Abstract:The geometry of the packing structure can affect the flow pattern and considerably influence the mass transfer efficiency between liquid film and gas phase. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the flow patterns and factors that determine the efficiency of mass transfer and heat transfer. In this study, different packing structures, namely, sinusoidal, triangular, and rectangular corrugated plates, are investigated. Computational fluid dynamic simulations based on the volume-of-fluid method are performed by using the open-source software OpenFOAM to study the liquid film flow over these corrugation plates. The free-surface area between the liquid and gas has been found to reach its maximum when the resonance phenomenon occurs. According to the simulation results the triangular corrugated plate has the largest free-surface area among the three types under the same conditions for a certain Reynolds number. The results also indicated that the pattern of film flow on the sinusoidal and triangular corrugated plates is similar; the rectangular type is not good as the other two types. It is useful to choose a suitable packing structure when considering the manufacturing process and cost The research results provide a theoretical basis for the study of heat and mass transfer used in industry applications.

Abstract:With saturated moist air as the simulated flue gas,the flow and heat transfer of saturated moist air-water in the simulated spray packing tower was experimentally studied.The results showed that with packing of different structures and material arranged the flow resistance decreased and heat transfer coefficient increased along with the increasing of inlet moist air temperature.And both the flow resistance and heat transfer coefficient decreased along with the increasing of circulating water flow flux and inlet moist air velocity.By contrast it was found that better surface wettability and larger thermal conductivity led to smaller flow resistance and better heat transfer characteristics.

Abstract:Corrugations on the packing surface affect the efficiency of mass transfer in packing column. The influences of corrugations on film flow characteristics were investigated by numerical and experimental methods in this paper aiming to investigate the influence of geometric configuration on the mass transfer efficiency. In the simulations, a multiphase solver in the open-source software OpenFOAM was used to track the free surface position with VOF method. To validate the simulations quantitatively, the velocity profiles in the liquid film fields in 2-D simulations are compared with the experimental results. The flow fields of three different types of packing structures, namely sinusoidal, triangular and rectangular corrugated plates, in the experiments correspond well with the simulation results. For the shape optimization design, the new structures of plates were proposed and the hydrodynamics of the new corrugations plates were analysed. The order of mass transfer results of different types of corrugated plates is arranged.
Air-side Heat Transfer Characteristics under Wet Conditions at Lower Ambient Pressure of Fin-and-tube Heat Exchanger

Abstract:Air-side heat transfer performance of plain fin-and-tube heat exchanger under fully wet conditions was experimentally investigated at different ambient air pressure. Test results were compared with three available correlations to examine their applicability in lower pressure. Tested samples had different row numbers of 2-4 and the experimental ambient pressure had a range of 40-100 kPa. The experimental data at atmospheric pressure is basically consistent with the correlations. Air-side j(h) factors increased by 16.51-40.19% as Re number decreased from 4000 to 1000, and balloon to 112.04-141.37% when Re number declined from 1000 to 200. The row number effect still exists at lower ambient pressure and only become more apparent. Available correlations fails to describe experiment data at lower ambient pressure, maximum average error soar from 15.90% to 137.41% when ambient pressure drop from 100 kPa to 40 kPa. By adding the environmental pressure correction factor to the Re number in correlation, the refined correlation can describe 90.43% of experimental data within +/- 20%, and have a mean deviation of 1.46%. Numerical Analysis of Air Flow Resistance and Heat Transfer Between Corrugated Plates with Channels of Varied Heights

Abstract:Air-water corrugated plate heaters function very differently from traditional tube-fin heaters.In this heater,the primary surface is the heat transfer surface,as the surface in contact with the heat transfer medium directly participates in heat transfer.This translates into higher heat transfer efficiency and compact surface area,which is very suitable for the compact heating elements used in air conditioners or air curtains.The air flow resistance and heat transfer performances varies with the height of the channels,and channels with different heights were simulated by the CFD software of FLUENT. The frictional coefficient and the Colburn factor were derived for air-water corrugated plate heaters,and the data indicates that the height of corrugation has significant effects on air flow resistance and heat transfer.The research results offer some useful references for optimal design of this category of heaters.

Abstract:Corrugated tubes are widely used in a range of applications for heat transfer enhancement. The spirally corrugated tube has a better heat transfer performance than the smooth tube. In this paper, the heat transfer performance of a hybrid smooth and six-start spirally corrugated tube is studied. With a validated numerical model, the effects of the corrugation part length on the vortex in the downstream smooth tube are studied for a range of high Reynolds numbers, where the existence of the corrugation part can turn out the secondary flow and enhance heat transfer. Meanwhile, it is found that in the smooth part, the fluid flow part with whirling can reach a maximum length, even if the length of the corrugation part continuously increases. Thus a series of critical corrugation lengths can be obtained. This work can reveal the enhanced heat transfer mechanism of the hybrid smooth and spirally corrugated tube and be of interest to researchers in heat transfer issues of corrugated tubes.

Abstract:Compact absorber is beneficial for bulk reduction and cost-saving of absorption systems. This paper presents an experimental study on the heat and mass transfer performance of a novel absorber which consists of an S-shaped capillary coils bundle. Experiments were carried out for a practical ammoniawater absorption system under practical working conditions. The effects of operating parameters such as degree of subcooling, concentration and mass flow rate of inlet solution, as well as absorption pressure, on absorption were investigated. Specifically, with the selected pressures of 300kPa, 400kPa and 500kPa and concentrations of inlet solution of 6.6%, 15.5% and 22.4%, we obtained the heat and mass transfer coefficients ranging from 622 similar to 1945 Wm(-2) K-1 and 5.1 similar to 34.3 x10(-6) ms(-1), respectively. The heat and mass transfer experimental data were processed in terms of the empirical correlations for the Nusselt and Sherwood numbers, respectively, and the correlations can fit all the experimental data with error bands of +/- 15%. Abstract:The pressure drop characteristic of wet air with ash particles in a horizontal tube bundle heat exchanger was studied experimentally. The variations with time, effects of water vapor mass fractions and mainstream velocities on pressure drop characteristic were presented. Experimentally results showed that with the increase in the time, the pressure drop coefficient firstly increased then became stable. In the case of wet air with ash particles, the pressure drop coefficient increased with the increase of the water mass fraction and decreased with the increase of the mainstream velocity. Compared with wet air without ash particles, the pressure drop coefficients were higher in the presence of ash particles, due to ash deposition.

Abstract:The heat transferring characteristics of corrugated tubes were investigated experimentally, with the water as cool media inside the tubes and vapor as hot media outside the tubes. The heat transferring coefficient was measured within the Reynolds Number from 1800 to 24000 and a correlation formula was obtained. It was shown that the heat transferring characteristics of corrugated tubes are better than corresponding smooth tubes and the heat transferring coefficient is about 3 times greater than that of the smooth tubes. The heat transferring characteristics are not sensitive to the contour tolerance of the corrugated tubes.

Abstract:The wet performance of microchannel heat exchanger (Fin Pitch=1. 1 mm) with hydrophobic,hydrophilic and without surface coating were studied under different conditions experimentally. The results indicated that hydrophobic surface coating had bad effects on air side performance:the capacity decreased by 14% under low air velocity and the decrease became less with the increase of air velocity;the pressure drop increased at least by 130% under different conditions except the condition of high air velocity&humidity. The capacity of hydrophilic heat exchanger decreased by 2% -8% under different conditions; the pressure drop decreased up to 50% under high air velocity &humidity and got improved under most conditions except for the 17% decrease under the condition of low air velocity&high hu-midity. Air side performance of microchannel heat exchanger with hydrophilic and without surface coating were studied after 260 h salt spray corrosion. The capacity of hydrophilic coating heat exchanger increased by 4% -6% compared to the one without surface coating,and pressure drop decreased by 14% -16%. The result indicated that hydrophilic coating was good for anti-corrosion.
A Research on Heat Transfer Enhancement at Shell-side with Corrugated Wire Gauze Packing

Abstract:The heat transfer process at shell-side of a heat exchanger scheme by the use of corrugated wire gauze packing was researched by simulation method.The effect of using corrugated wire gauze packing to enhance the heat transfer at shell-side was studied through solving the porous energy equation using the FLUENT software.The influence of the heat transfer performance at shell-side was analyzed under different porosity of corrugated packing and different inlet velocity.The results show that this scheme can enhance the heat transfer at shell-side in shell-and-tube heat exchanger distinctly.And the smaller porosity of corrugated wire gauze packing is,the lower inlet velocity of fluid at shell-side is and,the better performance of heat transfer is.Because the corrugated wire gauze packing has smaller resistance and less pressure reduction,this scheme has unique advantage to the heat transfer at lower inlet velocity.

Abstract:An experimental investigation on the condensation heat transfer of water and kerosene outside corrugated tube was carried out.The sleeving heat exchanger whose inside tube is corrugated tube was used in the experiment.It was placed in both horizontal direction and vertical direction.At different velocities of flow,the condensation heat transfer coefficient of corrugated tube was calculated based on the experimental data.And it was compared with the theoretical calculation value(based on the same temperature and velocity of flow) of smooth tube.The results show that as the liquid-film Reynolds number increases,the condensation heat transfer coefficient increases;and the condensation heat transfer coefficient of corrugated tube is greater than that of smooth tube.The corrugated tube improves the condensation heat transfer outside tube.This improvement of corrugated tube for water is more obvious than that for kerosene.

Abstract:The purpose of air-conditioning systems is to provide a suitable indoor environment with respect to temperature, humidity and fresh air. Liquid desiccant dehumidification constitutes an effective method for extracting moisture from humid air with less energy consumption. Current studies mainly focus on dehumidification system under certain heat and mass transfer ability (number of mass transfer units NTUm). This paper will investigate NTUm of counter-flow packing tower and its influence on system performance. An experiment including a counter-flow packing tower was conducted. When the height of tower was 0.7 m, the volumetric mass transfer coefficient was between 1-4 kg/(m(3).s) and NTUm presented a range between 0.9-1.4, when air flow rate changes from 1 kg/(m(2) s) to 2.5 kg/(m(2) s). When the height changed to 2.1 m, the NTUm of the tower presented a variation from 3.3 to 4.3. Furthermore, a simulation model is developed, which is validated by experimental data and past research results. The influence of NTUm on total circulation flow path is mainly caused by heat and cold offset and an NTUm value approximately of 4 constitutes a suitable value of increasing heat and mass transfer ability. Comparing three typical flow paths, when NTUm is lower than 3.5, inter-stage circulation presents improved performance in system COP. When NTUm is large, total circulation is efficient. The system COP cross points of flow paths are caused by heat and cold offset and concentration difference of the solution circulation between the dehumidifier and the regenerator, which can be quantified by loss coefficient s and chi respectively. The heat and mass transfer ability of the system should be considered in the designing process of flow path configuration to obtain an efficient performance for different range of NTUm. Abstract:NH3-H2O falling film absorption usually takes place with low solution flow rate in real absorption refrigeration system. An experimental study of inner vertical absorption is carried out for the consideration of air-cooling absorber. Variable working conditions are tested to evaluate the heat and mass transfer performances. The traditional evaluation method based on log-mean-temperature (concentration) difference is criticized for its lack of theoretical basis while simultaneous heat and mass transfer process occurs. A new method proposed by Kim and Infante Ferreira is modified to evaluate the experimental results with reasonable assumptions. The method is based on the derivation of coupled heat and mass transfer differential equations of NH3-H2O absorption process. The analysis of the same experimental data shows that the new method realizes better consistency with smaller error, especially in heat transfer aspect. Heat and mass transfer performance is enhanced with the increase of solution Reynolds number. Sub-cooling of inlet weak solution also has positive influence on the absorption process, which should be evaluated by the new method correctly. Two correlations are developed to evaluate both Nusselt and Sherwood numbers for the design of air-cooling absorber.

Abstract:This paper described the performance of heat and mass transfer of the moist air passing through the fin-tube coil. The momentum, heat and mass transfer equations are used. The velocity, temperature and concentration profiles of the moist air along the entrance and developed region are calculated by using numerical methods. The thickness of the condensate film and convective heat transfer coefficient are obtained. The effects of different dehumidification rate on the heat transfer and face velocity on the dehumidification are studied.The experiments are carried; out on a air-conditioner employing enthalpy difference methods. The test results correspond to numerical results very well.
Investigation on the Coupled Heat and Mass Transfer Process Between Extremely High Humidity Air and Liquid Desiccant in the Counter-Flow Adiabatic Packed Tower

Abstract:This paper presents the theoretical and experimental studies on the coupled heat and mass transfer process in a counter-flow adiabatic structured packed tower with the inlet air humidity ratio ranging from 20 g/kg air to 160 g/kg air. The simulation results show that the epsilon-NTU model is no longer reliable for extremely high humidity conditions, as the assumptions of the e-NTU model are no longer valid due to the great solution concentration variation. The finite difference model shows that the driving forces of heat and mass transfer decline much more significantly in high humidity conditions than in low humidity conditions. Totally 313 experimental runs were conducted using noncorrosive KCOOH as the liquid desiccant. The experimental results indicate the optimal ranges of the main parameters in high humidity conditions. Moreover, empirical correlations are obtained for the humidity removal rates at varying parameters. In high humidity conditions, the dehumidification effect is more significantly influenced by the liquid-air flow rate ratio and less influenced by the desiccant concentration and temperature compared with the low humidity conditions. This research helps to understand the heat and mass transfer process in extremely high humidity conditions and promote the application of liquid desiccant dehumidification technology in the field of industrial waste heat recovery. Abstract:Falling film flow is commonly utilized in engineering applications . To explore the heat transfer process over falling film plates, the effects of structure and liquid inlet Reynolds number on flow and heat transfer characteristics are studied. The results indicated that corrugation amplitude and flow rate thicken the liquid film. As the corrugation amplitude increased, the critical inlet flow velocity for smooth flow gradually rose. The local heat transfer coefficient was great in the thin fluid film. The heat transfer performance of the optimum corrugated plate was 45%–77 % higher than that of a flat plate. An empirical correlation equation for Nusselt number was developed at Reynolds number of 149.28–398.09 and corrugation amplitude to wavelength ratio of 0.025–0.1. The deviation was less than ±21 %. These findings are significant for necessary temperature regulation in the CO 2 capture packed column and also provide references for falling film equipment design and evaluation.

Numerical simulation of flow boiling heat transfer and pressure drop in a corrugated plate heat exchanger at low mass flux and vapor quality conditions

Abstract:This article reports on a numerical study conducted to predict the flow boiling dynamics, heat and mass transfer, and pressure drop in corrugated plate heat exchangers. The conservation equations are discretized in the context of the finite volume method and solved using the mixture multiphase flow model. The Semi Mechanistic Wall boiling model, based on Chen's method, is used to calculate the wall heat flux. Moreover, Lee's model is adopted to compute the evaporation/condensation rate. Water is used as the working fluid and solutions are generated at low mass flux and vapor content for subcooled and saturated liquid water at the inlet. An experimental setup is developed, and measurements are performed to validate the numerical solution. The model shows good agreement with experimental data and with values obtained from available correlations for the two-phase heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop. Results indicate an increase in the heat transfer coefficient when the mass flux is increased, and wall and inlet flow temperatures are decreased. Further, the drop in pressure increases with an increase in the mass flux, wall temperature, and vapor quality. The flow boiling heat transfer is found to be in the nucleate boiling regime. Additional new insights on the complex flow boiling process are reported by utilizing contour plots of the mass evaporation rate, vapor fractions, and velocity vector fields.
