Abstract:In this paper, it is proved that every sufficiently large even integer can be represented as the sum of two squares of primes, two cubes of primes, two biquadrates of primes and 16 powers of 2. Furthermore, there are at least 5.313% odd integers that can be represented as one square of prime, one cube of prime and one biquadrate of prime. This result constitutes a refinement upon that of R. Zhang [8].

Abstract:Zhao established a curious congruence, i.e., for any prime p≥3,∑i+j+k=pi,j,k>01ijk≡−2Bp−3(modp). In this note we prove that for any prime p≥3 and positive integer r,∑i+j+k=pri,j,k∈Pp1ijk≡−2pr−1Bp−3(modpr), where Pn denotes the set of positive integers which are prime to n.

Abstract:Using completely elementary methods, we find all powers of 3 that can be written as the sum of at most twenty-two distinct powers of 2, as well as all powers of 2 that can be written as the sum of at most twenty-five distinct powers of 3. The latter result is connected to a conjecture of Erdős, namely, that 1, 4, and 256 are the only powers of 2 that can be written as a sum of distinct powers of 3. We present this work partly as a reminder that for certain exponential Diophantine equations, elementary techniques based on congruences can yield results that would be difficult or impossible to obtain with more advanced techniques involving, for example, linear forms in logarithms.

Abstract:Which integers can be written as a quotient of sums of distinct powers of three? We outline our first steps toward an answer to this question, beginning with a necessary and almost sufficient condition. Then we discuss an algorithm that indicates whether it is possible to represent a given integer as a quotient of sums of distinct powers of three. When the given integer is representable, this same algorithm generates all possible representations. We develop a categorization of representations based on their connections to $0,1$-polynomials and give a complete description of the types of representations for all integers up to 364. Finally, we discuss in detail the representations of 7, 22, 34, 64, and 100, as well as some infinite families of integers.

Abstract:Let $\chi$ be a primitive character modulo $q$, and let $\delta > 0$. Assuming that $\chi$ has large order $d$, for any $d$th root of unity $\alpha$ we obtain non-trivial upper bounds for the number of $n \leq x$ such that $\chi(n) = \alpha$, provided $x > q^{\delta}$. This improves upon a previous result of the first author by removing restrictions on $q$ and $d$. As a corollary, we deduce that if the largest prime factor of $d$ satisfies $P^+(d) \to \infty$ then the level set $\chi(n) = \alpha$ has $o(x)$ such solutions whenever $x > q^{\delta}$, for any fixed $\delta > 0$.

We also prove that $(-q;q)_n=\prod_{0<k\le n}(1+q^k)$ divides $S_{2n}(q)$ and the numerator of $C_{2n}(q)$; this extends Carlitz's result that $2^n$ divides the Sali\'e number $S_{2n}$ and the numerator of the Carlitz number $C_{2n}$. Our result on q-Sali\'e numbers implies a conjecture of Guo and Zeng.

The elements of L ( q ) are called D.H. Lehmer numbers. The main purpose of this paper is to prove that (under natural conditions) every sufficiently large integer can be expressed as the sum of three D.H. Lehmer numbers.
