Abstract:A thorough understanding of the impact of the 3D meso-structure on damage and failure patterns is essential for revealing the failure conditions of composite rock materials such as coal, concrete, marble, and others. This paper presents a 3D XCT dataset of coal rock with 1372 slices (each slice contains 1720 × 1771 pixels in x × y direction). The 3D XCT datasets were obtained by MicroXMT-400 using the 225/320kv Nikon Metris custom bay. The raw datasets were processed by an automatic semantic segmentation method based on the Swin Transformer (Swin-T) architecture, which aims to overcome the issue of large errors and low efficiency for traditional methods. The hybrid loss function proposed can also effectively mitigate the influence of large volume features in the training process by incorporating modulation terms into the cross entropy loss, thereby enhancing the accuracy of segmentation for small volume features. This dataset will be available to the related researchers for further finite element analysis or microstructural statistical analysis, involving complex physical and mechanical behaviors at different scales.

3D Digital Analysis of Cracking Behaviors of Rocks through 3D Reconstruction Model under Triaxial Compression

Abstract:The cracking behaviors of rocks significantly affect their mechanical properties. In this paper, a digital analysis approach with X-ray Computed Tomography (CT) imagery is developed to investigate the cracking and mechanical behaviors of rocks. The damage ratio, integrity, and porosity of rocks subjected to triaxial compression are firstly defined based on X-ray CT image and the pixel coordinate system. Then, the evolution process of two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) cracks are studied via 2D CT images and reconstructed 3D fracture models, respectively. Finally, the stress–strain relationship of rocks is simulated by converting the reconstructed models to the finite-element (FE) models. The results show that the rock damage ratio, integrity, and porosity are good factors to describe the cracking behaviors, in which the evolution process of cracks is divided into five stages including: (1) the compaction of initial fissures; (2) the initiation and propagation of microcracks; (3) microcracks coalescence, i.e., the formation and stable propagation of macrocracks; (4) the unstable propagation of macrocracks; and (5) the complete failure of rock samples. The numerical stress–strain curves are in good agreement with the experiment data.

Abstract:To determine the cracking and failure characteristics of Longmaxi shale in deformation and failure under loading, cylindrical specimens were prepared to conduct a series of uniaxial compression tests. Real-time computed tomography (CT) at different stress levels were used to obtain reconstructed stereograms, and horizontal CT images and vertical slices were obtained for analysis. Based on the CT images and slices, the cracking evolution of Longmaxi shale in the horizontal and vertical direction was determined qualitatively, the quantitative distributions of crack area during the loading were revealed and the variation in crack volume at different stress levels was first obtained. Based on the grey histogram of the reconstructed three-dimensional volume, the initial mineral distribution, internal pore evolution and final crack morphologies and volumes were established and their inter-relationship was discussed. These qualitative and quantitative results are necessary to characterize and understand the cracking evolution and failure characteristics of the Longmaxi shale.

Abstract:Soil and rock mixture (SRM) is very common in engineering as a type of extremely heterogeneous and anisotropic geological material. SRM is easy to fracture and damage under external forces, which often causes geological disasters, such as landslide and debris flow. Therefore, study on the progressive fracturing of this material is very important for geological engineering. In this paper, uniaxial compression test with real-time computed tomography (CT) scanning was conducted on SRM samples (with rock percentage of 40%). The evolutions of visible fractures, invisible fractures in CT slices, average density and heterogeneity of the sample during loading process were all studied quantitatively. This research finds that invisible fractures occur soon once loading begins, gradually accumulate in elastic deformation stage, and finally form visible fractures in plastic deformation stage. Average density of the whole sample slightly declines, while heterogeneity greatly increases during the evolution of fracturing.

Abstract:This work aimed to quantify the physical and mechanical behavior of three-dimensional microstructures in rocks under uniaxial compression. A high-precision in situ XCT (X-ray transmission computed tomography) technology was applied to investigating the behavior of mineral grains in sandstone: the movement, the rotation deformation, and the principal strains between fault zone and non-fault zone. The results indicate that after unloading, the shear strain of mineral grains is periodic in the radial direction, the strain of mineral grains in the fracture zone is about 30 times of the macro strain of the specimen, which is about 5 times in the non-fracture zone, and the shear strain near the fault zone is larger than the compressive strain, and there is the shear stress concentration feature.

Abstract:Rock abrasivity is one of the main factors affecting the wear of rock-cutting tools, which is usually quantified by the CERCHAR Abrasivity Index (CAI). Researchers and engineers study tool wear and predict tool life based on the CAI of rocks. However, there is still a lack of a dataset on rock properties, especially the abrasivity of various rocks. This paper reports the abrasive dataset of 10 kinds of rocks, including sedimentary rocks, metamorphic rocks, and igneous rocks, with the aid of the CERCHAR Abrasivity Test and digital measurement techniques. The dataset comprises rock abrasivity data, point cloud data for visualization, scratch photos, CERCHAR Abrasivity Test force data, and mechanical properties (uniaxial compressive strength) of rock samples. This dataset facilitates future research on rock abrasivity and rock-cutting tool wear.

Abstract:Developed along the south margin of the Lhasa terrane, the Cretaceous Xigaze forearc basin consists of mainly siliciclastic rocks interbedded with minor marls and limestone, recording the north subduction of the Neotethys to the Lhasa terrane. The Xigaze forearc basin includes the Chongdui, Sangzugang, Ngamring, Padana and Qubeiya formations, with overlying Quxia and Jialazi formations deposited during the initial India-Asia collision. The forearc basin has been well-studied during decades due to completed preservation and well-exposure. However, basic petrological data published is still limited, and petrological work has to be carried out repeatedly. Therefore, a total of 191 pieces of Cretaceous clastic rocks collected from the Chongdui, Ngamring and Padana formations were selected and taken photos by polarized light microscopes in Nanjing University, so as to better share and use these basic geological data. The selected rock samples include 5 shales, 2 siltstones, 158 sandstones, 11 conglomerates, 7 gravels, 7 siliceous rocks and 1 pyroclastic rock. In addition, the dataset also contains the detailed information of 10 stratigraphic sections where these rock samples are located. Besides providing materials for basic geological research, this dataset of Cretaceous rocks can also be applied to interdisciplinary cooperative research, like artificial intelligence recognition.
A New Workflow of X-ray CT Image Processing and Data Analysis of Structural Features in Rock Using Open-Source Software

Abstract:Abstract X-ray computed tomography (CT) images of rock specimens often contain artifacts which must be corrected before scientific analyses are performed. This paper presents a new workflow of automated image processing to utilize poor-quality X-ray CT scan images. The workflow runs on the open-source image analysis software and efficiently separates desired features from low-contrast scanned images. The new workflow is a two-step technique using contrast enhancement and automated feature segmentation to generate noise-free binary images. The results of binary images using the proposed workflow and using a conventional thresholding technique are analyzed to show the quality of the proposed method. The paper also presents a workflow of estimating the structural geometries of features in two and three dimensions. The results of the structural feature analyses and computational time were compared between the open-source (ImageJ) and commercial image analysis software (Bruker Computed Tomography Analyzer). The commercial software was more computationally efficient, but the task-specific macros in open-source software enabled the user-desired automation in image processing and data extraction of desired structural features of comparable quality.

Quantifying and analyzing rock trait distributions of rocky fault scarps using deep learning approach

Abstract:We apply a deep learning model to segment and identify rock characteristics based on a Structure-from-Motion orthomap and digital elevation model of a rocky fault scarp in the Volcanic Tablelands, eastern California. By post-processing the deep learning results, we build a semantic rock map and analyze rock trait distributions. The resulting semantic map contains nearly 230,000 rocks with effective diameters ranging from 2 cm to 250 cm. Rock trait distributions provide a new perspective on rocky fault scarp development and extend past research on scarp geometry including slope, height, and length. Heatmaps indicate rock size spatial distributions on the fault scarp and surrounding topographic flats. Median grain size changes perpendicular to the fault scarp trace with the largest rocks exposed on and downslope from the scarp footwall. Correlation analyses of the segmented fault scarp illustrate the relationship between rock trait statistics and fault scarp geomorphology. Local fault scarp height correlates with median grain size (R2 of 0.6), the mean grain size of the largest rocks (R2 of 0.76), and the ratio of the number of small to large rocks (R2 of 0.40). The positive correlation (R2 of 0.81) between local fault scarp height and standard deviation of grain size suggests that rocks on a higher fault scarp are less well sorted. The correlation analysis between fault scarp height and rock orientation statistics supports a particle transportation model in which locally higher fault scarps have relatively more rocks with long axes parallel to fault scarp trace because rocks have a larger distance to roll and orient the long axes. Our work demonstrates a data-driven approach to geomorphology based on rock trait distributions, promising a greater understanding of fault scarp formation, as well as many other applications for which granulometry is an indicator of process.

Abstract:A uniaxial compression CT scan test with rock specimen was carried out by using the in- dustry computer tomography(ICT)equipment and the loading equipment.Clear CT images were obtained,which identified the rock specimen's micro crack growth in different stress stage.Accord- ing to the CT images gray value,the meso-damage evolution of impact tendentious seam floor rock under uniaxial compression was analyzed.The results indicated the crack growth mode of rock.The paper provides useful experimental basis for further study on rock damage mechanism and rockburst mechanism.

Abstract:The rock material features random distribution's microscopic hole and cracks.The rock macroscopic breaks are closely related to the internal microcrack's distribution as well as their growth and opening.The change of the rock material's internal hole and the slit region size distribution along with the stress change process were clearly observed through analysis of the rock CT images.The fractal dimension was used to analyze the fracture growth to the rupture process of rock.The rock breakage mechanism was revealed through analysis of the creation,growth and opening of rock crack.This analysis introduces the microscopic hole and the crack distribution to the mesomechanic model accurately and builds the foundation to connect the rock material's internal structure and the macroscopic mechanical properties.
Quantification Analysis of Geometric Characteristics of Micro Crack Network on Fault Rock Surface

Abstract:Faults are common water conduits in coal mines, with variable permeability based upon the extent of cracks along the fault plane. In this study, three samples from a fault were obtained from a mining area in Southwest Shandong, China to determine the geometric characteristics, including crack density, fractal dimension, and crack connectivity. For microstructural analysis of fault rock specimens, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD), and plane-polarized light microscopy tests were used, and the geometric characteristics were calculated. A nonuniformity coefficient that considers the mineral composition is proposed to describe the micro-crack network of fault rocks. The results show that there is a significant positive correlation among three geometric characteristic parameters, and the nonuniformity coefficient is positively correlated with those parameters of the crack network. The crack extension forms of the three fault rock samples are different, which is related to the different fracture toughness of the mineral particles. The optical photomicrographs and SEM images show that crack networks are most developed in the samples with the least clay content. There is a negative correlation between clay content and the geometric parameters of the crack network, which may be related to the friction coefficient of clay.

Abstract:The geological parameters of rock discontinuities are of great significance for the evaluation of high-level radioactive waste repository and underground research laboratory (URL) site characteristics. To provide sufficient basis for the construction of the Xinchang URL site, this paper presents a comprehensive set of methods for acquisition of discontinuity parameters. In this set of methods, a high precision three-dimensional point cloud model of an outcrop with real geographic information is established based on close-range photogrammetry technology, from which not only planar discontinuities but also linear discontinuities can be identified and extracted by a semi-automatic method. A new fast-fuzzy clustering method is proposed to cluster discontinuity sets. The statistics method based on topographic window projection is improved to increase the rationality of estimating the geometric characteristics of fracture traces. As a preliminary validation, the results of this case study reveal that these methods have good applicability in acquiring discontinuity parameters, which is also conducive to the establishment of a deterministic-stochastic discrete fracture network (DSDFN) model to further analyze the properties of fractured rock mass. In addition, it is preliminarily found that some outcrops different locations have structures with similar geological features to a certain extent; moreover, the fractures exposed on the outcrop surface have distribution characteristics similar to those in the granite body obtained by drilling. Above all, the presented multidisciplinary methods could provide an alternative and practical approach for low-cost and accurate acquisition of discontinuity parameters, and thus, to study the properties of fractured rock mass effectively.

Abstract:Rock samples may be analyzed using high-resolution elastography to learn more about fluid movement and stress changes inside rocks. The creation of novel rock core acoustic measurement techniques will also contribute to a deeper comprehension of reservoir geomechanics characteristics. Currently. By quantitatively characterizing the link between rock elasticity and reservoir physical parameters using high-resolution photography of the actual rock core pore structure and numerical modeling. Digital rock physics successfully overcomes the drawbacks of conventional rock physics techniques. The skeleton and the pores are the only components of the core that are separated in the typical digital core study. It makes it hard to portray the rock sample’s elastic properties as well as the genuine structure and material composition of the core. In this context, more practical elastic parameter imaging technologies must be taken into account. The elastic characteristics of rock samples may be precisely characterized using ultrasonic tomography technology, which can also be utilized to find interior flaws or heterogeneity. Full waveform inversion, nevertheless, has lately attracted more attention. We can build a more accurate “elastic parameter model of rock samples” using all the waveform data.

Abstract:The structural characteristics of rock mass are crucial for the planning and construction of geotechnical engineering. Traditional methods for obtaining rock mass fracture locations rely on expensive drill core sampling and analysis tests. The testing period is long and affects normal on-site construction. In this study, a self-developed measurement while drilling (MWD) system was used to conduct drilling experiments in a limestone mine. Firstly, a method was developed to extract effective drilling data from the entire process of MWD data. Then, a comparative analysis was conducted between the obtained effective drilling data and borehole images. The study revealed significant responses of thrust force, rotation torque, air quantity, and penetration rate to rock mass fractures. The appearance of fractures leads to a varying reduction in both thrust force and air quantity, while rotation torque and penetration rate show a significant increase. Finally, the Composite Fractures Index (CFI) was established to identify rock mass fractures based on the response characteristics of these four drilling parameters and rock mass fractures. The results indicate that the CFI can effectively identify the location of fractures in the rock mass. It offers a dependable engineering surveying solution for real-time and accurate identification of rock mass fractures.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to investigate the damage cracking characteristics of rock and soil aggregate (RSA) by X-ray computed tomography (CT) under uniaxial compressive loading. The mean CT value for the region of interest (ROI) is used to analyze the cracking characteristics. Also, the mathematical morphology method based on the image threshold segmentation is used to obtain characteristic parameters of cracks to describe the cracking evolution of RSA. Results show that the elastic mismatch between rock blocks and soil matrix is the primary reason for RSA cracking. The mean CT value for the RSA specimen, rock block inclusions, and their adjacent soil regions decreases with the increasing stress level. However, it is more sensitive for block inclusions than soil regions. Using the image segmentation method, length, area and mean width of cracks obey to power function distribution. Crack statistical characteristics are closely related to the rock block’s distribution and morphology. These results may be useful to reveal the mesoscopic cracking mechanism, establish meso-damage evolution equation, and constitutive relation for RSA.

Abstract:Elastic waves provide valuable information for rock nondestructive testing (NDT). We design a highly efficient data collection method for nondestructive testing of rock samples, through which thousands of NDT data are collected from various rock samples with defects. This dataset not only facilitates defect classification and broader time‐series analysis but also offers valuable material for exploring AI‐powered NDT methods in geotechnical engineering. The internal defects in rock masses can significantly impact the quality and safety of geotechnical projects. Mechanical waves, as a common nondestructive testing (NDT) method, can reflect the external and internal structures of rock or rock masses. Analyses on the reflected and transmitted waves enable nondestructive identification and assessment of potential defects within rocks. Previous studies mainly focused on the variation of single or limited wave features like main frequency, amplitude and energy between the intact and non‐intact samples. In fact, most information contained in the waveforms is neglected. Techniques of data mining can provide a powerful tool to reveal this information and therefore a more accurate determination of the internal structures. In this study, 995,412 NDT data from 14 types of granite and gypsum samples with different cross‐section shapes and different types of defects are recorded by an ultrasonic wave generation and collection system. This dataset can be used not only as the training data for defect classification in NDT but also as a good reference for conventional NDT analyses. Besides, time‐series data analysis is an opportunity and challenging issue, this dataset holds great potential for broader application in general time‐series classification analysis.
