Abstract:We unveil the role of carbon vacancies and propose to tailor its concentration for enhancing mechanical performance in high-entropy carbides (HECs). This is demonstrated by investigating three (WTaNbZrTi)C HEC variants with different nominal carbon contents (i.e., 45, 47.5 and 50 at%) via experiments and theoretical calculations. The increase of nominal carbon content from 45 to 50 at% leads to the decrease of carbon vacancy concentration from 15 % to 3 %, which significantly increases elastic modulus of the HEC matrix and refines the in-situ formed ZrO2 particles. The higher constraint from the rigid HEC matrix with higher modulus facilitate the retention of more tetragonal metastable ZrO2 particles in the HEC. Hence, the (W10Ta10Nb10Zr10Ti10)C50 with relatively low carbon vacancy concentration exhibits a good balance of hardness, fracture toughness and compressive strength, mainly owing to the enhanced strength of the covalent bonding in HEC matrix and the improved transformation toughening by tetragonal ZrO2 particles.
