Abstract:The reported efficiency measured from two-phase expanders remains low. Due to the inability to obtain direct measurements of the state of the working fluid and instant flash rate, it is difficult to investigate the two-phase expansion inside two-phase expanders. This work established an equivalent expansion experimental method to separate the vapor expansion and liquid flash processes in a two-phase expander to enable the direct measurement of the process parameters under equivalent expansion. The expansion volume temporal evolution profiles under the equivalent expansion experiment should be approximate with that inside the expander as much as possible, i.e., with a higher degree of equivalence. The equivalent coefficient was proposed to assess the equivalence degree between the experimental and predicted results of the two-phase expansion models. Results showed that when the equivalent rotation speed was below 6 rpm, the equivalence degree of the volume temporal change profiles between the experiment and the reciprocating two-phase expander exceeded 80 %. Simultaneously, when the equivalent rotation speed was below 10 rpm, the equivalence degree of the volume change profiles for the twin-screw two-phase expander was over 78 %. The result indicated the two-phase expansion process of the equivalent expansion experiment resembled that of the two-phase expanders.
