Abstract:AgIn5Te8 was synthesized by melting reaction method, the electrical and thermal transport properties have been evaluated along the directions parallel and perpendicular to the ingot growth direction. Both electrical and thermal transport properties show the anisotropic characteristics. The electrical and thermal conductivities along the perpendicular direction are higher than that of parallel one. The large band gap of about 1.0 eV determines a low electrical conductivity. The T-1 dependence of diffusivity for AgIn5Te8 suggests a phonon dominant transport behavior, consistent with the insulating character of the electrical transport properties. AgIn5Te8 owns intrinsically low thermal conductivity, which decreases with increasing temperature, from 1.1 W m(-1) K-1 and 0.95 W m(-1) K-1 at room temperature to 0.5 W m(-1) K-1 and 0.4 W m(-1) K-1 at 873 K for AgIn5Te8 along perpendicular and parallel directions, respectively. This low thermal conductivity for AgIn5Te8 demonstrates this system could be promising for thermoelectric applications by improving electrical transport properties through tuning carrier concentrations. Structure and thermoelectric performance of AgyIn3.33-y/3Se5 compounds

Abstract:In this study, we found new AgyIn3.33-y/3Se5 compounds in Ag-In-Se system by static diffusion method combined with common X-ray diffraction and backscattering electron analysis. The crystal structure belongs to the trilateral system with the P3m1 space group, which features with a two-dimensional layered structure. The unit cell is composed of 9-atom quantum layers arranged in the sequence of Se1-In1-Se2-In2-Se3-Ag/In3-Se4-In4-Se5, and in-between these layers are combined by the weak van der Waals force. The sintered bulk samples show highly anisotropic transport properties and have ultralow lattice thermal conductivity along the direction parallel to sintering pressure about 0.15 W m-1 K-1 at 873 K. The intrinsically ultralow lattice thermal conductivity mainly comes from low phonon velocity and the strong coupling between low frequency optical phonon and acoustic phonons. AgxIn3.33-x/3Se5 compounds behave as an n-type conduction. The electrical conductivity is 4×104 S m-1 and the Seebeck coefficient is - 80 μV K-1 at room temperature. Therefore, AgxIn3.33-x/3Se5 compounds show high electrical transport properties in a wide temperature range, and the power factor is around 5 μW cm-1 K-2 in the range of 450-800 K. Due to the ultra-low lattice thermal conductivity along the direction parallel to sintering pressure, Ag0.407In3.198Se5 reached a maximum ZT of 1.01 at 873 K and an average ZT of 0.45 at 300 K-850 K. The discovery of AgyIn3.33-y/3Se5 expands the n-type Copper based Chalcogenide and lays an important foundation for the application of Copper based Chalcogenide.

Abstract:The microstructure and optical properties of Ag 5 In 5 Te 47 Sb 33 phase change films with high reflection in the thermal annealing process were systematically reported. The as-deposited film is amorphous and its crystalline temperature is 160°C. The annealed films are crystalline. The crystalline phases are AgInTe 2 , AgSbTe 2 and Sb when annealed at low temperature. When annealed at 220°C, the AgInTe 2 phase disappears and the amount of AgSbTe 2 is the largest. The research of electronic transmission microscopy shows that the morphology of AgSbTe 2 is sphere and that of Sb is bludgeon. The reflection of the annealed films is higher and reaches its peak value at 220°C.
Tetrahedral Distortion and Thermoelectric Performance of the Ag-Substituted CuInTe 2 Chalcopyrite Compound

Abstract:It is known that the electronic transport and heat conduction of thermoelectric materials are very sensitive to structural changes. In this article, the effect of Ag substitution on the crystal structure and hence thermoelectric properties of Cu1–xAgxInTe2 (x = 0, 0.05, 0.15, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, and 1.00) solid solutions are investigated. The structural analysis shows that with the increasing Ag content, the lattice strain changes from tensile stress to compressive stress, and the tetrahedral distortion first relieves and then aggravates, which influences not only electronic but also thermal transport properties. The replacement of Cu by Ag results in the reduction of carrier concentration and lattice thermal conductivity. Although the enhancement in zT values of Cu1–xAgxInTe2 samples mainly originates from the significantly reduced lattice thermal conductivity, the improved electronic transport properties due to Ag substitution also play an important role. As a result, a maximum zT value of ∼1.36 is achieved for Cu0.75Ag0.25InTe2 at 823 K, which is a 92% improvement compared with the value of pristine CuInTe2. Our study provides a primary view of the relationship between the structure and thermoelectric performance, which is beneficial to the optimization of thermoelectric properties.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:The rigid crystalline sublattice of Te ions in AgCuTe provides an effective electrical transport channel, enabling AgCuTe to exhibit good electrical properties. However, the appearance of vacancies or interstitial atoms within the Te2- rigid anionic framework poses significant challenges both theoretically and experimentally. Here, we are the first to discover the existence of localized Te-i, V-Cu, and V-Ag multiple defects in the AgCuTe phase, as well as a highly ordered arrangement of V-Cu in the Cu2Te phase of AgCuTe1-z samples, by only fine-tuning the Te stoichiometric ratio. The formation of these localized defects arises from the excess precipitation of Ag and Cu during the process, which enhances phonon scattering and reduces thermal conductivity. Simultaneously, the total cation content in AgCuTe1-z samples increases relative to the anion, thereby optimizing total intrinsic vacancies and carrier concentration. As a result, there is a 311% increase in the power factor and a 44% decrease in the lattice thermal conductivity at room temperature, leading to a 54% net increase in ZT compared to that of pristine AgCuTe. This approach is expected to be a universal modification strategy for enhancing the thermoelectric properties of other Te-based anionic framework superionic conductor materials.

Abstract:Cubic-spinel Ag1-xCuxIn5S8 is promising as it is a kind of In-S-based thermoelectric material using ecofriendly elements like In, Cu and S. Here, we develop a melting method to synthesize single-phase Ag1-xCuxIn5S8 alloys using metal sulfides as precursors, and we also comprehensively study their thermoelectric properties, chemical bonding, electronic and phonon structures, and defect chemistry. Owing to the complex crystal structures, weak chemical bonding, and "rattling-like " phonon modes, the Ag1-xCuxIn5S8 alloys show low lattice thermal conductivity of-0.63-0.72 Wm K--1(-1) at 873 K. The optimal figure of merit (ZT) of the n-type Ag1-xCuxIn5S8 can reach-0.31 at 873 K, which is higher than the theoretical prediction. The diamond-like crystal structures also enable them to have good mechanical properties, with a hardness of-3.95 GPa, comparable to those thermoelectric materials with the highest mechanical strength. Our understanding of the "rattling-like " phonon modes and defect chemistry in AgIn5S8 can also guide the further development of the more promising p-type AgIn5S8 and other advanced cubic-spinel thermoelectric materials.(C) 2022 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Polycrystalline samples of In-4(Se1-x Te (x) )(3) were synthesized by using a melting-quenching-annealing process. The thermoelectric performance of the samples was evaluated by measuring the transport properties from 290 K to 650 K after sintering using the spark plasma sintering (SPS) technique. The results indicate that Te substitution can effectively reduce the thermal conductivity while maintaining good electrical transport properties. In4Te3 shows the lowest thermal conductivity of all compositions tested.
Effect of Ag/Sb Ratio on the Thermoelectric Properties of (gete) 85 (Agysb2-Yte3-y)15 TAGS Alloys

Abstract:(GeTe) 85(Ag y Sb 2-y Te 3-y) 15(y=1.0,1.02,1.2,1.3,1.5) TAGS alloys with different Ag / Sb ratio were synthesized and Ag 8 GeTe 6 with low thermal conductivity as the second phase was found in nonstoichiometric samples.The lattice thermal conductivity could be greatly decreased by changing the Ag / Sb ratio and the value was as low as 0.2Wm-1 K-1 for the sample with y=1.3at 700K.However,the electrical conductivity of the samples increased first and then decreased,while the Seebeck coefficient behaved inversely,as the Ag / Sb ratio increased.The maximumZTvalue of about 1.37was obtained at 744Kfor the sample with y=1.02,which increased about 10%compared with that of the stoichiometric one.

Abstract:The structural parameters and elastic constants of AgInTe2 crystal are calculated by using the first-principle calculations within local density approximation. The calculated structural parameters and elastic constants are in agreement with other theoretical or experimental results. Based on the quasi-harmonic Debye method, the pressure and temperature dependencies of the equilibrium volume, the bulk modulus, the Debye temperature, the Gruneisen parameter, the thermal expansion coefficient and so on are obtained.

Abstract:By virtue of the excellent plasticity and tunable transport properties, Ag2S-based materials demonstrate an intriguing prospect for flexible or hetero-shaped thermoelectric applications. Among them, Ag2S1-xTex exhibits rich and interesting variations in crystal structure, mechanical and thermoelectric transport properties. However, Te alloying obviously introduces extremely large order-disorder distributions of cations and anions, leading to quite complicated crystal structures and thermoelectric properties. Detailed composition-structure-performance correlation of Ag2S1-xTex still remains to be established. In this work, we designed and prepared a series of Ag2S1-xTex (x = 0–0.3) materials with low Te content. We discovered that the monoclinic-to-cubic phase transition occurs around x = 0.16 at room temperature. Te alloying plays a similar role as heating in facilitating this monoclinic-to-cubic phase transition, which is analyzed based on the thermodynamic principles. Compared with the monoclinic counterparts, the cubic-structured phases are more ductile and softer in mechanical properties. In addition, the cubic phases show a degenerately semiconducting behavior with higher thermoelectric performance. A maximum zT = 0.8 at 600 K and bending strain larger than 20% at room temperature were obtained in Ag2S0.7Te0.3. This work provides a useful guidance for designing Ag2S-based alloys with enhanced plasticity and high thermoelectric performance.

Achieving Metal-Like Malleability and Ductility in Ag2Te1-xSx Inorganic Thermoelectric Semiconductors with High Mobility

Abstract:Inorganic semiconductor Ag2Te1-xSx has been recently found to exhibit unexpected plastic deformation with compressive strain up to 30%. However, the origin of the abnormal plasticity and how to simultaneously achieve superb ductility and high mobility are still elusive. Here, we demonstrate that crystalline/amorphous Ag2Te1-xSx (x = 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5) composites can exhibit excellent compressive strain up to 70% if the monoclinic Ag2Te phase, which commonly exists in the matrix, is eliminated. Significantly, an ultra-high tensile elongation reaching 107.3% was found in Ag2Te0.7S0.3, which is the highest one yet reported in the system and even surpasses those achieved in some metals and high-entropy alloys. Moreover, high mobility of above 1000 cm(2) V-1 s(-1) at room temperature and good thermoelectric performance are simultaneously maintained. A modified Ashby plot with ductility factor versus carrier mobility is thereby proposed to highlight the potential of solid materials for applications in flexible/wearable electronics.

Abstract:The transport characteristics of high performance (AgxSbTex/2+1.5)(15)(GeTe)(85) (TAGS-85) (x - 0.4-1.2) thermoelectric alloys are investigated. It is found that the carrier mean free path of TAGS-85 materials is comparable to the lattice parameter, indicating that this system has reached the minimum possible mobility, the Ioffe-Regel limit, and that further reduction of grain size will not affect the mobility while benefiting to the thermal conductivity reduction. The fine-grained samples are prepared by melt spinning to corroborate the supposition. The carrier mobility and mean free path of melt spun samples are indeed comparable with those of coarse-grained samples, while the lattice thermal conductivity is suppressed effectively as a result of the increasing boundaries and hence phonon scattering. A state-of-the-art ZT of similar to 1.6 is obtained for the melt-spun fine-grained samples and the temperature region of ZT >1.2 has been broadened notably, which is pretty encouraging for the future applications.

Abstract:Nonstoichiometric ternary thermoelectric materials Ag2−ySbyTe1+y (y=1.26, 1.29, 1.32, 1.35, and 1.38) were prepared by a direct melt-quench and hot press process. In situ composites of AgSbTe2 and Sb2Te3 were obtained over the entire composition range with a typical Widmanstätten pattern. Thermoelectric properties were measured from 300K to 673K, which changed systematically with Sb2Te3 ratio. The phase transition occurring at about 633K, forming the single phased AgSbTe2, can significantly influence the electrical transport properties. Various crystallographic defects in different scales, such as atomic ordering, nanodomains, dislocations and stacking faults, have been observed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and their influences on lattice thermal conductivity have been discussed. Due to the extremely low thermal conductivity (about 0.6Wm−1K−1) and large positive Seebeck coefficient of ∼250μVK−1 detected in Ag0.71Sb1.29Te2.29, the maximum dimensionless figure of merit ZT of 1.37 was obtained at 600K.
Harnessing the Unusually Strong Improvement of Thermoelectric Performance of AgInTe2 with Nanostructuring

Abstract:Nanostructuring is a well-established approach to improve the thermoelectric behavior of materials. However, its effectiveness is restricted if excessively small particle sizes are necessary to considerably decrease the lattice thermal conductivity. Furthermore, if the electrical conductivity is unfavorably affected by the nanostructuring, it could cancel out the advantages of this approach. Computer simulations predict that silver indium telluride, AgInTe 2 , is unique among chalcopyrite-structured chalcogenides in requiring only a mild reduction of particle size to achieve a substantial reduction in lattice thermal conductivity. Here, ab-initio calculations and machine learning are combined to systematically chart the thermoelectric properties of nanostructured AgInTe 2 , in comparison with the Cu-based counterpart, CuInTe 2 . In addition to the temperature and doping carrier concentration dependence, ZT is calculated for both materials as functions of the polycrystalline average grain size, taking into account the effect of nanostructuring on both phonon and electron transport. It is shown that the different order of magnitude between the mean free path of electrons and phonons disentangles the connection between the power factor and lattice thermal conductivity when reducing the crystal size. ZT values up to 2 are predicted for p-type AgInTe 2 at 700 K when the average grain size is in the affordable 10-100 nm range.

Abstract:A few multicomponent AgPb_mSbTe_(m+2) compounds with different compositions were synthesized under different cooling rates and then annealed.The powder X-ray diffraction shows that AgPb_mSbTe_(m+2) has the same crystal structure(fcc) as PbTe.The microstructure analysis indicates that severe segregation occurs in the compounds prepared by melt-quenching.The Ag-Sb-rich phase can be observed at the grain boundaries.In contrast,the compounds prepared by slow-cooling have little segregation.After annealed,this segregated phase disappears.The AgPb_mSbTe_(m+2) matrix displays a dendrite microstructure.The accurate lattice parameters were measured and calculated by the interpolation method.It is found that the lattice parameters vary monotonously with m and increase with reducing content of Ag.

Abstract:NaCl-type metal tellurides (MTe) have been widely studied due to unique physical properties. We investigated the In-doping effects on structural and physical properties of Na-Cl type (AgPbBi)(1-x)/3InxTe and the superconducting properties of the In-doped samples. Polycrystalline samples with x = 0-0.5 were synthesized by utilizing high-pressure synthesis. For x = 0.2-0.5, superconductivity was observed in magnetization measurements, where the highest transition temperature (Tc) was 2.8 K for x = 0.4. We measured specific heat for x = 0.4 and confirmed the bulk nature of the superconductivity. The evolution of the Seebeck coefficient and lattice constant by In doping suggests that In valence state is In+3, and the In doping generates electron carriers in the (AgPbBi)(1-x)/3InxTe system.
