Abstract:In an attempt to widen the family of Phosphorus Metal Halides (MxPyXz) and enable new applications, post-synthetic modifications to the MxPyXz, Cu2P3I2 have been reported. While such a technique suggests access to an entirely new family of MxPyXz-based materials, we report, in this work, that the ion-exchange process seemingly influences important properties such as the crystallographic pattern and vibrational modes.

Abstract:Atomically precise Pd-thiolate clusters are well-known for their well-defined structures and diverse applications involving catalysis, sensors, and biomedicine. While many of these clusters have been studied, their molecular structures typically feature a tiara-like arrangement. In this study, we present the first example of a non-tiara-like Pd-thiolate cluster: the octahedral Pd6(SC6H11)12 (denoted as Pd6-Oct). The composition and geometric structure of the cluster were characterized using electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) together with single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SXRD). Despite having a similar chemical composition to tiara-like Pd6(SC2H4Ph)12 (denoted as Pd6-Tia), Pd6-Oct exhibits a distinctly different geometric structure. Additionally, UV-vis-NIR absorption spectroscopy combined with quantum chemical calculations provided valuable insights into the electronic structures of these clusters. The excited-state dynamics, host-guest chemistry, and the catalytic properties of Pd6-Oct and Pd6-Tia were examined to compare their structure-property relationships. This research represents significant advances in the synthesis and understanding of structure-property correlations in Pd-thiolate clusters.

First-principles study of the structural energetics of PdTi and PtTi

Abstract:The structural energetics of PdTi and PtTi have been studied using first-principles density-functional theory with pseudopotentials and a plane-wave basis. We predict that in both materials, the experimentally reported orthorhombic $B19$ phase will undergo a low-temperature phase transition to a monoclinic $B19'$ ground state. Within a soft-mode framework, we relate the $B19$ structure to the cubic $B2$ structure, observed at high temperature, and the $B19'$ structure to $B19$ via phonon modes strongly coupled to strain. In contrast to NiTi, the $B19$ structure is extremely close to hcp. We draw on the analogy to the bcc-hcp transition to suggest likely transition mechanisms in the present case.

Abstract:Structure and electronic properties of recently discovered Ti8C12 molecule are studied using the discrete variational method within the framework of local density approximation. The geometry of this novel cluster is optimized to be a distorted dodecahedron by varing the bond lengths of Ti - C and C - C while maintaining the T(h) symmetry, and the electronic states and the chemical bonding are discussed.

Abstract:The atomic structures and electronic properties of small Ti-N (N=2-10) clusters have been studied by using the density-functional theory with a local spin density approximation. We find that the inner-shells (3s3p) of the titanium atom plays an important role in the formation of the small clusters. We have obtained the ground state of titanium clusters, Ti-7 is found to be a magic cluster, which is in good agreement with the experimental results. Starting with Ti-8 cluster some features of the electronic structure of the titanium bulk have been developed. The ionization potentials and magnetic moments for these small titanium clusters are also presented. (C) 2000 American Institute of Physics. [S0021- 9606(00)30544-X].

Abstract:In this work geometric optimization and potential energy surface (PES) scan for the TiO2 molecule were carried out to find out possible stable structures by using quantum chemical calculations. The ground state (S-0 1 (1)A(1)) has the only equilibrium with a symmetric bent structure, whereas the linear conformer is unstable. The first singlet excited state (S-1 1 B-1(2)), on the other hand, possesses two potential minima where one is bent around the Franck-Condon region and the other is linear. The second singlet excited state (S-2 1 (1)A(2)) has only one minimum which is linear, and at which geometry the first two excited states degenerate. Other low-lying singlet and triplet excited states have been investigated accordingly. Among the functionals applied in the present DFT calculations, B3LYP gave results most close to available experimental data, while some recently developed ones including HSE06, omega B97X-D and CAM-B3LYP were not satisfactory for this small system. Ab initio methods such as CASSCF, CASPT2 as well as CCSD-related calculations have been applied, and the latter two showed good results similar to DFT/B3LYP.

Abstract:In this paper, we mainly use the first-principles method based on density functional theory to study the structure and electronic properties of three new two-dimensional materials consisting of five-membered rings, PtS 2 , PtSe 2 and PtTe 2 . Based on the structure of the pentagon tile of Cairo, the substitution of Pt, S and Pt, Se and Pt, Te between the atoms in the unequal position of the minimum repeating unit will result in different structures, and then different structures will be obtained. The obtained structure is optimized, and the phonon spectrum is calculated. Finally, the three phonon spectrum stable structures of penta-PtS 2 , penta-PtSe 2 and penta-PtTe 2 are obtained. Then we proved the stability of these three structures from the aspects of dynamics and thermodynamics. Then their electronic properties were studied. From the calculated energy band diagram, we found that these three structures are indirect band gap semiconductors.

First-Principles Study of Atomic Structure and Subsurface Dipoles of PbTiO3 (001) Surfaces

Abstract:First-principles pseudopotential calculations were carried out to investigate the (001) surfaces of tetragonal and cubic PbTiO3. Both PbO- and TiO2-terminated surfaces were considered in a half-frozen-symmetrical model. The calculated results show that the surfaces of tetragonal and cubic PbTiO3 were different in many aspects because of the tetragonal ferroelectric distortion suppressing the surface relaxation. The net subsurface dipoles of tetragonal PbTiO3 slabs moved outward bulk. In comparison, that of cubic PbTiO3 slabs moved inward bulk. Nevertheless, there was no strong surface-induced polarization found in all investigated surface structures. The analysis of the structural stability indicates that the PbO-terminated (001) surface of cubic PbTiO3 was most energetically stable of the four considered surfaces, and the cubic PbTiO3 slabs were generally more stable than the tetragonal PbTiO3 ones. Moreover, the different terminated surfaces of tetragonal PbTiO3 have a comparable stability, while PbO-terminated surface of cubic PbTiO3 was much more energetically favorable.

Abstract:DMol cluster method based on density-functional theory has been used to study the structural stability of icosahedral ${\mathrm{Ti}}_{13},$ ${\mathrm{Ti}}_{13}^{\ensuremath{-}1},$ and ${\mathrm{Ti}}_{13}^{+1}$ clusters. The calculated results show that ${\mathrm{Ti}}_{13},$ ${\mathrm{Ti}}_{13}^{\ensuremath{-}1},$ and ${\mathrm{Ti}}_{13}^{+1}$ clusters favor a ${\mathrm{D}}_{3d}$ structure due to Jahn-Teller effect. However, for neutral ${\mathrm{Ti}}_{13}$ and positively charged ${\mathrm{Ti}}_{13}^{+1}$ clusters, the binding energies of the ${\mathrm{I}}_{h}$ and ${\mathrm{D}}_{5d}$ structures are quite close to that of the ${\mathrm{D}}_{3d}$ structure. The small distortion from the icosahedron in the ${\mathrm{D}}_{3d}$ structure is consistent with the prediction from the collision-induced dissociation experiment on positively charged ${\mathrm{Ti}}_{13}^{+1}$ cluster. The structural distortion in the charged clusters and the bonding feature in the neutral icosahedral ${\mathrm{Ti}}_{13}$ cluster are discussed. In addition, all the clusters in the present study are found to be magnetic and show small magnetic moments.

Abstract:Under the framework of density functional theory, an all-electron calculation on the geometrical structures and dissociation channels of Ti/P binary cluster ions has been carried out. The P-2, P-3 and P-4 structures are found to be the relatively stable units in these cluster ions. The lowest energy geometries of these Ti/P binary cluster ions may be constructed by bonding Ti, Ti-2, Ti-3 or Ti-4 unit with one or two relatively stable P-2, P-3 and P-4 units. The most possible dissociation channels of these Ti/P binary cluster ions are the detachment of P-2, P-3 or P-4 fragment. It is well consistent with the photodissociation experimental results.

Abstract:We report a reinterpretation of the electronic structure of the $(Pt)_2I(dta)_4$ compound, based on {\em ab initio} embedded fragment calculations. Our major results are the following. First, the usually assumed electronic intra-dimer charge ordering is unrealistic. Second, the $(dta)$ ligands take part actively in the magnetic properties of the system. The proposed electronic structure is favorably confronted to experimental data. In particular, the unexplained $3:1$ $Pt^{2+}/Pt^{3+}$ abundances ratio of the XPS spectra is rationalized.

Abstract:Density functional calculation are performed to study Ti(8)C(12) isomers (T(d), C(3v), and D(2d)) in the neutral, cationic, and anionic charge states. C(3v) symmetry is found to be the most stable geometry for the neutral and anion, and the C(3v) and D(2d) isomers to be quasi-iso-energetic lowest for the cation. The electronic structure analysis show that d electron tends to be localized in the ground state. The theoretical assignment for the features in the experimental photoelectron spectra is given. All results obtained are in good agreement with the available experimental data and indicate that the C(3v) and D(2d) isomers may coexist in the photoelectron spectroscopy experiment.

Abstract:This paper reports a comprehensive study of (TiO(2))(n) (n=1-3) clusters on their structures, vertical electron affinities (VEA) and adiabatic electron affinities (AEA), and excited states that are further correlated with experimental photoelectron spectra (PES). Local density functional and time-dependent density functional methods (TTDFT) with 6-31G(d) basis set are used. For (TiO(2))(n) with n=1 and 3, the ground-state geometries are found to have C(2v) and C(s) structures, respectively, in both neutral and anionic charge states. For neutral (TiO(2))(2), the most stable structure corresponds to a C(2h) conformation. For anionic (TiO(2))(2)(-), two isomers with C(2h) and C(2v) symmetries are identified to be nearly isoenergetic. This conclusion is supported by reoptimization at CCSD/6-31G(d) level and single-point calculation at CCSD(T)/6-311+G(d) level. Hence, they are competitive candidates for the ground-state structure of (TiO(2))(2)(-). For TiO(2) and (TiO(2))(3), the calculated VEA and AEA values agree well with the experimental data. For (TiO(2))(2), the VEA and AEA obtained with the C(2v) structure agree well with the experimental data while those with the C(2h) structure do not. The subsequent assignment of PES indicates that it is the C(2v) isomer of (TiO(2))(2)(-) that represents the structure from which the photoexcitation in experimental PES takes place. TDDFT is used to determine the excited states of (TiO(2))(n) (n=1-3) and the calculated excitation energies are in good agreement with PES experiment.

Abstract:The geometric configuations and electronic structures of the TinC2n ( n = 1 ~6) clusters were studied by using quantum chemical ab initio method. Our studies showed that these TinC2n clusters grew gradually through the subunits TiC2 bounding to each other by C-C or Ti-C bond. This result could explain the experimental fact and the formation mechanism of the Metcars.

Abstract:A bulky tridentate bis(3-methyl-5-arylhydroxyphenyl)phenylphosphine (aryl = 2,4,6-tri-isopropylbenzene, Tipp[O, P, O]) ligand 1 was synthesized. Reaction of 1 with TiCl3(THF)3 (THF = tetrahydrofuran) afforded bis{Tipp[O, P, O] titanium (THF)0.59(Et2O)0.41(mu-chloro)} (2). By reducing 2 with KC8 in toluene or C6D6, two arene-bridged dititanium complexes{Tipp[O, P, O]}2 titanium (mu-eta 6:eta 6-C6H5Me) (3) and {Tipp[O, P, O]}2 titanium (THF)0.58(Et2O)0.42(mu-eta 6:eta 6-C6D6) (4) were obtained, respectively, and structurally characterized. Complexes 3 and 4 featured an inverted sandwich-type structure consisting of a distorted eta 6-toluene or eta 6-benzene unit. Density functional theory calculations analyzed the reason for the loss of aromaticity in the distorted aromatic rings.

Abstract:By using ab initio methods of all-electron or effective core potential calculations, the electronic structures and the possible aromaticity of some 10π-electron systems, C6H64− (1), N64− (2), P64− (3), S62− (4), Te62− (5) and S3N3− (6), have been studied at the SCF levels using 4-31G//4-31G and 6-31G∗//6-31G∗ basis sets. The bonding characteristics of these systems are analysed in terms of the canonical molecular orbital and the Foster-Boys localized molecular orbital results. The application of the second-order Jahn-Teller theorem to the stability of these diamagnetical planar species is presented.

Abstract:We report the presence of \sigma-aromaticity in a surface deposited cluster, Pd$_4$ on TiO$_2$ (110). In the gas phase, Pd$_4$ adopts a tetrahedral structure. However, surface binding promotes a flat, \sigma-aromatic cluster. This is the first time aromaticity is found in surface deposited clusters. Systems of this type emerge as a promising class of catalyst, and so realization of aromaticity in them may help to rationalize their reactivity and catalytic properties, as a function of cluster size and composition.

Abstract:Ab initio calculations of TiHx(x=2,3,4) were performed by HF methods at the levels of 3-21g and 3-21g** basis sets.Their optimized geometry configurations and predicted IR spectra were obtained,relative stability were discussed.The bond nature of TiH 2 with different spin multiplicity was analyzed by natural bond orbital (NBO) method.The calculated results were shown to be in agreement with those of experiment and those obtained from other calculating methods.
