Abstract:A greenhouse gas sensor has been developed to simultaneously detect multiple gas species within a hollow-core photonic bandgap fiber (HC-PBF) structure entirely composed of fibers. To enhance sensitivity, the gas cell consists of HC-PBF enclosed between two single-mode fibers fused with a reflective end surface to double the absorption length. The incorporation of side holes for gas diffusion allows for analysis of the relationship between gas diffusion speed, number of drilled side holes, and energy loss. As the number of drilled holes increases, the response time decreases to less than 3 min at the expense of energy loss. Gas experiments demonstrated detection limits of 0.1 ppm for methane and 2 ppm for carbon dioxide, with an average time of 50 s. In-situ testing conducted in rice fields validates the effectiveness of the developed gas detection system using HC-PBF cells, establishing all-fiber sensors with high sensitivity and rapid response.

Abstract:Pump-probe photothermal spectroscopy has been recently proposed for sensitive gas detection. The probe laser wavelength was usually locked at the quadrature point of an interferometer to provide a linear output of the phase signal. However, this detection scheme brings unwanted fluctuations to the interferometer. Here we report a novel phase demodulation method of the probe laser for photothermal spectroscopy to enhance the stability. We demonstrate a proof-of-concept experiment by performing photothermal detection of methane (CH4) inside a hollow-core fiber, which is sandwiched by two pieces of solid-core fibers to form a low-finesse fiber-optic Fabry-Prot interferometer (FPI). Besides the wavelength modulation of the 1.65-m pump laser, we employed a dither to modulate the injection current of the probe diode laser, which was frequency-locked to the FP cavity resonance. The photothermal signal was sensitively measured from the error signal of the feedback loop by demodulating the FPI output at the dither frequency. A normalized noise equivalent absorption (NNEA) coefficient of 7.5 109 cm1WHz12 was achieved in this work. A comparison to the conventional quadrature point locking technique was performed to reveal the remarkable sensor stability with immunity to optical disturbance.

Abstract:In this work, we present for the first time a laser-based dual gas sensor utilizing a silica-based Antiresonant Hollow-Core Fiber (ARHCF) operating in the Near- and Mid-Infrared spectral region. A 1-m-long fiber with an 84-μm diameter air-core was implemented as a low-volume absorption cell in a sensor configuration utilizing the simple and well-known Wavelength Modulation Spectroscopy (WMS) method. The fiber was filled with a mixture of methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2), and a simultaneous detection of both gases was demonstrated targeting their transitions at 3.334 μm and 1.574 μm, respectively. Due to excellent guidance properties of the fiber and low background noise, the proposed sensor reached a detection limit down to 24 parts-per-billion by volume for CH4 and 144 parts-per-million by volume for CO2. The obtained results confirm the suitability of ARHCF for efficient use in gas sensing applications for over a broad spectral range. Thanks to the demonstrated low loss, such fibers with lengths of over one meter can be used for increasing the laser-gas molecules interaction path, substituting bulk optics-based multipass cells, while delivering required flexibility, compactness, reliability and enhancement in the sensor’s sensitivity.

Abstract:A near-infrared (NIR) distributed feedback (DFB) laser sensor based on long optical path absorption spectroscopy technique was developed for simultaneous measurement of atmospheric methane (CH 4 ), carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) and oxygen (O 2 ). A fiber-optic switch (FOS) in conjunction with the time-division multiplexing (TDM) technique was adopted to enable different lasers scan over the target gas absorption lines in turn. The long optical path wavelength modulation spectroscopy (WMS) technique with second harmonic detection as well as a laser power fluctuation correction method was used to improve the sensor's precision and accuracy. For the selected gas absorption lines, located at 6046.945 cm -1 , 6361.245 cm -1 and 7877.647 cm -1 , the detection limit (1σ) of 0.034 parts per million (ppm) for CH 4 , 11.921 ppm for CO 2 and 0.14% for O 2 was achieved according to the concentration and noise level. Allan deviation analysis indicates that the 1-s measurement precision was 0.030 ppm for CH 4 , 11.518 ppm for CO 2 and 0.14% for O 2 , which could be improved to 6.5E-4 ppm, 0.255 ppm and 0.005% at an optimal average time of 800 s. A two-day continuous measurement of the CH 4 , CO 2 , and O 2 concentration from ambient air was carried out, which verifies the stability and robustness of the developed multi-gas sensor.

Abstract:A near-infrared (NIR) dual-gas sensor has been developed for simultaneous detection of atmospheric trace methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2). To realize high sensitivity and high precision, wavelength modulation spectroscopy with 2f/1f (WMS-2f/1f) detection method was adopted for eliminating laser light intensity fluctuation, and laser wavelength locking strategy based on a self-developed proportion integration differentiation (PID) algorithm was used for suppressing laser wavelength shifting effect. Two fiber-coupled DFB diode lasers with central wavelengths near 1653.7 nm and 1579.6 nm are applied for simultaneously measuring CH4 and CO2 spectra, respectively, and frequency division multiplexing (FDM) technique is employed to resolve the potential crosstalk effect. Real-time measurement of ambient atmospheric trace CH4 and CO2 was performed to demonstrate the long-term stability of the sensor system. Allan deviation analysis indicates that detection sensitivity of 0.1 ppm for CH4 and 2.27 ppm for CO2 was achieved with a 1 s average time, which can be further improved to 18 ppb and 0.3 ppm with the optimal integration time of 462 s and 392 s, respectively.

Abstract:Laser absorption spectroscopy has proven to be an effective approach for gas sensing, which plays an important role in the fields of military, industrial, medical and basic research. This paper presents a multiplexed gas sensing system based on optical frequency comb (OFC) calibrated frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) tuning nonlinearity. The system can be used for multi-parameter synchronous measurement of gas absorption spectrum and multiplexed optical path. Mul-ti-channel parallel detection is realized by combining wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) and frequency division multiplexing (FDM) techniques. By introducing nonlinear optical crystals, broadband spectrum detection is simultaneously achieved over a bandwidth of hundreds of nanometers. An OFC with ultra-high frequency stability is used as the frequency calibration source, which guarantees the measurement accuracy. The test samples involve H 13 C 14 N, C 2 H 2 and Rb vapor cells of varying densities and 5 parallel measurement experiments are designed. The results show that the measurement accuracies of spectral absorption line and the optical path are 150 MHz and 20 μm, respectively. The scheme offers the advantages of multiplexed, multi-parameter, wide spectrum and high resolution detection, which can realize the identification of multi-gas components and the high-precision inversion of absorption lines under different environments. The proposed sensor demonstrates great potential in the field of high-resolution absorption spectrum measurement for gas sensing applications.

Abstract:A fast gas sensing scheme based on a non-dispersive frequency comb spectroscopy (ND-FCS) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Its capacity for multi-component gas measurement is experimentally investigated as well, by using the time-division-multiplexing (TDM) method to realize specific wavelength selection of the fiber laser optical frequency comb (OFC). A dual-channel optical fiber sensing scheme is established with a sensing path consisting of a multi-pass gas cell (MPGC), and a reference path with a calibrated signal to track the repetition frequency drift of the OFC for a real-time lock-in compensation and system stabilization. The long-term stability evaluation and the simultaneous dynamic monitoring are carried out, with the target gases of ammonia (NH3), carbon monoxide (CO) and carbon dioxide (CO2). The fast CO2 detection in human breath is also conducted. The experimental results show that at an integration time of 10 ms, the detection limits of the three species are evaluated to be 0.0048%, 0.1869% and 0.0467%, respectively. A low minimum detectable absorbance (MDA) down to 2.8 × 10-4 can be achieved and a dynamic response with millisecond time can be realized. Our proposed ND-FCS exhibits excellent gas sensing performance with merits of high sensitivity, fast response and long-term stability. It also shows great potential for multi-component gas monitoring in atmospheric monitoring applications.

Abstract:Isolated from Streptomyces tsukubaensis, tacrolimus is a macrolide lactone that has been used extensively for immunosuppressive therapy in pediatric transplant recipients (1, 2). It is the backbone of immunosuppressive therapy for pediatric solid organ and bone marrow transplant in many centers, including ours. In this month’s issue of Pediatric Transplantation, Frühwirth et al. describe three cases of solid organ transplanted children who suffered increased morbidity caused by a raised trough blood level of tacrolimus in association with rotaviral gastroenteritis (3). A similar observation has been made in two liver transplant infants who exhibited a three-fold rise in the trough levels of tacrolimus and required a reduction in the dose of tacrolimus for less than 1 week during acute diarrheal illness with rotavirus (4). Chronic diarrhea of non-rotaviral etiology has also been shown to be associated with a similar phenomenon in a pediatric renal transplant patient (5). This patient required a three-fold reduction in the dose of tacrolimus during 6 weeks of chronic diarrheal illness and returned to her usual tacrolimus dose when the diarrhea stopped. In patients with intestinal transplant, a sudden rise in the level of tacrolimus has been observed with episodes of rejection (N. Mittal, T. Kato, A. Tzakis, unpubl. obs.). Possible explanations for the rise in blood levels of tacrolimus include hemoconcentration, fasting, increased absorption as a result of increased intestinal permeability, or reduced hepatic metabolism caused by reduced hepatic blood flow or hepatic dysfunction (3–5). Despite the extensive use of tacrolimus for almost a decade, until recently little was known about the important role that the intestine plays in its metabolism (6). Factors involved in oral drug bioavailability – gastric emptying, pH, interaction with food, absorption parameters of the drug (dissolution, lipophilicity, particle size, active uptake by mucosa), and hepatic extraction as ‘first-pass metabolism’ – have traditionally been important considerations. The contributions of intestinal metabolism and Pglycoprotein (P-gp) to the observed changes in the bioavailability of tacrolimus have recently been investigated and these may play dominant roles (6–10).

Abstract:Abstract Laser spectroscopy outperforms electrochemical and semiconductor gas sensors in selectivity and environmental survivability. However, the performance of the state-of-the-art laser sensors is still insufficient for many high precision applications. Here, we report mode-phase-difference photothermal spectroscopy with a dual-mode anti-resonant hollow-core optical fiber and demonstrate all-fiber gas (acetylene) detection down to ppt (parts-per-trillion) and <1% instability over a period of 3 hours. An anti-resonant hollow-core fiber could be designed to transmit light signals over a broad wavelength range from visible to infrared, covering molecular absorption lines of many important gases. This would enable multi-component gas detection with a single sensing element and pave the way for ultra-precision gas sensing for medical, environmental and industrial applications.

Abstract:In this article, a mid-infrared all-fiber light-induced thermoelastic spectroscopy (LITES) sensor based on a hollow-core anti-resonant fiber (HC-ARF) was reported for the first time. The HC-ARF was applied as a light transmission medium and gas chamber. The constructed all-fiber structure has merits of low loss, easy optical alignment, good system stability, reduced sensor size and cost. The mid-infrared transmission structure can be utilized to target the strongest gas absorption lines. The reversely-tapered SM1950 fiber and the HC-ARF were spatially butt-coupled with a V-shaped groove between the two fibers to facilitate gas entry. Carbon monoxide (CO) with an absorption line at 4291.50 cm -1 (2.33 μm) was chosen as the target gas to verify the sensing performance. The experimental results showed that the all-fiber LITES sensor based on HC-ARF had an excellent linear response to CO concentration. Allan deviation analysis indicated that the system had excellent long-term stability. A minimum detection limit (MDL) of 3.85 ppm can be obtained when the average time was 100 s.

Remote Multipoint Fiber Optic Gas Sensors Using an Fmcw Technique and A Tunable Laser

Abstract:The cost per sensing point may be reduced by networking a number of gas sensors that shares the same tunable laser and/or the same signal processing electronics. In this paper we report on the use of a frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) technique for addressing the remote optical fiber gas sensor arrays. The sensor network is of a ladder topology and is interrogated by a tunable external-cavity semiconductor lasers. The system performance in terms of detection sensitivity and crosstalk between sensors is investigated. By using appropriate wavelength modulation/scanning coupled with low pass filtering, the coherent interferometric noise can be reduced greatly. Computer simulation shows that an array of 20 acetylene (C2H2) gas sensors with 2000ppm (2.5cm gas cell, or 50ppm.m) detection sensitivity for each sensor may be realized. A two-sensor acetylene gas detection system is experimentally demonstrated with detection sensitivity of 165ppm/root Hz (2.5cm gas cell or 4ppm.m/root Hz) and crosstalk of -25dB.

Abstract:Optical fiber acoustic sensors with miniature size and high sensitivity are attractive to develop compact photoacoustic spectroscopy. Here, a compact photoacoustic gas sensor was demonstrated by utilizing a diaphragm-based fiber-optic Fabry-Perot cavity as both the acoustic sensor and the multipass cell. A nanoscale graphite film was used as the flexible diaphragm to increase the acoustic sensitivity of the Fabry-Perot cavity and the cavity inner surface was coated with highly-reflective Au film to form a multipass cell for amplification of the photoacoustic signal. With a laser power of 20 mW at 1532.8 nm, the sensor demonstrated a low detection limit of ∼ 50 ppb for C 2 H 2 gas with an integration time of ∼ 100 s. The optical fiber photoacoustic gas sensor with a millimeter-scale diameter and ppb-level detection limit is promising for trace gas sensing in various areas including industrial process and environmental monitoring.

Abstract:By combining frequency-division multiplexing and normalized wavelength modulation spectroscopy, a robust remote multi-species sensor was developed and demonstrated for practical hydrocarbon monitoring. Independently modulated laser beams are combined to simultaneously interrogate different gas samples using an open-ended centimeter-size multipass cell. Gas species of interest are demodulated with the second harmonics to enhance sensitivity, and high immunity to laser power variation is achieved by normalizing to the corresponding first harmonics. Performance of the optical sensor was experimentally evaluated using methane (CH4) and acetylene (C2H2) samples, which were separated by a 3-km fiber cable from the laser source. Sub-ppm sensitivity with 1-s time resolution was achieved for both gas species. Moreover, even with large laser intensity fluctuations ranging from 0 to 6 dB, the noise can be kept within 1.38 times as much as that of a stable intensity case. The reported spectroscopic technique would provide a promising optical sensor for remote monitoring of multi hazardous gases with high robustness.

Abstract:We proposed a six-gas simultaneous detection system for methane (CH 4 ), ethane (C 2 H 6 ), acetylene (C 2 H 2 ), ethylene (C 2 H 4 ), carbon monoxide (CO) and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) based on wavelength modulation spectroscopy (WMS). Five different near infrared distributed feedback (DFB) lasers combined with a custom $5\times1$ wavelength division multiplexer were used to detect the six gases. The lasers were modulated at five different sinusoidal signals and the detection light intensity signals were demodulated with corresponding sinusoidal signals, which can be named frequency division multiplexing (FDM). Among them, CH 4 and C 2 H 6 were measured with one laser based on time division multiplexing (TDM). The principle of four multi-gas detection based on FDM was also derived. To miniaturize the device, a Raspberry Pi was used for data processing based on python, and the detected gas concentrations can be displayed directly on the screen. The six-gas sensing system exhibits detection limits of 247 ppb, 1.28 ppm, 126 ppb, 982 ppb, 2.55 ppm and 4.87 ppm with average time of 1 s for CH 4 , C 2 H 6 , C 2 H 2 , C 2 H 4 , CO and CO 2 , respectively. With an average time extended to 100 s, the measurement precision achieves 24 ppb, 135 ppb, 14 ppb, 141 ppb, 495 ppb and 608 ppb, respectively. With a fast response time, compact size and high detection sensitivity, the detection system is promising for dissolved gas analysis (DGA) in transformer oil and other material aging process.
Dual gas sensor based on anti-resonant hollow-core fiber for detection of CO2 and CH[math] with different absorption lines

Abstract:Journal of Nonlinear Optical Physics &Materials, Ahead of Print. The simultaneous detection of a mixture of two gases with the aid of unique and excellent capabilities of anti-resonance hollow-core fibers (AR-HCF), is numerically investigated in this article. Low-loss transmission bands in near and mid-infrared, which correspond to the transition of methane (CH[math] and carbon dioxide (CO[math], are considered in this work. Reasonable consideration of structural parameters has caused the low-loss transmission band covering 1.57 [math]m and 3.33 [math]m wavelengths. The second harmonics caused by the interaction of the laser beam and the gas sample inside the hollow core of the fiber were analyzed utilizing the fast Fourier transform (FFT) method. The maximum amplitude for the corresponding frequency at the determined concentration has reached 3002 [math] for CH4 and 6381 [math] for CO2. Enhancement of the inhibited coupling between the fundamental mode and some of the cladding modes and leakage loss reduction, extra capillary tubes nested inside the silica tubes forming the fiber cladding. The simulation results confirm the suitability of the proposed structure for efficient utilization in gas sensing applications for two different spectral ranges in the near and mid-infrared. Benefiting from a large hollow core, very low background noise and anti-resonance properties, high sensitivity of about 99.6% and confinement loss of 0.127 dB/m were obtained.

Abstract:To take full advantage of lab-on-fiber technologies for gas sensing, we propose a reflective Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) CO2 gas sensor composed of the functional material [polyhexamethylene biguanide (PHMB)] and a single-mode fiber (SMF)-hollow core capillary (HCC) structure. The theoretical analysis of the FPI cavity mode in the PHMB film is discussed. The experiment results show a maximum sensitivity of 286 pm/ppm in the low-concentration region of 0–1000-ppm detection range and a high sensitivity of 6.88 pm/ppm in the atmosphere CO2 concentration range (200–600 ppm). The response time of the CO2 sensor is about 10 min. Repeated experiments show that the sensor has good sensing stability and a high selectivity for CO2 gas. In addition, the sensitivity of our CO2 sensor is stable to temperature changes. Moreover, the results of monitoring the real in-door atmosphere verify the repeatability and desirable sensing performance of our sensor. This reflective lab-on-fiber CO2 sensor has a concise structure, low cost, and high sensitivity possessing more possibilities in various and complex applications.

Optical Fiber Gases Sensing Array with Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave Technique

Abstract:A novel optical fiber gases sensing network system for monitoring the multi-point gas sensors is described.Using the frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) technique,a two-sensor array is realized for the detection of acetylene gas.Under atmospheric prseeure,the minimum detectable concentration is about 300ppm with 2.5cm gas cells.

Abstract:Abstract Non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) spectroscopy analyzes the concentration of target gases based on their characteristic infrared absorption. In conventional NDIR gas sensors, an infrared detector has to pair with a bandpass filter to select the target gas. However, multiplexed NDIR gas sensing requires multiple pairs of bandpass filters and detectors, which makes the sensor bulky and expensive. Here, we propose a multiplexed NDIR gas sensing platform consisting of a narrowband infrared detector array as read-out. By integrating plasmonic metamaterial absorbers with pyroelectric detectors at the pixel level, the detectors exhibit spectrally tunable and narrowband photoresponses, circumventing the need for separate bandpass filter arrays. We demonstrate the sensing of H 2 S, CH 4 , CO 2 , CO, NO, CH 2 O, NO 2 , SO 2 . The detection limits of common gases such as CH 4 , CO 2 , and CO are 63 ppm, 2 ppm, and 11 ppm, respectively. We also demonstrate the deduction of the concentrations of two target gases in a mixture.

Abstract:A novel CO2 non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) sensor using the mid-infrared (mid-IR) hollow fiber as a gas cell has been demonstrated. The mid-IR hollow fiber is chosen for its optimum transmission band (band-gap) overlap with CO2 fundamental absorption spectrum around 4.26μm to serve as a filter. A comparison with the system using a smooth metal cell is presented. The signal noise suggests that a measurement resolution better than 5 ppm concentration is achievable using this mid-IR hollow fiber. The response time of the system using hollow fiber can be in the order of shorter than 10s with the sensitivity of 1.82 mv/ppm.
