Abstract:The high-pressure behaviors of nitrogen-rich 1H-tetrazole (CH 2 N 4 ) have been investigated by in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman scattering up to 75 GPa. A first crystalline-to-crystalline phase transition is observed and identified above ~3 GPa with a large volume collapse (∼18% at 4.4 GPa) from phase I to phase II. The new phase II forms a dimer-like structure, belonging to P 1 space group. Then, a crystalline-to-amorphous phase transition takes place over a large pressure range of 13.8 to 50 GPa, which is accompanied by an interphase region approaching paracrystalline state. When decompression from 75 GPa to ambient conditions, the final product keeps an irreversible amorphous state. Our ultraviolet (UV) absorption spectrum suggests the final product exhibits an increase in molecular conjugation.

Abstract:The structural, vibrational and thermodynamic properties of -octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine (-HMX) crystal have been studied using the isothermal-isobaric molecular dynamics (NPT-MD) simulations. The variations of cell volume, lattice constants and molecular geometry of solid -HMX are presented and discussed at different pressure and temperature. It was found that the N-N bond is significantly lengthened with increasing temperature, which suggests that it is relevant to the initial decomposition. An abrupt change at 27 Gpa for the volume and internal geometrical parameters was observed. This is in good accord with the experimental observation that there is a phase transition at 27 GPa, which is clearly due to conformational change, not chemical reaction. The vibrational frequencies at ambient conditions agree well with experimental results, and the pressure/temperature-induced frequency shifts of these modes are discussed. Frequency discontinuity was also observed at pressure when the phase transition occurred. The Gruneisen parameter was obtained using the vibrational frequency.

Abstract:The phase transitions and mechanical properties of the energetic material octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine (HMX) in three pure polymorphs crystals, alpha-, beta-, and delta-phases, have been studied theoretically. isothermal isobaric molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were performed in the temperature range of (5 to 555) K at 0 GPa and the pressure range of (0 to 40) GPa at 298 K. The lattice parameters and volumes show nonlinear dependence on the temperature and pressure. In the high-temperature regime, there exist two phase transitions, that is, from beta- to alpha-HMX at 360 K and from alpha- to delta-HMX at 440 K. Under high pressure, the beta-HMX transition to delta-HMX is shown at 27 GPa and 298 K. Within the range of temperature and pressure studies, it can be deduced that the beta-HMX at lower temperatures and higher pressures, the alpha-HMX at higher pressures, and the delta-HMX at lower temperatures have better malleability.

Abstract:The phase transition of β-HMX crystal has been widely studied under high pressure, but the microscopic transition mechanism is not sufficient understood. In this article, we perform a series of ab initio molecular dynamics simulations focusing on structure deformation and corresponding vibration spectra resolving of β-HMX at 0-40 GPa. Several typical pressure-induced phase transition processes are confirmed by analyzing the chemical bond, dihedral angle, charge transfer and IR, Raman spectra. The corresponding relationship between molecular structure and spectral signal is constructed through the partial spectra calculations of special functional groups within HMX molecule. The anisotropic effects of different groups on initial structural phase transition are uncovered. The equatorial C-N and axial N-N bonds have the largest compression ratio as pressure increase, which are the intrinsic factor for the initiation of structure transformation. The C-N molecular ring plays an important role in the whole phase transition process. In addition, the phase transition of β→ζ is also closely relevant with the deformation of NO2, while that of ζ→ε is induced by the axial N-NO2 group. As for the higher pressure phase transition, the synergetic effect of N-NO2, CH2 groups and molecular ring becomes more considerable.

Abstract:In situ Raman scattering and synchrotron X-ray diffraction have been used to investigate the effects of high pressure on the structural stability of guanidinium nitrate (C(NH2)(3)(+)center dot NO3-, GN), a representative two-dimensional supramolecular architecture of hydrogen-bonded rosette network. This study has confirmed a structural phase transition observed by Raman scattering and X-ray diffraction at similar to 1 GPa and identified it as a space group change from C2 to P2(1). The high-pressure phase remained stable up to 22 GPa. We discussed the pressure-induced changes in N-H stretching vibration in Raman spectra and proposed that this phase transition is due to the rearrangements of the hydrogen-bonding networks.

Abstract:The effect of pressure on crystal structures, electronic properties, hydrogen bonds, optical properties and mechanical features of high-performing energetic material 1,5-diaminotetrazole-4: N-oxide was investigated by high-precision DFT-D method. The results reveal that there exists a critical point of phase transition around 8 GPa, reflected in various properties of the crystal. Band gap decreases gradually as the pressure increases, illustrating electrons are easier to transit from occupied orbit to the empty. The DOS analysis indicates that C-NH 2 , N-NH 2 and N = O bonds may play a role as a reaction channel for the initial decomposition under high pressures. The hydrogen bond analysis indicates that pressure can alter the distribution of hydrogen bond in the crystal and modify the physicochemical properties. The absorption spectra of the crystal under high-pressure conditions show several strong bands in UV–visible region. The analysis on mechanical properties reveals that pressure can effectively improve the rigidity, plasticity and ductility for the crystal. Our results clarify the effect of pressure on energetic materials and are conducive to find the new crystalline phases for energetic materials.

Abstract:Due to the diversity of solid nitrogen structure, its phase transition has been a hot topic for many scientists. Herein, we first studied the structural softening of rhombohedral solid nitrogen under pressure using first-principles calculations. Then, a new criterion, Egret criterion, was proposed to predict the whole process from beginning to end of structural phase transition of solid nitrogen. Based on the discussion of acoustic phonons, we concluded that the phase transition of rhombohedral solid nitrogen starts from k-point F along the [- 1, - 1, 0] direction in a-axis, and the structural phase transition velocity is slow. Also, we use the Egret criterion proposed by us to predict the emergence of xi-N-2 and the stability of xi-N-2 at 17 GPa and 22 GPa, respectively, and this result is in good agreement with the phase diagram of nitrogen.

Abstract:The high-pressure behavior of hydrazine has been investigated by in situ Raman spectroscopy and synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiments under pressure up to 46.5 and 33.0 GPa, respectively. It is found that the liquid hydrazine solidifies into phase I at about 1.2 GPa. The symmetry of phase I is confirmed to be space group P2(1) by the peak assignment, group theory analysis, and Rierveld refinement of XRD patterns. A solid-solid transition from phase I to phase II is observed in both Raman spectroscopy and XRD experiments at about 2.4 GPa, which is ascribed to the formation of new hydrogen bonds between hydrazine molecules. At 18.4 GPa, an isostructural transition from phase II to the final phase III is observed. The pressure-induced adjustment of bifurcated hydrogen bond is first researched and regarded as the origin of the isostructural transition. Above 20.6 GPa, a clear softening behavior occurs in the NH2 symmetric stretching mode. The coupling of optical vibrations derived from enhancement of the hydrogen bond is proposed as a crucial role in this softening process.

Abstract:High pressure in situ Raman scattering and electrical resistivity measurements were performed to investigate the phase transitions in a semimetal 1T-TiTe2 single crystal up to 17 GPa. Combining anomalous experimental results with the electronic band structures and Z2 topological invariants in calculations, two topological phase transitions and one structural phase transition were confirmed at 1.7 GPa, 3 GPa, and 8 GPa, respectively. These two topological transformations are due to the enhanced orbital hybridization followed by a few of band inversions near the Fermi level, and the further parity analysis manifested that the phases II and III correspond to a strong topological state and a weak topological state, respectively. The rich topology variation of 1T-TiTe2 under high pressure provides a potential candidate for understanding the relevant topology physics and probable applications. The current results also demonstrate that Raman spectroscopy and electrical transport measurements are efficient tools to detect the topological phase transition under high pressure.

Abstract:Conclusive crystal structure determination of the high pressure phases of hydrogen remains elusive due to lack of core electrons and vanishing wave vectors, rendering standard high-pressure experimental methods moot. Ab-initio DFT calculations have shown that structural polymorphism might be solely resolvable using high-resolution nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy at mega-bar pressures, however technical challenges have precluded such experiments thus far. Here, we present in-situ high-pressure high-resolution NMR experiments in hydrogen phase III between 181 GPa and 208 GPa at room temperature. Our spectra suggest that at lower pressures phase III adopts a hexagonal P6122 crystal structure, transitioning into a monoclinic C2/c phase at about 197 GPa. The high resolution spectra are in excellent agreement with earlier structural and spectral predictions and underline the possibility of a subtle P6122 to C2/c phase transition in hydrogen phase III. These experiments show the importance of a combination of ab-initio calculations and low-Z sensitive spectral probes in high-pressure science in elucidating the structural complexity of the most abundant element in our universe.

Abstract:Introduction The evolution of molecular solids under pressure constitutes an important problem in condensed matter physics. Under compression, delocalization of electronic shells and eventual molecular dissociation is expected, leading to the formation of a framework or closed packed structures. However, this process may not necessarily be simple and direct, because of the large barriers of transformation between states with different types of bonding and molecular structures with various types of orientational order, including possible associated and charge transfer intermediate states. Nitrogen is an archetypal homonuclear diatomic molecule with a very strong triple bond. The phase diagram of nitrogen is complex at moderate pressures and temperatures. Until recently, it had not been studied much over a wider range [1]. A theoretically proposed dissociation of nitrogen molecules under pressure [2] was recently confirmed experimentally [3-5]. Here we report on the existence of two new molecular phases called ι and θ, which have exceptionally large regions of stability and metastability extending through the P-T region where ε and ζ have been thought to be the only stable phases of nitrogen. This observation establishes a new class of dense molecular nitrogen phases.
Pressure-Induced Reversible Hcp to Fcc Phase Transition of Ti: A First-Principles Study

Abstract:The structural evolution of Ti under high pressure up to 200 GPa at 0 K has been investigated by first-principles calculations based on the density functional theory. A reversible hcp to fcc phase transition of Ti at 0 K under pressure is observed. The phase transitions hcp -> fcc and fcc -> hcp occur at P similar to 81.4 GPa and similar to 133.0 GPa, respectively. Accompanied by a reversible phase transition, the axial ratio (c/a) of hcp-Ti changes from similar to 1.65 to similar to 1.91, the c axial has negative compressibility, and a axial has positive compressibility, while the change of volume is continuous. The abrupt change of hcp-Ti structure and the electron transfer behavior similar to that of fcc-Ti under pressure may promote the phase transition of hcp-Ti to fcc-Ti. The analysis of DOS indicates the fcc structure is relatively stable compared with the hcp structure at P = 90 GPa. The high pressure limit of elastic stability for fcc-Ti is similar to 90 GPa. The weak bonding between atoms under high pressure explains the structure instability of fcc-Ti.

Abstract:The first high pressure study of solid hydrazinium monochloride has been performed by in situ Raman spectroscopy and synchrotron X‐ray diffraction (XRD) experiments in diamond anvil cell (DAC) up to 39.5 and 24.6 GPa, respectively. The structure of phase I at room temperature is confirmed to be space group C2/c by the Raman spectral analysis and Rietveld refinement of the XRD pattern. A structural transition from phase I to II is observed at 7.3 GPa. Pressure‐induced position variation of hydrogen atoms in NH3+ unit during the phase transition is attributed to the formation of N―H…Cl hydrogen‐bonds, which play a vital role in the stability and subsequent structural changes of this high energetic material under pressure. This inference is proved from the abnormal pressure shifts and obvious Fermi resonance in NH stretching mode of N2H5+ ion in the Raman experiment. Finally, a further transition from phase II to III accompanied with a slight internal distortion in the N2H5+ ions occurs above 19.8 GPa, and phase III persists up to 39.5 GPa. Abstract:A first-principles-derived effective Hamiltonian is adopted to simulate the effects of high-pressure on Pb(Zr1−xTix)O3 near the morphotropic phase boundary. With increasing pressure, the induced tetragonal-to-monoclinic and monoclinic-to-rhombohedral phase transitions are observed at low temperatures, which are accompanied by significantly enhanced piezoelectric responses. By determining the pressure-temperature phase diagram, it was revealed that the M phase resides in a narrow region between the T and R phases with inclining boundaries.

Abstract:The phase transition and structural evolution of KN3 are systematically studied using first-principles density functional (DFT) methods and the particle swarm optimization (PSO) structure search algorithm under pressures up to 400GPa. For the first time, we identify three stable phases with C2/m, P6/mmm and C2/m II structure at pressures of 15.7, 41.4 and 298.6GPa. The analysis of the crystal structures of three new predicted phases reveals that the transition of N-3(-) ions goes from linear molecules to benzene-like rings and then to polymer chains induced by pressure. The study of atomic and electronic structures of three predicted phases reveals that the structural changes are accompanied and driven by the change of atomic orbital hybridization, first from sp to sp(2), and then from sp(2) to sp(3). Our result provides a new view of the pressure-induced polymerization process of metal azides. Copyright (C) EPLA, 2013

Abstract:We present a comprehensive study of the effect of hydrostatic pressure on the magnetic structure and spin dynamics in the spin-1/2 coupled ladder compound C$_9$H$_{18}$N$_2$CuBr$_4$. The applied pressure is demonstrated as a parameter to effectively tune the exchange interactions in the spin Hamiltonian without inducing a structural transition. The single-crystal heat capacity and neutron diffraction measurements reveal that the N$\rm \acute{e}$el ordered state breaks down at and above a critical pressure $P_{\rm c}$$\sim$1.0 GPa through a continuous quantum phase transition. The thorough analysis of the critical exponents indicates that such transition with a large anomalous exponent $\eta$ into a quantum-disordered state cannot be described by the classic Landau's paradigm. Using inelastic neutron scattering and quantum Monte Carlo methods, the high-pressure regime is proposed as a $Z_2$ quantum spin liquid phase in terms of characteristic fully gapped vison-like and fractionalized excitations in distinct scattering channels.

Abstract:Solid nitrogen has received widespread attention. In this paper, the calculated structural, electronic, phonon and mechanical properties are used to investigate the phase transition of solid nitrogen (space group P42/mnm). Acoustic phonons can be divided into two parts. One acoustic phonon shows that tetragonal solid nitrogen is dynamically stable at c-axis, while the remaining two acoustic phonons have virtual frequencies at a,b-axis. The virtual frequency of phonon indicates that tetragonal solid nitrogen has a structural softening process. We point out that the softening process of acoustic phonon is considered to be related to the phase transition. Based on the results in our calculation, the phase transition of tetragonal solid nitrogen starts at a,b-axis along <math>[001¯]</math> direction (from k-point Z to <math>Γ</math>). The negative group velocity of phonon is considered as the speed of phase transition. The phase transition velocity is increasing under pressure, and the low pressure corresponds to low velocity.
