Abstract:The shale failure process and shale strength exhibit apparent anisotropic characteristics. Due to limitations in experimental methods, studying the effects of heterogeneous mineral distribution on anisotropy of shale compressive strength and microscopic fractures is inadequate. In this study, the micro-heterogeneous mineral distribution in Longmaxi formation laminated shale and the anisotropy of the fracture processes were studied by using uniaxial loading experiments combined with in situ micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) real-time scanning at different loading stages. Enhanced Deep Super-Resolution Network (EDSR) was used to obtain micro-meter resolution images of the shale microstructure and fracturing processes. The heterogenous mineral distribution effects on shale strength anisotropy were discussed based on the Particle Flow Code (PFC) numerical simulation results, the single weak plane theory, and the experimental results. The results show that shale exhibits significant alternating "low-density" and "high-density" mineral bands in its heterogeneous microstructure. "High-density" hard brittle mineral boundaries guide crack deviation, affecting crack initiation, propagation, and convergence, and thus forming rough fracture surfaces. An inclined single "low-density" mineral band can cause shear slid along the mineral band edges or staged fracturing along the low-density mineral layer. Besides the bedding effect, the heterogeneous distribution of mineral aggregates is also an important factor affecting the anisotropic shale strength. The non-uniform arrangement of high and low-density mineral aggregates and weakly cemented mineral aggregates in low-density mineral band significantly impact the anisotropic strength of shale. The varied thickness and distribution distance of the mineral bands in shale increase the complexity of the shale strength anisotropy.
