Abstract:Polycrystalline Y2CoGe4O12 has been prepared by standard ceramic methods. The crystal structure (space group P4/nbm; a=9.8465(2), c=4.92986(9)Å) consists of metal-rich layers separated from each other by Ge4O12 groups comprised of four corner-sharing GeO4 tetrahedra. Two cation sites lie within the layers; an eight-coordinate site occupied by yttrium and a six-coordinate site occupied by a 1:1 disordered distribution of yttrium and cobalt. Neutron diffraction revealed two-fold disorder on the oxide sublattice; this has been elucidated using Co K-edge EXAFS spectroscopy. The availability of two sites allows each oxide ion to accommodate the coordination preferences of its single Co/Y neighbour; the GeO4 tetrahedra distort to absorb any consequent strain. The octahedron of anions around each Co2+ cation shows a pseudo-tetragonal distortion with a strain (Co–O)eq–(Co–O)ax/(Co–O)eq=−0.173. This results in an unusually large effective magnetic moment of 6.05µB per Co2+ cation.

Abstract:YbFe2O4-type layered oxides have attracted tremendous interesting due to the unique crystal comprises two distinct geometrically frustrated triangular cation-sublattices. Herein, a series of YbFe2O4-type materials In2Zn3-xCoxGeO8 (0 ≤ x ≤ 3) were rationally designed and experimentally synthesized for the first time. The crystal structures of In2Zn3-xCoxGeO8 were investigated comprehensively by Rietveld refinements against high-resolution monochromatic Cu Kα1 XRD data. Zn2+, Co2+, and Ge4+ cations are distributed randomly on the [MO]2 bilayer and possess trigonal bipyramid (TBP) coordination geometry. Owings to Co2+ has an electron unpaired d_(z^2 ) orbital and a larger electronegativity than Zn2+, Co2+-to-Zn2+ equivalent substitution in In2Zn3-xCoxGeO8 causes more compact MO5-TBPs, which is the origin of anisotropic lattice expansion and contraction along the a and c axes, respectively. The Co2+ moments in the [MO]2 bilayer are AFM coupled strongly and geometrically frustrated, therefore resulting in a spin-glass magnetic transition at around Tg = 20 K for In2ZnCo2GeO8. While a long-range AFM ordering is established for In2Co3GeO8 with a Néel temperature of 53 K, attributed to the significantly enhanced AFM interactions and increased In3+/Co2+ anti-site disordering, as compared to those in In2ZnCo2GeO8.

Structural and Magnetic properties of Ge0.5Mn0.5Co2O4 using neutron diffraction

Abstract:The structural and magnetic properties of Ge0.5Mn0.5Co2O4 (GMCO) have been investigated in detail utilizing neutron powder diffraction (NPD), x-ray diffraction (XRD), DC magnetometry, and heat capacity analysis and compared with GeCo2O4. Despite both compounds exhibiting a cubic structure at room temperature, a substantial difference on low temperature structural properties have been observed for GMCO, indicating the effect of Mn substitution on crystal structure. The magnetic and heat capacity data reveal a ferrimagnetic ordering around 108 K in GMCO. A minor secondary phase is confirmed which undergoes long range AFM ordering at further lower temperatures. This secondary phase remains undetected in XRD due to identical lattice parameters. Furthermore, the analysis of heat capacity data indicates a broadening of the high-temperature transition, attributing to the short-range correlation persisting up to higher temperatures. The estimated magnetic entropy amounts is 63% of the value expected for GMCO. The missing entropy is likely linked with the short-range magnetic correlations persisting well above the transition temperature. Cation distribution at the A and B sites has been estimated in GMCO using NPD. Magnetic structures are also confirmed in the main phase as well as in the secondary phase using NPD analysis. The high-temperature transition corresponds to the ferrimagnetic ordering of A and B site cations in the main phase. A collinear ferrimagnetic arrangement of A and B site spins aligned parallel to c axis is observed. The average values of A and B site moments in the ferrimagnetic phase at 5 K are 2.31(3) and 1.82(3)mB, respectively, with the temperature dependence of moments following the expected power law behavior. The low-temperature ordering is attributed to the antiferromagnetic ordering of B site ions associated with the secondary phase, something similar to GeCo2O4.

Abstract:Co2.73Fe0.27O4 nano-particles were synthesized using the heat-decomposition method followed by annealing treatment. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis shows that most of the peaks are close to the data for antiferromagnetic Co3O4, while weak peaks of CoFe2O4 are also detected. It indicates that the prepared particles can be reckoned as a composite with a small size of the FM particles embed in a large thickness of the AFM matrix. The magnetic hysteresis loops of Co(2.73)Fe(0.27)O4 powders were measured at 10 K by using the zero-field cooling (ZFC) and field cooling (FC) procedures and show negative and downward shifts, and the shifts finally disappear when temperature increases to 200 K. We suggest that exchange bias effect in Co2.73Fe0.27O4 is mainly related with the exchange interactions at the interfaces between the FM CoFe2O4 nano-particles and the frozen spins around them.

Abstract:Cobalt substitution effects in the single phase spin ladder compounds Sr14-xCaxCu24-yCoyO41 was studied. The crystal structure, the resistivity and the thermoelectric power change with various values y(Co) were researched. All lattice parameters of Sr14-xCaxCu24-yCoyO41 increase almost linearly with the increase in y(Co). T dependence of the electrical resistivity of all samples is semiconducting. The value of the resistivity increases with the increase of cobalt concentration. The resistivities can be fit by the thermal active equation rho = rho(0) exp(Delta/k(B)T) except for the sample of x=9, y=0. Through thermoelectric power measurements, we find that the sample of x=9, y=0 exhibit metallic behavior while the others exhibit semiconductive behavior. Cobalt substitution induces disorder and electron. Lattice constants increasing make the holes transfer from the better conductive spin ladder to the chain. Those lead to the increase of activation energy, resistivity, and thermoelectric power.

Abstract:Magnetic and structural properties of YCo12-xTix compounds have been investigated ly x-ray diffraction and magnetic measurements. X-ray diffraction patterns of aligned powder samples indicate that the easy magnetization direction at room temperature is along the c-axis for all the compounds. The lattice parameters increase monotonously while Curie temperature Te decreases with increasing Ti content. It was found that all the compounds investigated are strong ferromagnets by analysis of magnetic moments using a magnetic valence model. The values of;anisotropy fields B-a at room temperature and 1.5 K decrease with increasing x. The easy-axis anisotropy of the YCo12-xTix compounds is mainly contributed by the Co atoms at Si sites according do the individual-site-anisotropy model.

Abstract:Polycrystalline samples, prepared by a solid-state route, of compositions in the solid solution CeMn2-xCoxGe4O12 (x = 0.0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0) were characterized by X-ray diffraction, neutron diffraction, and magnetometry. They adopt space group P4/nbm with a ≈ 9.78 and c ≈ 4.85 Å and become anti-ferromagnetic (x = 0.0, 1.5, 2.0) or weakly ferromagnetic (x = 0.5, 1.0) at 4.2 ≤ T ≤ 7.6 K. The ordered moments lie along [001] when x = 0.0 and in the (001) plane otherwise. The unit cell doubles along [001] when x = 1.5 and 2.0 order anti-ferromagnetically, but the doubling is lost when a first-order metamagnetic transition to weak ferromagnetism occurs on the application of a 10 kOe magnetic field. The ordered moments at 1.6 K for x = 0.0 and 2.0 are 4.61(2) and 2.58(2) μB, respectively; the corresponding effective moments in the paramagnetic phase are 5.91 and 5.36 μB.

Abstract:Magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of polycrystalline Gd3Co4Ge13 (Cubic, Yb3Rh4Sn13-type, Space group Pm-3n, No. 223, cP40) have been studied by carrying out dc magnetization measurements in applied magnetic fields up to 140 kOe. The compound Gd3Co4Ge13 orders antiferromagnetically at 9 K (TN). The antiferromagnetism appears to be weak and with increasing applied magnetic fields, ferromagnetic interactions become dominant. This field-induced antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic state that is marked as a change from inverse to normal magnetocaloric effect in the isothermal magnetic entropy change vs temperature plot around TN. At 2 K, the magnetization shows a tendency toward saturation in applied magnetic field and a magnetic moment of 5.3 μB per Gd3+ is obtained in 140 kOe field.

Abstract:The anisotropy in electrical transport and thermal behavior of single crystalline R$_{2}$CoGa$_{8}$ series of compounds is presented. These compounds crystallize in a tetragonal structure with space gropup P4/mmm. The nonmagnetic counterparts of the series namely Y$_{2}$CoGa$_{8}$ and Lu$_{2}$CoGa$_{8}$show a behavior consistent with the low density of states at the fermi level. In Y$_{2}$CoGa$_{8}$, a possibility of charge density wave transition is observed at $\approx$ 30 K. Gd$_{2}$CoGa$_{8}$ and Er$_{2}$CoGa$_{8}$ show a presence of short range correlation above the magnetic ordering temperature of the compound. In case of Gd$_{2}$CoGa$_{8}$, the magnetoresistance exhibits a significant anisotropy for current parallel to {[}100{]} and {[}001{]} directions. Compounds with other magnetic rare earths (R = Tb, Dy, Ho and Tm) show the normal expected magnetic behavior whereas Dy$_{2}$CoGa$_{8}$ exhibits the possibility of charge density wave (CDW) transition at approximately same temperature as that of Y$_{2}$CoGa$_{8}$. The thermal property of these compounds is analysed on the basis of crystalline electric field (CEF) calculations.

Abstract:Y Co0.5Fe0.5O3, in a structure of perovskite, has been successfully prepared with citrate precursors at 950-1100 °C in air by the sol-gel method. The X-ray diffraction patterns show that the samples are orthorhombic within the space group Pnma, where the Co and Fe ions are disordered at the 4b crystallographic sites. The crystal structure refinement undertaken by the Rietveld method has shown that the distortion of Co(Fe)O6 octahedra are large, where the ratio of Co/Fe-O bonding length along a axis to that in the bc plane is about 1.07. Such a large crystal lattice distortion implies a strong lattice-magnetism coupling, which may be utilized in the magnetoelectric devices. Magnetic measurement indicates that the Y Co0.5Fe0.5O3 is antiferromagnetic but showing weak ferromagnetism. We find that Fe3+ ions are in high-spin states, while Co3+ ions are in low-spin states which do not contribute to the magnetism. Both Fe3+ and Co3+ ions are not Jahn-Teller activated although the lattice distortion is large.
CoX2Y4: A Family of Two-Dimensional Magnets with Versatile Magnetic Order

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials offer a promising platform for nanoscale spintronics and for exploration of novel physical phenomena. Here, we predict a diverse range of magnetic orders in cobalt-based 2D single septuple layers CoX2Y4, namely, CoBi2Te4, CoBi2Se2Te2, CoBi2Se4, and CoSb2Te4. Notably, CoBi2Te4 presents intrinsic non-collinear antiferromagnetism (AFM), while the others display collinear AFM. The emergence of AFM in all CoX2Y4 materials is attributed to the antiferromagnetic 90 degrees Co-Te(Se)-Co superexchange coupling. The origin of non-collinear/collinear orders lies in competing Heisenberg exchange interactions within the Co triangular lattice. A pivotal factor governing the non-collinear order of CoBi2Te4 is the vanishingly small ratio of exchange coupling between next-nearest neighbour Co and the nearest neighbour Co (J(2)/J(1) similar to 0.01). Furthermore, our investigation into strain effects on CoX2Y4 lattices demonstrates the tunability of the magnetic state of CoSb2Te4 from collinear to non-collinear. Our prediction of the unique non-collinear AFM in 2D suggests the potential for observing extraordinary magnetic phenomena in 2D, including non-collinear scattering and magnetic domain walls.
Unusual Ground State Properties of the Kondo-Lattice Compound Yb2Ir3Ge5

Abstract:We report sample preparation, structure, electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity studies of a new compound Yb$_2$Ir$_3$Ge$_5$. We find that this compound crystallizes in an orthorhombic structure with a space group PMMN unlike the compound Ce$_2$Ir$_3$Ge$_5$ which crystallizes in the tetragonal IBAM (U$_2$Co$_3$Si$_5$ type) structure. Our resistivity measurements indicate that the compound Yb$_2$Ir$_3$Ge$_5$ behaves like a typical Kondo lattice system with no ordering down to 0.4 K. However, a Curie-Weiss fit of the inverse magnetic susceptibility above 100 K gives an effective moment of only 3.66 $\mu$$_B$ which is considerably less than the theoretical value of 4.54 $\mu$$_B$ for magnetic Yb$^3+$ ions. The value of $\theta_{P}$ = -15.19 K is also considerably higher indicating the presence of strong hybridization. An upturn in the low temperature heat capacity gives an indication that the system may order magnetically just below the lowest temperature of our heat capacity measurements (0.4 K). The structure contains two sites for Yb ions and the present investigation suggests that Yb may be trivalent in one site while it may be significantly lower (close to divalent) in the other.

Abstract:DyCuxGa2-x (x = 0-2.0) compounds have been synthesized; meanwhile, their crystal structure and magnetic properties have been investigated by X-ray diffraction and magnetic measurements. The result shows that the continuous solid-solution series crystallize in three phases, with the structure types of AlB2 (x = 0-0.2), DyCuGe (x = 0.3-0.6) and CeCu2 (x = 0.7-2.0), respectively. The main reason to form the three structure types is considered to be the average atomic radius ratio of R to Cu/Ga. Magnetic-ordering transition of the compounds with x = 0.2-0.6 takes place at about 20 K and 113 K, while those of other compounds only takes place at about 20 K, which is attributed to the change of the near Dy-Dy distances and the ordered substitution of Ga by Cu. Abstract:The magnetic and dielectric properties of a Y2MnCoO6 ceramic have been investigated. The x-ray diffraction pattern shows that the sample has the monoclinic structure (space group P21/n). Magnetic measurements show that Y2MnCoO6 becomes ferromagnetic (FM) below T C ~75 K. More importantly, the temperature dependence of magnetization (zero field cooled and field cooled behavior) and the M(H) behavior are indicative of spin-glass-like behavior of Y2MnCoO6, which may be caused by competition between the FM and antiferromagnetic interaction. Dielectric relaxor behavior at low temperature is also observed; this arises from dipolar effects associated with the charge ordering of Co2+ and Mn4+.

Abstract:We investigate the magnetoelectric effect in Sr2CoGe2O7, which has a two-dimensional magnetic interaction between Co ions in the ab plane. This compound shows a weak magnetism and field-induced magnetic transition below the temperature of 7 K. It does not exhibit electric polarization under zero magnetic field. However, by applying an external magnetic field, the electric polarization is induced around its Néel temperature and increases with increasing magnetic field. The induced electric polarization in Sr2CoGe2O7 is almost two orders of magnitude smaller than that of Ba2CoGe2O7. This result suggests that the different ionic radius of the strontium and the barium anion plays a key role in determining the property of electric polarization. The origins of electric polarization and magnetoelectric effect are discussed.

Abstract:We have performed non-resonant x-ray diffraction, resonant soft and hard x-ray magnetic diffraction, soft x-ray absorption and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements to clarify the electronic and magnetic states of the Co3+ ions in GdBaCo2O5.5. Our data are consistent with a 3+ Py Co HS state at the pyramidal sites and a 3+ Oc Co LS state at the octahedral sites. The structural distortion, with a doubling of the a axis (2ap x 2ap x 2ap cell), shows alternating elongations and contractions of the pyramids and indicates that the metal-insulator transition is associated with orbital order in the t2g orbitals of the 3+ Py Co HS state. This distortion corresponds to an alternating ordering of xz and yz orbitals along the a and c axes for the 3+ Py Co . The orbital ordering and pyramidal distortion lead to deformation of the octahedra, but the 3+ Oc Co LS state does not allow an orbital order to occur for the 3+ Oc Co ions. The soft x-ray magnetic diffraction results indicate that the magnetic moments are aligned in the ab plane but are not parallel to the crystallographic a or b axes. The orbital order and the doubling of the magnetic unit cell along the c axis support a non-collinear magnetic structure. The x-ray magnetic circular dichroism data indicate that there is a large orbital magnetic contribution to the total ordered Co moment.

Abstract:The Co-Ge phase diagram has been reinvestigated with 20 decisive alloys over the whole composition range by means of differential scanning calorimeter, x-ray diffraction, optical microscopy and electron probe microanalysis. The liquidus lines in Co-rich and Ge-rich portions have been measured for the first time. The compound Co 3 Ge has been determined to be an ordered fcc-cubic phase and observed to be stable within the temperature range of about 600-750 °C. The previously reported Co 5 Ge 2 and Co 4 Ge phases were not found in the present work, and instead Co 2 Ge was confirmed to be stable at 600 °C. The system contains one congruent melting compound βCo 5 Ge 3 and three incongruent melting phases ε(Co), CoGe and CoGe 2 . Three compounds Co 3 Ge, Co 2 Ge and Co 5 Ge 7 are formed via peritectoid reactions. A revised Co-Ge phase diagram is presented based on the present experimental results and reliable literature data.
Low-temperature giant coercivity in Co$_{6.2}$Ga$_{3.8-x}$Ge$_{x}$ ($x$=2.4 to 3.2)

Abstract:The observation of giant coercivity exceeding 20 kOe at low temperatures in several transition-metal-based compounds has attracted significant attention from a fundamental perspective. This research is also relevant to developing rare-earth-free permanent magnets, wherein cobalt is one of the primary elements used. To facilitate easy fabrication, rare-earth-free and Co-based inorganic bulk magnets that exhibit giant coercivity are highly demanded but rarely reported. Herein, we report the observation of low-temperature giant coercivity in polycrystalline metallic Co$_{6.2}$Ga$_{3.8-x}$Ge$_{x}$ ($x$=2.4 to 3.2) with the hexagonal Fe$_{13}$Ge$_{8}$-type structure composed of Kagome and triangular lattices. As the Ge content $x$ decreases from 3.2, the magnetic ground state changes from ferrimagnetism to ferromagnetism at $x$=2.6. In the ferrimagnetic state, we observed a signature of spin frustration arising from the Kagome and/or triangular lattices of Co atoms. The ferromagnetic ordering temperatures for the $x$=2.6 and 2.4 samples are 46 K and 60 K, respectively. The coercive fields rapidly increase upon cooling and reach values of 26 kOe and 44 kOe in the $x$=2.6 and 2.4 samples, respectively, at 2 K.

Abstract:A new layered compound within the nominal composition range of Y2SrCo2−xCuxO6.5(0.5<x<0.7) was isolated. By indexing its X-ray diffraction patterns, we obtained cell parameters of a = 5.423Å, b = 10.717Å, c = 19.968Å for the single phase sample (x=0.6). From the cell parameters and the XRD peak intensities, it was found that the title compound is isostructural with Y2SrCuFeO6.5. The as-prepared samples were semiconductive and showed ferromagnetic behavior with a Curie temperature(Tc) of 382K.
