Abstract:The structural, vibrational and thermodynamic properties of -octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine (-HMX) crystal have been studied using the isothermal-isobaric molecular dynamics (NPT-MD) simulations. The variations of cell volume, lattice constants and molecular geometry of solid -HMX are presented and discussed at different pressure and temperature. It was found that the N-N bond is significantly lengthened with increasing temperature, which suggests that it is relevant to the initial decomposition. An abrupt change at 27 Gpa for the volume and internal geometrical parameters was observed. This is in good accord with the experimental observation that there is a phase transition at 27 GPa, which is clearly due to conformational change, not chemical reaction. The vibrational frequencies at ambient conditions agree well with experimental results, and the pressure/temperature-induced frequency shifts of these modes are discussed. Frequency discontinuity was also observed at pressure when the phase transition occurred. The Gruneisen parameter was obtained using the vibrational frequency.

Abstract:CdxZn1−xO alloys, as a transparent conducting oxide, have recently attracted much attention for potential optoelectronic applications. In this letter, we report a hydrostatic pressure-induced phase transition of CdxZn1−xO alloys from the wurtzite to the rocksalt structure and its phase diagram probed using a diamond anvil cell. It is found that the transition pressure, determined by changes in optical and structural properties, depends sensitively on the composition. As the Cd content increases, the critical pressure decreases, until at x = 0.67 where the alloy is intrinsically stable in the rocksalt phase even at ambient pressure. The wurtzite phase is light emitting with a direct bandgap that slightly widens with increasing pressure, while the rocksalt phase has a much wider bandgap that is indirect. The pressure-sensitive light emission and phase transition may find potential applications in fields such as stress sensing and energy storage.

Abstract:The phase transition of ZnS from the zincblende (ZB) structure to the rocksalt (RS) structure is investigated by the ab initio plane-wave pseudopotential density functional theory method. It is found that the pressures for transition from the ZB structure to the RS structure are 17.5 GPa from total energy–volume data and 15.4 GPa from equal enthalpies, consistent with the experimental data. From the high pressure elastic constants obtained, we find that the ZB structure ZnS is unstable when the applied pressure is larger than 17 GPa. Moreover, the dependence of the normalized primitive cell volume V/V0 on pressure P can also be successfully obtained.

Abstract:The crystal structures of the quasi-one-dimensional organic salts (TMTTF)$_2$PF$_6$ and (TMTSF)$_2$PF$_6$ were studied by pressure-dependent x-ray diffraction up to 10 GPa at room temperature. The unit-cell parameters exhibit a clear anomaly due to a structural phase transition at 8.5 and 5.5 GPa for (TMTTF)$_2$PF$_6$ and (TMTSF)$_2$PF$_6$, respectively.

Abstract:A first-principles study was performed to investigate the gradient rule of crystal and electronic features, nonbonded interactions, and vibrational characteristics of series of energetic pentazole crystals (N2H5)+N5 –, (NH3OH)+N5 –, and (NH4)+N5 – under external electric fields. It is found that phase transition of (N2H5)+N5 – occurred at 0.006 a.u. and that of (NH4)+N5 – occurred at 0.01 a.u., and the phase transition are reflected in almost all properties of these energetic pentazole crystals. The analysis on electronic structure indicates that external electric field could make it easier for electrons to transition from the occupied orbitals to empty ones for (N2H5)+N5 – and (NH3OH)+N5 –, while making it more difficult for that for (NH4)+N5 –. The discussion on intermolecular interactions shows that the rearrangement and the change in the hydrogen bond network occurred. Besides, external electric field could enhance the hydrogen bond interactions for (N2H5)+N5 –, while it could weaken the hydrogen bond interactions for (NH3OH)+N5 – and (NH4)+N5 –. The analysis on vibrational properties reveals that most vibrational modes present redshift for all pentazole crystals. Our findings lay the theoretical foundation for the application of energetic pentazole materials under extreme conditions.

Abstract:The effect of pressure on crystal structures, electronic properties, hydrogen bonds, optical properties and mechanical features of high-performing energetic material 1,5-diaminotetrazole-4: N-oxide was investigated by high-precision DFT-D method. The results reveal that there exists a critical point of phase transition around 8 GPa, reflected in various properties of the crystal. Band gap decreases gradually as the pressure increases, illustrating electrons are easier to transit from occupied orbit to the empty. The DOS analysis indicates that C-NH 2 , N-NH 2 and N = O bonds may play a role as a reaction channel for the initial decomposition under high pressures. The hydrogen bond analysis indicates that pressure can alter the distribution of hydrogen bond in the crystal and modify the physicochemical properties. The absorption spectra of the crystal under high-pressure conditions show several strong bands in UV–visible region. The analysis on mechanical properties reveals that pressure can effectively improve the rigidity, plasticity and ductility for the crystal. Our results clarify the effect of pressure on energetic materials and are conducive to find the new crystalline phases for energetic materials.

Abstract:The pressure-induced tetragonal-to-cubic phase transition of PbTiO3 is investigated in the pressure range of −5 to 35GPa using the density-functional theory with the local density approximation. The spontaneous polarization and spontaneous strain, calculated as the order parameters, are found to decrease abruptly at 32GPa, while the volume of the unit cell to decrease continuously, displaying a non-purely first-order character consistent with the experimental results. The structural explanation for the crossover in the order of the phase transition in PbTiO3 (from first to second order) is generally discussed in terms of the bonding structure.

Our calculated equilibrium structural parameters of TiO 2 polymorphs are in good agreement with the experimental results. Firstly, it is worth to note that from our energy-minimized generalized gradient approximation (GGA) calculations, the four phases of TiO 2 - anatase, rutile, columbite, and baddeleyite - are seen to lie within a very close energy range (0.02eV/atom) of each other, which implies easy phase transition between them. Secondly, on the basis of enthalpy versus pressure data obtained from our GGA calculations for high-pressure forms, we demonstrate the phase transition pressure and the expected sequence of the phase transition of TiO 2 , which are in reasonable agreement with experimental observations. Finally, we calculate the elastic constants of all the TiO 2 polymorphs, and based on them, the bulk modulus, shear modulus, Young's modulus, and Poisson's ratio are estimated. The results show that cotunnite-type TiO 2 is a potential low-compressible material.

Abstract:The phase transition of β-HMX crystal has been widely studied under high pressure, but the microscopic transition mechanism is not sufficient understood. In this article, we perform a series of ab initio molecular dynamics simulations focusing on structure deformation and corresponding vibration spectra resolving of β-HMX at 0-40 GPa. Several typical pressure-induced phase transition processes are confirmed by analyzing the chemical bond, dihedral angle, charge transfer and IR, Raman spectra. The corresponding relationship between molecular structure and spectral signal is constructed through the partial spectra calculations of special functional groups within HMX molecule. The anisotropic effects of different groups on initial structural phase transition are uncovered. The equatorial C-N and axial N-N bonds have the largest compression ratio as pressure increase, which are the intrinsic factor for the initiation of structure transformation. The C-N molecular ring plays an important role in the whole phase transition process. In addition, the phase transition of β→ζ is also closely relevant with the deformation of NO2, while that of ζ→ε is induced by the axial N-NO2 group. As for the higher pressure phase transition, the synergetic effect of N-NO2, CH2 groups and molecular ring becomes more considerable.

Abstract:The effect of high pressure on the crystal structure of thiourea dioxide has been investigated by Raman spectroscopy and angle-dispersive X-ray diffraction (ADXRD) in a diamond anvil cell up to 10.3 GPa. The marked changes in the Raman spectra at 3.7 GPa strongly indicated a structural phase transition associated with the distortions of hydrogen bonding. There were no further changes up to the maximum pressure of 10.3 GPa and the observed transition was completely reversible when the system was brought back to ambient pressure. This transition was further confirmed by the changes of ADXRD spectra. The high-pressure phase was indexed and refined to an orthorhombic structure with a possible space group Pbam. The results from the first-principles calculations suggested that this phase transition was mainly related to the changes of hydrogen-bonded networks in thiourea dioxide. (C) 2015 AIP Publishing LLC.

Abstract:In situ Raman spectroscopy and synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) experiments have been performed to investigate the response of guanidinium perchlorate (C(NH(2))(3)(+) center dot ClO(4)(-), GP) to high pressures of similar to 11 GPa. GP exhibits a typical supramolecular structure of two-dimensional (2D) hydrogen-bonded ionic networks at ambient conditions. A subtle phase transition, accompanied by the symmetry transformation from R3m to C2, has been confirmed by obvious changes in both Raman and XRD patterns at 4.5 GPa. The phase transition is attributed to the competition between hydrogen bonds and close packing of the supramolecular structure at high pressure. Hydrogen bonds have been demonstrated to evolve into a distorted state through the phase transition, accompanied by the reduction in separation of oppositely charged ions in adjacent sheet motifs. A detailed mechanism of the phase transition, as well as the cooperativity between hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions, is discussed by virtue of the local nature of the structure.

Abstract:We report the results of high-pressure Raman and X-ray diffraction measurements performed on ammonium squarate ((NH(4))(2)C(4)O(4), AS), a representative supramolecular architecture based on hydrogen bonding and π-stacking interactions, at various pressures up to 19 GPa. Two phase transitions at ∼2.7 GPa and in the pressure range of 11.1-13.6 GPa were observed. Both Raman and XRD results provide convincing evidence for these two phase transitions. The first phase transition is attributed to the rearrangements of hydrogen-bonding networks, resulting in the symmetry transformation from P2(1)/c to P1. The second one, which is identified as an order-disorder phase transition, arises from significant modifications of squarate rings and random orientations of NH(4)(+) cations. The cooperative effects between hydrogen-bonding and π-stacking interactions, as well as mechanisms for the phase transitions, are discussed by virtue of the local structure of AS.

Abstract:AgClO4 has been studied under compression by x-ray diffraction and density functional theory calculations. Experimental evidence of a structural phase transition from the tetragonal structure of AgClO4 to an orthorhombic barite-type structure has been found at 5.1 GPa. The transition is supported by total-energy calculations. In addition, a second transition to a monoclinic structure is theoretically proposed to take place beyond 17 GPa. The equation of state of the different phases is reported as well as the calculated Raman-active phonons and their pressure evolution. Finally, we provide a description of all the structures of AgClO4 and discuss their relationships. The structures are also compared with those of AgCl in order to explain the structural sequence determined for AgClO4.

Abstract:In situ Raman scattering and synchrotron X-ray diffraction have been used to investigate the effects of high pressure on the structural stability of guanidinium nitrate (C(NH2)(3)(+)center dot NO3-, GN), a representative two-dimensional supramolecular architecture of hydrogen-bonded rosette network. This study has confirmed a structural phase transition observed by Raman scattering and X-ray diffraction at similar to 1 GPa and identified it as a space group change from C2 to P2(1). The high-pressure phase remained stable up to 22 GPa. We discussed the pressure-induced changes in N-H stretching vibration in Raman spectra and proposed that this phase transition is due to the rearrangements of the hydrogen-bonding networks.

Abstract:The nature of isostructural transformations of a type-I Ba8Si46 clathrate has been studied by in situ high-pressure angle-dispersive x-ray powder diffraction using liquid He as pressure transmitting medium. The good quality of the diffraction data permitted refinement of structural and thermal parameters from Rietveld analysis. The results show that the first transition at 7 GPa is caused by the displacement of the Ba atoms in the Si-24 cages. The cause of the second transition at 15 GPa, characterized by a dramatic reduction of cell volume, is not as clear. Theoretical calculations predicted an electronic topological transition of Fermi surface at this pressure. Analysis of the anomalously large Si thermal parameters suggested a highly disordered Si framework. This disordering is probably static and may be due to the presence of Si vacancies. The latter hypothesis is supported by electronic calculations on model disordered systems.
