Abstract:Piezoelectric-based smart aggregate (SA) is suitable for seismic stress monitoring in concrete, due to the advantages of fast response, good compatibility, and low cost. However, It is still unknown what the effects of concrete heterogeneity and crack propagation are on SA-based seismic stress monitoring, resulting from the maximum aggregate size. In this paper, these effects were experimentally investigated, taking into account three types of maximum aggregate sizes: 20 mm, 25 mm, and 31.5 mm, which are most commonly used in normal strength concrete. Two typical seismic loading scenarios, including amplitude-increased repeated loading and monotonic loading till failure were applied on four identical concrete cylinders for each type of maximum aggregate size. Totally 72 SAs were employed to bridge the gap between SA output and applied stress in the sense of probability. The experimental results demonstrated that the maximum aggregate size has slight effect on the hysteresis of SA. Larger maximum aggregate size results in more dispersed crack and higher coefficient of variation of SA output. For the three types of maximum aggregate size adopted in this study, the stress-voltage relationship of SA can be expressed as the same function for convenience in practical application, regardless of loading path.
