Abstract:In June of 2010 access via robotic means was obtained to a tomb adjacent to the one studied in Feuerverger [Ann. Appl. Stat. 2 (2008) 3-54]. In this update, we lay out and attempt to interpret the remarkable findings from this second tomb and comment on the statistical and scientific significance of these new data and of their possible inferential connections to the data from the first tomb. Readers are then invited to formulate their own conclusions.

Abstract:What makes a problem suitable for statistical analysis? Are historical and religious questions addressable using statistical calculations? Such issues have long been debated in the statistical community and statisticians and others have used historical information and texts to analyze such questions as the economics of slavery, the authorship of the Federalist Papers and the question of the existence of God. But what about historical and religious attributions associated with information gathered from archeological finds? In 1980, a construction crew working in the Jerusalem neighborhood of East Talpiot stumbled upon a crypt. Archaeologists from the Israel Antiquities Authority came to the scene and found 10 limestone burial boxes, known as ossuaries, in the crypt. Six of these had inscriptions. The remains found in the ossuaries were reburied, as required by Jewish religious tradition, and the ossuaries were catalogued and stored in a warehouse. The inscriptions on the ossuaries were catalogued and published by Rahmani (1994) and by Kloner (1996) but there reports did not receive widespread public attention. Fast forward to March 2007, when a television ``docudrama'' aired on The Discovery Channel entitled ``The Lost Tomb of Jesus'' touched off a public and religious controversy--one only need think about the title to see why there might be a controversy! The program, and a simultaneously published book [Jacobovici and Pellegrino (2007)], described the ``rediscovery'' of the East Talpiot archeological find and they presented interpretations of the ossuary inscriptions from a number of perspectives. Among these was a statistical calculation attributed to the statistician Andrey Feuerverger: ``that the odds that all six names would appear together in one tomb are 1 in 600, calculated conservatively--or possibly even as much as one in one million.''

Abstract:This article presents a new method for estimating the amount of an artifact class in use at a given moment in the past from a random assemblage of archaeological finds. This method is based on the use of simulation, since an analytical solution is computationally impractical. Estimating the number of artifacts in use at any time $t$ is shown to follow a Poisson distribution, which allows for credible intervals to be established using the Jeffreys prior. This estimator works from minimal assumptions about the dating and duration of finds, as well as the intensity of collection, and is applied to coinage from four Roman-period sites excavated by the Roman Peasant Project (2009-2014). The result provides for an estimation of the abundance of material according to an interval of certainty.

Abstract:This manuscript seeks to facilitate meta-analysis of cross-disciplinary ochre studies by advocating for a common vocabulary and clarifying the definition of “ochre” as used by archaeological scientists across cultural and geographic specialties. This work reviews the current state of ochre archaeometry, spanning the beginning of its major period of growth in the late 20th century through the present. Here, the focus is on the main areas of ochre archaeometry as represented in the published literature, with characteristic example studies and best practices for each. These areas include methodological approaches to characterization and provenience, instrumental data interpretation and its relation to experimental design and sampling, experimental archaeology, and chronometry. A key focus of this manuscript is highlighting emerging areas of research, such as biological processes and phenomena, and extant but understudied applications in the field including isotopic systems, genomic analysis, and experimental archaeology of ochre.

Abstract:Comparing assemblages is a key to lithic analysis.From the history perspective,the interpretation of lithic assemblage may be outlined two aspects:1)a lithic assemblage is sets of objects and features generally from a site or a layer,we might get the meaning of technology,culture,or even function from the analysis of presence or absence of its material or composition;2)lithic assemblage was formed in a complex process,therefore,besides concerning similarity and difference between the assemblages,factors like the boundary of the assemblage and the life cycle of artifacts should also be taken into consideration.Nowadays,under the circumstance of interdiscipline,with the objective advantages in multivariate comparative study,quantitative analysis broadens the horizon of comparing assemblages.The method includes graphical method and statistics.However,such kind of practice is relatively insufficient in China.The advantages of graphical method are those could present complex data multidimensionally and simultaneously and also contribute to increase the readability.It chiefly includes Cumulative Graph/Curves,Clustered Histogram/Accumulative Histogram,Snowflake Diagram and Radar Graph.The characteristic of the latter two is that they could reduce the variates with classification,and obtain more information.Ncvertheless,it is bctter to combine the methods like use-wear analysis and residue analysis in classification to improve the accuracy of the information.In statistics,assemblage diversity has been paid close attention by researchers all the time,including the aspects of richness,evenness and heterogeneity.The available methods could be regression method,simulation method,Shannon-Weaver information statistic H,Pielou statistic J and so on.Considering the sample effect,researchers now prefer nonparametric estimators like Jackknife Technique,Bootstrap,Rarefaction (Interpolation) and Extrapolation.With the correlation and confidential intervals given by these methods,researchers may estimate the "true" size of assemblage when the sample size is limited but the variants are in dependency.The general procedure of quantitative analysis is confirming the research target,and then extracting variate,examining the correlation,after that choosing the method,finally returning to qualitative analysis.Although quantitative analysis provides an opportunity for comparing assemblages,it still lacks unification and standards.Therefore,when these methods are put to use,it should be placed into the archaeology frame with cautious consideration.In a word,in spite of the objectivity of artifacts assemblage comparison that quantitative analysis could add,this method should still be regarded as a supplementary method,to be more precisely,a supplement to qualitative analysis.

Abstract:Landscape research in archaeology has greatly benefited from the increasing application of computational methods over the last decades. Spatial statistical methods such as point pattern analysis have been particularly revolutionary. Archaeologists have used point pattern analysis to explore spatial arrangements and relations between 'points' (e.g., locations of artefacts or archaeological sites). However, the results obtained from these techniques can be greatly affected by the uncertainty coming from the fragmentary nature of archaeological data, their irregular distribution in the landscape, and the working methods used to study them. Furthermore, the quantification of uncertainty in spatial data coming from non-systematic surveys has never been fully addressed. To overcome this challenge, archaeologists have increasingly relied on applying advanced methods from statistics, data science, and geography. While the application of advanced methods from formal sciences will provide robustness to models based on uncertain datasets, as with uncertainty, robustness must be assessed in relation to the case study, the regional context, and the methods used. These issues are of great importance when the models from advanced methods are directly used to create narratives about past landscapes. In this paper, we gather previous research on uncertainty quantification in archaeology and formalize its best practices into a framework to assess robustness and uncertainty in spatial statistical models, particularly focusing on one commonly used in the discipline, i.e., the Pair Correlation Function. This framework allows us to understand better how incomplete data affect a model, quantify the model uncertainties, and assess the robustness of the results achieved with spatial point processes.

Abstract:Abstract In this article, we study the contributions of the microhistorical approach to landscape and settlement archaeology in the French context. First, we outline the reception of microhistorical concepts in France. The micro-analytical scale allows a renewal of the questionings, of the approaches, and therefore of the vision of the studied societies. In the particular case of archaeological research on landscape and settlement, we argue that the microhistorical approach proposes the spatial micro-scale as a framework, but it must be surpassed by a comparative approach capable of discerning common trends and local particularities. This approach thus makes it possible to question major macro-historical questions that still lack clear and consensual answers, such as the modalities of transition between major historical phases, the nucleation of settlement into the medieval village, the extension of the finages and the possibility of agricultural growth in the early Middle Ages, or the modalities of management and exploitation of natural resources.

Abstract:The paper presents a critical introduction to the complex statistical models used in ${}^{14}$C dating. The emphasis is on the estimation of the transit time between a sequence of archeological layers. Although a frequentist estimation of the parameters is relatively simple, confidence intervals constructions are not standard as the models are not regular. I argue that that the Bayesian paradigm is a natural approach to these models. It is simple, and gives immediate solutions to credible sets, with natural interpretation and simple construction. Indeed it is the standard tool of ${}^{14}$C analysis. However and necessarily, the Bayesian approach is based on technical assumptions that may dominate the scientific conclusion in a hard to predict way. I exemplify the discussion in two ways. Firstly, I simulate toy models. Secondly, I analyze a particular data set from the Iron Age period in Tel Rehov. These data are important to the debate on the absolute time of the Iron Age I/IIA transition in the Levant, and in particular to the feasibility of the Bible story about the United Monarchy of David and Solomon. Our conclusion is that the data in question cannot resolve this debate.

Abstract:Over the past two decades, Digital Humanities has transformed the landscape of humanities and social sciences, enabling advanced computational analysis and interpretation of extensive datasets. Notably, recent initiatives in Southeast Asia, particularly in Singapore, focus on categorising and archiving historical data such as artwork, literature and, most notably archaeological artefacts. This study illustrates the profound potential of Digital Humanities through the application of statistical methods on two distinct artefact datasets. Specifically, we present the results of an automated die study on mid-1st millennium AD "Rising Sun" coinage from mainland Southeast Asia, while subsequently utilising unsupervised statistical methods on 2D images of 13th-14th century earthenware ceramics excavated from the precolonial St. Andrew's Cathedral site in central Singapore. This research offers a comparative assessment showcasing the transformative impact of statistics-based approaches on the interpretation and analysis of diverse archaeological materials and within Digital Humanities overall.
Organically Grown Archaeological Databases and their 'Messiness': Hobby Metal Detecting in Norway

Abstract:Hobby metal detecting in Norway has grown since 2014. In the Norwegian recording system, all finds are catalogued by professionals at five regional museums. The examination of the dataset thus created allows the authors to look at regional and national patterns and discuss the inherently messy and 'human' nature of a seemingly quantitative material. Their study suggests that both archaeologists and detectorists influence the quality of the evidence and how representative the data are. They argue that metal detecting patterns are primarily the result of modern activities, such as management practices and the endeavours of a few very prolific detectorists in certain areas. Understanding these biases and systematically recording the activities of the actors involved is crucial if we are to make full use of the metal-detected material.

Abstract:Analytical chemistry on archaeological material is an essential part of modern archaeological investigations and from year to year, instrumental improvement has made it possible to generate data at a high spatial and temporal frequency. In particular, Raman spectral imaging can be successfully applied in archaeological research by its simplicity of implementation to study past human societies through the analysis of their material remains. This technique makes it possible to simultaneously obtain spatial and spectral information by preserving sample integrity. However, because of the inherent complexity of the samples in Archaeology (e.g. seniority, fragility, lack or full absence of any information about its composition), chemical interpretation can be difficult at first glance. Indeed, specific problems of spectral selectivity related to unexpected chemical compounds could appear due to their state of conservation. Furthermore, detecting minor compounds becomes challenging as major components impose their contributions in the acquired spectra. Therefore, a relevant chemometric approach has been introduced in this context to characterize distinct spectral sources in a Raman imaging dataset of an archaeological specimen – a mosaic fragment. The fragment was unearthed during the Ruscino archaeological dig on the outskirts of Perpignan, France. It dates back to the oppidum period. The aim is to extract selective spectral information from pixel clustering analysis in order to enhance the initial optimisation step within the Multivariate Curve Resolution and Alternating Least-Squares (MCR-ALS) algorithm, a well-known signal unmixing technique. The underlying principle of the MCR-ALS is that the acquired spectra can be expressed as linear combinations of pure spectra of all individual components present in the chemical system under study. Sometimes it can be difficult to obtain the desired results through the algorithm, particularly if initial estimates of spectral or concentration profiles are inaccurate due to complex signals, noise or lack of selectivity, resulting in rank deficiency (i.e. a poor estimation of the total number of pure signals). For this reason, an innovative threshold-based clustering algorithm, combined with multiple Orthogonal Projection Approaches (OPA), has been developed to improve matrix rank investigation and thus the initialisation step of the MCR-ALS approach before optimisation. The effective analysis of Raman imaging data for an archaeological mosaic played a crucial role in uncovering significant chemical information about a particular biogenic material. This insight sheds light on the origins of mortar manufacture during the oppidum period.

Abstract:One of the main objectives of Palaeolithic art researchers is to study and systematise the form of artistic representations. Some methodologies include the analysis of qualitative variables, linear measurements or the use of geometric morphometry with landmarks. However, these techniques depend to a large extent on the subjectivity of the researcher, which often leads to biased results. To overcome this issue, we present an application of geometric morphometry using Elliptic Fourier Analysis (EFA), together with multivariate statistics and hypothesis testing, for the first time to the study of form in prehistoric art. In order to explain its use, the "duck-bill" convention of pre-Magdalenian horses, often used as a chronological and geographical marker, has been used as a case study. This formalism is described disparately in the literature, so the main objective is to use EFA to determine whether it is possible to characterise this type of convention according to the definitions given by certain authors. The results indicate a possible classification of the heads of these animals. Through this taxonomic proposal, it has been possible to verify the great diversity of forms in which the authors classify the duck-bill horses and, therefore, to demonstrate that this peculiar form can be considered neither a conventionalism nor a chronological/regional marker. In conclusion, the methodology based on EFA combined with multivariate statistics for the objective study of form in prehistoric art is effective and opens a new avenue of analysis in the art of prehistoric societies.
