Abstract:During coarsening, the geometry of the foam changes continuously, whereas the topology of the underlying cellular network undergoes discrete transitions. The role played by topology in 3D coarsening processes is still not completely understood. Now, by means of simulations, Ihab Sabik and colleagues have investigated the geometrical and topological properties of coarsening foams in detail (I. Sabik et al. Soft Matter 20 , 6668–6676; 2024). The researchers considered dry liquid foams, in which the liquid fraction approaches zero. They prepared starting foams from periodic sphere packings, which were tessellated and subsequently subjected to an annealing process of tension and compression cycles. By running a minimization software, they obtained the equilibrium structures.
