Abstract:Assume that m ≥, p is a prime number, (m, p(p – 1)) = 1, −1 ∉ 〈p〉 ⊂ (ℤ/mℤ)* and[(ℤ/mℤ)* : 〈p〉] = 4. In this paper, we calculate the value of Gauss sum $G{\left( \chi \right)} = {\sum {_{{x \in \mathbb{F}^{ * }_{q} }} \chi {\left( x \right)}\zeta ^{{T{\left( x \right)}}}_{p} } }$over ${\mathbb F}$ q , where q = p f , $f = \frac{{\varphi {\left( m \right)}}}{4}$, χ is a multiplicative character of ${\mathbb F}$ q and T is the trace map from${\mathbb F}$ q to ${\mathbb F}$ p . Under our assumptions, G(χ) belongs to the decomposition field K of p in ℚ(ζ m ) and Kis an imaginary quartic abelian number field. When the Galois group Gal(K/ℚ) is cyclic, we havestudied this cyclic case in another paper: "Gauss sums of index four: (1) cyclic case" (accepted byActa Mathematica Sinica, 2003). In this paper we deal with the non–cyclic case.

Abstract:Let p be a prime number, N be a positive integer such that gcd(N, p) = 1, q = p f where f is the multiplicative order of p modulo N. Let χ be a primitive multiplicative character of order N over finite field $\mathbb{F}_q $. This paper studies the problem of explicit evaluation of Gauss sums G(χ) in the “index 2 case” (i.e. [(ℤ/Nℤ)*: 〈p〉] = 2). Firstly, the classification of the Gauss sums in the index 2 case is presented. Then, the explicit evaluation of Gauss sums G(χλ) (1 ⩽ λ ⩽ N − 1) in the index 2 case with order N being general even integer (i.e. N = 2 r · N 0, where r, N 0 are positive integers and N 0 ⩾ 3 is odd) is obtained. Thus, combining with the researches before, the problem of explicit evaluation of Gauss sums in the index 2 case is completely solved.

Abstract:Let $p$ be a prime number, $q=p^f$ for some positive integer $f$, $N$ be a positive integer such that $\gcd(N,p)=1$, and let $\k$ be a primitive multiplicative character of order $N$ over finite field $\fq$. This paper studies the problem of explicit evaluation of Gauss sums in "\textsl{index 2 case}" (i.e. $f=\f{\p(N)}{2}=[\zn:\pp]$, where $\p(\cd)$ is Euler function). Firstly, the classification of the Gauss sums in index 2 case is presented. Then, the explicit evaluation of Gauss sums $G(\k^\la) (1\laN-1)$ in index 2 case with order $N$ being general even integer (i.e. $N=2^{r}\cd N_0$ where $r,N_0$ are positive integers and $N_03$ is odd.) is obtained. Thus, the problem of explicit evaluation of Gauss sums in index 2 case is completely solved.

Abstract:Let $q=p^n$ be an odd prime power and let $\mathbb{F}_q$ be the finite field with $q$ elements. Let $\widehat{\mathbb{F}_q^{\times}}$ be the group of all multiplicative characters of $\mathbb{F}_q$ and let $\chi$ be a generator of $\widehat{\mathbb{F}_q^{\times}}$. In this paper, we investigate arithmetic properties of certain cyclotomic matrices involving nonzero squares over $\mathbb{F}_q$. For example, let $s_1,s_2,\cdots,s_{(q-1)/2}$ be all nonzero squares over $\mathbb{F}_q$. Sign or Root of Unity Ambiguities of Certain Gauss Sums

Abstract:Gauss sums play an important role in number theory and arithmetic geometry. The main objects of study in this paper are Gauss sums over the finite field with q elements. Recently, the problem of explicit evaluation of Gauss sums in the small index case has been studied in several papers. In the process of the evaluation, it is realized that a sign (or a root of unity) ambiguity unavoidably occurs. These papers determined the ambiguities by the congruences modulo L, where L is certain divisor of the order of Gauss sum. However, such method is unavailable in some situations. This paper presents a new method to determine the sign (root of unity) ambiguities of Gauss sums in the index 2 case and index 4 case, which is not only suitable for all the situations with q being odd, but also comparatively more efficient and uniform than the previous method.

Abstract:Galois rings and exponential sums over Galois rings have many applications in algebraic combinatorics, coding theory and cryptography. In this paper, we present explicit description on the Gauss sums and Jacobi sums over Galois ring GR(p 2, r), and show that the values of these sums can be reduced to the Gauss sums and Jacobi sums over finite field $\mathbb{F}_{p^r }$ for all non-trivial cases.

Abstract:Recently, the explicit evaluation of Gauss sums in the index 2 and 4 cases have been given in several papers (see [2,3,7,8]). In the course of evaluation, the sigh (or unit root) ambiguities are unavoidably occurred. This paper presents another method, different from [7] and [8], to determine the sigh (unit root) ambiguities of Gauss sums in the index 2 case, as well as the ones with odd order in the non-cyclic index 4 case. And we note that the method in this paper are more succinct and effective than [8] and [7].

Abstract:We study four sums including the Jacquet--Piatetski-Shapiro--Shalika, Flicker, Bump--Friedberg, and Jacquet--Shalika sums associated to irreducible cuspidal representations of general linear groups over finite fields. By computing explicitly, we relate Asai and Bump--Friedberg gamma factors over finite fields to those over nonarchimedean local fields through level zero supercuspidal representation. Via Deligne--Kazhdan close field theory, we prove that exterior square and Bump--Friedberg gamma factors agree with corresponding Artin gamma factors of their associated tamely ramified representations through local Langlands correspondence. We also deduce product formulae for Asai, Bump--Friedberg, and exterior square gamma factors in terms of Gauss sums. By combining these results, we examine Jacquet--Piatetski-Shapiro--Shalika, Flicker--Rallis, Jacquet--Shalika, and Friedberg--Jacquet periods and vectors and their connections to Rankin-Selberg, Asai, exterior square, and Bump-Friedberg gamma factors, respectively.

Abstract:The classical quadratic Gauss sum can be thought of as an exponential sum attached to a quadratic form on a cyclic group. We introduce an equivariant version of Gauss sum for arbitrary finite quadratic forms, which is an exponential sum twisted by the action of the orthogonal group. We prove that simple arithmetic formulae hold for some basic classes of quadratic forms. In application, such invariant appears in the dimension formula for certain vector-valued modular forms.

Abstract:We study the unflavored Schur indices in the $\mathcal{N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills theory for the $B_n,C_n,D_n, G_2$ gauge groups. We explore two methods, namely the character expansion method and the Fermi gas method, to efficiently compute the $q$-series expansion of the Schur indices to some high orders. Using the available data and the modular properties, we are able to fix the exact formulas for the general gauge groups up to some high ranks and discover some interesting new features. We also identify some empirical modular anomaly equations, but unlike the case of $A_n$ groups, they are quite complicated and not sufficiently useful to fix exact formulas for gauge groups of arbitrary rank.

Abstract:The main purpose of this article is to study the problem of calculating the 2 m th power mean of the generalized quadratic Gauss sums, and using the analytic method and an interesting combinatorial identity to give a sharp asymptotic formula for the 2 m th power mean. Thus, a new simple proof of this existing result [N. Bag, A. Rojas-León, and W. P. Zhang, On some conjectures on generalized quadratic Gauss sums and related problems , Finite Fields Appl. 86 (2023), 10213] is provided.

Abstract:The rationality of the elliptic Gauss sum coefficient is shown. The following is a specific case of our argument. Let f(u)=sl((1-i)\varpi u), where sl() is the Gauss' lemniscatic sine and \varpi=2.62205... is the real period of the elliptic curve y^2=x^3-x, so that f(u) is an elliptic function relative to the period lattice Z[i]. Let \pi be a primary prime of Z[i] such that norm(\pi)\equiv 13\mod 16. Let S be the quarter set mod \pi consisting of quartic residues. Let us define G(\pi):=\sum_{\nu\in S} f(\nu/\pi) and \tilde{\pi}:=\prod_{\nu\in S} f(\nu/\pi). The former G(\pi) is a typical example of elliptic Gauss sum; the latter is regarded as a canonical 4-th root of -\pi: (\tilde{\pi})^4=-\pi. Then we have Theorem: G(\pi)/(\tilde{\pi})^3 is a rational odd integer. G(\pi) appears naturally in the central value of Hecke L associated to the quartic residue character mod \pi, and our proof is based on the functional equation of L and an explicit formula of the root number. In fact, the latter is nothing but the Cassels-Matthews formula on the quartic Gauss sum.

Abstract:In this note we prove (under mild hypotheses) that $f$ is a nontrivial character of $\mathbb{F}_p$ if and only if the Fourier transform of $f$ has magnitude 1 somewhere in $\mathbb{F}_p^\times$. This implies a converse to a theorem of Gauss on the magnitude of the Gauss sum, in addition to other consequences.

Abstract:We generalize Burgess' results on partial Gaussian sums to arbitrary finite fields. The main ingredients are the classical method of amplification, two deep results on multiplicative energy for subsets in finite fields which are obtained respectively by the tools from additive combinatorics and geometry of numbers, and a technique of Chamizo for treating the difficulty caused by additive character. Our results include the recent works on character sums in finite fields by M.-C. Chang and S. V. Konyagin.

Power sum elements in the $G_2$ skein algebra

Abstract:We study the skein algebras of surfaces associated to the exceptional Lie group $G_2,$ using Kuperberg webs. We identify two 2-variable polynomials, $P_n(x,y)$ and $Q_n(x,y),$ and use threading operations along knots to construct a family of central elements in the $G_2$ skein algebra of a surface, $\mathcal{S}_q^{G_2}(\Sigma),$ when the quantum parameter $q$ is a $2n\text{-th}$ root of unity. We verify these elements are central using elementary skein-theoretic arguments. We also obtain a result about the uniqueness of the so-called transparent polynomials $P_n$ and $Q_n.$ Our methods involve a detailed study of the skein modules of the annulus and the twice-marked annulus.
