Abstract:We report an optical-fiber spectroscopic carbon dioxide gas sensor based on a near-infrared dispersion turning coupler. The noise-equivalent absorption coefficient of 3.47×10 -7 cm -1 is achieved with a sample having the coupling-region-length of about 6 mm.

Abstract:A photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS)-based carbon monoxide (CO) gas sensor with a high-power laser and an enhanced gas absorption was demonstrated. The light source was a distributed feedback (DFB), continuous wave (CW) diode laser with a high output power of ~8 mW to give a strong excitation. The target gas received optical absorption enhanced two times by using a right-angle prism reflecting the laser beam. In order to reduce the noise from the background, wavelength modulation spectroscopy (WMS) and second-harmonic detection techniques were used. The modulation frequency and modulation depth were optimized theoretically and experimentally. Water vapor was added in the PAS sensor system to increase the vibrational–translational (V–T) relaxation rate of the CO molecule, which resulted in an ~8 times signal enhancement compared with the using of a dry CO/N2 gas mixture. The amplitude of the 2f signal had a 1.52-fold improvement compared to the one with only one time absorption. The experimental results showed that such a sensor had an excellent linear response to the optical power and gas concentration. At 1 s integration time, a minimum detection limit (MDL) for CO detection of 9.8 ppm was achieved. The long-term stability of the sensor system was evaluated with an Allan deviation analysis. When the integration time was 1100 s, the MDL improved to be 530 ppb. The detection performance of such a PAS-based CO sensor can be further improved when a laser with a higher output power and increasing optical absorption times is used.

Abstract:A fiber-optic photoacoustic CO sensor for gas insulation equipment is proposed, which relies on F-P interferometric cantilever-based differential lock-in amplification and optical multipass excitation enhancement. The sensor has excellent characteristics of high sensitivity, antielectromagnetic interference, fast response, and long-distance detection. The photoacoustic pressure waves in the two resonators of the differential photoacoustic cell (DPAC) are simultaneously detected by two fiber-optic interferometric cantilevers and processed differentially; thereby, the gas flow noise is effectively suppressed. Based on the comprehensive analysis of the superposition of photoacoustic excitation and multipass absorption, the diameter of the resonator is determined to be 6 mm. The optical power emitted by the 1566.6 nm distributed feedback laser is increased to 500 mW by an erbium-doped fiber amplifier. The near-infrared light is reflected 30 times in the multipass cell, which improves the order of magnitude of optical effective excitation. Due to the low sound velocity of SF6 gas, the resonant frequency of the DPAC with a resonator length of 80 mm is 760 Hz. The response time to CO/SF6 gas is 93 s with a flow rate of 500 sccm. The detection limit of the CO sensor is 53 ppb, which realizes the accurate and timely perception of the SF6 decomposition derivative CO and provides technical support for trouble-free operation of gas insulation equipment.

Abstract:We demonstrated the sensitive CO detection in a novel hollow-core negative curvature fiber (HC-NCF) with infrared laser absorption at 2.3 mu m. The HC-NCF consists of a single ring of eight nontouching silica capillaries around the air core, providing a single-mode light delivery of the 2.3-mu m distributed feedback laser. A high coupling efficiency of 90% was achieved with the aid of optimal free-space coupling optics. The hollow-core fiber was used as a gas cell for gas absorption measurement of a total path length of 85 cm. Both direct absorption spectroscopy (DAS) and wavelength modulation spectroscopy (WMS) were adopted to demonstrate the sensor performance by detecting the CO line R(10) at 4297.7 cm(-1). In scanned-wavelength DAS, we obtained a minimum detection limit (MDL) of 13 ppm CO, which was limited mainly by the existing mode noise in the HC-NCF. By applying a pressure difference of 0.8 bar between the two ends of the fiber, we demonstrated a very short gas loading time of only 5 s. Finally, we achieved a MDL of 0.4 ppm CO using the WMS technique, corresponding to a noise equivalent absorption of 1.6 x 10(-7) cm(-1).

Abstract:To take full advantage of lab-on-fiber technologies for gas sensing, we propose a reflective Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) CO2 gas sensor composed of the functional material [polyhexamethylene biguanide (PHMB)] and a single-mode fiber (SMF)-hollow core capillary (HCC) structure. The theoretical analysis of the FPI cavity mode in the PHMB film is discussed. The experiment results show a maximum sensitivity of 286 pm/ppm in the low-concentration region of 0–1000-ppm detection range and a high sensitivity of 6.88 pm/ppm in the atmosphere CO2 concentration range (200–600 ppm). The response time of the CO2 sensor is about 10 min. Repeated experiments show that the sensor has good sensing stability and a high selectivity for CO2 gas. In addition, the sensitivity of our CO2 sensor is stable to temperature changes. Moreover, the results of monitoring the real in-door atmosphere verify the repeatability and desirable sensing performance of our sensor. This reflective lab-on-fiber CO2 sensor has a concise structure, low cost, and high sensitivity possessing more possibilities in various and complex applications.

Abstract:A Michelson interferometric carbon monoxide (CO) fiber-optic sensor based on Co/Ni-MOF-74 is proposed and fabricated. The bimetallic-ion-coordination MOFs material Co/Ni-MOF-74 was prepared by solvothermal method. Through XRD and XPS characterizations, the results show that Co/Ni-MOF-74 and Ni-MOF-74 have the same crystal structure. Co/Ni-MOF-74 has a good adsorption effect on CO, and it is integrated into the optical fiber sensing structure for CO detection. In the CO concentration range of 0-35 ppm, the sensitivity and linearity are 0.02235 dB/ppm and 0.99936, respectively. The detection limit of the sensor is about 1.99046 ppm. The presented fiber-optic sensor has excellent selectivity, resistance to temperature interference and good time stability, and it is expected to be applied to the detection of trace CO.

[Study on CO2 measurement using tunable multi-mode diode laser absorption spectroscopy]

Abstract:Tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) technology is a kind of fast time response, large-range, continuous on-line monitoring gas detection technique. It is the mainstream technology of gas detection. In this paper the multimode laser diode was used as light source. Multi-mode laser combined with correlation spectroscopy can improve the test reliability and stability. It can also conquer the problem of the central wavelength change of the single mode diode laser due to thermal or mechanical fluctuations in durable working process. A FP laser was used as the light source in this research. A multi-mode diode laser system based on correlation spectroscopy and wavelength modulation spectroscopy (TMDL-COSPEC-WMS) was used to measure carbon dioxide in ambient air around 1 570 nm. The carbon dioxide concentrations were derived from the relationship between the normalized WMS-2f signal peak heights of the measurement and reference signals which selected based on high signal to noise ratio and correlation coefficient. All measurements were performed with controlled carbon dioxide and nitrogen mixtures in which carbon dioxide concentrations range from 0. 6% to 30%. The calculation results showed that there was a high linear relationship between the measured and actual carbon dioxide concentration, the linearity was 0. 998 7 and the fitted slope was 1. 061+/-0. 016 8 respectively over the tested range. A detection limit of 335 ppm m was achieved. The standard deviation of 0. 036 7% was achieved using 20 successive measurements with each measurement time taking approximately 10 s during 20 minutes, which demonstrated good stability of the system. Good agreements between the measurements of the system and actual values confirm the accuracy and potential utility of the system for carbon dioxide detection.

Abstract:We report a multicomponent gas sensor based on hollow-core fiber (HCF) photothermal spectroscopy with frequency-division multiplexing (FDM). A single antiresonant HCF (AR-HCF) is used as the gas cell, which supports broadband transmission from near-infrared (NIR) to mid-infrared (MIR), covering the absorption lines of water vapor (H2O) at 1.39 μm, carbon dioxide (CO2) at 2.00 μm, and carbon monoxide (CO) at 4.60 μm. The NIR and MIR pump lasers at the above wavelengths are coupled into the AR-HCF from the opposite ends and modulated at 7.5, 8.0, and 8.5 kHz, respectively, to produce photothermal phase modulations at different frequencies. A common probe Fabry-Perot interferometer at 1.55 μm is adopted to detect the phase modulations, which are demodulated simultaneously using three lock-in amplifiers at the respective second harmonic frequencies. With a 13-cm-long AR-HCF, simultaneous detections of H2O, CO2, and CO are demonstrated with the limits of detection (LODs) of 2.7 ppm, 25 ppb, and 9 ppb for 1 s lock-in time constant, respectively. The LODs go down to 222, 1.5, and 0.6 ppb, respectively, for 1000 s averaging time. The photothermal signals of CO and CO2, which are humidity-level dependent, are well calibrated by use of the measured H2O signal. The multicomponent gas sensor is compact in configuration and shows good stability with signal fluctuation less than 1.7% over 2 h.

Abstract:A photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) based carbon dioxide (CO2) sensor with a fixed wavelength quantum cascade laser (FW-QCL) was demonstrated. The emission wavelength of the FW-QCL at 4.42 μm in the mid-infrared spectral region matched a fundamental CO2 absorption line. Amplitude modulation of the laser intensity was used to match the resonant photoacoustic (PA) cell. The noise from the background was reduced with the correlation demodulation technique. The experimental results showed that the sensor had excellent signal stability and a concentration linear response. When the integration time was 1 s, a 1σ minimum detection limit (MDL) of 2.84 parts per million (ppm) for CO2 detection was achieved. The long-term stability of the sensor was evaluated by means of an Allan deviation analysis. With an integration time of ~100 s, the MDL was improved to 1 ppm. This sensor was also used to measure the CO2 concentration from some common emission sources, such as cigarette smoking, automobile exhaust, and the combustion of some carbon-containing materials, which confirmed the stability and robustness of the reported FW-QCL based CO2-PAS sensor system.

Near-Infrared Off-Axis Cavity-Enhanced Optical Frequency Comb Spectroscopy for CO2/CO Dual-Gas Detection Assisted by Machine Learning

Abstract:Cavity-enhanced direct frequency comb spectroscopy (CE-DFCS) is widely used as a highly sensitive gas sensing technology in various gas detection fields. For the on-axis coupling incidence scheme, the detection accuracy and stability are seriously affected by the cavity-mode noise, and therefore, stable operation inevitably requires external electronic mode-locking and sweeping devices, substantially increasing system complexity. To address this issue, we propose off-axis cavity-enhanced optical frequency comb spectroscopy from both theoretical and experimental aspects, which is applied to the detection of single- and dual-gas of carbon monoxide (CO) and carbon dioxide (CO2) in the near-infrared. An erbium-doped fiber frequency comb with a repetition frequency of ∼41.709 MHz is coupled into a resonant cavity with a length of ∼360 mm in an off-axis manner, exciting numerous high-order modes to effectively suppress cavity-mode noise. The performance of multiple machine learning models is compared for the inversion of a single/dual gas concentration. A few absorbance spectra are collected to build a sample data set, which is then utilized for model training and learning. The results demonstrate that the Particle Swarm Optimization Support Vector Machine (PSO-SVM) model achieves the highest predictive accuracy for gas concentration and is ultimately applied to the detection system. Based on Allan deviation, the detection limit for CO in single-gas detection can reach 8.247 parts per million by volume (ppmv) by averaging 87 spectra. Meanwhile, for simultaneous CO2/CO measurement with highly overlapping absorbance spectra, the LoD can be reduced to 13.196 and 4.658 ppmv, respectively. The proposed optical gas sensing technique indicates the potential for the development of a field-deployable and intelligent sensor system capable of simultaneous detection of multiple gases.

Abstract:A sensor system suitable for monitoring changes in partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO(2)) in surface seawater or in the atmosphere has been developed. Surface seawater samples are pumped into a PVC tube enclosing an inner Teflon AF tube, which served as a long pathlength gas-permeable liquid-core waveguide for spectrophotometry. The Teflon cell contains a pH-sensitive indicator-buffer solution consisting of bromothymol blue (BTB) and sodium carbonate. Carbon dioxide in the sample diffuses into the indicator-buffer solution to reach equilibrium, resulting in pH changes, which are detected by changes in the absorbance of BTB at wavelengths of 620 and 434 nm. The pCO(2) in the sample is then derived from the pH change. The sensor has a response time of 2 min at the 95% equilibrium value and a measurement precision of 0.26-0.37% in the range 200-800 microatm pCO(2). This chemical sensor takes advantage of a combination of long pathlength, multiple wavelength detection, indicator solution renewal, and in situ automatic control technology, and has the feature of low power consumption (the average being approximately 4 W with a peak of approximately 8 W).

Abstract:Optical spectroscopic sensors are powerful tools for analysing gas mixtures in industrial and scientific applications. Whilst highly sensitive spectrometers tend to have a large footprint, miniaturized optical devices usually lack sensitivity or wideband spectroscopic coverage. By employing a widely tunable, passively stable fiber Fabry-Perot cavity (FFPC), we demonstrate an absorption spectroscopic device that continuously samples over several tens of terahertz. Both broadband scans using cavity mode width spectroscopy to identify the spectral fingerprints of analytes and a fast, low-noise scan method for single absorption features to determine concentrations are exemplary demonstrated for the oxygen A-band. The novel scan method uses an injected modulation signal in a Pound-Drever-Hall feedback loop together with a lock-in measurement to reject noise at other frequencies. The FFPC-based approach provides a directly fiber coupled, extremely miniaturized, light-weight and robust platform for analyzing small analyte volumes that can straightforwardly be extended to sensing at different wavelength ranges, liquid analytes and other spectroscopic techniques with only little adjustments of the device platform.

However, limited by the poor specific adsorption of gas molecules as well as insufficient coupling efficiency, there is still a long way to go toward realizing a highly sensitive optical CO2 gas sensor. Herein, by combining the advantages of a whispering-gallery-mode microcavity and a metal-organic framework (MOF) film, a porous functional microcavity (PF-MC) was fabricated with the assistance of the atomic layer deposition technique and was applied to CO2 sensing. In this functional composite, the rolled-up microcavity provides the ability to tune the propagation of light waves and the electromagnetic coupling with the surroundings via an evanescent field, while the nanoporous MOF film contributes to the specific adsorption of CO2. The composite demonstrates a high sensitivity of 188 nm RIU-1 (7.4 pm/% with respect to the CO2 concentration) and a low detection limit of ∼5.85 × 10-5 RIU. Furthermore, the PF-MC exhibits great selectivity to CO2 and outstanding reproducibility, which is promising for the next-generation optical gas sensing devices.

Abstract:We demonstrate the first, to the best of our knowledge, photothermal carbon monoxide (CO) sensor using a hollow-core negative curvature fiber. The hollow-core fiber features a typical structure of one ring cladding containing eight non-touching capillaries to form a negative curvature core-surround. The photothermal effect in a 40-mu m hollow core is induced by CO absorption at 2327 nm and detected by a Mach-Zehnder interferometer operating at 1533 nm. By using wavelength modulation spectroscopy, we achieve a normalized noise equivalent absorption coefficient of 4.4 x 10(-8) cm(-1) WHz-1/2. As CO has a very slow vibrational-translational relaxation process, we enhance the photothermal signal by enhancing the relaxation with the water vapor additive. (C) 2019 Optical Society of America.

Abstract:Two optical waveguide sensors based on SOS (silicon-on-sapphire) for detecting CO2 are theoretically proposed. The operational wavelength is 4.23 μm, which is the maximum absorption line of CO2. The power confinement factor (η) value is over 40% and 50%, the propagation loss is 0.98 dB/cm and 2.99 dB/cm, respectively, in the slot waveguide and SWGS (subwavelength grating slot) waveguide. An inverted tapered structure is used for the transition from strip waveguide to slot waveguide and constitutes the sensing absorption region, with the coupling efficiency that can reach more than 90%. When the optimal absorption length of the slot waveguide and SWGS waveguide is 1.02 cm and 0.33 cm, respectively, the maximum sensitivity can reach 6.66 × 10−5 (ppm−1) and 2.60 × 10−5 (ppm−1). Furthermore, taking the slot waveguide as an example, spiral and meander structures enable the long-distance sensing path to integrate into a small area.

Abstract:A fast gas sensing scheme based on a non-dispersive frequency comb spectroscopy (ND-FCS) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Its capacity for multi-component gas measurement is experimentally investigated as well, by using the time-division-multiplexing (TDM) method to realize specific wavelength selection of the fiber laser optical frequency comb (OFC). A dual-channel optical fiber sensing scheme is established with a sensing path consisting of a multi-pass gas cell (MPGC), and a reference path with a calibrated signal to track the repetition frequency drift of the OFC for a real-time lock-in compensation and system stabilization. The long-term stability evaluation and the simultaneous dynamic monitoring are carried out, with the target gases of ammonia (NH3), carbon monoxide (CO) and carbon dioxide (CO2). The fast CO2 detection in human breath is also conducted. The experimental results show that at an integration time of 10 ms, the detection limits of the three species are evaluated to be 0.0048%, 0.1869% and 0.0467%, respectively. A low minimum detectable absorbance (MDA) down to 2.8 × 10-4 can be achieved and a dynamic response with millisecond time can be realized. Our proposed ND-FCS exhibits excellent gas sensing performance with merits of high sensitivity, fast response and long-term stability. It also shows great potential for multi-component gas monitoring in atmospheric monitoring applications.

Abstract:Optical fiber acoustic sensors with miniature size and high sensitivity are attractive to develop compact photoacoustic spectroscopy. Here, a compact photoacoustic gas sensor was demonstrated by utilizing a diaphragm-based fiber-optic Fabry-Perot cavity as both the acoustic sensor and the multipass cell. A nanoscale graphite film was used as the flexible diaphragm to increase the acoustic sensitivity of the Fabry-Perot cavity and the cavity inner surface was coated with highly-reflective Au film to form a multipass cell for amplification of the photoacoustic signal. With a laser power of 20 mW at 1532.8 nm, the sensor demonstrated a low detection limit of ∼ 50 ppb for C 2 H 2 gas with an integration time of ∼ 100 s. The optical fiber photoacoustic gas sensor with a millimeter-scale diameter and ppb-level detection limit is promising for trace gas sensing in various areas including industrial process and environmental monitoring.

Sandwiched Long-Period Fiber Grating Fabricated by MEMS Process for CO2 Gas Detection

Abstract:This paper presents an optical fiber gas sensor based on sandwiched long-period fiber grating (SLPFG) that is fabricated via the microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) process and coated with amino silica adsorbent for carbon dioxide (CO₂) gas sensing. The amine-modified nanoporous silica foams were coated onto the SLPFG for CO₂ adsorption. To characterize the CO₂ adsorption of the SLPFG sensor, a gas sensing test was conducted with a mixed gas consisting of 15% CO₂ and 85% nitrogen at a flow rate of 0.2 L/min. The results showed that the spectra of the SLPFG were varied with the gas flow within 21 min. After that, the transmission spectra of the SLPFG held steady and exhibited no further change. This phenomenon was caused by the adsorption saturation of the amine-modified nanoporous silica foams which were coated onto the SLPFG. During the absorption process, the transmission was increasing by about 11.27 dB (from -23.11 to -11.84 dB), and the increasing rate of transmission was 0.4598 dB/min. Repeatable adsorption and desorption experiment results showed that the SLPFG CO₂ gas sensor exhibited good repeatability and a short response time. The recovery rate for each cycle was about 85%, and the required recovery time was short. Therefore, elaborated SLPFG gas sensor could potentially be used as a gas sensor for monitoring CO₂ adsorption in the context of various industrial, agricultural, and household applications.
