Abstract:Uniform charged spherical sphere generated by the electric field in the sphere inside and outside electric field strength distribution is very simple, but it is difficult to obtain the spherical surface of the electric field strength with Gauss’s law . This article introduced the integral calculation and deductive analytic two methods, using field strength’s principle of superposition to calculate the electric field strength value of the charged spherical surface, to obtain a complete electric field strength distribution of the uniformly charged spherical generated electric field . According to the investigation, the present study is the first example.

Abstract:By using the generalized version of the Shell Theorem analytical equations are derived to calculate the electric energy of a charged sphere and the field energy of the electrolyte inside and around the sphere. These electric energies are calculated as a function of the ion concentration of the electrolyte. The work needed to build up the charged sphere (i.e. the total charge-charge interaction energy) decreases with increasing ion concentration of the electrolyte because of the screening effect of the electrolyte on the charge-charge interaction. The energy needed to build up the charged sphere appears as sum of the field energy of the electrolyte and the polarization energy of the electrolyte ions. At zero ion concentration the field energy of the electrolyte is equal with the charge-charge interaction energy, while the polarization energy is zero. At high ion concentrations 50% of the charge-charge interaction energy appears as the polarization energy of ions, 25% as the field energy of the electrolyte inside the sphere and 25% as the field energy of the electrolyte around the sphere.

Abstract:In this paper, the electromagnetic field of a horizontal infinitely long magnetic line source over the dielectric-coated earth is treated analytically, and the complete approximate solution for the radiated field under the far-field conditions is outlined. The total field is composed of four modes: the direct wave, the ideal reflected wave or image wave, the trapped surface wave, and the lateral wave. In particular, the complete analytical formulas are obtained for both the trapped surface wave and the lateral wave. The trapped surface wave is determined by the sum of residues of the poles. When the infinitely long magnetic line source or the observation point is away from the planar surface of the dielectric-coated earth, the trapped surface wave decreases exponentially with height, and the total field is determined primarily by the lateral wave. When the conductivity of the earth is large, and both the infinitely long magnetic line source and the observation point are on or close to the air-dielectric boundary, the total field is determined primarily by the trapped surface wave.

Abstract:The electrostatic force on a spherical particle near a planar surface is calculated for the cases of a uniform electric field applied in either normal or tangential direction to the surface. The particle and suspending media are assumed to be weakly conducting, so that that the leaky dielectric model applies. The Laplace equation for the electric potential is solved in bipolar coordinate system and the potential is obtained in terms of a series expansion of Legendre polynomials. The force on the particle is calculated using the Maxwell tensor. We find that in the case of normal electric field, which corresponds to a particle near an electrode, the force is always attractive but at a given separation it varies nontrivially with particle-suspending medium conductivity ratio; the force on a particle that is more conducting than the suspending medium is much larger compared to the force on a particle less conducing than the suspending medium. In the case of tangential electric field, which corresponds to a particle near an insulating boundary, the force is always repulsive.

Abstract:Scattering characteristics of electromagnetic waves are analyzed by a uniformly charged coated sphere using the Lorenz -Mie theory. Numerical calculations are presented for charges on the surfaces of the interior core and exterior shell, respectively. When the surfaces are charged, the extinction efficiencies are affected by the radius ratio of the two layers and the surface potential. The scattering characteristics are further simplified to Rayleigh scattering using the Taylor expansion in a regime where scattering is significantly influenced by charges. The Rayleigh scattering in this regime can replace the analytical solution derived from the Lorenz-Mie theory. (c) 2021 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The current continuity equation is usually applied to solve DC electric field distribution when there is inhomogeneous material conductivity due to temperature gradient or multi-layer dielectrics. However, in the presence of charge accumulation, which may result from the process of electrode injection, impurity ionisation or charge trapping, the material conductivity is in tangled relationship with local field strength, and the current continuity equation can be hardly applied due to the ignorance of conductivity distribution. Thus, quantitative analysis on the effect of space (surface) charge for DC apparatus with inhomogeneous material conductivity has been a difficult problem, which requires a complicated physical model to solve. This paper has proposed a simple method to compute the synergetic influence of inhomogeneous conductivity and the space charge on the DC field distribution; through assigning bulk (interface) charge as functions of local material conductivity and field strength, the effect of inhomogeneous conductivity can be incorporated in Gauss' law and the space charge accumulation can be further included in the equation. The effect of space (surface) charge on electric field distribution in DC apparatus with temperature gradient as well as multiple-layer dielectrics is simulated through the proposed method, which shows that the method has offered a convenient approach for investigating the effect of charge accumulation on DC field distribution under various insulation structure and working conditions.

Abstract:The potential energy interaction between a system of N -charged particles and a spherical conducting surface is obtained by means of direct integration of the electrostatic energy density. Making use of the image charge method, we show that the full potential can be split into a sum of one-body central potentials and two-body contributions related to particle–particle and particle–sphere interactions. Analytical expressions are provided for all contributions. The spherical surface of radius R can be considered to correspond to a cavity inside a conductor or a metallic ball, with two different electric conditions, namely the grounded and isolated charged cases. By taking the limit R → ∞ of the spherical case, one recovers the image potential for an N -charged particle system interacting with a planar conductor. While the final results for the potential do not appear as unexpected, the provided analytical expressions should help in diverse physical applications modelled by a number of charged particles interacting close to a spherical surface.

Abstract:A laboratory experiment often performed in an introductory electricity and magnetism course involves the mapping of equipotential lines on a conductive sheet between two objects at different potentials. In this article, we describe how we have expanded this experiment so that it can be used to illustrate the electrostatic properties of conductors. Different configurations of electrodes can be used to show that the electric field is zero inside a conductor as well as within a cavity, the electric field is perpendicular to conducting surfaces, and the charge distribution on conducting surfaces can vary.

Abstract:This is an investigation into the exact forms of images of point charges in 2D conducting ellipses and 3D prolate spheroids. For an ellipse with exterior point source, we compare two previous expressions for the analytic continuation inside the ellipse down to the focal line, the location of the image charge. For an interior source, we discover a sequence of image charges lying outside. For a point source close the surface of a spheroid, series solutions for the potential diverge in a region that encompasses the singularities of the continuation of the reflected potential inside the spheroid. We uncover an image system for a point charge on the axis of a prolate spheroid that extends from the focal segment somewhat further up the axis. For an off axis charge we find a new approximate image charge. For a point charge at the center of the spheroid, the image singularity is found to lie on an infinitely wide, flat sheet with a hole around the spheroid. For a point charge located anywhere inside the spheroid, we find two new approximate image charge solutions, a point charge in real space which applies when source lies near the surface, or a point charge in complex space which projects as a ring in the real space which applies when the source lies near the rotation axis. When the point charge lies exactly on a focal point, a multipole of order 1/2 is an ideal image approximation.

Abstract:In this paper, starting from the Bogoliubov-Born-Green-Yvon equations of the liquid-state theory, we formulate two equivalent approaches for the calculation of the total density profile and of the charge density profile of ionic fluids near nonplanar charged surfaces. In the framework of these approaches, we establish exact conditions, that a particular point of these profiles should satisfy, in the form of contact theorems. These contact theorems for the total density profile and the charge density profile are obtained by direct integration of a system of equations derived from the Bogoliubov-Born-Green-Yvon equations. The contact theorems for both profiles have nonlocal character. It is shown that the contact value of the total density profile for uncharged surfaces is characterized by the bulk pressure and the surface tension. The contact theorems are applied to the cases of spherical and cylindrical surfaces. It is shown that the contact theorem for the total density profile coincides with the recent results obtained by W. Silvester-Alcantara, D. Henderson and L.B. Bhuiyan Mol. Phys., 113, 3403, 2015

Abstract:As an integrative and insightful example for undergraduates learning about electrostatics, we discuss how to use symmetry, Coulomb's law, superposition, Gauss's law, and visualization to understand the electric field E(x,y,z) produced by a uniformly charged cubic shell. We first discuss how to deduce qualitatively, using freshman-level physics, the perhaps surprising fact that the interior electric field is nonzero and has a complex structure, pointing inwards from the middle of each face of the shell and pointing outwards towards each edge and corner. We then discuss how to understand the quantitative features of the electric field by plotting an analytical expression for E along symmetry lines and on symmetry surfaces of the shell.

Abstract:We theoretically investigate the dust charging in the sheath of an electronegative plasma, by using a single dust grain model based on a previous sheath structure [Chin. Phys. Lett 20 (2003) 1537] in which cold positive ions and hot negative ions have been assumed. It is found that dust grains are first charged negatively at the sheath edge and then begin to be charged positively in the sheath. Moreover, both the temperature ratio of electrons to negative ions and the density ratio of negative ions to positive ions have effects on the neutral point of the dust charge.

Abstract:A geometrical approach to calculate the electric field due to a uniformly charged rod is presented. The result is surprisingly simple and elegant. Using pure geometrical quantities like length and angle, the direction of the electric field in this charge configuration can be graphically defined. Understanding and application of this result can lead to a deeper appreciation of symmetry in a seemingly unsymmetric system.

Abstract:Realistic charged macromolecules are characterized by discrete (rather than homogeneous) charge distributions. We investigate the effects of surface charge discretization on the counterion distribution at the level of mean-field theory using a two-state model. Both planar and cylindrical geometries are considered; for the latter case, we compare our results to numerical solutions of the full Poisson-Boltzmann equation. We find that the discretization of the surface charge can cause enhanced localization of the counterions near the surface; for charged cylinders, counterion condensation can exceed Oosawa-Manning condensation.

Abstract:As an integrative and insightful example for undergraduates learning about electrostatics, we discuss how to use symmetry, Coulomb's Law, superposition, Gauss's law, and visualization to understand the electric field produced by a non-conducting cubic surface that is covered with a uniform surface charge density. We first discuss how to deduce qualitatively, using only elementary physics, the surprising fact that the electric field inside the cubic surface is nonzero and has a complex structure, pointing inwards towards the cube center from the midface of each cube and pointing outwards towards each edge and corner. We then discuss how to understand the quantitative features of the electric field by plotting an analytical expression for E along symmetry lines and on symmetry surfaces. This example would be a good choice for group problem solving in a recitation or flipped classroom.

Abstract:The boundary effect on the electrophoresis of a soft spherical particle, which comprises a rigid core and a porous layer, along the axis of a cylindrical pore is analyzed under the conditions of low surface potential and weak applied electric field. The porous layer of the particle is of charge-regulated nature where the distribution of fixed charge depends on the degree of dissociation/association reaction of the ionizable function groups contained in the porous layer. The pore might be charged, implying that the effect of electroosmotic flow can play a role. The influences of the nature of the porous layer of a particle, the thickness of the double layer, the pH of the bulk liquid, and the relative size of a pore on the electrophoretic behavior of the particle are investigated. Several unexpected and interesting results are obtained. For instance, if the pH value of the bulk liquid or the thickness of the membrane layer takes a medium large value, the electrophoretic mobility of the particle has a local maximum as the thickness of the double layer varies.
