Abstract:The aim of the Swedish-Japanese EISCAT campaign in February 1999 was to measure the ionospheric parameters inside and outside the auroral arcs. The ion line radar experiment was optimised to probe the E-region and lower F-region with as high a speed as possible. Two extra channels were used for the plasma line measurements covering the same altitudes, giving a total of 3 upshifted and 3 downshifted frequency bands of 25 kHz each. For most of the time the shifted channels were tuned to 3 (both), 4 (up), 5.5 (down) and 6.5 (both) MHz. Weak signals are seen whenever the radar is probing the diffuse aurora, corresponding to the relatively low plasma frequencies. At times when auroral arcs pass the radar beam, significant increases in return power are observed. Many cases with simultaneously up and down shifted plasma lines are recorded. In spite of the rather active environment, the highly optimised measurements enable investigation of the properties of the plasma lines. A modified theoretical incoherent scatter spectrum is used to explain the measurements. The general trend is an upgoing field-aligned current in the diffuse aurora, confirmed with a full fit of the combined ion and plasma line spectra. There are also cases with strong suprathermal currents indicated by large differences in signal strength between up- and downshifted plasma lines.

Abstract:We present an analysis of the ionospheric electric field dynamics at high latitudes during periods of quiet and disturbed geomagnetic activity by exploiting recent advancements in dynamical systems and extreme value theory. Specifically, we employed two key indicators: the instantaneous dimension d, which evaluates the degrees of freedom within the system, and the extremal index θ, which quantifies the system's persistence in a given state. Electric field measurements were obtained from the CSES-01 satellite at mid- and high latitudes in the Southern Hemisphere. Our analysis revealed that the instantaneous dimension increases upon crossing specific ionospheric regions corresponding to the auroral oval boundaries. Outside these regions, the instantaneous dimension fluctuates around the state-space dimension, suggesting an ergodic nature of the system. As geomagnetic activity intensifies, differences in the properties of various ionospheric regions persist, albeit with an increased system instability characterized by higher θ values, thus indicating the externally driven nature of the electric field response to geomagnetic activity. This study provides new insights into the spatial and temporal variability of electric field fluctuations in the ionosphere, highlighting the complex interplay between geomagnetic conditions and ionospheric dynamics.

Abstract:During geomagnetic storms, the capabilities of current climate models in predicting ionospheric behavior are notably limited. A data assimilation tool, Estimating Model Parameters Reverse Engineering (EMPIRE), implements a Kalman filter to ingest electric density rate correcting the background electric potential and neutral wind. For the baseline setup, or case (1), EMPIRE ingests electron density global map output from the Ionospheric Data Assimilation 4‐Dimensional (IDA4D) algorithm. In this work, a new augmentation method is evaluated in which ion drift measurements are also assimilated into EMPIRE. The ion drift measurements used in the new augmentation method are obtained from Super Dual Auroral Radar Network (SuperDARN) sites in the mid‐to‐high latitude region of the northern hemisphere. Cases (2) and (3) are set up for evaluating the impacts from ingesting different types of observations: SuperDARN fit and grid data, respectively. Six independent data sources are used as validation data sets to compare outcomes with or without ingesting ion drifts. One is the vector ion velocities derived from the Millstone Hill Incoherent Scatter Radar (MHISR) and a second is the vertical drift from Arecibo site. The other four are SuperDARN ion velocity grid data from Saskatoon, Kapuskasing, Christmas Valley West, and Hokkaido East. Results show improvements in performance at mid‐latitudes by augmenting electron density rates with 3D spatially distributed line‐of‐sight ion drift measurements, with negligible improvements to low and high latitude estimations. The lack of improvement at high‐latitudes is attributed to the increase in EMPIRE ion drift error poleward of 60° magnetic.

Investigation of Ionospheric Small‐Scale Plasma Structures Associated With Particle Precipitation

Abstract:We investigate the role of auroral particle precipitation in small‐scale (below hundreds of meters) plasma structuring in the auroral ionosphere over the Arctic. In this scope, we analyze together data recorded by an Ionospheric Scintillation Monitor Receiver (ISMR) of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signals and by an All‐Sky Imager located in Longyearbyen, Svalbard (Norway). We leverage on the raw GNSS samples provided at 50 Hz by the ISMR to evaluate amplitude and phase scintillation indices at 1 s time resolution and the Ionosphere‐Free Linear Combination at 20 ms time resolution. The simultaneous use of the 1 s GNSS‐based scintillation indices allows identifying the scale size of the irregularities involved in plasma structuring in the range of small (up to few hundreds of meters) and medium‐scale size ranges (up to few kilometers) for GNSS frequencies and observational geometry. Additionally, they allow identifying the diffractive and refractive nature of fluctuations on the recorded GNSS signals. Six strong auroral events and their effects on plasma structuring are studied. Plasma structuring down to scales of hundreds of meters is seen when strong gradients in auroral emissions at 557.7 nm cross the line of sight between the GNSS satellite and receiver. Local magnetic field measurements confirm small‐scale structuring processes coinciding with intensification of ionospheric currents. Since 557.7 nm emissions primarily originate from the ionospheric E‐region, plasma instabilities from particle precipitation at E‐region altitudes are considered to be responsible for the signatures of small‐scale plasma structuring highlighted in the GNSS scintillation data.

On the contribution of thermal excitation to the total 630.0 nm emissions in the northern cusp ionosphere

Abstract:Direct impact excitation by precipitating electrons is believed to be the main source of 630.0 nm emissions in the cusp ionosphere. However, this paper investigates a different source, 630.0 emissions caused by thermally excited atomic oxygen O$(^{1}$D) when high electron temperature prevail in the cusp. On 22 January 2012 and 14 January 2013, the European Incoherent Scatter Scientific Association (EISCAT) radar on Svalbard measured electron temperature enhancements exceeding 3000 K near magnetic noon in the cusp ionosphere over Svalbard. The electron temperature enhancements corresponded to electron density enhancements exceeding $10^{11}$m$^{-3}$ accompanied by intense 630.0 nm emissions in a field of view common to both the EISCAT Svalbard radar and a meridian scanning photometer. This offered an excellent opportunity to investigate the role of thermally excited O$(^{1}$D) 630.0 nm emissions in the cusp ionosphere. The thermal component was derived from the EISCAT Radar measurements and compared with optical data. For both events the calculated thermal component had a correlation coefficient greater than 0.8 to the total observed 630.0 nm intensity which contains both thermal and particle impact components. Despite fairly constant solar wind, the calculated thermal component intensity fluctuated possibly due to dayside transients in the aurora.
