Abstract:The preparation of dimethyl carbonate by transesterification of ethylene carbonate and methanol has an important application in industry. The preparation of dimethyl carbonate by reactive distillation and the efficient separation of dimethyl carbonate and methanol are the inevitable requirements of the sustainable development of extractive distillation. Based on the quantum chemistry calculation and molecular dynamics calculation analysis, a better extractant (2-Furaldehyde) was selected. The simulated extractive distillation was designed to separate dimethyl carbonate methanol. The sigma - profile was drawn by using COSMO-SAC model, and three different separation processes of dimethyl carbonate production were compared and optimized. Taking TAC as the objective function, the separation process of reactive dividing-wall extractive distillation can reduce about 21% and carbon dioxide emission by about 10% compared with the common reactive distillation process, which has obvious economic advantages and environmental performance. Through the economic and environmental optimization analysis of the production and separation process of dimethyl carbonate, it provides a certain guiding significance for the actual production of dimethyl carbonate and the separation of dimethyl carbonate methanol.

Abstract:This work proposes a simulation-based multi objective optimization model for the operation of the product separation process in a methanol to propylene (MTP) plant, striving to enhance the system energy utilization efficiency. The formation of byproducts including an oxygenated hydrocarbon, dimethyl ether (DME), makes the product refining process highly energy-intensive, not only because that the various hydrocarbon byproducts require a long train of distillation columns but also owing to the fact that DME forms azeotrope with product propylene. Furthermore, the formation of oxygenated DME byproduct varies with the catalyst activity, which makes the system more complex. The contribution of this paper is 2-fold. First, it proposes a novel way of DME removal with responsive consumption of extractant methanol according to the DME concentration during one production period. In this way, the energy consumption of the condenser and reboiler of the methanol recovery unit can be expected to decrease by 61.5% and 37.6%, respectively. Second, a simulation-based multiobjective optimizaton framework is introduced to minimize the total heating and cooling costs and maximize the product purity, by integrating a rigorous process simulation model with an intelligent optimization algorithm. Given the characteristics of the MTP production process, three different operation scenarios, namely, the start of run, the designed operation condition, and the end of run, which correspond to different DME concentrations in the system, are covered. The approach is illustrated by its application to a real MTP plant, in which numerical results indicate that the proposed method is capable of identifying appealing operation options, and it can be utilized to support decision-making of the product separation of MTP plants.

Abstract:Separation and purification of carbon dioxide is current research hotspot. With increasing needs for environmental protection, traditional single separation techniques are difficult to meet these discharge specifications. Integration of multiple separation methods has gradually gained research attention. Separation and recovery of carbon dioxide in the integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) process was studied by process simulation and polynomial state equations were obtained for such system. Furthermore, a mathematical superstructure model of hybrid membrane - cryogenic flash distillation was established. Optimal separation sequence was found by targeting minimal annual cost at pre-set lower specification of product purity and recovery. The optimized process show excellent separating performance of membrane after flash configuration and multistage membrane structure. Compared to control process, optimized process not only guarantees product recovery and purity but also decreases total annual cost by almost 27%.

Abstract:Dimethyl carbonate is an environmentally benign and biodegradable chemical. It can be produced by a transesterification reaction of methanol with ethylene carbonate, coproducing another useful product, ethylene glycol. A reactive distillation column can be utilized for the complete conversion of ethylene carbonate with methanol in excess. The coproduct, ethylene glycol, is the bottom product while the top product of this reactive distillation column is a mixture of dimethyl carbonate and methanol close to the azeotropic composition. Abstract:Dimethyl carbonate is an important green chemical that has been widely used in the chemical industry. In the production of dimethyl carbonate, methanol oxidative carbonylation has been studied, but the conversion ratio of dimethyl carbonate using this method is too low, and the subsequent separation requires a large amount of energy due to methanol and dimethyl carbonate being azeotrope. In this paper, the strategy of "reaction instead of separation" is proposed. Based on this strategy, a novel process is developed to combine the production of DMC with that of dimethoxymethane (DMM) and dimethyl ether (DME). The co-production process was simulated using Aspen Plus software, and the product purity was up to 99.9%. The exergy analysis of the co-production process and the existing process was carried out. The exergy destruction and exergy efficiency were compared with those of the existing production processes. The results show that the exergy destruction of the co-production process is about 276% less than that of the single-production processes, and the exergy efficiencies in the developed co-production process are significantly improved. The utility loads of the co-production process are significantly lower than that of the single-production process. The developed co-production process increases the methanol conversion ratio to 95%, with a reduced energy requirement. It is proved that the developed co-production process can provide an advantageous option over the existing processes with improved energy efficiency and material savings. The strategy of "reaction instead of separation" is feasible. A new strategy is proposed for azeotrope separation.

Abstract:The design of the diethyl carbonate (DEC) production process has received much attention due to its key role as the oxygenated gasoline additive with much fewer environmental and health issues than methyl tert-butyl ether. In this study, two configurations including vapor recompression heat pump (VRHP)-reactive dividing wall column (RDWC) with or without the splitting top stream are investigated for DEC production to screen out the best VRHP sequence. Furthermore, a novel alternative approach of different pressure thermally coupled-RDWC (DPTC-RDWC) is comparatively proposed to achieve less capital and energy cost. The effects of pressure within stripping section of the RDWC on total annualized cost (TAC) and the temperature difference between the condenser and reboiler are studied. The results illustrate that the proposed optimum process produces DEC production with the purity of 99.8 mol% and significant reduction of TAC is achieved by 20.52% with 10 years payback period. Apart from that, carbon dioxide emission of the process is decreased by 33.74% compared to that through conventional RDWC. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Dimethyl carbonate has received more and more attentions as an organic solvent in electrolytes. Aiming at the problem of high energy consumption in the process of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) production, the root of the problem was analyzed by using exergy analysis, which provides a theoretical basis for the construction of energy-saving process. Firstly, the overall process of DMC production was constructed, including propylene carbonate (PC) synthesis, DMC synthesis, azeotrope separation and propylene glycol (PG) purification processes. Secondly, the conventional and advanced exergy analyses of the four proposed processes were carried out. The distributions of exergy and exergy destruction were obtained through conventional exergy analysis. The exergy destructions were further divided through advanced exergy analysis, and the avoidable parts were focused on. Based on the above analyses, the corresponding heat integration processes were proposed. Finally, the conventional processes and the heat integration processes were evaluated with the performance indicators of the exergy destruction, total annual cost (TAC), total energy consumption (TEC) and CO 2 emissions.

Abstract:The process of synthesizing syngas with the triple CO2 feeds is proposed to achieve an efficient use of CO2 that mitigates climate warming. Also, the amount of CO2 added in three locations as the variables of the process is optimized based on the CO2 conversion rate and the energy consumption per unit product (ECP) output flow rate by the genetic algorithm. The performances of the triple CO2 feeds in the methanol synthesis process had been evaluated by comparing with the traditional methanol production processes. To further reduce energy consumption, the irreversibility of each component and the locations of the inefficiency in the overall selected production process are studied on the basis of the exergy analysis. Pinch analysis is further used to find the optimal matching scheme. Compared with those of the proposed process, the energy consumption and the total exergy loss of the heat-integrated process are significantly reduced by 33.1 and 6.65%, respectively. Besides, the overall total annual cost is reduced by 10.1% and the cost of utilities is saved by 36.4%, which results in energy-saving.

Abstract:This study presents a novel process for producing diethyl carbonate and ethylene glycol directly from ethylene carbonate and ethanol through reactive distillation. Previous studies have mainly focused on investigating two reactive distillation systems with a pressure swing azeotropic separation for producing diethyl carbonate. By integrating the two separated reactive distillation systems into a single flowsheet, an energy-efficient process is enabled. Especially, the need for separating the azeotrope mixture is eliminated, and the primary feed of methanol is not required due to the reaction stoichiometry. Two design alternatives have been proposed based on the reactive distillation configuration and catalyst employed. The first design significantly reduces the amount of equipment needed by utilizing two reactive distillation columns, while the second design offers high energy savings, as all reactions occur in a single reactive distillation column. Compared to the conventional process of producing individual dimethyl and diethyl carbonate, both design alternatives result in total energy consumption reductions of 12% and 24%, respectively, as well as total annual cost reductions of 12% and 14%, respectively. Furthermore, both design alternatives demonstrate a reduction in CO 2 emissions by 15% and 11% respectively. Not only do these results demonstrate their economic viability, but they also indicate their effectiveness in CO 2 mitigation. From an industry perspective, the two proposed design alternatives can be effectively implemented for the direct production of diethyl carbonate and mono-ethylene glycol by intensifying the existing dimethyl carbonate production process.

Abstract:Dimethyl carbonate is an eco-friendly essential chemical that can be sustainably produced from CO2, which is available from carbon capture activities or can even be captured from the air. The rapid increase in dimethyl carbonate demand is driven by the fast growth of polycarbonates, solvent, pharmaceutical, and lithium-ion battery industries. Dimethyl carbonate can be produced from CO2 through various chemical pathways, but the most convenient route reported is the indirect alcoholysis of urea. Previous research used techniques such as heat integration and reactive distillation to reduce the energy use and costs, but the use of an excess of methanol in the trans-esterification step led to an energy intensive extractive distillation required to break the dimethyl carbonate-methanol azeotrope. This work shows that the production of dimethyl carbonate by indirect alcoholysis of urea can be improved by using an excess of propylene carbonate (instead of an excess of methanol), a neat feat that we showed it requires only 2.64 kW·h·kg−1 dimethyl carbonate in a reaction-separation-recycle process, and a reactive distillation column that effectively replaces two conventional distillation columns and the reactor for dimethyl carbonate synthesis. Therefore, less equipment is required, the methanol-dimethyl carbonate azeotrope does not need to be recycled, and the overall savings are higher. Moreover, we propose the use of a reactive distillation column in a heat integrated process to obtain high purity dimethyl carbonate (> 99.8 wt-%). The energy requirement is reduced by heat integration to just 1.25 kW·h·kg−1 dimethyl carbonate, which is about 52% lower than the reaction-separation-recycle process. To benefit from the energy savings, the dynamics and control of the process are provided for ±10% changes in the nominal rate of 32 ktpy dimethyl carbonate, and for uncertainties in reaction kinetics.

Abstract:In this study, a reactive distillation (RD) coupling pervaporation (PV) process was introduced to intensify the trans-esterification of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) with glycerol to produce glycerol carbonate. The yield of glycerol carbonate can be increased to more than 99.5% due to the timely removal of the by-product methanol. The PV module was used to recover DMC in the azeotrope (DMC/ methanol) from the RD column. In addition, another RD process using pressure swing distillation (PSD) to recover DMC was simulated as a comparison. The design variables of both processes were optimized to obtain the lowest total annual cost (TAC), and the greenhouse gas emissions of the two processes were compared. Ultimately, in comparison to the RD-PSD process, the TAC of the RD-PV process was reduced by 18.67%, and the emissions of CO2, SO2, and NOx were reduced by 29.34, 29.52, and 29.52%, respectively.

Abstract:The pressure-swing distillation traditionally used in the industry for separating dimethyl carbonate/methanol (DMC/MeOH) commonly suffers from high energy consumption and challenges in achieving high-purity separation due to the existence of pinch zone. Hence, energy-saving extractive distillation system is explored to achieve the high-purity separation of DMC/MeOH azeotrope. With the analyses of isovolatility and residue curve maps based on Wilson model calibrated by vapor–liquid equilibrium experimental data, an extractive distillation process using O-Xylene (OX) as the most suitable entrainer were modeled and experimentally validated. Furthermore, design, optimization, and comparison of an extractive distillation process and a pressure-swing distillation process for producing 10000 t DMC/a are investigated. It is demonstrated that the extractive distillation process presents significant economic and emission advantage, specifically with 34.66 % and 26.95 % reductions in operating cost (OC) and in total annual cost (TAC) respectively, as well as 42.53 % reduction in CO 2 emissions. This work should provide a feasible and promising approach to energy saving, low-carbon, and high-purity separation of DMC/MeOH azeotrope.

Abstract:Dimethyl carbonate (DMC) is a promising green chemical that plays a significant role in the sustainable chemical industry, clean energy technologies, and environmental protection. In response to the challenges of high equipment investment and energy consumption in the existing process for producing dimethyl carbonate through an ester exchange reaction using vinyl carbonate and methanol, a new reactive dividing-wall column (RDWC) process was developed. A new RDWC model was established by using Aspen Plus. The impact factors of reaction conditions such as reactant molar ratio, theoretical number of reaction stages, reaction pressure, and separation conditions such as theoretical number of common rectifying section, theoretical number of common stripping section, liquid phase distribution on both sides of the dividing wall, and side draw location were analyzed. A laboratory-scale new RDWC was designed and built referenced to the simulation results. The experimental research investigated key parameters affecting the reaction distillation column, such as the reaction zone height, reactant molar ratio, liquid phase distribution, reflux ratio, and vapor phase distribution on both sides of the dividing wall. This research laid the foundation for the scale-up designing of process parameters for the new RDWC. Under optimized conditions, the conversion rate of reactant EC (ethylene carbonate) exceeded 99.9%, the purity of methanol in the side draw was at least 99 wt %, and the purity of methanol ethylene glycol in the distillation column achieved a concentration greater than 99% (excluding the catalyst). The new method can greatly shorten the transesterification process (integrate the three towers in the original process into one) to produce dimethyl carbonate, save investment, and reduce energy consumption.
A near-zero carbon emission methanol production through CO2 hydrogenation integrated with renewable hydrogen: Process analysis, modification and evaluation

Abstract:Carbon dioxide hydrogenation to produce methanol has the potential to liberate humanity from its reliance on fossil fuels, while simultaneously reducing carbon dioxide and developing the economy. This paper focuses on the effect of catalyst type and the process conditions such as temperature, pressure, H2/CO2 feed ratio, and space velocity on CO2 conversion and CH3OH selectivity. The net generated CO in the reaction system results in the loss of CO2 and H2 to the purge gas, which reduces the utilization efficiency of carbon and hydrogen. The specially designed catalysts and processes with recycling can improve CO2 conversion and CH3OH selectivity, and the CO flow rate difference can be close to zero in the total recycling condition. Starting from these ideas, the two kinds of near-zero carbon emission processes with total recycling (respectively named total recycling process after flash separation and named total recycling process after stripping separation) are proposed. The utilization efficiency of carbon and hydrogen are similar in the two processes, but hot and cold utilities in the latter are 17.96% and 15.11% lower than in the former, respectively. Through the process integration between reaction heat and double-effect distillation, the energy consumption is further reduced in the total recycling process after stripping separation. The utilization efficiency of CO2 is 99.88% in the total recycling process after stripping separation with double-effect distillation of the light split/reverse configuration, and the proposed process just requires cold utility.

Abstract:Biomass chemical looping gasification technology is one of the essential ways to utilize abundant biomass resources. At the same time, dimethyl carbonate can replace phosgene as an environment-friendly organic material for the synthesis of polycarbonate. In this paper, a novel system coupling biomass chemical looping gasification with dimethyl carbonate synthesis with methanol as an intermediate is designed through microscopic mechanism analysis and process optimization. Firstly, reactive force field molecular dynamics simulation is performed to explore the reaction mechanism of biomass chemical looping gasification to determine the optimal gasification temperature range. Secondly, steady-state simulations of the process based on molecular dynamics simulation results are carried out to investigate the effects of temperature, steam to biomass ratio, and oxygen carrier to biomass ratio on the syngas yield and compositions. In addition, the main energy indicators of biomass chemical looping gasification process including lower heating value and cold gas efficiency are analyzed based on the above optimum parameters. Then, two synthesis stages are simulated and optimized with the following results obtained: the optimal temperature and pressure of methanol synthesis stage are 150 °C and 4 MPa; the optimal temperature and pressure of dimethyl carbonate synthesis stage are 140 °C and 0.3 MPa. Finally, the pre-separation-extraction-decantation process separates the mixture of dimethyl carbonate and methanol generated in the synthesis stage with 99.11% purity of dimethyl carbonate. Above results verify the feasibility of producing dimethyl carbonate from the perspective of multi-scale simulation and realize the multi-level utilization of biomass resources. Energy-Saving Exploration of Mixed Solvent Extractive Distillation Combined with Thermal Coupling or Heat Pump Technology for the Separation of an Azeotrope Containing Low-Carbon Alcohol

Abstract:Ternary extractive distillation (TED) is an effective and sustainable separation process for treating pharmaceutical wastewater containing ethyl acetate/isopropanol/water, corresponding to three binary azeotropes, to realize the recovery of ethyl acetate and isopropanol. Visual Basic software was used to optimize the extractive distillation process using a single solvent and mixed solvent in different proportions based on a sequential iterative optimization method, and the optimal mixture proportion (30% DMSO+70% EG) of the mixed solvent was determined. The economic and environmental performance of the extractive distillation process with a mixed solvent combined with partial thermal coupling technology was studied. The heat recovery within the separation process was further improved by the energy-efficient heat exchanger network synthesis (HENs) option. The economic and environmental performance of the mixed solvent extractive distillation process combined with heat pump technology was also explored. The results show that for the ternary extractive distillation process, the use of mixed solvent can significantly reduce energy consumption, which can lead to lower total annual cost (TAC) and CO2 emission. Compared with a conventional separation process with mixed solvent, the extractive distillation process combined with partial thermal coupling and heat pump technology further improves the economic and environmental performance. The TAC and CO2 emission of the mixed solvent separation process combined with partial thermal coupling technology were reduced by 12.183% and 19.869%, respectively. Abstract:1. The low temperature distillation process was optimized by reflux distillation. 2. The sensitivity of distillation parameters was analyzed by orthogonal experiment. 3. Energy consumption is reduced after process optimization and sensitivity analysis. Carbon capture utilization and storage‐enhanced oil recovery (EOR) is often considered the most promising technology for utilizing CO2. Cryogenic distillation is also viewed as the most reasonable separation option for handling CO2‐EOR gases, despite being an energy‐intensive process. The main challenge for this technology is energy loss. To overcome this challenge, one potential alternative is to optimize the system processes and parameters. This study proposes a new process to reduce distillation energy consumption by refluxing the distillate back to the distillation column. Operational parameter optimization was performed using the commercial simulator Aspen HYSYS for modeling and sensitivity analysis of process parameters using orthogonal experimental methods. The simulation results indicate that after optimization, the energy consumption in the distillation process decreased from 0.207 to 0.196 MJ kg−1, whereas the purity decreased slightly from 94.63 % to 94.52 %. However, the recovery increased from 97.8 % to 97.88 %, and the total energy consumption decreased from 0.772 to 0.761 MJ kg−1.

Abstract:In the current paper, a large‐scale dimethyl carbonate (DMC) production process from ethylene oxide (EO), CO2 and methanol, was simulated and optimized. Unlike most industrial processes of DMC production, the direct conversion of EO and CO2 to ethylene carbonate (EC) and EC transesterification to DMC was performed in a single‐reactor. The reaction volume and the reactor operating pressure were selected as decision variables. The optimal reaction volume and reactor pressure are 210 m3 and 50 bar, respectively. The key performance parameters e.g. conversion per pass and CO2 intensity were compared with conventional commercialized routes or novel promising processes in the literature. The CO2 intensity of the DMC production process from EO and methanol is 1.15 kg CO2/kg DMC produced.

Abstract:The invention discloses a CO2 trapping method combining dimethyl carbonate absorption and membrane desorption, belonging to the technical field of chemical engineering. The method comprises the following steps of: decarbonizing feed gas containing CO2 by dimethyl carbonate absorption; then carrying out two-stage throttling expansion and membrane desorption regeneration on CO2-absorbed absorbent rich liquor, and discharging CO2 gas generated by the throttling expansion and the membrane desorption out of the battery limit. Compared with a decarbonizing process of the inventor, which adopts the dimethyl carbonate as the absorbent, the new process of the dimethyl carbonate decarburization and the membrane desorption can reduce the comprehensive energy consumption by 5-20 percent. Compared with the propylene carbonate method maturely applied in industry at present, the energy consumption can be reduced by 30-40 percent; compared with the polyethylene glycol dimethyl ether method, the priceof a solvent is lower, and polymerization losses are reduced by 40-60 percent; and compared with the low-temperature methane swabbing process, the operating temperature is milder, and the equipment investment is reduced by 30-40 percent. The CO2 removing efficiency can reach 95 percent or above.

Abstract:The method for the methanol and the carbon dioxide to directly react to prepare the dimethyl carbonate suffers from several deficiencies,such as too strict operation conditions,complex Processing equipments,and low conversion rate of the methanol.A carbonabsorption solution is developed in this paper,in which the saturation concentration of the carbon dioxide reaches 0.528g/ml;the electrolysis is used to activate the carbon dioxide and in the electrolytic process the carbon dioxide is continuously added until saturation so as to obtain the electrochemical activation solution;the methyl iodide is used as the inducer,which is refluxed for 120 minutes with the methyl alcohol at 60℃,so as to obtain the dimethyl carbonate,with a purity of 99.0％,and the conversion rate of 99.5％ (measured based on the amount of the methanol).
