Abstract:Catalysts of Au,Ag and Au-Ag bimetallic nanoparticles supported on SiO2 modified by Ni(OH)2 were synthesized via adsorption phase reaction technique in water/ethanol system.The X-ray diffraction(XRD),transmission electron microscope(TEM) and ultraviolet-visible diffuse-reflectance spectra(UV-Vis DRS) were employed to characterize the prepared catalysts.The results show that the Au,Ag and Au-Ag particles have the sizes of nanometer and disperse well on the support.When the prepared catalysts are used in the catalytic oxidation of cyclohexane with tert-butyl hydroperoxide as oxidant at mild temperature of 70℃ and without solvent,both Au and Ag show having activity under low temperature.Au-Ag bimetallic catalysts show obvious synergetic effect resulting in higher activity and stability.It was also found that the activity of prepared Au-Ag bimetallic catalysts increases with the increase of Ag content.
Study of Cyclohexane Oxidation over Au/Al_2O_3 Catalyst

Abstract:According to the problems of complexity and chloride ion residue in the preparation of gold catalysts,a preparation method to obtain supported gold catalyst Au/Al2O3 was introduced and its catalytic performance was tested for cyclohexane oxidation.Au/Al2O3 catalysts were prepared by an impregnation-ammonia washing method.Inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry(ICP-AES),X-ray diffraction(XRD) and transmission electron microscopy(TEM) were used to characterize these catalysts.The effects of gold loadings,reaction temperature,pressure and reaction time on the catalytic activity for the selective oxidation of cyclohexane to cyclohexanone and cyclohexanol using molecular oxygen as oxidant were studied.The results show that the higher the gold loading is,the bigger the size of the gold particles is and the lower the catalytic activity is.Under the reaction conditions of 150 ℃,1.5 MPa and 3 h,using Au/Al2O3 catalyst with an actual gold loading of 0.58%,the cyclohexane conversion can reach 8.96% with 93.52% of total selectivity to cyclohexanone,cyclohexanol and cyclohexyl hydroperoxide.Moreover,according to the recycling test,the Au/Al2O3 catalyst exhibites good stability.

Abstract:Metal-modified catalysts have attracted extraordinary research attention in heterogeneous catalysis due to their enhanced geometric and electronic structures and outstanding catalytic performances. Silver (Ag) possesses necessary active sites for ethylene epoxidation, but the catalyst activity is usually sacrificed to obtain high selectivity towards ethylene oxide (EO). Herein, we report that using Al can help in tailoring the unoccupied 3d state of Ag on the MnO2 support through strong electronic metal-support interactions (EMSIs), overcoming the activity-selectivity trade-off for ethylene epoxidation and resulting in a very high ethylene conversion rate (~100%) with 90% selectivity for EO under mild conditions (170 oC and atmospheric pressure). Structural characterization and theoretical calculations revealed that the EMSIs obtained by the Al modification tailor the unoccupied 3d state of Ag, modulating the adsorption of ethylene (C2H4) and oxygen (O2) and facilitating EO desorption, resulting in high C2H4 conversion. Meanwhile, the increased number of positively charge Ag+ lowers the energy barrier for C2H4(ads) oxidation to produce oxametallacycle (OMC), inducing the unexpectedly high EO selectivity. Such an extraordinary electronic promotion provides new promising pathways for designing advanced metal catalysts with high activity and selectivity in selective oxidation reactions.

Reaction gas induced activity enhancement for silver catalyst in ethylene epoxidation

Abstract:Ethylene oxide (EO) is an indispensable cornerstone chemical for producing industrial products such as cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. The Ag/α-Al 2 O 3 based ethylene epoxidation process is a successful method for producing EO on an industrial scale. However, achieving high production rates and selectivity for EO through catalyst preparation innovation has been challenging due to the elusive and non-unified reaction mechanism. In this study, a simple but effective induction procedure conducted at elevated temperatures (>260 °C) was found to enhance the activity of Ag/α-Al 2 O 3 for EO production. An 82 % increase of the EO production rate, from 1.19 × 10 −2 to 2.17 × 10 −2 mol/h/g Ag , was achieved after induction at 260 °C. Suitable gas atmosphere (e.g., O 2 , C 2 H 4 , and fully reactive gases) was found to be another requisite for successfully inducing the increase in the EO production rate. O 2 -TPD analyses showed that more subsurface oxygen was generated in a suitable gas atmosphere compared to N 2 . In-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy results elucidate the formation of carbonates on the Ag surface after induction. The presence of carbonates stabilizes more subsurface oxygen, facilitating the adsorption and dissociation of O 2 and C 2 H 4 , thereby enhancing the reaction rate of the ethylene epoxidation process. The induced high activity could be maintained stably, as there was no sign of activity decrease over a 120-hour operation after induction. Due to the induced high activity, the Ag loading of the catalyst can be reduced in industrial applications, effectively lowering production costs.

Abstract:The activity of active oxygen species on supported Ag atoms can be effectively modulated by metal–support interactions using different oxide supports. The strong interaction between Ag and Al 2 O 3 with more electrons transferred from Ag to Al 2 O 3 leads to the formation of more Ag–O 2 − (superoxide) species, responsible for the selective oxidation of ethylene to ethylene oxide. The relatively weak interaction between Ag and SiO 2 induces the generation of Ag–O (atomic oxygen) and Ag–O 2 2− (peroxide) species, which are more active for complete oxidation of CO and ethylene to CO 2 . This work is of significance for deep understanding of active surface species in atomically dispersed metal catalysts.

Abstract:High-resolution solid-state MAS NMR; hyperpolarized 129Xe NMR, SEM, and TEM; XRD; and N2 adsorption were used to investigate the role of alumina in the Mo/HBeta–Al2O3 catalyst. XRD and N2 adsorption showed that introduction of alumina into the support may protect the HBeta framework from destruction. Quantitative 29Si MAS, 27Al MAS, and MQ MAS NMR spectra demonstrated that dealumination occurs preferentially at specific T-sites in the Mo/HBeta catalyst; however, the framework aluminum in HBeta zeolites remains at the same crystallographic sites after the addition of alumina. Hyperpolarized 129Xe NMR, HRTEM, and SEM images indicate that Mo species are readily dispersed in alumina rather than in HBeta zeolites. The preferential migration of Mo species into the alumina pores may preserve the integrity of the HBeta zeolite framework and result in the moderate distribution of Mo species and acidity in the composite support. These may be correlated with the high performance of Mo/HBeta–Al2O3 catalysts in the metathesis of ethene and butene-2 to propene.

Abstract:Developing catalysts with high cost-efficiency, good oxidation activities and strong thermal resistance is an ongoing task. Herein, we present the design and synthesis of confined catalysts with Ag protected by alumina. Thermal treatment at 800 degrees C for 10 h caused neither silver loss nor deactivation of this catalyst. Instead, nanoparticles of Ag formed because of the heat/O-2-derived ripening. These highly dispersed silver species and the catalyst's mesoporous structure worked in tandem to achieve good catalytic performance for oxidation reactions, which made the aged sample a good candidate as CO elimination and gasoline particulate filter catalysts.

Abstract:The hydrogenolysis of glycerol to 1,3-propanediol has an important industrial value but remains a great challenge. Herein, a tungsten oxide hydrate (WO3 & BULL;H2O) containing Bronsted acid sites and surface oxygen vacancies was in situ grown on the surface of alumina. The coordination chemistry of WO3 on the carrier contributes to the extremely dispersed platinum and the excellent acidic property, and much more Pt-O-W interfaces are created. The synthetic Pt/H-WO3/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst exhibited much higher catalytic performance for glycerol hydrogenolysis than Pt/C- WO3/gamma-Al2O3, in which C-WO3/gamma-Al2O3 was routinely prepared by calcining the tungsten precursor (AMT) pre-impregnated on gamma-Al2O3. The success for this strategy lies in the pre-control toward the state of WO3 on the support, and several characterization techniques were performed to reveal the structure-property relationship.
Olefin Metathesis over Heterogeneous Catalysts: Interfacial Interaction Between Mo Species and a Hβ−Al2O3 Composite Support

Abstract:The effect of molybdenum content on the structure and performance of Mo/H beta-Al2O3 catalysts in olefin metathesis was examined. The optimal performance was obtained with a catalyst of 4-6 wt % Mo on a composite support of 70% H beta zeolite and 30% Al2O3. The interfacial interaction between the Mo species and the H beta-Al2O3 composite support was carefully studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), N-2 adsorption, and multinuclear magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS NMR) spectroscopy. XRD and N-2 adsorption results indicate that some interactions may occur between the Mo species and the composite support during the sample preparation. Al-27 and Si-29 MAS NMR spectra show that this kind of interaction becomes more severe and leads to the dealumination of the framework and subsequent appearance of aluminum molybdate with increasing Mo loadings. Two-dimensional Al-27 MQ MAS NMR spectra further demonstrate that the framework Al on H beta zeolite at the specific T sites could be preferentially extracted upon Mo loading, which may result in the appropriate Bronsted acidity on the support as evidenced by the quantitative H-1 MAS NMR measurements. A moderate interaction of Mo species with the support and the proper acidity may be advantageous for the cross-metathesis of ethene and 2-butene to propene over heterogeneous catalysts.

Abstract:The unsupported Cu and Ag catalysts with different oxidation states were prepared, and their catalytic performances for propylene epoxidation were investigated.The metallic Cu catalyst exhibits much higher catalytic activity and propylene oxide（PO） selectivity than Cu2 O and Cu O catalysts.The Cu0 species are the main active sites for propylene epoxidation, but Cu2 O and Cu O species are in favor of CO2 and acrolein production.The PO selectivity of 54.2 % and propylene conversion of 2.6 % can be achieved over the metallic Cu catalyst at 160 °C in initial stage, but metallic Cu catalyst would be oxidized to Cu2 O during propylene epoxidation, resulting in a sharp decrease in the PO selectivity and propylene conversion.Nanosize Ag Cuxbimetallic catalysts were prepared.It is found that adding Ag to the metallic Cu catalysts can prevent the oxidation of Cu and make Ag Cuxbimetallic catalysts more stable under the condition of propylene epoxidation.The Ag/Cu molar ratio can remarkably affect the catalytic performance of Ag Cuxcatalyst and the selectivity to PO and acrolein.After Ag Cuxwas supported on MOx-modified a-Al2O3, its catalytic performance can be improved and has a close relationship with the acid–base property of support.

Abstract:This work characterizes the adsorption, structure, and binding mechanism of oxygenated organic species from cyclohexane solution at the liquid/solid interface of optically flat alumina-supported. palladium nanoparticle surfaces prepared by atomic layer deposition (ALD). The surface-specific nonlinear optical vibrational spectroscopy, sum frequency generation (SFG), was used as a probe for adsorption and interfacial molecular structure: 1-Hexanoic acid is an overoxidation product and possible catalyst poison. for the aerobic heterogeneous oxidation of 1-hexanol at the liquid/solid interface of Pd/Al2O3 catalysts. Single component and competitive adsorption experiments show that 1-hexanoic acid adsorbs to both ALD:prepared alumina surfaces and alumina surfaces with palladium nanoparticles, that were also prepared by ALD, more strongly than does 1-hexanol. Furthermore, 1-hexanoic acid adsorbs with conformational order on ALD-prepared alumina surfaces, but on surfaces with palladium particles the adsorbates exhibit relative disorder at low surface coverage,and become more ordered; on average, at higher surface coverage. Although significant differences in binding constant were not observed, between surfaces with and without palladium nanoparticles, the palladium particles play an apparent,role in controlling adsorbate,structures.' The disordered adsorption of 1-hexanoic acid most likely occurs on the alumina support, and probably results from :Modification of binding sites on the alumina, adjacent to the particles. In addition to providing insight on the possibility Of catalyst poisoning by the overoxidation product and characterizing changes in its structure that result in only small adsorption energy changes, this work represents a Step toward using surface science techniques that bridge the complexity gap between fundamental studies and realistic catalyst models.
Increased Silver Activity For Direct Propylene Epoxidation Via Subnanometer Size Effects

Abstract:Production of the industrial chemical propylene oxide is energy-intensive and environmentally unfriendly. Catalysts based on bulk silver surfaces with direct propylene epoxidation by molecular oxygen have not resolved these problems because of substantial formation of carbon dioxide. We found that unpromoted, size-selected Ag(3) clusters and similar to 3.5-nanometer Ag nanoparticles on alumina supports can catalyze this reaction with only a negligible amount of carbon dioxide formation and with high activity at low temperatures. Density functional calculations show that, relative to extended silver surfaces, oxidized silver trimers are more active and selective for epoxidation because of the open-shell nature of their electronic structure. The results suggest that new architectures based on ultrasmall silver particles may provide highly efficient catalysts for propylene epoxidation.
Mechanistic Insights into Propene Epoxidation with O2–H2O Mixture on Au7/α-Al2O3: A Hydroproxyl Pathway from Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics Simulations

Abstract:We have studied the mechanism of propene epoxidation with O-2-H2O mixture on Au-7/alpha-Al2O3(0001) using global minimum approach, density functional theory (DFT), and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) methods. It is found that water can easily dissociate on coordinatively unsaturated surface Al sites to form a hydroxylated Al2O3 surface. The Au-7 cluster on such a surface prefers anchoring at bare Al sites and transfers from upright to flat structures with a decrease of surface hydroxyl groups. The activation of molecular oxygen via a hydroperoxyl (OOH) intermediate (i.e., O-2 abstracting a hydrogen atom from coadsorbed water) is identified to be a feasible pathway from both AIMD simulations and static DFT calculations. Additional water promotes the H-transfer process by constructing a hydrogen bonding chain with reactants. The resulting OOH turns out to be a key oxidative species for subsequent propene epoxidation. It can either dissociate into atomically oxygen species to epoxide propene or combine with propene directly, forming an important *C3H6OOH species that could be easily transformed to epoxypropane. study reveals the important role of water in propene epoxidation and may stimulate further exploration and the usage of O2-H2O mixture as oxidizing agent in other oxidation reactions.

Abstract:Direct gas-phase epoxidation of propylene to propylene oxide (PO) by molecular oxygen was studied over the MoO3-modified supported-silver catalyst. The effect of promoter and support on the performance of the Ag–MoO3 catalyst and their role were investigated by XPS, XRD, SEM, BET surface area, NH3-TPD, CO2-TPD techniques and so on. As the promoter, MoO3 plays a great role of electron- and structure-type bi-functional promoter. Of all the supports studied, ZrO2 is the most suitable one for the Ag–MoO3 catalyst. The presence of support can regulate the size of the Ag–MoO3 particles and the pore radii of catalyst, and decrease the loading of MoO3 from ∼50wt.% in the unsupported Ag–MoO3 catalyst to ∼4wt.% in the Ag–MoO3/ZrO2 catalyst. The properly weak Lewis acidic sites, the larger size of the Ag–MoO3 particles and pore channel on the Ag–MoO3/ZrO2 catalyst are beneficial to improve epoxidation performance of the catalyst. The effect of the reaction temperature and space velocity on the catalytic epoxidation of propylene was also investigated. The low temperature or high space velocity can decrease the deep oxidation of propylene oxide to improve the selectivity to PO. Over the 20%Ag–4%MoO3/ZrO2 catalyst at 400°C, 0.1MPa and space velocity of 7500h−1, the selectivity to PO of 60.3% was achieved with the O2 conversion of 4.8%; under the space velocity of 12000h−1, the selectivity to PO was 71.5% with 2.5% O2 conversion.

Abstract:Ag-catalysed ethene epoxidation is the only viable route for making ethene oxide (EO) in industry, but the active site remains elusive due to the lack of tools to probe this reaction under high temperature and high-pressure conditions. Here, aided by advanced machine-learning grand canonical global structure exploration and in situ experiments, we identify a unique surface oxide phase, namely O 5 phase, grown on Ag(100) under industrial catalytic conditions. This phase features square-pyramidal subsurface O and strongly adsorbed ethene, which can selectively convert ethene to EO. The other Ag surface facets, although also reconstructing to surface oxide phases, only contain surface O and produce CO 2 . The complex in situ surface phases with distinct selectivity contribute to an overall medium (50%) selectivity of Ag catalyst to EO. Our further catalysis experiments with in situ infra-red spectroscopy confirm the theory-predicted infra-red-active C=C vibration of adsorbed ethene on O 5 phase and the microkinetics simulation results.
Epoxidation of Propylene by Molecular Oxygen over Modified Ag–MoO 3 Catalyst

Abstract:Epoxidation of propylene to propylene oxide by molecular oxygen was studied over a modified Ag-MoO 3 catalyst. The results show that MoO 3 plays an important role in improving the efficiency of the catalyst, and a suitable content of MoO 3 is 40-50 wt%. XPS reveals that some of the silver and molybdenum in the catalyst exist as Ag + and Mo (6 - δ)+ , respectively. The promotion effect of NaCl, Ce(NO 3 ) 3 , BaCl 2 and CsNO 3 on the Ag-MoO 3 catalyst was studied. As a modifier of the Ag-MoO 3 catalyst, NaCl or Ce(NO 3 ) 3 are more suitable than BaCl 2 or CsNO 3 and the optimal loading of NaCl or Ce(NO 3 ) is about 2 wt%. Using a feedstock gas of 15.6% C 3 H 6 , 12.2% O 2 and balance N 2 without any addition of NO, EtCl or CO 2 at a space velocity of 4500 h -1 , 6.8% O 2 conversion and 53.1% selectivity to propylene oxide were achieved over the Ag-MoO 3 -2.0% NaCl catalyst at 400 °C. At 450 °C the O 2 conversion and selectivity to propylene oxide were 11.4 and 43.6%, respectively.

Abstract:Reconstruction of supported nanocatalysts often occurs in gas–solid reactions and significantly affects the catalytic performance, yet it is much less explored in liquid-phase environment. Herein, we find that highly-dispersed Ag nanocatalysts, i.e., AgOx clusters, supported on alumina, silica, and titania, can aggregate into larger Ag or Ag2O particles after immersing in liquid-phase media at room temperature. The spontaneous aggregation of AgOx clusters in liquid water is attributed to liquid-phase Ostwald ripening through dissolution of AgOx clusters into water and subsequent redeposition to form Ag2O particles. The immersion into organic solvents such as ethanol leads to reduction of AgOx clusters and further growth into Ag particles. This work reveals that liquid-phase reaction media can induce substantial structural evolution of supported nanostructured catalysts, which should be carefully considered in liquid–solid interface catalytic reactions such as electrocatalysis, environmental catalysis, and organic synthesis in liquid phase.

Abstract:The high cost of the silver catalyst for ethylene epoxidation to ethylene oxide (EO) requires the development of the catalyst with a lower silver loading and a longer catalyst life span. Preventing silver particles from clustering could help maintain the activity for EO. In this work, we applied NH 4 F solution for an etching-treatment of the α-Al 2 O 3 to improve the roughness of its internal surface before loading silver. The catalyst with etching-treated support showed close activity and EO selectivity initially when compared to the one that was prepared with untreated support while in the meantime its stability was greatly enhanced. The silver catalyst with untreated support lost its activity for EO to nearly zero after 22 days of test at 260 °C and 2 MPa(g), while the one with etching-treated support maintained stable activity from day 10 to 22. The detailed morphology study for the catalysts suggests that the loss of EO activity is mainly attributed to the migration of silver particles from the plane of the support flakes to the gaps that formed by the flakes and deep oxidation of ethylene was largely enhanced by the active sites crowded in the flake gaps. The support treatment effectively slowed down the formation of larger silver clusters and helped maintain a better dispersion of the silver particles on the support.

Abstract:Water is often involved in many catalytic processes, which can strongly affect structural evolution of catalysts during pretreatments and catalytic reactions. In this work, we demonstrate a promotional effect of H 2 O on both oxidative dispersion and spontaneous aggregation of Ag nanocatalysts supported on alumina. Ag nanoparticles supported on γ-Al 2 O 3 and Ag nanowires on Al 2 O 3 (0001) can be dispersed into nanoclusters via annealing in O 2 above 300 °C, which is accelerated by introduction of H 2 O into the oxidative atmosphere. Furthermore, the formed highly dispersed Ag nanoclusters are subject to spontaneous aggregation in humid atmosphere at room temperature. Ex situ and in situ characterizations in both powder and model catalysts suggest that formation of abundant surface hydroxyls and/or water adlayer on the Al 2 O 3 surface in the H 2 O-containing atmosphere facilitates the surface migration of Ag species, thus promoting both dispersion and aggregation processes. The aggregation of the supported Ag nanostructures induced by the humid oxidative atmosphere enhances CO oxidation but inhibits selective catalytic reduction of NO with C 3 H 6 . This work illustrates the critical role of H 2 O in structure and catalytic performance of metal nanocatalysts, which can be widely present in heterogeneous catalysis.
