Abstract:This paper aims to present an efficient method of back-analysis of the settlement induced by a TBM in an urban area with highly stratified layers and in the vicinity of sensitive structures, where, deformation should be very limited, to identify the appropriate soil parameters. This method is applied to a case study on Metro Line 12 in the Paris area, for which specific settlement measurements are available. The back analysis (BA) for both the peak and shape of the transverse settlement was performed on a series of 2D (FE) models using a non-linear elastoplastic soil behavior. The latter was initially calibrated with a 3D FE model to accurately represent the 3D effect of the excavation, as well as the TBM's face pressure and grouting pressure within the liner-ground gap by fitting the 2D results with the 3D results. The chosen case study involves a tunnel head and cover with multiple soil layers, necessitating optimization of the BA process. To achieve this, a sensitivity analysis was carried out to isolate essential parameters and reduce computation time. Given the low values of the settlement measurements, the focus of the BA was on stiffness parameters, since plastic deformation was absent in the numerical model. Conducted on the soil stiffnesses, the BA highlights the advantages of considering only the most influential parameters. A total of 2200 min of computation time was saved while an almost identical FE transverse surface settlement curve was generated.
