Abstract:MAX phases are wildly renowned for incorporating metallic and ceramic properties into a single compound. They are typically prepared by high-temperature solid-state synthesis methods leading to polycrystalline bulk materials, mostly in the form of powders or pellets. However, sol gel chemistry has been shown to add more flexibility to the shape, morphology, and microstructure of selected MAX phases (as demonstrated for Cr2GaC). Here, we extend this concept through simultaneous synthesis and dispersion of MAX phase Cr2GaC into microporous (amorphous) carbon, that is intrinsically formed by the gelling agent. Due to the enhanced processability of the initial reaction mixture, differently sized Cr2GaC MAX phase composite microspheres can be produced (controllable by the nozzle size used to form the precursor microspheres). Furthermore, we study the influence of the heating method, furnace and microwave heating, on the resulting products. Aside from the structure and microstructure, the porosity and specific surface area of the microsphere composites were characterized utilizing gas sorption analysis. The carbonaceous Cr2GaC spheres were identified to exhibit Type IV isotherm behavior and a hysteresis type of H2(a). Micropore surface areas ranged from 220-416 m2/g. With this sol gel approach, we were therefore able to synthesize Cr2GaC MAX phase composite microspheres with a maximum BET specific surface area of 616 m2/g, which exceeds that of the respective bulk MAX phases.
