Abstract:Micro-and nano-photonics are advanced research topics of the 21st century right in the center of attention of the world's major developed countries, and will have significant and far-reaching impact on the future high-tech, national security, green energy and other areas. In recent years, the United States, European Union and other developed countries and regions have set up many major research plans for Micro and nano-photonics. Chinese scientists have also called on the government to establish relevant research programs to strengthen and improve the micro-and nano-photonics research in Chi-na.Micro-and nano-photonics combine the advanced research results of photonics and nano-technology, and is an indispensable science and technology discipline of the 21st century.Chinese scientists have achieved sig-nificant amounts of world-class research results in this field.In order to further investigate the impact of funda-mental theories and related key applications of Micro-and nano-photonics on the national economy in terms of advanced manufacturing and strategic resources, the Departments of Information Sciences, Mathematical and Physical Sciences, Engineering Material Sciences, and the Policy Bureau of National Natural Science Founda-tion of China ( NSFC ) co-sponsored the 115 “Shuan-gqing forum”on“Micro-and nano-photonics”.38 scien-tists from 26 institutes and universities participate in this forum. Through in-depth discussions, the scientists summarized the key scientific problems in this field and explored the forefront research topics and funding strate-gy.A review on the forums is published in this special issue.

Abstract:Since 2001 and the first demonstrations of the feasibility of generating and measuring attosecond light pulses, attosecond science has developed into a very active and quickly evolving research field. Its ultimate goal is the real-time tracking of electron dynamics in all forms of matter, ranging from atoms and large molecules to the condensed phase and plasmas. The accomplishment of this goal has required and still calls for developments in ultrafast laser technology, ultrafast metrology, extreme ultra-violet (XUV) optics, pump–probe measurement schemes and non-linear laser-matter interaction. Moreover, the interpretation of the experimental results in attosecond experiments has stimulated and guided major developments in theoretical descriptions of ultrafast electronic processes in matter. Motivated by these two decades of development, several large-scale facilities, including extreme light infrastructure—attosecond light pulse source (ELI-ALPS) and several free electron laser facilities (the linac coherent light source (LCLS) at Stanford and the European XFEL in Hamburg) are now pushing the development of a new generation of attosecond sources. This considerable technological effort opens new and important perspectives in the field of ultrafast science with potential applications in photochemistry, photobiology and advanced electronics. In this context, the joint focus issue on Attosecond technology(/ies) and science of J. Phys. Photon. and J. Phys. B: At. Mol. Opt. Phys. aims to provide an overview of the state-of-the-art in attosecond science, from the basic science involved in the generation and in applications of attosecond pulses to the technologies that are required.

Abstract:Abstract Photon sciences and technologies establish the building blocks for myriad scientific and engineering frontiers in life and energy sciences. Because of their overarching functionality, the developmental roadmap and opportunities underpinned by photonics are often semiotically mediated by the delineation of subject areas of application. In this perspective article, we map current and emerging linkages between three intersecting areas of research stewarded by advanced photonics technologies, namely light by design, outlined as (a) quantum and structured photonics, (b) light–matter interactions in accelerators and accelerator-based light sources, and (c) ultrafast sciences and quantum molecular dynamics. In each section, we will concentrate on state-of-the-art achievements and present prospective applications in life sciences, biochemistry, quantum optics and information sciences, and environmental and chemical engineering, all founded on a broad range of photon sources and methodologies. We hope that this interconnected mapping of challenges and opportunities seeds new concepts, theory, and experiments in the advancement of ultrafast photon sciences and light–matter interactions. Through this mapping, we hope to inspire a critically interdisciplinary approach to the science and applications of light by design.

Abstract:The tremendous demand on low cost optoelectronic systems that may be used for high-density data communications, real time sensing/detection and high-speed control/actuation has heated up the research and development in silicon photonics, which studies the principles and technologies of merging electronics and photonics into the silicon platform. To make a silicon photonic system reality, the compatibility in device size and integration processing between the photonics and electronics is essential. Over the past years, unprecedented advancement on individual silicon photonic devices, such as waveguide, beam splitter, light source, modulator, and detector, have been reported, yet the progress in size and processing issues are still under development. To overcome the size incompatibility of the photonic devices and the electronic devices, the localization characters of the plasmonics and photonic crystal, and the high efficient smaller devices are brought into the play. On the other hand, the efforts in producing better coupling devices, better matched material systems are increased for tight integration of photonics and electronics. It is our intention to bring the research community’s attention to these particular research areas. In this ‘Special Issue on Silicon Photonics’, 5 review articles and 11 research articles focusing on relevant subjects by internationally active groups in the field are specially presented. More specifically, Prof. Ran of Peking University reviewed the transition from photonics to plasmonics from the point of view of the on-chip light source; Prof. Sun of Nankai University talked about the highly efficient silicon light emitting diodes through doping engineering; Prof. Xia of Huazhong University of Science and Technology presented his view on germanium quantum dots light-emitting devices; Dr. Li’s group in the Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), presented their progresses on infrared two-dimensional silicon photonic crystal slab devices; and Dr. Cheng’s group in the Institute of Semiconductor, CAS, summarized the recent development in photonic devices application of Ge-on-Si. Among the research articles, Prof. Zhou’s group and Prof. Huang’s group showed their results on surface plasmon involved emissions. The following papers are aimed to improve the device performance and efficiency: Prof. Zhang’s group and Dr. Yang’s group targeted better and smaller waveguides; Prof. Zhou’s group researched the binary blazed grating-based polarization-independent filter on silicon on insulator (SOI); Dr. Hou’s group and Dr. Li’s group reported their results on modulators by using quantum-confined Stark effect (QCSE) and Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI). From materials, integration, and system performance point of view, Prof. Su’s group showed a compact all-optical differential-equation solver based on silicon microring resonator; Dr. Huang’s group spelled their vision on design of unidirectional emission silicon/ III-V laser for on-chip interconnects; Prof. Xu’s group and Dr. Huo’s group researched on the annealing effect on the optical and electronic properties of non-stoichiometric amorphous silicon carbide films and the molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) growth of tensile-strained Ge quantum wells and quantum dots to obtain best conditions for on-chip hetero structured light sources. Overall, articles in this special issue showcase the exciting achievements of silicon photonics, particularly in the interests of better devices and better integration. We hope the readers will find them inspiring and enjoyable. Finally, we would like to express our appreciations to authors for devoting their precious time to write the intriguing articles and to reviewers for their helpful comments.
