Abstract:In this paper, the effect of initial overload on the low cycle fatigue life of GH4169 alloy at different temperatures was studied. The plate specimen with a central hole was designed to perform low cycle fatigue tests at 20 degrees C, 500 degrees C and 650 degrees C with variable initial overloads. Results showed that the subsequent crack propagation rate depended on both overload ratio and following test temperature, and excessive overload treatment would also damage the surface or internal grains of the specimens through fracture characteristics under SEM. A finite element model was adopted to analyze the residual stress and stress-strain field at the edge of the central hole. Then, the stress and strain data were input to three strain-based model to predict the fatigue life of GH4169 alloy considering residual and mean stresses. Based on the combination of the experimental results and model prediction, the suggestion to improve the fatigue life of GH4169 alloy by initial overload can be put forward as following: a single initial overload makes the maximum local stress reach 90 %-93.5 % of the true ultimate stress of the material, so as to maximize its fatigue life.

Abstract:Low-cycle fatigue (LCF) behavior of nickel-based precipitation-strengthened superalloy GH4145/SQ was investigated systematically under fully reversed total strain amplitude control conditions at 538°C in laboratory air. It was shown that the alloy exhibited a pronounced initial fatigue hardening followed by continuous fatigue softening to failure at high strain amplitudes, while at low strain amplitudes the initial hardening was followed by a well-defined saturation stage. Microstructure observations using optical and transmission-electron microscopy revealed that slip band density increased with increasing total strain amplitudes and the size of the γ′precipitates tended to reduction due to repeated shearing by the dislocations with continuous cyclic straining. The above changes in microstructures during cycling were essentially responsible for the fatigue hardening–softening behavior of the alloy. Both optical and SEM micrographs indicated that at low strain amplitudes crack propagation was basically transgranular, while at high strain amplitudes crack propagation was essentially intergranular. Bilinear behavior with a change of slope at a plastic strain amplitude of about 0.2pct was observed in cyclic stress–strain (CSS), Coffin–Manson (C–M) and plastic strain energy–life plots. A change in the number of operating slip systems and the fracture modes with the strain amplitude employed was used to explain this two-slope characteristic. In both the companion specimens test (CST) and the incremental step test (IST) methods the alloy exhibited non-masing type behavior. It was suggested that, for the first approximation, the half-life plastic strain energy could be calculated directly according to the equation without reckoning in the non-masing behavior.

Abstract:A series of experiments, including constant amplitude low-cycle fatigue tests, uniaxial tension failure tests, TEM observations and SEM examinations, were carried out to investigate the effect of cyclic straining at a temperature of 538°C on the static mechanical properties, the deformation microstructures and the fracture behavior of nickel-base superalloy GH4145/SQ. The change characteristics of the various basic static mechanical property parameters, such as the yield strength (σ0.2), the ultimate strength (σb), the modulus of elasticity (E), the reduction of area (φf), the elongation (δ) and the strain-hardening exponent (n), during elevated-temperature low-cycle fatigue of the alloy were obtained experimentally and their micromechanisms were further discussed through analyzing both deformation microstructures and fracture features of the cyclically deformed specimens. A composite static mechanical property parameter called static toughness (Ut) was proposed to characterize comprehensively the variation of the various basic static mechanical property parameters (σ0.2, σb, φf and n), and an approximate formulation describing the exhaustion of the static toughness during high-temperature fatigue failure process was constructed. A quantitative correlation between the exhaustion of the static toughness and the dissipation of the cyclic plastic strain energy during the course of high-temperature fatigue failure of the current alloy was developed in theory and further verified in experiment.

Abstract:Laser powder-bed fusion (L-PBF) technology possesses unique advantages in building complex-shape alloys. The microstructure and high temperature low-cycle fatigue behavior of L-PBFed GH3536 superalloy at 855 degrees C were investigated, and the influence of heat treatment on microstructure and fatigue performance was revealed. By combining different fatigue life prediction models, the fatigue damage behavior of L-PBFed GH3536 superalloy at various strain amplitudes was discussed. These results are important for high temperature low-cycle fatigue life prediction and application of additive manufactured metal part.

Abstract:The effect of the reverse cyclic straining and the creep loading on the resultant tensile mechanical properties, such as the strength parameter (σ0.2 and σ b ), the ductile parameter (δ and ϕ f ) and the composite parameter of the strength and ductility, the static toughness (U t ), for the precipitation-strengthened nickel-based superalloy GH4145/SQ used for high-temperature turbine and valve studs/bolts in power plant was investigated systematically at a temperature of 538°C. The experimental results show that in the case of the reverse cyclic straining both σ0.2 and σ b increases at early stages of cyclic straining and, after reaching their saturated values, σ0.2 remains relatively constant until about 90% of fatigue life, while σ b exhibits continuous reduction up to a level equal to the maximum applied stress amplitude. With the increasing number of straining cycles, both δ and ϕ f as well as U t decrease significantly until final fracture. In the case of creep loading the strength parameters (σ0.2 and σ b ) tend to increase, as a whole, while the ductile parameters (δ and ϕ f ) and the static toughness (U t ) exhibit continuous decrease characterization as the amount of the creep deformation increases. The variation of the aforementioned various tensile mechanical properties during cyclic straining and creep loading of the alloy was further discussed by means of the observations of the deformation microstructures as well as the examinations of the fracture features of the specimens.

Abstract:In this study, the effects of residual stress induced by three different cooling methods during heat treatment on the crack propagation behaviour of the GH4169 disc were investigated. Different levels of stress fields were induced to the specially designed discs by using air cooling (AC), air jetting cooling (AJC) and water quenching (WQ) methods and were quantitated by numerical simulation. These discs were then subjected to prefabricated cracking, and crack propagation tests were conducted on a spin tester with two load spectrums. Crack growth behaviour was depicted via the surface replica technique and fracture morphology. Regarding the linear superposition of residual stress and centrifugal force, the crack propagation behaviour of different discs was simulated using the FRANC3D software. AJC and WQ introduced compressive residual stress (−259 MPa and −109 MPa, respectively) into the disc compared with the AC method (about −1.5 MPa). The AJC method increases the crack propagation life of the disc by introducing residual compressive stress into the area near the surface of the central hole to inhibit the opening of the crack surface. When the fatigue load was low, this inhibition effect was more significant.

Abstract:Low cycle fatigue (LCF) tests were performed at various strain amplitudes ranging from 0.2 to 0.8% to investigate the effects of strain amplitude on cyclic softening behavior and LCF lifetime of new ferrtic P92 steel. LCF tests were conducted under strain controlled in fully reversed manner with strain rate of 1.0 × 10−3 s−1 at high temperature of 650 °C. A novel fatigue life end criterion was adopted in this analysis. The effects of strain amplitude on the cyclic softening behavior, the evolution of plastic strain amplitude, hysteresis loop area, and the fatigue life were discussed. Similar softening curves were achieved except for the strain amplitude of 0.2%. The evolution of hysteresis loop areas at the smaller strain range amplitude (less than 0.4%) is contrary to the larger ones. A modified life prediction model was proposed based on Coffin–Manson model and energy‐based model, comparison of predicted lifetime and experimental data shows that the model gives a good estimation. In order to better understand the basic stress‐strain behavior, time‐independent cyclic plasticity model was used to represent the cyclic mechanical behavior of this steel. Comparison of the simulated and experimental results shows that the proposed model can give a reasonable prediction of stress‐strain hysteresis loop for P92 steel at high temperature.

Abstract:Low cycle fatigue tests of original ferritic P92 steel at high temperatures and different strain amplitudes were conducted to investigate its cyclic softening behavior and fracture behavior. LCF tests of strain amplitudes ranging from ±0.2% to ±0.8% were performed in fully reversed manner with constant strain rate at 600 °C and 650 °C. In order to represent the different hysteresis stress-strain curves and the cyclic softening behavior of P92 steel, a cyclic plastic material model was used. In the model, improved nonlinear isotropic hardening parameter was proposed to make better simulation of the cyclic softening behavior. Based on the simulated stress-strain hysteresis loops, an energy-based life prediction model was used to predict the low cycle fatigue life. When compared with experimental responses, the simulations and predicted life were found to be quite reasonable. Low cycle fatigue fractography of the P92 steel was also observed, and it was found to be associated with the different strain amplitudes imposed on the specimen, the larger strain amplitude the more amounts of crack initiation sites could be found.

Abstract:The FGH96 alloy as a common material for preparing turbine discs, can withstand high- and low-cycle combined loading during service, which significantly affects its fatigue performance. In this work, the combined high and low cycle fatigue (CCF) behavior of the FGH96 alloy was explored at various low cycle stress amplitudes (600, 630, 650, 680, and 700 MPa) using a self-improved experimental platform at a high temperature of 650 °C. The results indicate that increasing the amplitude of the low-cycle stress decreases the service endurance of the FGH96 alloy at CCF condition. Under the same low cycle stress amplitude, its CCF life of alloy is lower than the pure low cycle fatigue life. A fatigue service life prediction model, grounded in the theory of crystal plasticity, has been developed to assess the combined fatigue service life across different low-cycle stress amplitudes. A comparison between the predicted and actual lifespan showed that the predicted lifetime fell within a range three times the scattering band.

Abstract:Mechanical properties of metallic materials gradually degrade under high-temperature low cycle fatigue (HTLCF) loading, which is a manifestation of fatigue damage accumulation. In this study, a mapping modeling is developed to determine the relationship between micro-scale HTLCF damage and macro-scale mechanical property degradation. Strain-controlled HTLCF tests in GH4169 superalloy are carried out at 650 °C and interrupted at various lifetime fractions for subsequent microscopic characterizations and high-temperature tensile tests. Quantitative analysis of electron backscatter diffraction indicates a three-stage increase in kernel average misorientation and geometrically necessary dislocation throughout the cyclic process, along with variations in the fraction of different grain boundaries. Simultaneously, the evolutions of shearing precipitate and de-twinning are characterized using transmission electron microscope. Furthermore, the mechanical properties of GH4169 superalloy, such as yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, elongation and work-hardening rate, demonstrate different degradation characteristics after exposure to HTLCF damage. Based on these results, the mechanism of HTLCF-induced mechanical property degradation is clarified and the mapping modeling is established using tensile plastic strain energy density and kernel average misorientation. Finally, a damage level evaluation method for engineering components is developed after the generality and flexibility of model is verified in different high-temperature materials.

Abstract:The fatigue tests at 200 °C and 400 °C were conducted to investigate the elevated-temperature fatigue behavior of additively manufactured (AM) Ti-6Al-4V alloy with hot isostatic pressing (HIP) treatment. Since the manufacturing defects (i.e., pores) were significantly reduced by HIP treatment, no specimen failed from the pores. Consequently, the present AM Ti-6Al-4V alloy behaved superior to that without HIP treatment. Moreover, the specimens exhibited different failure mechanisms at 200 °C and 400 °C. Fatigue crack initiation at 200 °C mainly was due to surface deformation and strain localization, while the cause became fracture of surface oxygen-rich layer at 400 °C.

Abstract:During hot end components service, i.e., startup and shutdown processes, the cyclic stress caused by the asymmetry loading conditions is introduced. To study the effect of mean stress on the cyclic response, the low cycle fatigue, failure mechanism and life prediction model of additively manufactured (AMed) Inconel 625 superalloy at room temperature (RT) and service temperature (600 °C ) with strain ratio R=-1 and 0.1 are conducted. Experimental results indicate that the different cyclic softening and hardening behavior at RT and 600 °C is the result of competition between dislocation slip, back stress hardening and second phase precipitation. According to the evaluation of the internal stress variables, the long-range back stress plays a crucial role to control the cyclic behavior of the alloy. At RT, the heterogeneous grain structure introduced by additive manufacturing causes the back stress hardening, making the material exhibit high fatigue performance. But this hetero-deformation induced (HDI) strengthening is inhibited at high temperatures due to the uniform distribution of dislocations. In addition, a low cycle fatigue life prediction model based on critical plane method is established which presents an easily assess to evaluate the low cyclic fatigue life of an AMed material under various test condition.

Abstract:Micro-mechanical response to overheating events is an important factor when considering the serviceable life of aero-engine components. A key lifing consideration is the low-cycle fatigue (LCF) behavior of nickel-based single-crystal superalloy components. In this study, the LCF response was investigated at different overheating temperatures (1100 to 1300 °C) and times (30 to 120 min). The overheating events had an impact on the γ' phase content, which was observed to decrease with the increase in overheating temperature and time (fully dissolving at 1300 °C). Due to the dissolution of γ' precipitates, the average γ' size was shifted to larger values, however, the subsequent cooling post the overheating events resulted in the formation of tertiary γ' and a bimodal particle distribution. During the LCF tests, that were performed after the overheating exposure, either cyclic hardening or softening was observed. It could be concluded that overheating exposures had no significant effect on the fracture features. However, overheating events resulted in a decrease of LCF properties, which was correlated to the local dislocation response.

Abstract:High-speed ballistic impact tests were conducted at room temperature and 500 °C on nickel-based superalloy GH4169 simulated blade specimens containing leading-edge features. The microscopic characteristics of the impact notch at room temperature versus 500 °C were observed by electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), and it was found that the grains on the notched subsurface were ruined, while in more distant regions, the impact energy was mainly absorbed by grain boundaries. Internal damage is more concentrated in the notched subsurface region at 500 °C compared to room temperature. The high cycle fatigue strength of the damaged specimens under different conditions was tested. The results showed that the high cycle fatigue strength of the damaged specimens increased with the increase in the notch depth, and the fatigue strength of the damaged specimens at 500 °C was higher than the fatigue strength at room temperature. Both the 48 h post-impact holding time at 500 °C and the preload during impact at 500 °C increased the fatigue strength of the damaged specimens.

Abstract:In this study, the high cycle and very high cycle fatigue behavior of the GH4169 superalloy was investigated. The results of the fatigue tests demonstrated that failures in the high cycle fatigue regime were initiated from the material surface, whereas failures in the very high cycle fatigue regime had two competing modes of crack initiation: surface and internal. The fatigue fracture analysis revealed a quasi-cleavage fracture mode with facets for internal crack initiation. Additionally, the electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) results indicated that the dislocations located at the internal twin boundaries of the material were preferentially activated under fatigue cyclic loading, resulting in significant strain localization at the twin boundaries. The {111} <110> slip systems with high Schmid factors had a higher probability of activation. The stress intensity factor (SIF) estimated based on rough area (RA) and facet sizes correspond to the fatigue long crack and short crack growth thresholds of the material, respectively. Finally, a modified FIP fatigue life prediction model was proposed based on the microstructure of crystallographic facets, and the results from experiment and the model prediction were found to be in good agreement.

Abstract:Fire brings lasting effects on mechanical performance of structural steel. For the high strength steel (HSS) structures experiencing fire while do not collapse, it is necessary to evaluate the service performance after fire, including the ability to resist earthquake. During earthquake, the low–cycle fatigue load is applied on the structural steels. In this paper, the low–cycle fatigue properties of Q690 HSS exposed to different elevated temperatures are investigated experimentally. Totally, five exposure temperature levels (25, 600, 700, 800 and 900 °C) and four fatigue strain amplitudes (1%, 1.5%, 2% and 4%) are considered. After the heating test, the appearance characteristics and microstructures of Q690 HSS specimens are discussed. Later, the fatigue test is conducted and results show that the hysteretic curve tends to be fuller due to the increase in plastic strain when the exposure temperature ranges from 700 to 900 °C. Based on the test results, effects of exposure temperature and strain amplitude on cycles to failure and total dissipated energy density are analyzed. Besides, stress and strain coefficients are selected to analyze the stress and strain properties of post–fire Q690 HSS under low–cycle fatigue loading. Finally, a fatigue model is proposed to quantify the relation between total strain amplitude and cycles to failure, where the coefficient β and exponent a of Q690 HSS exposed to different elevated temperatures are determined by test results, after which the predictive equations are suggested to the quantify effects of exposure temperature on β and a.

Abstract:The aim of the present paper is to identify the effects of sampling locations and loading waveforms on high-temperature low-cycle fatigue (HTLCF) and creep-fatigue life of a forged and precipitation hardened nickel-based GH4169 superalloy. Both the deformation and failure mechanisms are considered here. It has been revealed that HTLCF and creep-fatigue life of specimens were influenced by inhomogeneous microstructures at different locations. Compared with the HTLCF tests, the presence of dwell times in creep-fatigue tests tended to reduce number of cycles to failure. Intergranular damage was observed at both crack initiation and propagation stages. For the dwell times under tension, the intergranular damage was mainly associated with precipitate-assist voids. However, oxidation accounted for the presence of intergranular damage for the dwell times under compression.

Abstract:This study investigates the microstructural evolution and its effect on the fatigue performance of a novel nickel-based powder superalloy FGH4113A (WZ-A3) after long-term aging at 760 °C and 815 °C. The results show that long-term aging both at 760 °C and 815 °C has no significant effect on the grain size and morphology of the alloy. After aging at 760 °C for up to 2020 h, the size of the γ′ phase remains unchanged, and its morphology transitions from nearly square to nearly spherical. During long-term aging at 815 °C for 440 h, γ′ phase coarsening and spheroidizing occur simultaneously. With prolonged aging time, the size and spheroidization degree of the γ′ phase further increase. During long-term aging up to 440 h at 760 °C, the dispersed granular MC and M6C carbides dissolve and re-precipitate. By 2020 h of aging, flocculent carbides precipitate and non-continuous M6C and M23C6 accumulate at grain boundaries. After long-term aging at 815 °C for 440 h, flocculent carbides begin to precipitate within the grains. By 2020 h of aging, a large amount of flocculent carbides precipitate with significant coarsening and enrichment of the grain boundary carbides. Due to the insignificant coarsening of the γ′ phase as well as the enrichment and precipitation of the grain boundary carbides, the fatigue performance of the alloy decreases slightly after long-term aging.
