Abstract:Solar flares significantly impact the conditions of the Earth’s ionosphere. In particular, the sudden increase in X-ray flux during a flare penetrates down to the lowest-lying D-region and dominates ionization at these altitudes (≈60\documentclass[12pt]{minimal}\usepackage{amsmath}\usepackage{wasysym}\usepackage{amsfonts}\usepackage{amssymb}\usepackage{amsbsy}\usepackage{mathrsfs}\usepackage{upgreek}\setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt}\begin{document}$\approx60$\end{document} – 100 km). Measurements of very low frequency (VLF: 3 – 30 kHz) radio waves that reflect at D-region altitudes provide a unique remote-sensing probe to investigate the D-region response to solar-flare emissions. Here, using a combination of VLF amplitude measurements at 24 kHz together with X-ray observations from the Geostationary Operational Environment Satellite (GOES) X-ray sensor, we present a large-scale statistical study of 334 solar-flare events and their impacts on the D-region over the past solar cycle. Focusing on both GOES broadband X-ray channels, we investigate how the flare peak fluxes and position on the solar disk dictate an ionospheric response and extend this to investigate the characteristic time delay between incident X-ray flux and the D-region response. We show that the VLF amplitude linearly correlates with both the 1 – 8 Å and 0.5 – 4 Å channels, with correlation coefficients of 0.80 and 0.79, respectively. For the two X-class flares in our sample, however, there appears to be a turnover in the linear relationship, similar to previous works. Unlike higher altitude ionospheric regions for which the location of the flare on the solar disk affects the ionospheric response, we find that the D-region response to solar flares does not depend on the flare location. By comparing the time delays between the peak X-ray fluxes in both GOES channels and VLF amplitudes, we find that there is an important difference between the D-region response and the X-ray spectral band. We also demonstrate for several flare events that show a negative time delay, the peak VLF amplitude matches with the impulsive 25 – 50 keV hard X-ray fluxes measured by the Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI). These results highlight the importance of performing full spectral analysis when studying the ionospheric responses to solar flares.

Abstract:A novel method was developed based on the amplitude data of the EM waves measured by Digisondes to calculate and investigate the relative ionospheric absorption changes. The effect of 13 solar flares (>C8) that occurred from 4 to 10 September 2017 were studied at three European Digisonde stations (Juliusruh (54.63°N, 13.37°E), Průhonice (49.98°N, 14.55°E) and San Vito (40.6°N, 17.8°E)). The present study compares the results of the amplitude method with the absorption changes measured by the Finnish Riometer Network and determined by the NOAA D-RAP model during the same events. The X-class flares caused 1.5–2.5 dB of attenuation at 30–32.5 MHz based on the riometer data, while the absorption changes were between 10 and 15 dB in the 2.5–4.5 MHz frequency range according to the amplitude data. The impact caused by energetic particles after the solar flares are clearly seen in the riometer data, while among the Digisonde stations it can be observed only at Juliusruh in some certain cases. Comparing the results of the amplitude method with the D-RAP model it seems evident that the observed absorption values almost always exceed the values given by the model both at 2.5 MHz and at 4 MHz during the investigated period. According to the comparison between the riometer data with the D-RAP, generally, the model underestimates the absorption values obtained from the riometers during solar flares except at the highest latitude stations, while D-RAP overestimates the impact during the particle events.

Abstract:Solar extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) irradiance is the dominant energy source for ionizing and heating the Earth's upper atmosphere. It is common to assume that the spectra of different EUV lines have the same trend to fill the solar EUV irradiance gap for modeling purposes due to inadequate EUV irradiance measurements. However, the spectra across the EUV bands may not vary in the same trend. The flare radiation energy release in the EUV (10–120 nm) is about twice as much as X-rays (0.1–10 nm) during flare interval ∼03–06 UT on 2012 October 23. By assimilating the observed nonuniform varying, time-dependent, and high-resolution solar spectrum from the Solar Dynamics Observatory mission into the modeling framework, we provide the first direct evidence of nonuniform varying solar EUV fluxes during the solar flare EUV late phase (ELP) having appreciable effects on the dayside ionosphere. The total EUV radiation energy release (5.838 × 10 28 erg) during the flare ELP is larger than that (5.698 × 10 28 erg) during the flare main phase. The ELP of an X1.8-class solar flare on 2012 October 23 can increase the dayside ionospheric density at the subsolar point by ∼5 TECU and the ionospheric density enhancements extend from the bottom to the peak of the F2 region at low latitudes with relative changes ranging from ∼20% to ∼100%. Our results highlight the importance of incorporating a realistic, high spectral and temporal resolution solar irradiance spectrum into numerical models to capture the observed time-varying ionospheric response to solar flares.

Abstract:Previous investigations of ionospheric electrodynamical responses to solar flares primarily focused on the main phases (MPs) of solar flares. Typical solar irradiance models for driving global ionosphere models do not include the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) late phase (ELP) of flares, which was recently observed with new high-quality solar EUV spectra. Thus, it is still unclear how ionospheric electrodynamics respond to the flare ELP. Here, we analyzed the ionospheric electrodynamical response to the MP and ELP of the X9.3 flare on 2017 September 6, using observations from ground magnetometers, along with simulation results from an ionosphere–thermosphere coupled model. Observations indicated an intensification of the dayside eastward equatorial electrojet (EEJ) by approximately 12 nT at the ELP peak as compared to the quiet day reference. Additionally, the dayside eastward electric field increased due to the ELP, which is different from the reduction of dayside electric fields during MP. The upward E × B plasma drifts decreased by 2.5 m s –1 during MP but increased by 0.75 m s –1 during the ELP. Altitude-dependent responses of ionospheric conductivities to the ELP modulated the relative contribution of the E- and F-region wind dynamo to zonal electric fields, resulting in an overall increase in the daytime eastward electric fields. Furthermore, combined effects of electric fields and conductivities enhancements contributed to EEJ intensification during the ELP. This study enhances our understanding of how solar flares with ELP change global ionospheric electric fields and currents.

Abstract:Solar flares can severely disturb the Earth's ionosphere, leading to changes of atmospheric chemistry and degradation of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signals. The key to better assess these effects is to more accurately quantify the electron density enhancements induced by solar flares, which is still uncertain. Thanks to the good coverage and quiet electromagnetic environment provided by the Great Wall Station (GWS, 62.22°S, 58.96°W) in Antarctica, our Very‐Low‐Frequency (VLF) receiver has recorded clean VLF signatures produced by three X‐class solar flares from March to May in 2022. These measurements motivate us to revisit the uncertain question related to the ionospheric effects induced by solar flares. Different from previous studies, we model solar flare events from satellite measurements of X‐ray fluxes to ground‐based measurements of VLF transmitter signals by combining a flare irradiance model, an X‐ray propagation model, a D‐region chemistry model, and a VLF propagation model. For eight transmitting frequencies and propagation paths, modeling results can satisfactorily explain our VLF measurements at GWS during the three X‐class flares, especially so for the X1.3 event occurring on 30 March 2022. Moreover, the electron density results that reconcile space‐ and ground‐based measurements suggest that the VLF reflection height can be lowered to ∼66 km by an X1.1 flare, in line with previous studies. The present set of numerical models can be thus utilized in future studies to improve the nowcasting capability of VLF sensing technique for monitoring solar flares, as well as the accuracy of GNSS navigation/positioning during solar flares.

A study of VLF signals variations associated with the changes of ionization level in the D-region in consequence of solar conditions

Abstract:In this paper we confine our attention to the analysis of amplitude and phase data acquired by monitoring VLF/LF radio signals emitted by four European transmitters during a seven-year period (2008-2014). All the data were recorded at a Belgrade site (44.85$^{0}$ N, 20.38$^{0}$ E) by the Stanford University ELF/VLF receiver AWESOME. Propagation of VLF/LF radio signal takes place in the Earth-ionosphere waveguide and strongly depends on ionization level of the D-region, which means that it is mainly controlled by solar conditions. Some results of amplitude and phase variations on GQD/22.10 kHz, DHO/23.40 kHz, ICV/20.27 kHz and NSC/45.90 kHz radio signals measurements at short distances ($D < 2$ Mm) over Central Europe and their interpretation are summarized in this paper. Attention is restricted to regular diurnal, seasonal and solar variations including sunrise and sunset effects on propagation characteristics of four VLF/LF radio signals. We study VLF/LF propagation over short path as a superposition of different number of discrete modes which depends on the variations of the path parameters. Although the solar X-ray flare effects on propagation of VLF/LF radio signals are well recognized on all paths, similarities and differences between them are defined under existing conditions over the paths. Statistical results show that the size of amplitude and phase perturbations on VLF/LF radio signal is in correlation with the intensity of X-ray flux. We present the calculations of electron density enhancements in the D-region caused by different classes of solar X-ray flares during the period of ascending phase and maximum of the solar cycle 24.

Abstract:It is known that solar flares can affect the current system of the middle- and low-latitude ionosphere. Most earlier studies have focused on such effects during their impulsive phases. Recent studies have reported flares with a significant extreme ultraviolet (EUV) late phase, the effects of which on ionospheric currents have not yet been investigated. Here, we examine the solar quiet (Sq) currents and equatorial electrojets during two X-class flares with EUV late phases using data from more than 200 ground magnetometers. Our results indicate that the ionospheric currents could be significantly enhanced during the impulsive phase, while the effects of the EUV late phase may increase the global ionospheric currents, but are often weak and thus could be obscured by a change in solar wind conditions. In the X1.8 flare event on 2012 October 23, besides the solar flare effects, the currents were modulated by solar wind pressure. In the X1.3 flare event on 2014 April 25, the solar wind pressure was weak and stable, and the Sq currents were enhanced compared to nonflare conditions. We also found that even weak changes in the solar wind dynamic pressure, with magnitudes as low as ∼2 nPa, which are often ignored, may have an appreciable impact on the global ionospheric current system.

Abstract:Effects of the extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) late phase of solar flares on the ionosphere were rarely studied. Here we simulated such effects on the ionospheric electron density using an ionosphere−thermosphere coupled model driven by the realistic solar spectrum observed during the X1.8 flare on 2012 October 23. Global total electron content (TEC) observations and simulations showed that the dayside ionospheric TEC during the EUV late phase increased more than that of the flare's main phase. We examined the performance of the model for flares with EUV late phase. The results showed that the F-region electron density enhancement and recovery did not vary in the same pace as the temporal variations of the EUV late phase, and the presence of the EUV late phase prolonged the recovery of electron density by ∼9 hr. We also found that the enhancement in electron density was mainly determined by the chemical production, while the recovery of electron density was primarily controlled by the electric field transport effects. This study enhanced understanding of the intricate physical and photochemical processes governing Earth's space environment and similar planetary systems during solar flare events with EUV late phase.

Abstract:The response of the global ionosphere to solar flares is an important topic in the field of space weather. The global ionospheric response to solar flares is comprehensively analyzed from the perspectives of total electron content (TEC) and very low frequency (VLF) signals by using solar flare data on the eruption days of X-class flares from 2006 to 2019, including flare level, flare duration, geographical location, and local time. In addition, the relationship between X-ray flux and VLF phase variation is studied through correlation analysis. The concepts of disturbance intensity (DI) and disturbance angle are defined, and a DI evaluation model is established to help detect the difference in sensitivity to solar flares between TEC and VLF signals. Results show the following. (1) The higher the flare level and the longer the duration, the greater the disturbance to the ionosphere. Simultaneously, a phenomenon exists in which the disturbance caused by low-level and long-lasting flares is greater than that caused by high-level flares. (2) VLF phase variation and flare level exhibit a good correlation, and they are also closely related to geographical location and local time. The disturbance degree of a station facing the sun is more evident than that of a station facing away from the sun. The TEC disturbance of stations in the morning (local time) is more obvious than that in the afternoon, and disturbance increases along the direction of Earth's rotation. (3) When DI is at the same level, the lowest flare level that causes TEC response is higher than the lowest flare level that causes VLF signal response. The disturbance angle of TEC is unevenly distributed within the interval [0°, 90°], and that of VLF signals is more than 85°. The sensitivity of VLF signals to flare response is considerably higher than that of TEC, and the difference between the two even stride across DI level.

Abstract:In this paper our attention is focused on relations between radio signal propagation characteristics and temperature changes in D-region af- ter solar X-flare occurrence. We present temperature dependencies of electron plasma frequency, the parameter that describes medium conditions for prop- agation of an electromagnetic wave, and the refractive index which describes how this wave propagates. As an example for quantitative calculations based on obtained theoretical equations we choose the reaction of the D-region to the solar X-flare occurred on May 5 th, 2010. The ionospheric modelling is based on the experimental data obtained by low ionosphere observations using very low frequency radio signal.
THE STUDY OF THE ELECTRON DENSITY IN IONOSPHERIC D REGION USING MF RADAR DURING FLARES PERIOD

Abstract:In this paper, the behavior of the electron density between the height of 66 and 80km observed by MF radar at Waknnai station (45.36°N, 141.81°E) during four X-class flares is studied. The sudden increase of the electron density is observed during all of the flare period. The results show that the MF radar can be used as one routine method to observe electron density of the ionospheric D region. By comparison with the soft X-ray flux, it is found that the temporal variation of the electron density in the lower D region has a good correlation with the soft X-ray flux observed by GOES. Nevertheless, the correlation is not good in the higher altitude because of the atmospheric disturbances in the D region. On the other hand, the increases of electron density depends on the parameters of these four flares, the increase of the electron density for some of flare reach as high as 400 cm-3, some of them is only about 100cm-3. Compared with the increase of the total electron content (TEC) caused by the flare with similar parameters, the total increase of electron density between the height of 66 and 80 km is only about one thousandth of TEC that almost has no effect on the delay time of the radiowave. But, the effect of the Sudden Ionospheric Disturbances caused by the increase of the electron density is very strong due to the very high number density of the atmospheric neutral compositions in the height of D region. In the end, the effective recombination coefficient at different heights is estimated using the electron density at the recovery period during the flare on Nov. 4, 1997.
Determining Energy Balance in the Flaring Chromosphere from Oxygen V Line Ratios

Abstract:The impulsive phase of solar flares is a time of rapid energy deposition and heating in the lower solar atmosphere, leading to changes in the temperature and density structure of the region. We use an O V density diagnostic formed of the 192 to 248 line ratio, provided by Hinode EIS, to determine the density of flare footpoint plasma, at O V formation temperatures of 250,000 K, giving a constraint on the properties of the heated transition region. Hinode EIS rasters from 2 small flare events in December 2007 were used. Raster images were co-aligned to identify and establish the footpoint pixels, multiple-component Gaussian line fitting of the spectra was carried out to isolate the diagnostic pair, and the density was calculated for several footpoint areas. The assumptions of equilibrium ionization and optically thin radiation for the O V lines were found to be acceptable. Properties of the electron distribution, for one event, were deduced from earlier RHESSI hard X-ray observations and used to calculate the plasma heating rate, delivered by an electron beam adopting collisional thick-target assumptions, for 2 model atmospheres. Electron number densities of at least log n = 12.3 cm-3 were measured during the flare impulsive phase, far higher than previously expected. For one footpoint, the radiative loss rate for this plasma was found to exceed that which can be delivered by an electron beam implied by the RHESSI data. However, when assuming a completely ionised target atmosphere the heating rate exceeded the losses. A chromospheric thickness of 70-700 km was found to be required to balance a conductive input to the O V-emitting region with radiative losses. The analysis shows that for heating by collisional electrons, it is difficult, or impossible to raise the temperature of the chromosphere to explain the observed densities without assuming a completely ionised atmosphere.

Abstract:The R-value is a measure of the strength of photospheric magnetic polarity inversion lines in active regions (ARs). This work investigates the possibility of a relation between R-value variations and the occurrence of X-class flares in ARs, not in the solar photosphere, as usual, but above it in regions closer to where flares occur. The modus operandi is to extrapolate the Solar Dynamic Observatory's Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager magnetogram data up to a height of 3.24 Mm above the photosphere and then compute the R-value based on the extrapolated magnetic field. Recent studies have shown that certain flare-predictive parameters such as the horizontal gradient of the vertical magnetic field and magnetic helicity may improve flare prediction lead times significantly if studied at a specific height range above the photosphere, called the optimal height range (OHR). Here, we define the OHR as a collection of heights where a sudden but sustained increase in R-value is found. For the eight case studies discussed in this paper, our results indicate that it is possible for OHRs to exist in the low solar atmosphere (between 0.36 and 3.24 Mm), where R-value spikes occur 48–68 hr before the first X-class flare of an emerging AR. The temporal evolution of R-value before the first X-class flare for an emerging AR is also found to be distinct from that of nonflaring ARs. For X-class flares associated with nonemerging ARs, an OHR could not be found.

Due to the large amount of experimental data accumulated by Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), the total electron content (TEC) response to the impulsive phase of a solar flare has been studied quite well. However, recent studies have shown that large fraction of X-class flares have second strong peak of warm coronal emission (which is called 'EUV late phase'), whose influence on the ionization of ionospheric layers is not yet clear. A combined analysis of successive solar emissions and the caused TEC changes made it possible to numerically estimate the ionospheric response to the impulsive, gradual, and late phases of the X2.9 solar flare occurred on 2011 November 3 and demonstrate the high geoeffectiveness of the rather weak Fe XV 28.4 nm solar emission during the EUV late phase. It was found that the ionospheric response to the relatively weak emissions of the EUV late phase of the X2.9 solar flare amounted to almost a third of the TEC increase during the impulsive phase.
