Abstract:In order to quantitatively characterize shale mineral interactions and interfacial mechanical properties, the micromechanical properties were investigated. The interaction mechanism and micromechanical properties of shale minerals and their interfaces were investigated by a molecular dynamics (MD) method based on classical Newtonian mechanics using shales of the Longmaxi Formation in the Changning area of the Sichuan Basin. The binding energy, radial distribution function, and mechanical deformation parameters of the interfacial system after two-by-two combinations of three minerals, quartz, illite, and calcite, interacted with each other were analyzed. The results show that the magnitude of the binding energies corresponding to the three mineral interface systems is quartz/calcite > calcite/illite > quartz/illite. The higher the binding energy, the stronger the interaction between different minerals. The interactions between different minerals are attributed to nonbonding interaction energies, with neutral minerals such as quartz contributing mainly to van der Waals interactions and basic minerals such as calcite and illite contributing mainly to electrostatic interactions. The anisotropy ratios of the three mineral interfacial systems are, from highest to lowest, quartz/calcite > quartz/illite > calcite/illite. These findings provide an important theoretical basis for optimizing the shale hydraulic fracturing target layer and the formation of hydraulic fracture network.
