Abstract:In June of 2010 access via robotic means was obtained to a tomb adjacent to the one studied in Feuerverger [Ann. Appl. Stat. 2 (2008) 3-54]. In this update, we lay out and attempt to interpret the remarkable findings from this second tomb and comment on the statistical and scientific significance of these new data and of their possible inferential connections to the data from the first tomb. Readers are then invited to formulate their own conclusions.

Abstract:The paper presents a critical introduction to the complex statistical models used in ${}^{14}$C dating. The emphasis is on the estimation of the transit time between a sequence of archeological layers. Although a frequentist estimation of the parameters is relatively simple, confidence intervals constructions are not standard as the models are not regular. I argue that that the Bayesian paradigm is a natural approach to these models. It is simple, and gives immediate solutions to credible sets, with natural interpretation and simple construction. Indeed it is the standard tool of ${}^{14}$C analysis. However and necessarily, the Bayesian approach is based on technical assumptions that may dominate the scientific conclusion in a hard to predict way. I exemplify the discussion in two ways. Firstly, I simulate toy models. Secondly, I analyze a particular data set from the Iron Age period in Tel Rehov. These data are important to the debate on the absolute time of the Iron Age I/IIA transition in the Levant, and in particular to the feasibility of the Bible story about the United Monarchy of David and Solomon. Our conclusion is that the data in question cannot resolve this debate.

Abstract:What makes a problem suitable for statistical analysis? Are historical and religious questions addressable using statistical calculations? Such issues have long been debated in the statistical community and statisticians and others have used historical information and texts to analyze such questions as the economics of slavery, the authorship of the Federalist Papers and the question of the existence of God. But what about historical and religious attributions associated with information gathered from archeological finds? In 1980, a construction crew working in the Jerusalem neighborhood of East Talpiot stumbled upon a crypt. Archaeologists from the Israel Antiquities Authority came to the scene and found 10 limestone burial boxes, known as ossuaries, in the crypt. Six of these had inscriptions. The remains found in the ossuaries were reburied, as required by Jewish religious tradition, and the ossuaries were catalogued and stored in a warehouse. The inscriptions on the ossuaries were catalogued and published by Rahmani (1994) and by Kloner (1996) but there reports did not receive widespread public attention. Fast forward to March 2007, when a television ``docudrama'' aired on The Discovery Channel entitled ``The Lost Tomb of Jesus'' touched off a public and religious controversy--one only need think about the title to see why there might be a controversy! The program, and a simultaneously published book [Jacobovici and Pellegrino (2007)], described the ``rediscovery'' of the East Talpiot archeological find and they presented interpretations of the ossuary inscriptions from a number of perspectives. Among these was a statistical calculation attributed to the statistician Andrey Feuerverger: ``that the odds that all six names would appear together in one tomb are 1 in 600, calculated conservatively--or possibly even as much as one in one million.''

Abstract:Due to freely available, tailored software, Bayesian statistics is now the dominant paradigm for archaeological chronology construction in the UK and much of Europe and is increasing in popularity in the Americas. Such software provides users with powerful tools for Bayesian inference for chronological models with little need to undertake formal study of statistical modelling or computer programming. This runs the risk that it is reduced to the status of a black box, which is not sensible given the power and complexity of the modelling tools it implements. In this paper we seek to offer intuitive insight to ensure that readers from the archaeological research community who use Bayesian chronological modelling software will be better able to make well educated choices about the tools and techniques they adopt. Our hope is that they will then be both better informed about their own research designs and better prepared to offer constructively critical assessments of the modelling undertaken by others.

Abstract:Bayesian methods have garnered huge interest in cognitive science as an approach to models of cognition and perception. On the other hand, Bayesian methods for data analysis have not yet made much headway in cognitive science against the institutionalized inertia of 20th century null hypothesis significance testing (NHST). Ironically, specific Bayesian models of cognition and perception may not long endure the ravages of empirical verification, but generic Bayesian methods for data analysis will eventually dominate. It is time that Bayesian data analysis became the norm for empirical methods in cognitive science. This article reviews a fatal flaw of NHST and introduces the reader to some benefits of Bayesian data analysis. The article presents illustrative examples of multiple comparisons in Bayesian analysis of variance and Bayesian approaches to statistical power. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Abstract:The 3D orientation of clasts within a deposit are known to be informative on processes that formed that deposit. In archaeological sites, a portion of the clasts in the deposit are introduced by non-geological processes, and these are typically systematically recorded in archaeological excavations with total stations. By recording a second point on elongated clasts it is possible to quickly and precisely capture their orientation. The statistical and graphical techniques for analyzing these data are well published, and there is a growing set of actualistic and archaeological comparative data to help with the interpretation of the documented patterns. This paper advances this area of research in presenting methods to address some shortcomings in current methodologies. First, a method for calculating confidence intervals on orientation statistics is presented to help address the question of how many objects are needed to assess the formation of a deposit based on orientations. Second, a method for assessing the probability that two assemblages have different orientations is presented based on permutations testing. This method differs from existing ones in that it considers three-dimensional orientations rather than working separately with the two-dimensional bearing and plunge components. Third, a method is presented to examine spatial variability in orientations based on a moving windows approach. The raw data plus the R code to build this document and to implement these methods plus those already described by McPherron are included to help further their use in assessing archaeological site formation processes.
Subtleties in Bayesian decision-theoretic analysis for forensic findings: Notes on recent discussion of the role of validation study data in rational decision making

Abstract:This technical note extends a recent discussion in this journal of the role of validation study data in rational decision making. One argument that has been made in this context, using elements of Bayesian decision theory, is that further aggregation of validation study data into error rates involves a loss of information that compromises rational inference and decision making and should therefore be discouraged. This technical note seeks to explain that this argument can be developed at different levels of detail, depending on the definition of the propositions of interest, the forensic findings to be evaluated (and hence the form of the likelihood ratio), and the characterization of the relative desirability of decision consequences. The analyses proposed here reveal the cascade of abstractions and assumptions into which discussions about the use of validation study results in forensic science have fallen. This reinforces the conclusion that further aggregation of validation study data into error rates is problematic. It also suggests that even if a definition of error rate(s) could be agreed upon and defensively quantified in a given application, we should rethink and possibly adjust our expectations about what exactly error rates can practically contribute to rational modes of reasoning and decision making in legal contexts.

Abstract:We argue here about the relevance and the ultimate unity of the Bayesian approach in a neutral and agnostic manner. Our main theme is that Bayesian data analysis is an effective tool for handling complex models, as proven by the increasing proportion of Bayesian studies in the applied sciences. We disregard in this essay the philosophical debates on the deeper meaning of probability and on the random nature of parameters as things of the past that do a disservice to the approach and are incomprehensible to most bystanders.

Abstract:I congratulate all the authors for their insightful papers with wide-ranging contributions. The articles demonstrate the power and elegance of the Bayesian inference paradigm. In particular, it allows to incorporate prior knowledge as well as hierarchical model building in a convincing way. Regarding the latter, the contribution by Raftery, Alkema and German is a very fascinating piece, as it addresses a set of problems of great public interest and presents predictions for the world populations and other interesting quantities with uncertainty regions. Their approach is based on a hierarchical model, taking various characteristics into account (e.g., fertility projections). It would have been very difficult to come up with a "better" solution which would be as clear in terms of interpretation (in contrast to a "black-box machine") and which would provide (model-based) uncertainties for the predictions into the future.
