Abstract:In this report, the influence post-thermal treatment on the morphological and microstructural properties of nanosilica (SiO 2 ) powder derived from wild oat straw using the alkali leaching method has been investigated. The post-thermal treatment was carried out by heating the extracted silica powder for two hours at four different temperature (600, 800, 1000 and 1200°C), in the air. X-ray diffraction results show that the as-extracted amorphous SiO 2 transform into a crystalline (Cristobalite) phase at high temperatures ≥1000°C. Nitrogen adsorption-desorption measurements show that as-extracted amorphous SiO 2 has mesoporous structure with high specific surface area of around 435 m 2 /g and pore diameter of 4.6 nm. The specific surface area significantly decreases, while the pore diameter increases after the thermal treatment. These are shown to accompany with important molecular changes as it is revealed from analysis of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy results. The data presented in this study aimed to control the morphological and structural properties of the extracted nanosilica from oat straw, which could meet the desire for a prospective application.
