Abstract:Using the SuperThermal Electron Transport (STET) model coupled with the Super‐thermal Proton Electron Atomic Hydrogen—tRansport in the Ionosphere and Thermosphere (SPEAH‐RIT) codes, we demonstrate that temporal variability of ionospheric conductance is defined by several time scales: the temporal variations of the magnetospheric source, the start time of electron precipitation, and the termination of the corresponding source. In these cases, the time scales are defined by dissipation of energetic electrons and effective recombination processes. The results presented in this paper were applied in the regions of pulsating aurora and polar arcs, demonstrating the fact that ionospheric conductance requires some time to form and decay. These time delays constitute an effective "inertia" in the conductance calculation which is not accounted for in many global models which assume an instantaneous connection between precipitation and conductance. Ionospheric conductance inertia influences the temporal variation in ionospheric and magnetospheric electric fields, and as a result, impacts magnetosphere‐ionosphere (MI) dynamics on a global scale.

Validation of SSUSI-derived auroral electron densities: Comparisons to EISCAT data

Abstract:The coupling of the atmosphere to the space environment has become recognized as an important driver of atmospheric chemistry and dynamics. In order to quantify the effects of particle precipitation on the atmosphere, reliable global energy inputs on spatial scales commensurate with particle precipitation variations are required. To that end, we have validated auroral electron densities derived from the SSUSI data products for average electron energy and electron energy flux by comparing them to EISCAT electron density profiles. This comparison shows that SSUSI FUV observations can be used to provide ionization rate and electron density profiles throughout the auroral region. The SSUSI on board the DMSP Block 5D3 satellites provide nearly hourly, 3000 km wide, 10 km x 10 km UV snapshots of auroral emissions. Here we use the SSUSI-derived energies and fluxes as input to standard parametrizations in order to obtain electron-density profiles in the E region (90--150 km), which are then compared to EISCAT ground-based electron density measurements. We compare the data from DMSP F17 and F18 to the Tromsø UHF radar profiles. We find that differentiating between the magnetic local time (MLT) morning (03:00--11:00 MLT) and evening (15:00--23:00 MLT) provides the best fit to the ground-based data. The data agree well in the MLT morning sector using a Maxwellian electron spectrum, while in the evening sector using a Gaussian spectrum and accounting for backscattered electrons achieved optimum agreement with EISCAT. Depending on the satellite and MLT, the median of the differences varies between 0% and 20% above 105 km (F17) and $\pm$15% above 100 km (F18). Because of the large density gradient below those altitudes, the relative differences get larger, albeit without a substantially increasing absolute difference, with virtually no statistically significant differences at the 1-sigma level.

Abstract:Starting from the Boltzmann equation and with some reasonable assumptions, a one-dimensional transport equation of charged energetic particles is derived by taking account of major interactions with neutral species in the upper atmosphere, including the processes of elastic scattering, the excitation, the ionization and the secondary electron production. The transport equation is numerically solved, for a simplified atmosphere consisting only of nitrogen molecules (N 2 ), to obtain the variations of incident electron fluxes as a function of altitude, energy and pitch angle. The model results can describe fairly the transport characteristics of precipitating auroral electron spectra in the polar upper atmosphere; meanwhile the N2 ionization rates calculated from the modeled differential flux spectra also exhibit good agreements with existing empirical models in terms of several key parameters. Taking the energy flux spectra of precipitating electrons observed by FAST satellite flying over EISCAT site on May 15, 1997 as model inputs, the model-calculated ionization rate profile of neutral atmosphere consists reasonably with that reconstructed from electron density measurements by the radar.
Global Survey of Energetic Electron Precipitation at Low Earth Orbit Observed by ELFIN

Abstract:We statistically evaluate the global distribution and energy spectrum of electron precipitation at low‐Earth‐orbit, using unprecedented pitch‐angle and energy resolved data from the Electron Losses and Fields INvestigation CubeSats. Our statistical results indicate that during active conditions, the ∼63 keV electron precipitation ratio peaks at L > 6 at midnight, whereas the spatial distribution of precipitating energy flux peaks between the dawn and noon sectors. ∼1 MeV electron precipitation ratio peaks near midnight at L > ∼6 but is enhanced near dusk during active times. The energy spectrum of the precipitation ratio shows reversal points indicating energy dispersion as a function of L shell in both the slot region and at L > ∼6, consistent with hiss‐driven precipitation and current sheet scattering, respectively. Our findings provide accurate quantification of electron precipitation at various energies in a broad region of the Earth's magnetosphere, which is critical for magnetosphere‐ionosphere coupling.

Abstract:In the current available literature, there are findings only about the effects of energetic particle precipitation (EPP) on temperature in the mesopause region. In this article, we searched for energetic particle precipitation events using the experimental data of EISCAT VHF 224 MHz radar, and found 9 events of EPP. The mean electron densities satisfying the threshold, N e ≥ 1e 11 m –3 in the ionosphere altitude of ~121–150 km is used as a proxy of the onset of EPP. The variations in electron temperature in the E-region of ionosphere were computed using standard deviation method. We investigated the effects of EPP on electron temperature variations in the E-region of ionosphere using Spearman rank correlation coefficient method. It is found that in all 9 events of EPP, there is negative correlation between mean electron density (used as a proxy of EPP) and standard deviation of electron temperature (used for computation of electron temperature variation). Moreover, the standard deviations of electron temperature during and without energetic particle precipitation were compared. It is found that in all 9 events of EPP, the standard deviation of electron temperature during EPP is smaller as compared to the time interval without EPP. The possible reason for the negative correlation may be the enhanced volume emission ratio of the 5.3 μm band of nitric oxide (NO) during the onset of energetic particle precipitation.

Abstract:This paper reports the development of global FDTD models incorporated with a quasi-real anisotropic ionosphere consisting of magnetized cold plasmas. Compared to the existing global models utilizing simple conductivity ionospheric profiles, the algorithms reported in this paper can sufficiently extend the global-scale electromagnetic simulations to much higher altitudes as the physics introduced by the spatially-varied ionospheric plasmas and the geomagnetic field can be fully included in calculations.

Abstract:Sporadic E (Es) layers are thin layers of enhanced electron density that commonly appear at altitudes of 90–130 km, often impacting radio communications and navigation systems. The wind shear theory posits that the vertical ion drift, influenced by atmospheric neutral winds and the magnetic field, serves as a significant dynamic driver for the formation and movement of Es layers. In current studies, both the heights of ion vertical velocity null (IVN) and the maximum vertical ion convergence (VICmax) have been proposed as the potential height of Es layer occurrence. In this study, utilizing the neutral atmospheric wind data derived from the WACCM-X (The Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model with thermosphere and ionosphere extension), we computed and compared these two parameters with the observed Es layer heights recorded by the FORMOSAT-3/COSMIC (FORMOsa SATellite-3/Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere, and Climate) radio occultation (RO) observations. The comparative analysis suggests that IVN is a more likely node for Es layer occurrence than VICmax. Subsequently, we examined the height–time distributions of IVN and Es layers, as well as their respective descent rates at different latitudes. These results demonstrated a notable agreement in height variations between IVN and Es layers. The collective results presented in this paper provide strong support that the ion vertical velocity null plays a crucial role in determining the height of Es layers.

Abstract:Electron densities retrieved from the Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere, and Climate (COSMIC) radio occultation (RO) measurements are compared with those measured by incoherent scatter radars (ISR) and ionosondes in this paper. These results show that electron density profiles retrieved from COSMIC RO data are in agreement with the ISR and ionosonde measurements. The ionospheric characteristics (NmF2 and hmF2) derived from the COSMIC satellites are also compared with those calculated by the latest International Reference Ionosphere model (IRI‐2001) and the National Center for Atmospheric Research Thermosphere‐Ionosphere‐Electrodynamics General Circulation Model (NCAR‐TIEGCM). The comparison of the magnitude of the COSMIC NmF2 data with those calculated by the IRI model and the TIEGCM is good. However, features such as the north‐south asymmetry and longitudinal variation of the equatorial anomaly that are seen in the COSMIC data and the TIEGCM simulations are not fully present in the IRI model. On the other hand, the TIEGCM produces a stronger winter anomaly than that seen in either the COSMIC data or the IRI model.

CNES real-time ionospheric product accuracy analysis based on empirical orthogonal function decomposition

Abstract:Total electron content (TEC) is a key parameter in the mitigation of ionospheric effects on radio systems. This paper studied the performances of ionospheric TEC obtained from Centre National d’Etudes Spatiales (CNES) real-time ionospheric products. Taking the international global navigation satellite system service (IGS) global ionospheric map (GIM) as a reference, the deviation and root mean square of the TEC estimated by the CNES real-time TEC and NeQuick-G model were compared. Results showed that the CNES real-time ionospheric TEC and IGS GIM describe the global ionospheric temporal and spatial changes more closely. By using the empirical orthogonal function (EOF), the temporal and spatial characteristics of CNES real-time TEC and GIM TEC from day of year 230 to day of year 259 in 2021 were extracted and compared. The following main spatial variation patterns were extracted: the changes in geomagnetic latitude reflecting daily mean solar forcing and the changes in diurnal and semi-diurnal cycles. The time-varying characteristics of CNES real-time TEC and GIM TEC were compared by extracting the same EOF basis functions E1−E5\documentclass[12pt]{minimal}\usepackage{amsmath}\usepackage{wasysym}\usepackage{amsfonts}\usepackage{amssymb}\usepackage{amsbsy}\usepackage{mathrsfs}\usepackage{upgreek}\setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt}\begin{document}$E_{1} - E_{5}$\end{document}. Among them, the intensity of diurnal cycle variations contained in CNES real-time TEC is in good agreement with GIM TEC, but the intensities of changes in geomagnetic latitude and semi-diurnal cycles are weaker than those of GIM TEC.

Abstract:In recent years, significant progress has been in ionospheric modeling research through data ingestion and data assimilation from a variety of sources, including ground-based global navigation satellite systems, space-based radio occultation and satellite altimetry (SA). Given the diverse observing geometries, vertical data coverages and intermission biases among different measurements, it is imperative to evaluate their absolute accuracies and estimate systematic biases to determine reasonable weights and error covariances when constructing ionospheric models. This study specifically investigates the disparities among the vertical total electron content (VTEC) derived from SA data of the Jason and Sentinel missions, the integrated VTEC from the Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere and Climate (COSMIC) and global ionospheric maps (GIMs). To mitigate the systematic bias resulting from differences in satellite altitudes, the vertical ranges of various VTECs are mapped to a standardized height. The results indicate that the intermission bias of SA-derived VTEC remains relatively stable, with Jason-1 serving as a benchmark for mapping other datasets. The mean bias between COSMIC and SA-derived VTEC is minimal, suggesting good agreement between these two space-based techniques. However, COSMIC and GIM VTEC exhibit remarkable seasonal discrepancies, influenced by the solar activity variations. Moreover, GIMs demonstrate noticeable hemispheric asymmetry and a degradation in accuracy ranging from 0.7 to 1.7 TECU in the ocean-dominant Southern Hemisphere. While space-based observations effectively illustrate phenomena such as the Weddell Sea anomaly and longitudinal ionospheric characteristics, GIMs tend to exhibit a more pronounced mid-latitude electron density enhancement structure.

Abstract:Long-lived metallic ions in the Earth's atmosphere (ionosphere) have been investigated for many decades. Although the seasonal variation in ionospheric “sporadic E” layers was first observed in the 1960s, the mechanism driving the variation remains a long-standing mystery. Here, we report a study of ionospheric irregularities using scintillation data from COSMIC satellites and identify a large-scale horizontal transport of long-lived metallic ions, combining the simulations of the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model with the chemistry of metals and ground-based observations from two meridional chains of stations from 1975–2016. We find that the lower thermospheric meridional circulation influences the meridional transport and seasonal variations of metallic ions within sporadic E layers. The winter-to-summer meridional velocity of ions is estimated to vary between −1.08 and 7.45 m/s at altitudes of 107–118 km between 10–60∘ N. Our results not only provide strong support for the lower thermospheric meridional circulation predicted by a whole atmosphere chemistry–climate model, but also emphasize the influences of this winter-to-summer circulation on the large-scale interhemispheric transport of composition in the thermosphere–ionosphere.

Abstract:The study of electrical currents in the topside ionosphere is of great importance, as it may allow a better understanding of the processes involved in the Sun–Earth interaction and magnetosphere–ionosphere–thermosphere coupling, two crucial aspects debated by the Space Weather scientific community. In this context, investigating the electrical conductivity parallel to the geomagnetic field in the topside ionosphere is of primary importance because: (1) it provides information on the capability of the ionosphere to conduct currents; (2) it relates current density and electric field through Ohm's law; (3) it can help to quantify the dissipation of currents; (4) it is generally modeled and not locally measured by in situ missions. In this work, we used in situ measurements of electron density and temperature recorded between 2019 and 2021 by the China Seismo-Electromagnetic Satellite (CSES-01) flying with an orbital inclination of 97.4∘ and at an altitude of about 500 km to compute the parallel electrical conductivity in the topside ionosphere at low and middle latitudes at the two fixed local times (LT) characterizing the CSES-01 mission: around 02 and 14 LT. The results, which are discussed in light of previous literature, highlight the dependence of conductivity on latitude and longitude and are compared with those obtained using values both measured by the Swarm B satellite (flying at a similar altitude) and modeled by the International Reference Ionosphere in the same time period. In particular, we found a diurnal variation in parallel electrical conductivity, with a slight hemispheric asymmetry. Daytime features are compatible with Sq and equatorial electrojet current systems, containing "anomalous" low values of conductivity in correspondence with the South Atlantic region that could be physical in nature.

Abstract:Global Positioning System (GPS) computerized ionosphere tomography (CIT) and ionospheric sky wave ground backscatter radar are both capable of measuring the large‐scale, two‐dimensional (2‐D) distributions of ionospheric electron density (IED). Here we report the spatial and temporal electron density results obtained by GPS CIT and backscatter ionogram (BSI) inversion for three individual experiments. Both the GPS CIT and BSI inversion techniques demonstrate the capability and the consistency of reconstructing large‐scale IED distributions. To validate the results, electron density profiles obtained from GPS CIT and BSI inversion are quantitatively compared to the vertical ionosonde data, which clearly manifests that both methods output accurate information of ionopsheric electron density and thereby provide reliable approaches to ionospheric soundings. Our study can improve current understanding of the capability and insufficiency of these two methods on the large‐scale IED reconstruction.
A Simulation Study on the Impact of Altitudinal Dependent Vertical Plasma Drift on the Equatorial Ionosphere in the Evening

Abstract:We carry out a simulation study on the impact of altitudinal dependent plasma drift on the equatorial ionosphere in the evening, under geomagnetically quiet conditions. Our study used the vertical plasma drift velocity data measured by an incoherent scatter radar at Jicamarca (11.95°S, 76.87°W). The data covered the local sunset period on 15 and 16 November 2004. The plasma drift had significant altitudinal variations in the vertical component, which is perpendicular to the magnetic field. We employed SAMI2 (SAMI2 is another model of the ionosphere) to evaluate the effect of the altitude‐dependent ion drift on the equatorial ionosphere. Three types of plasma drift velocity inputs were used in our simulations. The first input is calculated from an empirical model, the second is a height‐averaged drift obtained from the observed drift velocity, and the third one corresponds to the observed altitudinal dependent drift data. A strong equatorial ionization anomaly occurred in the results of all numerical experiments. Additional layers ( F 3 layers) in electron densities over the equatorial F region and “arch” latitudinal structures extending to lower middle latitudes were seen in the simulations driven by the observed altitudinal dependent drift. We further show that neutral winds do not have a significant effect on the simulated F 3 layers.
