Abstract:Ground motion duration has been demonstrated to exert a significant impact on structural responses for self-centering systems in the companion paper (part 1), yet it has not been explicitly considered in the evaluation of structural collapse capacity. This paper investigates the influence of seismic duration on assessments of structural collapse capacity for self-centering systems with varying structural features. Nonlinear incremental dynamic analyses are conducted using two record sets with different durations, while spectrally equivalent process is employed to isolate duration effects from seismic intensity and frequency. The procedure outlined in FEMA P695 is adopted to assess structural collapse risk, while the recommended duration-blind earthquake records are examined for their reasonability. Meanwhile, the discrepancy in duration effects between conventional and self-centering systems is investigated. Results show that earthquakes with longer duration elevate the collapse risk significantly compared to shorter duration earthquakes. Self-centering systems with varying structural features consistently meet the performance objectives stipulated in FEMA P695. Notably, enhancing the self-centering parameter proves effective in mitigating structural damage. Furthermore, conventional systems exhibit heightened sensitivity to seismic durations compared to self-centering systems. While the structural collapse capacity evaluated using the FEMA record set aligns with that from the short duration set, it underestimates collapse risk for systems under earthquakes with longer duration. The results highlight the imperative of explicitly considering earthquake duration in structural collapse capacity assessments.
