Abstract:In June of 2010 access via robotic means was obtained to a tomb adjacent to the one studied in Feuerverger [Ann. Appl. Stat. 2 (2008) 3-54]. In this update, we lay out and attempt to interpret the remarkable findings from this second tomb and comment on the statistical and scientific significance of these new data and of their possible inferential connections to the data from the first tomb. Readers are then invited to formulate their own conclusions.

Abstract:What makes a problem suitable for statistical analysis? Are historical and religious questions addressable using statistical calculations? Such issues have long been debated in the statistical community and statisticians and others have used historical information and texts to analyze such questions as the economics of slavery, the authorship of the Federalist Papers and the question of the existence of God. But what about historical and religious attributions associated with information gathered from archeological finds? In 1980, a construction crew working in the Jerusalem neighborhood of East Talpiot stumbled upon a crypt. Archaeologists from the Israel Antiquities Authority came to the scene and found 10 limestone burial boxes, known as ossuaries, in the crypt. Six of these had inscriptions. The remains found in the ossuaries were reburied, as required by Jewish religious tradition, and the ossuaries were catalogued and stored in a warehouse. The inscriptions on the ossuaries were catalogued and published by Rahmani (1994) and by Kloner (1996) but there reports did not receive widespread public attention. Fast forward to March 2007, when a television ``docudrama'' aired on The Discovery Channel entitled ``The Lost Tomb of Jesus'' touched off a public and religious controversy--one only need think about the title to see why there might be a controversy! The program, and a simultaneously published book [Jacobovici and Pellegrino (2007)], described the ``rediscovery'' of the East Talpiot archeological find and they presented interpretations of the ossuary inscriptions from a number of perspectives. Among these was a statistical calculation attributed to the statistician Andrey Feuerverger: ``that the odds that all six names would appear together in one tomb are 1 in 600, calculated conservatively--or possibly even as much as one in one million.''

Abstract:The 3D orientation of clasts within a deposit are known to be informative on processes that formed that deposit. In archaeological sites, a portion of the clasts in the deposit are introduced by non-geological processes, and these are typically systematically recorded in archaeological excavations with total stations. By recording a second point on elongated clasts it is possible to quickly and precisely capture their orientation. The statistical and graphical techniques for analyzing these data are well published, and there is a growing set of actualistic and archaeological comparative data to help with the interpretation of the documented patterns. This paper advances this area of research in presenting methods to address some shortcomings in current methodologies. First, a method for calculating confidence intervals on orientation statistics is presented to help address the question of how many objects are needed to assess the formation of a deposit based on orientations. Second, a method for assessing the probability that two assemblages have different orientations is presented based on permutations testing. This method differs from existing ones in that it considers three-dimensional orientations rather than working separately with the two-dimensional bearing and plunge components. Third, a method is presented to examine spatial variability in orientations based on a moving windows approach. The raw data plus the R code to build this document and to implement these methods plus those already described by McPherron are included to help further their use in assessing archaeological site formation processes.

Abstract:Amalgamation of evidence in statistics is conducted in several ways. Within a study, multiple observations are combined by averaging, or as factors in a likelihood or prediction algorithm. In multilevel modeling or Bayesian analysis, population or prior information is combined with data using the weighted averaging derived from probability modeling. In a scientific research project, inferences from data analysis are interpreted in light of mechanistic models and substantive theories. Within a scholarly or applied research community, data and conclusions from separate laboratories are amalgamated through a series of steps, including peer review, meta-analysis, review articles, and replication studies. These issues have been discussed for many years in the philosophy of science and statistics, gaining attention in recent decades first with the renewed popularity of Bayesian inference and then with concerns about the replication crisis in science. In this article, we review the amalgamation of statistical evidence from different perspectives, connecting the foundations of statistics to the social processes of validation, criticism, and consensus building.

Abstract:Researchers increasingly rely on aggregations of radiocarbon dates from archaeological sites as proxies for past human populations. This approach has been critiqued on several grounds, including the assumptions that material is deposited, preserved, and sampled in proportion to past population size. However, various attempts to quantitatively assess the approach suggest there may be some validity in assuming date counts reflect relative population size. To add to this conversation, here we conduct a preliminary analysis coupling estimates of ethnographic population density with late Holocene radiocarbon dates across all counties in California. Results show that counts of late Holocene radiocarbon-dated archaeological sites increase significantly as a function of ethnographic population density. This trend is robust across varying sampling windows over the last 5000 BP. Though the majority of variation in dated-site counts remains unexplained by population density. Outliers reveal how departures from the central trend may be influenced by regional differences in research traditions, development-driven contract work, organic preservation, and landscape taphonomy. Overall, this exercise provides some support for the "dates-as-data" approach and offers insights into the conditions where the underlying assumptions may or may not hold.

Abstract:The paper presents a critical introduction to the complex statistical models used in ${}^{14}$C dating. The emphasis is on the estimation of the transit time between a sequence of archeological layers. Although a frequentist estimation of the parameters is relatively simple, confidence intervals constructions are not standard as the models are not regular. I argue that that the Bayesian paradigm is a natural approach to these models. It is simple, and gives immediate solutions to credible sets, with natural interpretation and simple construction. Indeed it is the standard tool of ${}^{14}$C analysis. However and necessarily, the Bayesian approach is based on technical assumptions that may dominate the scientific conclusion in a hard to predict way. I exemplify the discussion in two ways. Firstly, I simulate toy models. Secondly, I analyze a particular data set from the Iron Age period in Tel Rehov. These data are important to the debate on the absolute time of the Iron Age I/IIA transition in the Levant, and in particular to the feasibility of the Bible story about the United Monarchy of David and Solomon. Our conclusion is that the data in question cannot resolve this debate.

Abstract:This article presents a new method for estimating the amount of an artifact class in use at a given moment in the past from a random assemblage of archaeological finds. This method is based on the use of simulation, since an analytical solution is computationally impractical. Estimating the number of artifacts in use at any time $t$ is shown to follow a Poisson distribution, which allows for credible intervals to be established using the Jeffreys prior. This estimator works from minimal assumptions about the dating and duration of finds, as well as the intensity of collection, and is applied to coinage from four Roman-period sites excavated by the Roman Peasant Project (2009-2014). The result provides for an estimation of the abundance of material according to an interval of certainty.

Abstract:In a recent manuscript (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="0710.4917v2" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/0710.4917v2">arXiv:0710.4917v2</a>), Jones-Smith et al. attempt to use the well-established box-counting technique for fractal analysis to "demonstrate conclusively that fractal criteria are not useful for authentication". Here, in response to what we view to be an extremely simplistic misrepresentation of our earlier work by Jones-Smith et al., we reiterate our position regarding the potential of fractal analysis for artwork authentication. We also point out some of the flaws in the analysis presented in by Jones-Smith et al.

Abstract:Klaassen in (Klaassen 2015) proposed a method for the detection of data manipulation given the means and standard deviations for the cells of a oneway ANOVA design. This comment critically reviews this method. In addition, inspired by this analysis, an alternative approach to test sample correlations over several experiments is derived. The results are in close agreement with the initial analysis reported by an anonymous whistlelblower. Importantly, the statistic requires several similar experiments; a test for correlations between 3 sample means based on a single experiment must be considered as unreliable.

Abstract:In forensic handwriting analysis, it is crucial to understand the relative frequencies of findings relevant to the specific author, especially when using statistical methods. These are factored into the likelihoods used to determine the probabilities for the different authorship hypotheses. However, if ad hoc writings are included in the comparison materials, the representation of a comparison writer's habits can be distorted. An overrepresentation of certain creation time points can be avoided by treating ad hoc series of comparison writing samples as internally homogeneous agglomerates, incorporating only a single value per series into the average relative frequency of a given finding for a comparison writer. Additionally, the proposed approach produces finding counts largely independent of the length of the handwriting sample, which has a positive impact on the efficiency and cost‐effectiveness of the expert evaluation.

Abstract:This manuscript seeks to facilitate meta-analysis of cross-disciplinary ochre studies by advocating for a common vocabulary and clarifying the definition of “ochre” as used by archaeological scientists across cultural and geographic specialties. This work reviews the current state of ochre archaeometry, spanning the beginning of its major period of growth in the late 20th century through the present. Here, the focus is on the main areas of ochre archaeometry as represented in the published literature, with characteristic example studies and best practices for each. These areas include methodological approaches to characterization and provenience, instrumental data interpretation and its relation to experimental design and sampling, experimental archaeology, and chronometry. A key focus of this manuscript is highlighting emerging areas of research, such as biological processes and phenomena, and extant but understudied applications in the field including isotopic systems, genomic analysis, and experimental archaeology of ochre.
