Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) nanocarbon architectures have attracted great interest in materials science and nanotechnology. Here, we report the synthesis of 3D nitrogen-doped nanoporous graphene fibers (NGFs) by using chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of methane on magnesium oxide (MgO) nanowires. The obtained NGFs are composed of wrinkled graphene sheets that are interconnected into high-aspect-ratio fibers. At a CVD time of 1 min, the as-prepared NGFs attain an ultrahigh specific surface area of 2160 m(2)g(-1), approaching the theoretical value of single-layer graphene. Such NGFs have long-range electrical conductivity and facile charge transport channels, thereby offering a material platform for energy storage. As exemplified for applications in lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries, NGF/S nanocomposites are prepared and yield superior performance, such as high reversible capacity, high rate capability, and stable cycling stability. It is believed that such nanocarbon architectures will bring opportunities in energy storage as well as other applications like catalysts, nanoreactors, gas storage, and biochemistry.
