Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials are crystalline materials made of a single or a few layers of atoms. They have been an active research subject in recent years because of their unique physical and chemical properties. In particular, 2D materials such as graphene, hexagonal BN, and MoS2 exhibit some of the lowest friction coefficients and wear rates, making them attractive for enhancing the efficiency, durability, and environmental compatibility of future mechanical systems. This review will focus on recent advances in the tribology of 2D materials. Starting from general physical characteristics, the essential friction and wear behavior of 2D materials together with the associated mechanisms are reviewed for both interlayer and surface sliding. Influences of the atomic structures of the slip interfaces and environmental factors are discussed, with special attention given to various strategies for achieving friction modulation and superlubricity. Finally, the emerging engineering applications of 2D materials, as well as future prospects, are summarized.

Abstract:Nanomanufacturing is a new area brought up in recent years, which is defined by NSF (The National Science Foundation, USA) as encompassing all processes aimed toward building of nanoscale (in ID, 2D, or 3D) structures, features, devices, and systems suitable for integration across higher dimensional scales (micro-, meso- and macroscale) to provide functional products and useful services. Nanomanufacturing includes both bottom-up and top-down processes. Tribology becomes very important in nanomanufacturing, particularly in process of chemical mechanical material removal, contact printing, assembly and joining, scanning probe lithography etc. In the present paper, the characteristic of liquids in a nano-gap, the collision, adsorption, and desorption of nano-particles with a solid surface, and the surface modification in nanofacturing have been discussed.

Abstract:From our ordinary lives to various mechanical systems, friction and wear are often unavoidable phenomena that are heavily responsible for excessive expenditures of nonrenewable energy, the damages and failures of system movement components, as well as immense economic losses. Thus, achieving low friction and high anti-wear performance is critical for minimization of these adverse factors. Two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials, including transition metal dichalcogenides, single elements, transition metal carbides, nitrides and carbonitrides, hexagonal boron nitride, and metal-organic frameworks have attracted remarkable interests in friction and wear reduction of various applications, owing to their atomic-thin planar morphologies and tribological potential. In this paper, we systematically review the current tribological progress on 2D nanomaterials when used as lubricant additives, reinforcement phases in the coatings and bulk materials, or a major component of superlubricity system. Additionally, the conclusions and prospects on 2D nanomaterials with the existing drawbacks, challenges and future direction in such tribological fields are briefly provided. Finally, we sincerely hope such a review will offer valuable lights for 2D nanomaterial-related researches dedicated on tribology in the future.

Exploring the Effect of Nanoparticle Size on the Tribological Properties of Sio2 / Polyalkylene Glycol Nanofluid under Different Lubrication Conditions

Abstract:The influence of nanoparticle size on the tribological performances of the SiO2/PAG (Polyalkylene glycol) nanofluids under different lubricating condition were investigated. The silica nanoparticles displayed strong size-oriented adaptability to the lubricating conditions. Under lower frequency, the smaller nano-SiO2 could significantly improve the tribological performances, this is due to the formation of tribofilm with stronger intrinsic mechanical properties. However, the lubricating oil containing large nano-SiO2 showed better friction reducing property under higher frequency, it because the flow features of nanofluids has become a dominating factor affecting the tribological performance. What's more, compared with the nano-additives with the uniform size, the mixed nano-additives displayed better anti-wear and friction-reducing properties.

Abstract:The study of friction and wear of different materials have gained increased attention due to their influence in the component lifetime and on the energy efficiency of the systems. In order to optimize tribological properties in different applications, from gears to medical implants, the use of 2D materials into polymer matrices has attracted interest due to their intrinsic properties, including high mechanical properties, high surface area and even superlubricity features. Graphene and its derivatives, Transitional Metal Dicalcogenides (TMDs), Boron Nitride (BN), and, more recently, MXenes, stand out as the most researched 2D nanomaterials used for polymer nanocomposites. This review aims to describe experimental and computational researches of these 2D polymer nanocomposites regarding tribological properties and applications, evidencing the main mechanisms involved on their enhanced anti-friction performances. Furthermore, an overview and the remaining issues in the area are highlighted, which may serve as a reference for future studies.

Abstract:Tribology has been well developed in the last 20 years since the development of nanotechnology and the increasing needs of the social progression.Several new areas have been brought out,such as nano-tribology,bio-tribology,superlubricity,surface texture.In the following 10 years,these new areas as well as other new emerging concepts,e.g.nano-tribology,green-tribology,bio-tribology,superlubricity,tribology in nanomanufacturing,superlubricity materials,tribology in extreme hard condition,surface texture related theory and technique,and tribology in new energy field,will play important roles in the tribological research works.Nano-tribology includes thin film lubrication (TFL) at nano-scale,nano-friction,nano-wear,surface adhesion,and so on.Green-tribology includes the environment-friendly lubricants,reduction of tribo-noise,anti-environmental pollution from wear contamination.Bio-tribology includes the tribology in organs of human being and the bionic tribology.Superlubricity includes different kinds of lubricants such as diamond like carbon (DLC) film,water based lubricant,some of bio-lubricants,which has an ultra-low friction coefficient down to the level of 0.001.How to push such ultra-low friction lubricants into application is still a big problem because they still have some disadvantages to be overcome.Tribology in nanomanufacturing includes the tribology in the manufacturing of nanoscale structure,the manufacturing with nano-precision,and the integration across higher dimensional scales (micro-,meso-and macroscale).In such area,different theories and techniques are needed to fit different objects.Tribology in extreme hard condition including the tribology under a heavy load,at a high/low temperature,at a very high/low speed,etc.,and surface texture related tribological theory and techniques also develop quite fast in recent years.The new advancements in recent years and the future needs in the following 10 years of these areas have been introduced.

Abstract:The recent development in the four areas of nano-tribology is analysed. They are micro-and nano-friction and wear, micro- and nano-tribological engineering. The research methods in nano-tribology and thin film lubrication in which five branches are included: equivalent viscusity and flowing characteristics of micro fluid, the transition between ordered molecular film and disordered one, the essence of matrix influence on thin film lubrication, the lubrication mechanism of high polymer lubricants and the problem of superlubricity. Meanwhile, more than 35 problems are proposed which should be solved in the future.

Abstract:Abstract Two-dimensional (2D) materials with a layered structure are excellent candidates in the field of lubrication due to their unique physical and chemical properties, including weak interlayer interaction and large specific surface area. For the last few decades, graphene has received lots of attention due to its excellent properties. Besides graphene, various new 2D materials (including MoS 2 , WS 2 , WSe 2 , NbSe 2 , NbTe 2 , ReS 2 , TaS 2 and h-BN etc.) are found to exhibit a low coefficient of friction at the macro- and even micro-scales, which may lead to widespread application in the field of lubrication and anti-wear. This article focuses on the latest development trend in 2D materials in the field of tribology. The review begins with a summary of widely accepted nano-scale friction mechanisms contain surface friction mechanism and interlayer friction mechanism. The following sections report the applications of 2D materials in lubrication and anti-wear as lubricant additives, solid lubricants, and composite lubricating materials. Finally, the research prospects of 2D materials in tribology are presented.

Abstract:Micro-tribology, also known as nano-tribology or molecular tribology, studies the behavior and damage of the friction interface at the molecular scale. The main experimental instrument of micro-tribology is the scanning probe microscope, which includes the atomic force microscopy (AFM) and the friction force microscope (FFM). This chapter introduces micro-friction, micro-contact, micro-adhesion and micro-wear phenomena. The friction mechanism of the molecular lubricating film has been studied from the physical properties of the molecular film and energy conversion. The dynamic shear property of the lubricant film, that is, the rheological property, is very important to engineering design. Organized molecular film is when one or more molecular layers cover the solid surface to arrange an organized and compact film. At present, organized molecular films are mainly Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) film and self-assembled membrane (self-assembled monolayer (SAM)). The chapter also introduces their structure, preparations and applications.

Abstract:With the development of nano science and technol- ogy,nanotribology has been a fundamental technology involved in super precise machine and micro electromechanical systems, which focus on the atom/molecule-scale friction,lubrication and wear properties of tribological interfaces.Since early 1990s, Chinese tribologists have devoted themselves into this field and made remarkable achievements.The main research progress on nanotribology from the State Key Laboratory of Tribology, Tsinghua University is summarized,including thin film lubrica- tion,confined liquid properties,ordered molecular film lubrica- tion,interface friction and stick-slip phenomena,magnetic head/disk nanotribology and the development of experimental instruments,etc.To serve as a valuable reference for future study is expected in nanotribology.

Abstract:>The solidification and interfacial slip in nanometer-scale lubricating films as well as the contact and adhesion of metal crystals have been studied via molecular dynamics simulations. Results show that the critical pressure for the solid-liquid transition declines as the film thickness decreases, in-dicating that the lubricant in the thin films may exist in a solid-like state. It is also found that the interfa-cial slip may occur in thin films at relatively low shear rate, and there is a good correlation between the slip phenomenon and the lubricant solidification. The simulations reveal that a micro-scale adhesion may take place due to the atomic jump during the process of approaching or separating of two smooth crystal surfaces, which provides important information for understanding the origin of interfacial friction.

Abstract:Over the past two decades, carbon nanomaterials have attracted great interest for their confirmed friction and wear performances as well as important tribological applications. This article gives a comprehensive review of the recent developments of four typical carbon nanomaterials including fullerenes, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), graphene and nanodiamonds in tribology. Firstly, the applications of the four types of carbon nanomaterials in coatings for anti-wear enhancement and friction reduction are discussed. Secondly, the improvement of tribological behaviors for bulk materials by using CNTs, graphene and nanodiamonds as additives is reviewed. Thirdly, the discussion is conducted on the mechanisms of the fullerenes, CNTs, graphene and nanodiamonds acting as additives in lubricants to achieve friction and wear reduction. Fourthly, the progress on superlubricity using CNTs and graphene is highlighted. Finally, this review concludes with an outlook of the future studies on carbon nanomaterials in tribology, their key challenges for commercial applications, and possible solutions.

It is emphasized that to understand the basic laws governing the complex behavior. the investigations have to be carried out on the fundamental level where surface science would play an important role. Especially, the mechanism of theology transition, the origin of friction and the mystery of adhesion have to be traced back to the molecular origins. However, the continuum-based theories. if modified based on the achievements of molecular tribology, are expected to be still a convenient way to model the thin film lubrication. friction and adhesion.
A Study on Mechanism of Tribological Behavior of Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract:This paper investigates mechanism of tribological behavior of carbon nanotubes by using universal tribometer-II and molecular dynamics simulations. The experiment results indicate that multi-walled carbon nanotubes film with mixed acid treatment has better surface quality and less impurities but higher friction than pristine carbon nanotubes film. The reason is that mixed acid treatment introduces carboxyl group and more defects which increases dangling bonds of carbon nanotubes. Breaking of dangling bonds increases friction force when sliding and shearing occurs. Molecular dynamics simulation of shearing between silicon surfaces and single-walled carbon nanotube bundles without defect shows low lateral forces because only van der walls force exists between silicon surfaces and carbon nanotubes owing to no dangling bonds. The result is consistent to the conclusion inferred from experiment. Therefore excellent performance is expected when carbon nanotubes treated with little defects are used as lubricant or addictives.

Abstract:Nano-crystalline diamond has been extensively researched and applied in the fields of tribology, optics, quantum information and biomedicine. In virtue of its hardness, the highest in natural materials, diamond outperforms the other materials in terms of wear resistance. Compared to traditional single-crystalline and poly-crystalline diamonds, nano-crystalline diamond consists of disordered grains and thus possesses good toughness and self-sharpening. These merits render nano-crystalline diamonds to have great potential in tribology. Moreover, the re-nucleation of nano-crystalline diamond during preparation is beneficial to decreasing surface roughness due to its ultrafine grain size. Nano-crystalline diamond coatings can have a friction coefficient as low as single-crystal diamonds. This article briefly introduces the approaches to preparing nano-crystalline diamond materials and summarizes their applications in the field of tribology. Firstly, nano-crystalline diamond powders can be used as additives in both oil- and water-based lubricants to significantly enhance their anti-wear property. Nano-crystalline diamond coatings can also act as self-lubricating films when they are deposited on different substrates, exhibiting excellent performance in friction reduction and wear resistance. In addition, the research works related to the tribological applications of nano-crystalline diamond composites have also been reviewed in this paper.

Abstract:A review was given on the development of micro- and nano-manufacturing technology and its challenges to tribology. It was pointed out that with the ceaseless development of high technologies of spaceflight, information, instruments, and military equipment towards micromation and high-precision, micro- and nano-manufacturing technology has been increasingly focused on. With the size of device decreasing from millimeter scale to micrometer scale or even nanometer scale, surface forces become a dominant role. In this case the conventional rules and control methods for the surface and interface behaviors of micro-sized devices could be invalid. It is imperative to find new theories and methodologies to deal with the surface and tribological problems concerning the micro- and nano-scale devices, including friction, wear, lubrication behavior, and mechanical and chemical properties. Moreover, it was suggested that many of the vital technologies in the micro- and nano-manufacturing would be related to nanoscale wear, nanogap lubrication, manufacture and modification of low-energy surfaces, friction and adhesion between the interfaces, active control of friction, and ultra-lubrication. It was anticipated that solving those problems would contribute greatly to speed up the development of micro- and nano-manufacturing technology.

Abstract:Achieving macroscale structural superlubricity with two-dimensional (2D) materials under ultrahigh contact pressure in ambient condition is particularly challenging. Furthermore, the mechanisms underlying the disparate trans-scale tribological behaviors of 2D materials continue to be a subject of debate. Here, we propose a novel principle concerning pressure-induced dynamic structural evolution and tribochemical behaviors of tribolayers to broaden the macroscale structural superlubricity. For the first time, robust macroscale structural superlubricity with ultralow wear rate is realized by 2D material coating in ambient condition by sliding steel counterparts under ultrahigh contact pressure. The results reveal that macroscale structural superlubricity of 2D materials is highly dependent on the dynamic evolution of tribolayers nanostructures, as well as the adsorption and tribochemical behaviors governed by extreme pressure. These findings shed light on achieving robust macroscale structural superlubricity with 2D materials for harsh engineering conditions.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials are promising in reducing friction-induced energy loss and wear in automotive and electronics industries because of their superior tribological performance. As a kind of organic 2D materials, the structure and functionality of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are much easier to tailor compared to other inorganic 2D materials, which expand their potential application in a Micro-Electro-Mechanical System (MEMS). In this manuscript, several kinds of COFs are synthesized and characterized on the surface of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) to investigate the nanotribological mechanism of organic 2D materials. It is surprisingly revealed that the friction coefficients of surface COFs are positively correlated with the pore sizes of honeycomb networks. The COFs with smaller pores would have a smoother potential energy surface and exhibit a lower friction coefficient. Besides, the porous structures of surface COFs make them good candidates to be host templates. The host-guest assembly structures are successfully constructed after introducing coronene molecules, and these host-guest systems display higher friction coefficients because the assembly structure of the guest molecules would be perturbed during the friction process and bring additional slip energy barriers, but the capacity of COFs to form composite assembly with functional guest molecules greatly promotes their further application in the MEMS.

Abstract:Abstract In recent years, attempts to improve the mechanical properties of composites have increased remarkably owing to the inadequate utilization of matrices in demanding technological systems where efficiency, durability, and environmental compatibility are the key requirements. The search for novel materials that can potentially have enhanced mechanical properties continues. Recent studies have demonstrated that two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials can act as excellent reinforcements because they possess high modulus of elasticity, high strength, and ultralow friction. By incorporating 2D nanomaterials in a composite, 2D nanomaterial-based composites (2DNBCs) have been developed. In view of this, a critical review of recent mechanical and tribological studies based on 2DNBCs has been undertaken. Matrices such as polymers, ceramics, and metals, as well as most of the representative 2D nanomaterial reinforcements such as graphene, boron nitride (BN), molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), and transition metal carbides and nitrides (MXenes) have been included in this review. Their preparation strategies, intrinsic mechanical properties, friction and lubrication performances, strengthening mechanisms, influencing factors, and potential applications have been comprehensively discussed. A brief summary and prospects are given in the final part, which would be useful in designing and fabricating advanced 2D nanocomposites in the future.

Abstract:Two-dimensional materials having a layered structure comprise a monolayer or multilayers of atomic thickness and ultra-low shear strength. Their high specific surface area, in-plane strength, weak layer-layer interaction, and surface chemical stability result in remarkably low friction and wear-resisting properties. Thus, 2D materials have attracted considerable attention. In recent years, great advances have been made in the scientific research and industrial applications of anti-friction, anti-wear, and lubrication of 2D materials. In this article, the basic nanoscale friction mechanisms of 2D materials including interfacial friction and surface friction mechanisms are summarized. This paper also includes a review of reports on lubrication mechanisms based on the film-formation, self-healing, and ball bearing mechanisms and applications based on lubricant additives, nanoscale lubricating films, and space lubrication materials of 2D materials in detail. Finally, the challenges and potential applications of 2D materials in the field of lubrication were also presented.
