Abstract:Simulated photoelectron spectroscopy was conducted to investigate the structural evolution and electronic properties of TiASi l (A = Sc, Ti; l ≤ 12) clusters and their anions via the Perdew–Burke–Enzerhof scheme and extensive cluster search using the ABCluster software. The results revealed that the ground-state structures of the TiASi l (A = Sc, Ti) clusters generally exhibited similar configurations except for the Ti 2 Si 3 , ScTiSi 3 , and TiScSi 10 clusters. Furthermore, the TiASi l clusters exhibited an adsorptive evolution pattern, and the TiASi 4 unit was considered the basic constituent framework of the structure, excluding several distortions and minor changes. With the increase in the cluster size, the lowest-energy structures varied from the exohedral to the cage structures of the single-metal atom at the center. Regarding the second energy difference data, the neutral TiASi 4 clusters exhibited better stability among the neutral and anionic TiASi l (A = Sc, Ti; l ≤ 12) clusters. Furthermore, the chemical bonding in the TiASi 4 clusters was analyzed by molecular orbitals (MOs), highest occupied MO–lowest unoccupied MO gaps, and adaptive natural density partitioning analyses for the best Ti 2 Si 4 cluster especially, and the results were combined with the natural population analysis data. The hybridization of the spd orbital of the metal atoms, eight localized bonds, and four delocalized bonds may primarily account for the relative stabilities of the neutral, square bipyramidal structure of Ti 2 Si 4 . Thus, the TiASi 4 clusters may be assembled as the basic units of silicon-based semiconductor clusters of large-size neutral and anionic TiASi l .

Structural and Electronic Properties of TaSi(n) (N=1-13) Clusters: a Relativistic Density Functional Investigation.

Abstract:The TaSi(n) (n=1-13) clusters with doublet, quartet, and sextet spin configurations have been systematically investigated by a relativistic density functional theory with the generalized gradient approximation available in Amsterdam density functional program. The total bonding energies, equilibrium geometries, Mulliken populations as well as Hirshfeld charges of TaSi(n) (n=1-13) clusters are calculated and presented. The emphasis on the stabilities and electronic properties is discussed. The most stable structures of the small TaSi(n) (n=1-6) clusters and the evolutional rule of low-lying geometries of the larger TaSi(n) (n=7-13) clusters are obtained. Theoretical results indicate that the most stable structure of TaSi(n) (n=1-6) clusters keeps the similar framework as the most stable structure of Si(n+1) clusters except for TaSi(3) cluster. The Ta atom in the lowest-energy TaSi(n) (n=1-13) isomers occupies a gradual sinking site, and the site moves from convex, to flatness, and to concave with the number of Si atom varying from 1 to 13. When n=12, the Ta atom in TaSi(12) cluster completely falls into the center of the Si frame, and a cagelike TaSi(12) geometry is formed. Meanwhile, the net Mulliken and Hirsheld populations of the Ta atom in the TaSi(n) (n=1-13) clusters vary from positive to negative, manifesting that the charges in TaSi(n) (n>/=12) clusters transfer from Si atoms to Ta atom. Additionally, the contribution of Si-Si and Si-Ta interactions to the stability of TaSi(n) clusters is briefly discussed. Furthermore, the investigations on atomic averaged binding energies and fragmentation energies show that the TaSi(n) (n=2,3,5,7,10,11,12) clusters have enhanced stabilities. Compared with pure silicon clusters, a universal narrowing of highest occupied molecular orbital-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital gap in TaSi(n) clusters is found.

Abstract:In this study, we employed density functional theory coupled with the full-potential linearized augmented plane-wave method (FP-LAPW) to investigate the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of the Ti 2 FeAs alloy adopting the Hg 2 CuTi-type structure. Our findings demonstrate that all the examined structures exhibit ferromagnetic (FM) behaviour. By conducting electronic band structure calculations, we observed an energy gap of 0.739 eV for Ti 2 FeAs in the spin-down state and metallic intersections at the Fermi level in the spin-up state. These results suggest the half-metallic (HM) nature of Ti 2 FeAs, where the Ti-d and Fe-d electronic states play a significant role near the Fermi level. Additionally, the obtained total magnetic moments are consistent with the Slater–Pauling rule ( M tot = Z tot − 18), indicating 100% spin polarization for these compounds. To explore their optical properties, we employed the dielectric function to compute various optical parameters, including absorption spectra, energy-loss spectra, refractive index, reflectivity, and conductivity. Furthermore, various thermodynamic parameters were evaluated at different temperatures and pressures. The results obtained from the elastic parameters reveal the anisotropic and ductile nature of the Ti 2 FeAs compound. These findings suggest that Ti 2 FeAs has potential applications in temperature-tolerant devices and optoelectronic devices as a UV absorber.

Abstract:The layered structure dichalcogenide Ti${\mathrm{S}}_{2}$ was studied in thin-film and bulk models, with the use of the self-consistent linearized augmented-plane-wave (LAPW) scheme. Band-structure calculations were performed on the single sandwich (S-Ti-S), the double sandwich ${(\mathrm{S}\ensuremath{-}\mathrm{T}\mathrm{i}\ensuremath{-}\mathrm{S})}_{2}$, and the bulk to reveal the strength and effect of interlayer interactions on the electronic structure. Comparisons are made with existing bulk band models. The fully intercalated LiTi${\mathrm{S}}_{2}$ compound was studied by the same LAPW methods. Changes in the electronic density of states and charge density induced by the alkali intercalate are described.

Abstract:The new lithium arsenidotetrelates Li8SiAs4, Li8GeAs4, Li14SiAs6, Li14GeAs6 and Li14SnAs6 were synthesized via ball milling and structurally characterized by Rietveld analysis of X-ray powder diffraction data. The aliovalent substitution of lithium in hexagonal Li3As by introducing a tetravalent tetrel cation stabilizes cubic structures for Li8TtAs4 (Tt = Si, Ge) in the space group" Pa" "3" @#x0305;" " and for the lithium richer compound Li14TtAs6 (Tt = Si, Ge, Sn) in the higher symmetrical space group Fm"3" @#x0305;m (No. 225). Thermal properties of the arsenidotetrelates were investigated via high temperature powder diffraction and differential thermal analysis revealing a decomposition process of the lithium richer arsenidotetrelate (Li14TtAs6 → Li8TtAs4 + 2 Li3As) into the lithium poorer arsenidotetrelates and lithiumarsenide at moderate temperatures. Impedance spectroscopy shows moderate to good lithium ion conductivity for the lithium arsenidotetrelates.

Abstract:Titanium disulfide (TiS 2 ) has drawn considerable attention in materials, physics, and chemistry thanks to its potential applications in batteries, supercapattery and thermoelectric devices. However, the simplified and controlled synthesis of high-quality TiS 2 remains a great challenge. In this study, a straightforward, widely accessible approach to the one-step chemical vapor transport (CVT) process is presented. Meanwhile, combining high-pressure (HP) Raman spectroscopy measurements and first-principles calculations, the pressure-induced phase transition of TiS 2 from P-3m1 Phase (phase I) to C2/m Phase (Phase II) at 16.0 GPa and then to P-62m phase (Phase III) at 32.4 GPa was disclosed. The discovery of HP dives within the Weyl semi-metallic phase represents a significant advancement toward understanding the electronic topological states, discovering new physical phenomena, developing new electronic devices, and gaining insight into the properties of elementary particles.

Abstract:The new ternary pnictides La3TiX 5 (X = P, As) and the solid solutions of La3Ti(Sb1-x As x )5 (x = 0–1) and La3Ti(As1-y P y )5 (y = 0–1) were synthesized under high pressure and high temperature conditions. The crystal structure of La3TiX 5 (X = P, As) was determined from the X-ray powder diffraction data. These compounds crystallize in a hexagonal Hf5Sn3Cu-anti type structure with the space group P63/mcm and lattice parameters a = 8.7927 Å and c = 5.7643 Å for La3TiP5, and a = 9.0267 Å and c = 5.9071 Å for La3TiAs5, in which the face-sharing TiX 6 octahedral chains running along the c axis are separated by La3+ in the interstice sites with a distance about 9 Å, presenting a strong one-dimensional crystal structure. Physical properties measurements indicate La3TiX 5 (X = P, As) are Pauli paramagnetic metals. The calculations reveal that La3+ ions are not perfectly ionic owing to the non-negligible contributions of La to the density of state (DOS) at the Fermi level and bridge the X atoms between the chains, which make the samples to be 3-dimensional metals. What’s more, the change of X in La3TiX 5 from Sb to P increases the ionicity of La3+ and thus decreases the electron hopping between the conducting chains.

Abstract:We report the structure and properties of a new Ce-based compound Ce3TiAs5 synthesized under high-pressure and high-temperature conditions. It crystallizes in a hexagonal Hf5Sn3Cu-anti type structure with zig-zag like Ce chains along the c axis. This compound is metallic and undergoes a magnetic phase transition at TN=13 K. A metamagnetic transition occurs at ~0.7 T. The Sommerfeld coefficient for the compound is determined to be about 215 mJ/(Ce-mol*K2), demonstrating a heavy Fermion behavior. The resistivity is featured with two humps, which arises from the synergistic effect of crystal electric field (CEF) and magnetic scattering. The magnetic ordering temperature TN gradually increases in the sequence of Ce3TiPn5 with Pn=Bi, Sb, and As, which implies that the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction should be still predominant in Ce3TiAs5.

Abstract:The title compound, the Tl-richest in the K-Tl system, has been synthesized in Ta containers via direct reaction of the elements at 400 degrees C followed by quenching to room temperature and subsequent annealing at 150 degrees C for 4 weeks. It crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Cccm (No. 66) with a = 16.625(1) A, b = 23.594(2) A, c = 15.369(2) A (22 degrees C), and Z = 8. Two different Tl(12) units consisting of augmented tetrahedral stars are condensed into layers of such tetrahedra, and further Tl(2) dumbbells and the potassium cations also interconnect the stars and layers into a three-dimensional network. The former anionic Tl(8) subunits clearly resemble those in the heteroatomic 3-D structure of cubic Cr(3)Si before their augmentation with bridging atoms. The compound is metallic (rho(270) = 22.6 micro omega x cm, alpha = 0.0023 K(-)(1)) and shows Pauli-like paramagnetic susceptibility (chi(296) = 1.1 x 10(-4) emu/mol). EHTB calculations illustrate the importance of Tl p-orbital bonding, the positive Tl-Tl overlap populations up to E(F), and greater strengths of the Tl-Tl bonding between and about the surface of the augmented Tl(12) units. Cations between the thallium layers play specific and important roles in the structure.

Abstract:Six rare-earth arsenic tellurides have been synthesized by the reactions of the rare-earth elements (Ln) with As and Te at 1123 K. LaAsTe (a = 7.8354(11) A, b = 4.1721(6) A, c = 10.2985(14) A, T = 153 K), PrAsTe (a = 7.728(2) A, b = 4.1200(11) A, c = 10.137(3) A, T = 153 K), SmAsTe (a = 7.6180(16) A, b = 4.0821(9) A, c = 9.991(2) A, T = 153 K), GdAsTe (a = 7.5611(15) A, b = 4.0510(8) A, c = 9.920(2) A, T = 153 K), DyAsTe (a = 7.4951(13) A, b = 4.0246(7) A, c = 9.8288(17) A, T = 153 K), and ErAsTe (a = 7.4478(1) A, b = 4.0078(1) A, c = 9.7552(2) A, T = 153 K) crystallize with four formula units in the orthorhombic space group D2h16-Pnma. These compounds are isostructural and belong to the beta-ZrSb2 structure type. In each compound, the Ln atoms are coordinated by a tricapped trigonal prism of four As atoms and five Te atoms. The entire three-dimensional structure is built up by the motif of the LnAs4Te5 tricapped trigonal prisms. Infinite nonalternating zigzag As chains are found along the b axis, with As-As distances in these compounds ranging from 2.5915(5) to 2.6350(9) A. Conductivity measurements in the direction of these As chains indicate that PrAsTe is metallic whereas SmAsTe and DyAsTe are weakly metallic. Antiferromagnetic transitions occur in SmAsTe and DyAsTe at 3 and 9 K, respectively. DyAsTe above 9 K follows the Curie-Weiss law.

Abstract:The structural and electronic properties of TiB2 have been calculated using the first-principles total-energy pseudopotential method based on density functional theory. It is shown that the calculated lattice constants and heat of formation of TiB2 are in good agreement with the experimental results. By analyzing the band structure, density of states and Mulliken population, it is found that the bonding nature in TiB2 is a combination of ionic, covalent and metallic. The 2s–2p interaction exists in the close-packed layer of boron atoms. The hybridization of Ti-3d and B-2p from different layers is the main reason for the creation of pseudogap and results in the strong interlayer covalent bonding. In the same time, the charge transfer from titanium to boron is as significant as 1.16 electrons in the present case. The d–d resonance and free-electron 3d states of titanium atoms contribute to the covalent and metallic bonding in the layer of titanium atoms.

Abstract:A van der Waals bonded moiré bilayer formed by sequential growth of TiSe2 and TiTe2 monolayers exhibits emergent electronic structure as evidenced by angle-resolved photoemission band mapping. The two monolayers adopt the same lattice orientation but incommensurate lattice constants. Despite the lack of translational symmetry, sharp dispersive bands are observed. The dispersion relations appear distinct from those for the component monolayers alone. Structure and physical properties for a new layered pnictide-oxide: BaTi₂As₂O.

Abstract:We have successfully synthesized a new layered pnictide-oxide: BaTi(2)As(2)O. It shares similar characteristics with Na(2)Ti(2)Sb(2)O. The crystal has a layered structure with a tetragonal P4/nmm group (a = 4.047(3) Å, c = 7.275(4) Å). The resistivity shows an anomaly at 200 K, which should be ascribed to an SDW or structural transition. The SDW or structural transition is confirmed by magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity measurements. These behaviors are very similar to those observed in parent compounds of high-T(c) iron-based pnictide superconductors, in which the superconductivity shows up when the anomaly due to the SDW or structural transition is suppressed. Therefore, the new layered pnictide-oxide, BaTi(2)As(2)O, could be a potential parent compound for superconductivity. It is found that Li( + ) doping significantly suppresses the anomaly, but no superconductivity emerges so far.
