase unwrapping algorithm, which can achieve high sensitivity and high precision shape measurement. But it needs multiple frames of fringe images which would take much time. In order to take into account both the speed and accuracy of 3D shape measurement, we get a new, and more accurate unwrapping method based on composite fringe pattern by combining these two techniques. This method not only retains the speed advantage of Ochoa's algorithm, but also greatly improves its measurement accuracy. Finally, the experimental evaluation is conducted to prove the validity of the proposed method, and the experimental results show that this method is feasible.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a high-speed 3D shape measurement technique based on the optimized composite fringe patterns and stereo-assisted structured light system. Stereo phase unwrapping, as a new-fashioned method for absolute phase retrieval based on the multi-view geometric constraints, can eliminate the phase ambiguities and obtain a continuous phase map without projecting any additional patterns. However, in order to ensure the stability of phase unwrapping, the period of fringe is generally around 20, which limits the accuracy of 3D measurement. To solve this problem, we develop an optimized method for designing the composite pattern, in which the speckle pattern is embedded into the conventional 4-step phase-shifting fringe patterns without compromising the fringe modulation, and thus the phase measurement accuracy. We also present a simple and effective evaluation criterion for the correlation quality of the designed speckle pattern in order to improve the matching accuracy significantly. When the embedded speckle pattern is demodulated, the periodic ambiguities in the wrapped phase can be eliminated by combining the adaptive window image correlation with geometry constraint. Finally, some mismatched regions are further corrected based on the proposed regional diffusion compensation technique (RDC). These proposed techniques constitute a complete computational framework that allows to effectively recover an accurate, unambiguous, and distortion-free 3D point cloud with only 4 projected patterns. Experimental results verify that our method can achieve high-speed, high-accuracy, robust 3D shape measurement with dense (64-period) fringe patterns at 5000 frames per second.

Abstract:Digital fringe projection profilometry based on phase-shifting technology is a reliable method for complex shape measurement, and the phase is one of the most important factors affecting measurement accuracy. The calculation of the absolute phase depends on the calculation of the wrapped phase and encoding technology. In this paper, a technique of obtaining the absolute phase of multi-frequency heterodyne fringe images using the Hilbert transform is presented. Since the wrapped phase can be calculated from only one fringe image of each frequency, the method does not need phase-shifting. The absolute phase can be obtained from the wrapped phase by applying the heterodyne method. The measurement time and computational complexity are dramatically reduced, the measurement efficiency is greatly improved, and this benefit from the number of images is greatly reduced. The experimental results show that the method presented in this paper performs well in the application, and the accuracy is no different from that of the phase-shifting method while the efficiency is greatly improved.
