Abstract:A theoretical thermospheric circulation model is introduced in this paper. In the model, the Navier-Stokes equations have been solved to derive horizontal neutral winds based on the atmospheric temperature and densities of neutral species, which at present are taken from the latest atmospheric model (NRLMSISE-00). In this work, the zonal and meridional neutral winds are obtained from our model for seasons at moderate solar activity, mainly in East Asia. The zonal winds generally flow westward from around midnight to afternoon and reverse their direction for the rest of the day in equinox, while the phases have some differences in summer and winter. The main daily variation pattern of meridional winds is daytime poleward and nighttime equatorward in equinox. It is also found that the meridional winds blow almost southward in summer and northward in winter. In the meanwhile, comparisons of winds calculated from our model with those of the HWM93 model are carried out to see whether the models are consistent or not. For zonal winds, the results show good agreement in phases and some discrepancy in magnitudes. Our meridional winds present significant differences with the HWM93 model during solstices, while they remarkably agree in equinoxes. Finally, our model meridional winds are compared with the equivalent winds derived from the ionospheric data in Wuhan (30.6°N, 114.4°E). The results show much better agreement than with HWM93 model winds at the height of F2 peak.

A Simulation Study on the Relationship Between Field‐Aligned and Field‐Perpendicular Plasma Velocities in the Ionospheric F Region

Abstract:This study addresses a long‐standing scientific puzzle regarding ionospheric F2 region dynamics. Incoherent scatter radar observations of F2 region plasma drifts showed a strong anticorrelation between temporal variations of field‐aligned upward plasma velocity (Vi‖) and field‐perpendicular poleward plasma drift (Vi ⊥ N) over time scales from a few hours to a day at middle latitudes. The underlying physical processes remain a highly controversial issue, despite a number of speculations and qualitative inspections. Previous studies lacked especially quantitative analysis that could lead to decisive conclusions. In this study, we provide a comprehensive modeling study to explore the physical processes relating Vi‖ with Vi ⊥ N variations using a self‐consistent Thermosphere‐Ionosphere‐Electrodynamics General Circulation Model. It is found that the anticorrelation between Vi‖ and Vi ⊥ N has strong altitudinal and latitudinal dependences. The anticorrelation between the diurnal variations of Vi‖ and Vi ⊥ N is associated with the neutral wind dynamo. Poleward meridional winds result in downward Vi‖ and poleward Vi ⊥ N, and vice versa. The anticorrelation between short‐term temporal disturbances of Vi‖ and Vi ⊥ N is mainly caused by ion drag, in response to high‐latitude convection electric field forcing. This forcing penetrates to lower latitudes and affects poleward plasma drifts Vi ⊥ N, which drags poleward meridional winds and modulates downward Vi‖. As the enhanced convection electric fields subside, the anticorrelation is mainly associated with disturbance meridional wind dynamo. The storm time high‐latitude energy and momentum inputs change global meridional winds which modify zonal electric fields to induce Vi ⊥ N changes. Furthermore, ambipolar diffusion plays a significant role in modulating the relationship between Vi‖ and Vi ⊥ N.
Feasibility study on the derivation of the O+‐O collision frequency from ionospheric field‐aligned observations

Abstract:Recently, Vickers et al. (2013) used a simplified ion momentum equation to derive the ion-neutral (O+-O) collision frequency and thermospheric atomic oxygen density from the European Incoherent Scatter Svalbard Radar data. It was assumed that the vertical neutral wind at high latitudes is generally small under geomagnetically quiet conditions so that it was neglected in their derivation. Although the vertical neutral wind may indeed be small, the field-aligned neutral wind component, which needs to be taken into consideration in the ion momentum equation, can be large. Simulations with the Thermosphere-Ionosphere Electrodynamics Global Circulation Model have been carried out to evaluate the effect of the neutral wind on the estimation of the ion-neutral collision frequency from the ion momentum equation. Our results reveal that, even at high latitudes, the effect of the neutral wind can be significant in the derivation of the ion-neutral collision frequency from ionospheric field-aligned observations, especially at night.
Automatic Auroral Boundary Determination Algorithm with Deep Feature and Dual Level Set

Abstract:The morphology of the auroral oval is an important geophysical parameter that helps to further understand the solar wind-magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling process. However, it is still a challenging task to automatically obtain auroral poleward and equatorward boundaries completely and accurately. In this paper, a new model based on the deep feature and dual level set method is proposed to extract the auroral oval boundaries in the images acquired by the Ultraviolet Imager (UVI) onboard the Polar spacecraft. With the deep feature extracted by the convolutional neural network (CNN), the corresponding deep feature energy functional is constructed and incorporated into the variational segmentation framework. The dual level set method is implemented to extract the accurate poleward and equatorward boundaries with the gradient descent flow. The experimental results on the test data set demonstrate that this model can extract complete auroral oval contours that are consistent well with annotations and owns higher accuracy compared with the previously proposed methods. Comparison between the extracted auroral boundaries and the precipitating boundaries determined by Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) SSJ precipitating particle data validates that the proposed method is trustworthy to capture the global morphology of the auroral ovals.
The Response of Auroral-Oval Waves to CIR-Driven Recurrent Storms: FY-3E/ACMag Observations

Abstract:Alfven-branch waves provide an efficient means for transporting energy into the auroral oval. Here, we report observations of these waves obtained by the Fengyun-3E (FY-3E)/ACMag instruments, which are designed to detect three-dimensional AC magnetic fields in the 0.05–25 Hz band. The observations suggest that broadband waves are a permanent feature of the auroral oval, although their amplitude and locations vary with the global state of the magnetosphere. We primarily focus on the data obtained from 10 July 2021 to 26 August 2021, during which a series of recurrent storms driven by solar wind corotating interaction regions (CIRs) occurred. Analysis of the observations shows that the auroral-oval waves grow in amplitude (1–3 orders of magnitude) and shift to lower latitude (∼10°) immediately following the decrease in the SYM-H index in each storm. Further investigation reveals the response of the auroral-oval waves has a time scale equal to or less than FY-3E’s effective revisiting time, which is about 45 min. The observations presented in this paper confirm that the FY-3E/ACMag instruments provide a high-resolution monitor of the auroral-oval waves and could further our understanding of auroral physics.

A preliminary comparison of Na lidar and meteor radar zonal winds during geomagnetic quiet and disturbed conditions

Abstract:We investigate the possibility that sufficiently large electric fields and/or ionization during geomagnetic disturbed conditions may invalidate the assumptions applied in the retrieval of neutral horizontal winds from meteor and/or lidar measurements. As per our knowledge, the possible errors in the wind estimation have never been reported. In the present case study, we have been using co-located meteor radar and sodium resonance lidar zonal wind measurements over Andenes (69.27$^{\circ}$N, 16.04$^{\circ}$E) during intense substorms in the declining phase of the January 2005 solar proton event (21-22 January 2005). In total, 14 h of measurements are available for the comparison, which covers both quiet and disturbed conditions. For comparison, the lidar zonal wind measurements are averaged over the same time and altitude as the meteor radar wind measurements. High cross correlations ($\sim$0.8) are found in all height regions. The discrepancies can be explained in light of differences in the observational volumes of the two instruments. Further, we extended the comparison to address the electric field and/or ionization impact on the neutral wind estimation. For the periods of low ionization, the neutral winds estimated with both instruments are quite consistent with each other. During periods of elevated ionization, comparatively large differences are noticed at the highermost altitude, which might be due to the electric field and/or ionization impact on the wind estimation. At present, one event is not sufficient to make any firm conclusion. Further study with more co-located measurements are needed to test the statistical significance of the result.

Abstract:The continental United States is well instrumented with facilities for mid‐latitude upper atmosphere research that operate on a continuous basis. In addition, citizen scientists provide a wealth of information when unusual events occur. We combine ionospheric total electron content (TEC) data from distributed arrays of GNSS receivers, magnetometer chains, and auroral observations obtained by citizen scientists, to provide a detailed view of the intense auroral breakup and westward surge occurring at the peak of the 10–11 May 2024 extreme geomagnetic storm. Over a 20‐min interval, vertical TEC (vTEC) increased at unusually low latitude (∼45°) and rapidly expanded azimuthally across the continent. Individual receiver/satellite data sets indicate sharp bursts of greatly elevated of vTEC (∼50 TECu). Intense red aurora was co‐located with the leading edge of the equatorward and westward TEC enhancements, indicating that the large TEC enhancement was created by extremely intense low‐energy precipitation during the rapid substorm breakup.

Abstract:Although mass and energy in Jupiter's magnetosphere mostly come from the innermost Galilean moon Io's volcanic activities, solar wind perturbations can play crucial roles in releasing the magnetospheric energy and powering aurorae in Jupiter's polar regions. The systematic response of aurora to solar wind compression remains poorly understood. Here we report the analysis of a set of auroral images with contemporaneous in situ magnetopause detections. We distinguish two types of auroral enhancements: a transient localized one and a long-lasting global one. We show that only the latter systematically appears under a compressed magnetopause, while the localized auroral expansion could occur during an expanded magnetopause. Moreover, we directly examine previous theories on how solar wind compressions enhance auroral emissions. Our results demonstrate that auroral morphologies can be diagnostic of solar wind conditions at planets when in situ measurements are not possible.
