Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a scalable photonic reservoir computing system based on pulse propagation in parallel passive dispersive links. The approach features a simple structure and is composed of passive components, such as dispersive elements and ring resonators. The system utilizes a pulsed laser and employs a multi-channel architecture with dispersive elements for pulse broadening and ring resonators for delay stacking. It is verified for its capability to handle both digital tasks (2-bit Boolean logic operations, header recognition) and analog tasks (Mackey-Glass time-series prediction, Lorenz 63 time-series prediction). A major advantage of the approach lies in its scalability.It has been confirmed that more complex tasks can be processed by using a system with more channels, along with dispersive elements and ring resonators with larger dispersion amounts and delays, respectively. Abstract:The twenty-eight papers included in this special section focuses on optical computing. There is a renaissance in the research of photonic computing driven by the demands of artificial intelligence and neuromorphic computing on current digital electronic hardware (which has a central processor and separated memory for sequential processing). Optical physics could enable non-von Neumann computing and potentially enable new applications that require low latency, high bandwidth, and low energies. This special issue will cover the current status, prospects, and challenges of the field in using light for neuromorphic computing, machine learning, and quantum information processing. The purpose of this special section is to provide a glimpse of the current status and future trends, as well as provide original results and recent developments in the field of optical computing, from devices, integration technology, system architectures, and algorithms, to applications.

Abstract:Optical wireless communication (OWC) systems provide many advantages over radio frequency (RF) wireless technologies in some scenarios, including significantly higher data rates and a large amount of available license-free frequency spectrum. Recently, OWC has also been proposed in fifth generation 5G standard as a tool to augment capacity due to RF spectrum crunching challenges. Various forms of OWC can be used to augment RF capacity at both access and backhaul/fronthaul levels. Despite the major advantages and various application areas, the widespread deployment of OWC is delayed by several challenges, such as the demand to maintain strict line-of-sight alignment between transmitter and receiver in long range outdoor applications; the need to combat attenuation due to adverse weather conditions such as fog, cloud, and turbulence; to modulate light emitting diodes at high frequencies without distortion at indoor visible light communication (VLC) applications and retaining power levels within the eye safety limits for laser transmitters and comfortable illumination levels for LED transmitters.

Abstract:Collocated data processing and storage are the norm in biological systems. Indeed, the von Neumann computing architecture, that physically and temporally separates processing and memory, was born more of pragmatism based on available technology. As our ability to create better hardware improves, new computational paradigms are being explored. Integrated photonic circuits are regarded as an attractive solution for on-chip computing using only light, leveraging the increased speed and bandwidth potential of working in the optical domain, and importantly, removing the need for time and energy sapping electro-optical conversions. Here we show that we can combine the emerging area of integrated optics with collocated data storage and processing to enable all-photonic in-memory computations. By employing non-volatile photonic elements based on the phase-change material, Ge2Sb2Te5, we are able to achieve direct scalar multiplication on single devices. Featuring a novel single-shot Write/Erase and a drift-free process, such elements can multiply two scalar numbers by mapping their values to the energy of an input pulse and to the transmittance of the device, codified in the crystallographic state of the element. The output pulse, carrying the information of the light-matter interaction, is the result of the computation. Our all-optical approach is novel, easy to fabricate and operate, and sets the stage for development of entirely photonic computers.

Abstract:The articles in this special section focus on optical interconnects. These papers present the most recent developments in this field with extensiveness and depth, while ensuring the inclusion of the highest quality work. Large-scale data centers and high-performance computers (HPC) are becoming increasingly limited by the capacity of interconnects due to the rapidly increasing power consumption and bandwidth demands. As a result of the continuing bandwidth scaling, optical interconnects (OI) have been implemented at ever decreasing communication distances to replace electrical interconnects. Over the past decade, core switches and routers in data centers and HPC systems have adopted fiber optics to deliver the I/O performance between racks in multi-chassis configurations. Meanwhile, the further penetration of OI into shorter distances, such as the board and chip levels, poses new challenges on photonic integrated circuits (PICs) for continued performance and cost scaling and further requires innovations in integration and packaging.

Abstract:In recent years, quantum computing has made significant strides, particularly in light-based technology. The introduction of quantum photonic chips has ushered in an era marked by scalability, stability, and cost-effectiveness, paving the way for innovative possibilities within compact footprints. This article provides a comprehensive exploration of photonic quantum computing, covering key aspects such as encoding information in photons, the merits of photonic qubits, and essential photonic device components including light squeezers, quantum light sources, interferometers, photodetectors, and waveguides. The article also examines photonic quantum communication and internet, and its implications for secure systems, detailing implementations such as quantum key distribution and long-distance communication. Emerging trends in quantum communication and essential reconfigurable elements for advancing photonic quantum internet are discussed. The review further navigates the path towards establishing scalable and fault-tolerant photonic quantum computers, highlighting quantum computational advantages achieved using photons. Additionally, the discussion extends to programmable photonic circuits, integrated photonics and transformative applications. Lastly, the review addresses prospects, implications, and challenges in photonic quantum computing, offering valuable insights into current advancements and promising future directions in this technology.

Abstract:In the context of a doomed end of the Moore's law, various new types of computing architectures have been emerging, aiming to meet the demands of intractable computation and artificial intelligence. Photonic computing is a competitive candidate, in light of the inherent properties of photons, including high propagation speed, strong robustness, and multiple degrees of freedom to encode information. Also, the progress of integrated photonics continues to provide novel possibilities, apart from boosting the scalability and stability of photonic computing architectures. Moreover, an introduction of quantum technology might open a new chapter for photonic computing, from the view of single photons. In this Perspective, we highlight the unique features and advances of integrated photonic platforms, whose roles in constructing a non-von Neumann computing architecture are also outlined. We show their potential in solving problems beyond the reach of traditional computers and in machine learning and further discuss the conceivable challenges and opportunities.

Abstract:Photonic quantum technologies represent a promising platform for several applications, ranging from long-distance communications to the simulation of complex phenomena. Indeed, the advantages offered by single photons do make them the candidate of choice for carrying quantum information in a broad variety of areas with a versatile approach. Furthermore, recent technological advances are now enabling first concrete applications of photonic quantum information processing. The goal of this manuscript is to provide the reader with a comprehensive review of the state of the art in this active field, with a due balance between theoretical, experimental and technological results. When more convenient, we will present significant achievements in tables or in schematic figures, in order to convey a global perspective of the several horizons that fall under the name of photonic quantum information.

Abstract:Here we show a photonic computing accelerator utilizing a system-level thin-film lithium niobate circuit which overcomes this limitation. Leveraging the strong electro-optic (Pockels) effect and the scalability of this platform, we demonstrate photonic computation at speeds up to 1.36 TOPS while consuming 0.057 pJ/OP. Our system features more than 100 thin-film lithium niobate high-performance components working synergistically, surpassing state-of-the-art systems on this platform. We further demonstrate binary-classification, handwritten-digit classification, and image classification with remarkable accuracy, showcasing our system's capability of executing real algorithms. Finally, we investigate the opportunities offered by combining our system with a hybrid-integrated distributed feedback laser source and a heterogeneous-integrated modified uni-traveling carrier photodiode. Our results illustrate the promise of thin-film lithium niobate as a computational platform, addressing current bottlenecks in both electronic and photonic computation. Its unique properties of high-performance electro-optic weight encoding and conversion, wafer-scale scalability, and compatibility with integrated lasers and detectors, position thin-film lithium niobate photonics as a valuable complement to silicon photonics, with extensions to applications in ultrafast and power-efficient signal processing and ranging.

Abstract:Photons for quantum technologies have been identified early on as a very good candidate for carrying quantum information encoded onto them, either by polarization encoding, time encoding or spatial encoding. Quantum cryptography, quantum communications, quantum networks in general and quantum computing are some of the applications targeted by what is now called quantum photonics. Nevertheless, it was pretty clear at an early stage that bulk optics for handling quantum states of light with photons would not be able to deliver what is needed for these technologies. More recently, single photons, entangled photons and quantum optics in general have been coupled to more integrated approaches coming from classical optics in order to meet the requirements of scalability, reliablility and efficiency for quantum technologies. In this article, we develop our recent advances in two different nanophotonic platforms for quantum photonics using elongated optical fibers and integrated glass waveguides made by the so-called ion-exchange technique. We also present our latest results on quantum nanoemitters that we plan to couple and incorporate with our photonics platforms. These nanoemitters are of two kinds: nanocrystals made of perovskites as well as silicon-vacancy defect centers in nanodiamonds. Some of their properties are developed in this work. We will then give the general steps necessary in order to couple these nanoemitters efficiently with our platforms in the near future.

Abstract:Photonic quantum computation refers to quantum computation that uses photons as the physical system for doing the quantum computation. Photons are ideal quantum systems because they operate at room temperature, and photonic technologies are relatively mature. The field is largely divided between discrete- and continuous-variable photonic quantum computation. In discrete-variable (DV) photonic quantum computation, quantum information is represented by one or more modal properties (e.g. polarization) that take on distinct values from a finite set. Quantum information is processed via operations on these modal properties and eventually measured using single photon detectors. In continuous-variable (CV) photonic quantum computation, quantum information is represented by properties of the electromagnetic field that take on any value in an interval (e.g. position). The electromagnetic field is transformed via Gaussian and non-Gaussian operations, and then detected via homodyne detection. Both CV and DV photonic quantum computation have been realized experimentally and they each have a unique set of challenges that need to be overcome to achieve scalable photonic universal quantum computation. This article is an introduction to photonic quantum computing, charting its development from the early days of linear optical quantum computing to recent developments in quantum machine learning.

Photonic computing to accelerate data processing in wireless communications

Abstract:Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems are considered as one of the leading technologies employed in the next generations of wireless communication networks (5G), which promise to provide higher spectral efficiency, lower latency, and more reliability. Due to the massive number of devices served by the base stations (BS) equipped with large antenna arrays, massive-MIMO systems need to perform high-dimensional signal processing in a considerably short amount of time. The computational complexity of such data processing, while satisfying the energy and latency requirements, is beyond the capabilities of the conventional widely-used digital electronics-based computing, i.e., Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) and Application-Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs). In this paper, the speed and lossless propagation of light is exploited to introduce a photonic computing approach that addresses the high computational complexity required by massive-MIMO systems. The proposed computing approach is based on photonic implementation of multiply and accumulate (MAC) operation achieved by broadcast-and-weight (B&W) architecture. The B&W protocol is limited to real and positive values to perform MAC operations. In this work, preprocessing steps are developed to enable the proposed photonic computing architecture to accept any arbitrary values as the input. This is a requirement for wireless communication systems that typically deal with complex values. Numerical analysis shows that the performance of the wireless communication system is not degraded by the proposed photonic computing architecture, while it provides significant improvements in time and energy efficiency for massive-MIMO systems as compared to the most powerful Graphics Processing Units (GPUs).
