In the meantime, due to the fast speed and a lack of the interaction with the environment, photons are now regarded as a promising platform for the emerging quantum information processing (QIP) studies. Therefore, there is a growing number of works on quantum computing, quantum communication, and quantum metrology that are solidly based on the techniques of quantum photonics. Abstract:Nanophotonics has emerged as a cutting-edge interdisciplinary research field today. Its primary objective is to leverage the interaction between light and matter at the wavelength and sub-wavelength scales, with the purpose of designing and manufacturing miniaturized, multifunctional, and high-performance optical devices and systems. Professor Cheng Zhang from Huazhong University of Science and Technology has dedicated his career to nanophotonic device research. His work encompasses a wide range of areas, including plasmonic devices, optical metamaterials, and metasurfaces. Through the design of innovative artificial electromagnetic structures and the exploration of emerging nanofabrication techniques, Professor Cheng Zhang has effectively achieved versatile control over various properties of electromagnetic waves, including amplitude, phase, and polarization states. Furthermore, his research extends to the continuous exploration of novel optical phenomena, aimed at realizing high-performance engineering applications. Abstract:Integrated photonics means integrating multiple photonic functions on a single Photonic Integrated Chip (PIC). Empowered by various nanofabrication techniques on diverse innovative material platforms, remarkable advances have been made in integrated photonics in the last decade. Light: Advanced Manufacturing (LAM) is a new, highly selective, open-access, and free of charge international sister journal of the Nature Journal Light: Science & Applications (Light). LAM aims to publish original innovative research papers and timely, state-of-the-art reviews in all modern areas of preferred light-based manufacturing, including fundamental and applied research as well as industrial innovations. LAM is organizing a special issue on integrated photonics, in order to capture the most exciting cutting edge advances in integrated photonics, including new material platforms, new fabrication and characterization technologies, new device architectures, new design principle of miniaturized components, nanophotonic devices, and their potential applications. We are very honored to feature Prof. Baohua Jia, the lead guest editor of this special issue, as this issue's Light People. She is the Director of Center for Atomaterial Sciences and Technologies at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) University and a top-level Future Fellow funded by the Australian Research Council. Her research focuses on fundamental light and nanomaterial interaction. In particular, her work on laser manipulation of two-dimensional materials has led to the design and fabrication of functional nanostructures and nanomaterials for effective harnessing and storage of clean energy from sunlight, purifying water and air for clean environment and imaging and spectroscopy and nanofabrication using ultrafast laser towards fast-speed all-optical communications and intelligent manufacturing. She is an elected Fellow of Optica (formally known as OSA) and an elected Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals, and Mining. Abstract:Abstract Photon sciences and technologies establish the building blocks for myriad scientific and engineering frontiers in life and energy sciences. Because of their overarching functionality, the developmental roadmap and opportunities underpinned by photonics are often semiotically mediated by the delineation of subject areas of application. In this perspective article, we map current and emerging linkages between three intersecting areas of research stewarded by advanced photonics technologies, namely light by design, outlined as (a) quantum and structured photonics, (b) light–matter interactions in accelerators and accelerator-based light sources, and (c) ultrafast sciences and quantum molecular dynamics. In each section, we will concentrate on state-of-the-art achievements and present prospective applications in life sciences, biochemistry, quantum optics and information sciences, and environmental and chemical engineering, all founded on a broad range of photon sources and methodologies. We hope that this interconnected mapping of challenges and opportunities seeds new concepts, theory, and experiments in the advancement of ultrafast photon sciences and light–matter interactions. Through this mapping, we hope to inspire a critically interdisciplinary approach to the science and applications of light by design.

Abstract:EDITORIAL: "Mind-controlled information transmission" is one of human's ultimate fantasies for the development of science and technology. On June 11, 2022, eLight Journal simultaneously published two research papers on brainwave-based metasurfaces, and proposed a new concept of metasurface controlled by mind for the first time in the world. This major scientific breakthrough rushed up to the hot search list of public media. It was read more than ten million times, and the related video has been played 600,000 times, which aroused the audience's strong interest and discussion, and really made a significant leap toward "mind control". We are greatly honored to invite Prof. Cheng-Wei Qiu from National University of Singapore, the corresponding author of both above-mentioned articles and the co-Editor-in-Chief of eLight Journal, to have an exclusive interview. Prof. Cheng-Wei Qiu showed us the profound interpretation of his research works and shared his unique insights on journal development and talent cultivation.

Abstract:Editorial Prof. Eric Mazur is a great influencer over and beyond the optics community. As a physicist, he is a pioneer of ultrafast optics and was one of the inventors of colliding-pulse mode-locked laser. As an educator, he not only gave talks to thousands, but also revolutionized teaching with his globally renowned methodology “Peer Instruction”. As a leader and entrepreneur, he co-founded several companies and was President of Optica (formerly the Optical Society) and currently is the Chair of the Optica Foundation. Quantum imaging with sub-Poissonian light: challenges and perspectives in optical metrology

Abstract:Non-classical correlations in optical beams offer an unprecedented opportunity for surpassing the conventional limits of sensitivity and resolution in optical measurements and imaging, especially, but not only, when low photon flux, down to the single photon, is measured. We review the principles of quantum imaging and sensing techniques that exploit sub-Poissonian photon statistics and non-classical photon number correlation, presenting some state-of-the-art achievements in the field. These quantum photonics protocols have the potential to trigger major steps in many applications, such as microscopy and biophotonics, and represent an important opportunity for a new deal in radiometry and photometry.

From West to East: Professor Pavlos Savvidis' Quest for Light

Abstract:As early as about 2400 years ago, Mozi (original name Mo Di, Latinized as Micius), an ancient Chinese scientist, proposed the theory of pinhole imaging that demonstrates the fundamental principle of light behavior. About 700 years ago, Marco Polo, an Italian explorer, traveled to China along the Silk Road, marveled at the economic prosperity and the advanced technology of Hangzhou City in China, and described Hangzhou as "the most beautiful and splendid city in the world". About 5 years ago, with the support of the China-proposed Belt-and-Road Initiative, it was in Hangzhou City that Professor Pavlos Savvidis, an Armenian-born Greek physicist, chose to work with more of his Chinese counterparts and took on the challenge of building a new research laboratory on quantum optoelectronics. He used to study and work in the UK, the USA, and Greece, but now in New China's first new type of research university supported by the society—Westlake University. Traveling from West to East, traversing from one civilization to another, Professor Pavlos Savvidis delves into his unwavering quest for light in this issue of "Light People", and discusses his tireless pursuit of excellence in the field of optoelectronics, which has garnered him widespread citation, recognition, and contribution to the global scientific community.
