Abstract:We present an experimental study on the photosensitive properties of narrow bandpass filters based on a chalcogenide Te20As30Se50 (TAS) spacer. The transmittance curve of single TAS layer was shifted towards long wavelength direction after 2h exposure by Xenon arc lamp. The refractive index and extinction coefficient were both increased together with a red shift of optical gap. A maximum 1.7% photo-induced effect was observed. Narrow band filters constituted by TAS and cryolite were manufactured by electron beam deposition. The transmittance spectrum of the filter during the exposure by a wide band source was in situ measured and the resonant wavelength was observed to turn longer gradually till saturation. A spatially localized central wavelength change up to 5.7nm was finally obtained. The stability of the photo-induced effect was studied and some comments were given at the end of this paper.

Abstract:We present a new scheme for visibly-opaque but near-infrared-transmitting filters involving 7 layers based on one-dimensional ternary photonic crystals, with capabilities in reaching nearly 100% transmission efficiency in the near-infrared region. Different decorative reflection colors can be created by adding additional three layers while maintaining the near-infrared transmission performance. In addition, our proposed structural colors show great angular insensitivity up to ±60° for both transverse electric and transverse magnetic polarizations, which are highly desired in various fields. The facile strategy described here involves a simple deposition method for the fabrication, thereby having great potential in diverse applications such as image sensors, anti-counterfeit tag, and optical measurement systems.

Abstract:Sensing materials possessing intrinsic color perception are indispensable prerequisites for the development of filterless photosensors, which could eliminate the need for complex device designs and avoid color distortion in post-processing. Traditional materials are constrained by complex processing methods and limited stability. Herein, a color-photosensitive array based on ionic liquid with selective photothermal conversion (ILSPC) has been developed for intrinsic color perception. Relying on the selective absorption, photothermal conversion, and thermosensitivity of ILSPC, a photo-thermo-electric sensing system has been constructed. Besides, the versatility of the two algorithms has been validated in color reconstruction and electrical signal prediction. As an exploration, the photosensitive array showcases promising color recognition capabilities, potentially propelling the evolution of flexible photosensors.

Application of phase change material in tunable optical filters and shutters

Abstract:This paper reports tunable integrated photonic devices in the visible and near-infrared (NIR) regions using a phase change material, Germanium Telluride (GeTe), within sub-wavelength layered optical cavity structures. GeTe exhibits two distinct index of refraction values at its amorphous and crystalline states in this spectral range. Utilizing this property, we demonstrate a multi-color filter working in visible range (400 nm-750 nm), achieving four colors through novel optical and thermal engineering of a thin film stack that includes two GeTe layers with only a single integrated joule heater element. Specifically, ultra-thin GeTe films were sandwiched between a bottom metallic mirror and a top high-index dielectric (titanium dioxide). It is shown that the crystallization temperature (Tx) of GeTe is dependent on the film thickness when less than ~20 nm. The refractive index of GeTe only changes significantly in the NIR region when it undergoes phase transitions when heated. To enhance the color contrast, a 250-nm thick silicon dioxide layer is placed under GeTe to create an optical cavity between GeTe and a bottom metal reflector. Using this optimized design, the tunable color filter shows four distinct colors using the integrated heater. In addition to a color filter, we demonstrate an electrically tunable multi-mode optical shutter in near infrared range of 1.1 m and 800 nm with more than 20 dB modulation depth. The low static power consumption of these devices achieved through reliable memory-base phase transitioning of GeTe makes them prime candidates for a number of portable consumer electronic applications.

Abstract:Nanostructures with the ability to efficiently generate colors in visible range attract lots of attention. Current plasmonic materials-based techniques always require complicated lithographic processes, which are expensive and severely limiting the production throughput. In this letter, we experimentally demonstrate a large-area silicon-based multilayer structure for color filtering. The designed lithography-free nanofilm color filters possess high transmission (>70%) and wide-angle tolerance (up to ±30°) for both TE and TM polarizations. Our approach, featuring excellent performance together with CMOS compatible materials, steps forward towards practical applications such as image sensors and display devices.
Nanostructured Metal-Insulator-metal Resonators for High-Resolution Color Filtering and Spectral Imaging

Abstract:Color filters and spectroscopes are two key components in an optical system. With the prevalence and miniaturization of liquid crystal displays (LCD), complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) image sensors and light emitting diodes (LED), current research on color filters and spectroscopes is focused on designing a novel component with high efficiency, low power consumption and slim dimension, which poses great challenges to the traditional colorant filtering and prism-based spectrum splitting techniques. In this context, surface plasmon-based nanostructures are attractive due to their small dimensions and the ability of efficient light manipulation. Here we use selective conversion between the free-space waves and spatially confined modes in plasmonic nano-resonators formed by the subwavelength metal-insulator-metal stack arrays to show that the transmission spectra through such arrays can be well controlled by using simple design rules, and high efficiency color filters capable of transmitting arbitrary colors can be achieved. These artificial nanostructures provide an approach for high spatial resolution color filtering and spectral imaging with extremely compact device architectures.

Abstract:Multispectral imagers that capture spatiospectral information are of growing importance in various fields, particularly in remote sensing and metrology. To enable integrated snapshot multispectral imagers and eliminate the drawbacks of traditional systems, such as bulkiness and slow scanning mechanisms, miniature, broadband multispectral filter arrays with narrow line widths, high transmission, and Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) compatibility are essential. However, current miniature transmissive filter arrays, primarily based on diffractive nanostructures, suffer from limitations such as small working bandwidth, low transmission, poor color purity, and sensitivity to polarization and incident angles. To address these challenges, we present a high-order Fabry–Pérot multispectral filter array (MSFA) with selective peak suppression, leveraging subwavelength nanostructures for filter tuning without changing the physical thickness and employing an ultrathin metal layer to exploit high-order resonances, significantly extending the working range and spectral resolution. High color purity across a broad range (400–1000 nm) is made possible through optical absorption from polysilicon and selective suppression from a platinum layer. The fabricated color filter arrays cover wavelengths from 622 to 960 nm, with full width at half-maximum (FWHM) ranging from 13 to 31 nm and average transmissions exceeding 60%. Our filters also show low sensitivity to oblique incident angles of up to 30° with minimal wavelength shifts. Furthermore, these filters can be downscaled to sizes compatible with modern CMOS imagers, reaching dimensions as small as 1 μm. The introduction of a resonance combining design further extends the working range (455–960 nm), aligning with the capabilities of silicon photodetectors. Its adaptability across wavelength ranges and potential for tunable applications hold promise for transformative imaging and display technologies across a wide spectrum.

Abstract:Halide perovskites are promising photoactive materials for filter-free color-imaging sensors owing to their outstanding optoelectronic properties, tunable bandgaps, and suitability for large-scale fabrication. However, producing patterned perovskite films of sufficiently high quality for such applications poses a challenge for existing fabrication methods: using solution processes to prepare patterned perovskite films is complicated, while evaporation methods often result in perovskite photodetectors with limited performance. In this paper, the authors report the development of an improved evaporation method in which substrates are treated with a brominated (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane self-assembled monolayer to improve the properties of the patterned perovskite films. The resulting perovskite photodetectors exhibit significantly enhanced photosensitivity and long-term stability (exceeding 100 days). Additionally, the polymer substrates facilitate device flexibility. Finally, perovskites comprising three different halide components, each with a different bandgap, are integrated into a device array using the developed evaporation technology, yielding sensors that enable the discrimination of red, green, and blue colors. Thus, the flexible photosensor arrays can generate colorful images closely resembling perceived patterns, demonstrating reliable color imaging. Therefore, this study successfully demonstrates filter-free color-imaging by integrating high-performance patterned and multicomponent perovskite photodetectors, highlighting the potential of such detectors for advanced optoelectronic applications, including hyperspectral imaging.

Abstract:We demonstrate an improved approach to integrate various color filters on a chip-scale by using stepwise metal-insulator-metal FP cavities. The cavity is composed of a thick silver mirror, an SU8 gap layer of controlled thickness, and a thin nickel layer. Reflective colors from red to blue can be generated from these filters through a simple UV lithography process. The filters were also fabricated on a flexible substrate which could be incorporated into wearable devices. This method can realize large-scale filter arrays with simple processing and may facilitate the use of structural color filters in displays and sensing. Abstract:Optoelectronic devices rely on conductive layers as electrodes, but they usually introduce optical losses that are detrimental to the device performances. While the use of transparent conductive oxides is established in the visible region, these materials show high losses at longer wavelengths. Here, we demonstrate a photodiode based on a metallic grating acting as an electrode. The grating generates a multiresonant photonic structure over the diode stack and allows strong broadband absorption. The obtained device achieves the highest performances reported so far for a midwave infrared nanocrystal-based detector, with external quantum efficiency above 90%, detectivity of 7 × 1011 Jones at 80 K at 5 μm, and a sub-100 ns time response. Furthermore, we demonstrate that combining different gratings with a single diode stack can generate a bias reconfigurable response and develop new functionalities such as band rejection.

Abstract:Miniaturized, wearable, and implantable optoelectronic devices and systems provide incomparable opportunities for applications in biomedical fields. Optical filters with wavelength selective reflective/transmissive responses that can be integrated onto these biointegrated platforms are critically important for high performance operation. Here, high quality, dielectric thin‐film optical filters on unconventional substrates via transfer printing are reported. Designed filters formed on flexible substrates exhibit highly spectral selective transmission and reflection, with the maximum optical density at stop band reaching 6. Additionally, freestanding filter membranes are combined with microscale optoelectronic devices, achieving enhanced emission intensity for light‐emitting diodes and spectral sensitivity for photovoltaic detectors. Finally, their in vitro cytotoxicity is evaluated within cell culture, and in vivo biocompatibility is supported in living animals. The presented results offer viable routes to high performance optical components for advanced biointegrated optoelectronic systems.

Abstract:An outstanding green‐absorbing organic material having dual intramolecular bonds and featuring a narrow absorption spectrum and high absorption coefficient is synthesized. This material forms the core of stacked organic photodetector‐on‐silicon hybrid image sensors, providing the absorption layer for innovative green‐selective organic photodetectors. The superior color selectivity of this material surpasses that of traditional color filters in Si‐based image sensors. A novel green‐absorbing organic molecule featuring dual intramolecular chalcogen bonds is synthesized and characterized. This molecule incorporates two such bonds: one between a tellurium atom and the oxygen atom of a carbonyl moiety, and the other between the tellurium atom and the adjacent nitrogen atom within a pyridine moiety. The molecule, featuring dual intramolecular chalcogen bonds exhibits a narrow absorption spectrum and elevated absorption coefficients, closely aligned with a resonance parameter of approximately 0.5. This behavior is due to its cyanine‐like characteristics and favorable electrical properties, which are a direct result of its rigid, planar molecular structure. Therefore, this organic molecule forming dual intramolecular chalcogen bonds achieves superior optoelectronic performance in green‐selective photodetectors, boasting an external quantum efficiency of over 65% and a full‐width at half maximum of less than 95 nm while maintaining the performance after 1000 h of heating aging at 85 °C. Such organic photodetectors are poised to enhance stacked organic photodetector‐on‐silicon hybrid image sensors, paving the way for the next‐generation of high‐resolution and high‐sensitivity image sensors.

Abstract:Color filters are indispensable in most color display applications. In most cases, they are chemical pigment-based filters, which produce a particular color by absorbing its complementary color, and the absorbed energy is totally wasted. If the absorbed and wasted energy can be utilized, e.g., to generate electricity, innovative energy-efficient electronic media could be envisioned. Here we show photonic nanostructures incorporated with photovoltaics capable of producing desirable colors in the visible band and utilize the absorbed light to simultaneously generate electrical powers. In contrast to the traditional colorant-based filters, these devices offer great advantages for electro-optic applications.
Incorporating Photochromic Viologen Derivative to Unprecedentedly Boost UV Sensitivity in Photoelectrochromic Hydrogel.

Abstract:Developing ultraviolet (UV) radiation sensors featuring high sensitivity, ease of operation, and rapid readout is highly desired in diverse fields. However, the strategies to enhance sensitivity of UV detection remain limited particularly for photochromic materials, which show colorimetric response toward UV irradiation. Guided by our initial goal of facilitating easier handling, we formulated a viologen derivative ([H2L]-SC) incorporating hydrogel-based UV sensor which not only inherits the photochromism of [H2L]-SC but also engenders an unprecedented reversible photoelectrochromic response that is absent in either [H2L]-SC or hydrogel alone. Judicious synergy between photochromic [H2L]-SC and polyacrylamide (PAM) converts the colorimetric response of [H2L]-SC into the electrical resistance change of [H2L]-SC@PAM, which amplifies the UV sensitivity of [H2L]-SC by 2 orders of magnitude. Explicitly, the limit of detection (LOD) for UV decreases from 296.3 mJ/cm2 based on the UV-vis absorption spectra of [H2L]-SC to 2.83 mJ/cm2 derived from the resistance variation of [H2L]-SC@PAM. Moreover, linear correlation between the resistance reduction rate of [H2L]-SC@PAM and UV dose rate can be established, rendering it as a dual platform for quantifying both the accumulated UV dose and the instant dose rate. In addition, the proposed strategy based on constructing photoelectrochromic hybrids offers a new pathway to boost the UV sensitivity that could be universal for other photochromic materials.

Abstract:Organic photoswitchable molecules have struggled in solid state form to fulfill their remarkable potential, in terms of photoswitching performance and long-term stability when compared to their inorganic counterparts. We report the concept of non-electron deficient host's surface with optimal porosity and hydrophobicity, as a priori strategy to design photoefficient organic solid-state photochromic materials with outstanding mechanical robustness. When exposed to a light stimulus including natural sunlight, the photoswitchable nanocomposite changes color promptly and reversibly, in a matter of seconds along with excellent photo-fatigue resistance, which are on a par with inorganic photochromes. Exemplars of commercially viable prototypes that are optically clear, comprising smart windows, complex photochromic sculptures, and self-erasing rewritable devices, were engineered by direct blending with resilient polymers; particularly, the use of high-stiffness polymer (> 2 GPa) is no longer an insurmountable challenge. Finally, photochromic films with anticounterfeiting features could be manufactured through precision inkjet printing of nanocrystals.

Abstract:Thin‐film semiconductors offer attractive opportunities for achieving optoelectronic functionalities that are not easily accessible with conventional bulk semiconductors. This paper presents a tunable dual‐band photodetector for multispectral sensing in the visible to short‐wave infrared range. Organic and inorganic colloidal quantum dot absorbers are integrated into a single vertically stacked structure to leverage the best features of both material systems.Multispectral imaging in short‐wave infrared (SWIR) is a powerful analytical technique because of the distinctive spectral properties of many materials in this range. However, conventional SWIR image sensors are beyond the reach of many applications due to their high price. Image sensors based on colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) are expected to deliver affordable infrared image sensors to wider application scope. So far, the demonstrated CQD image sensors do not have a multispectral capability. Here, a dual‐band photodetector based on PbS CQDs is presented. By engineering the surface of CQDs, two oppositely facing pn junctions are fabricated in series, which enable sensing in two spectral channels. Furthermore, an optical cavity is designed that reduces the spectral crosstalk between the two channels and simultaneously enables wavelength‐tunability in one channel. Finally, an organic photodiode (OPD) is integrated with a PbS CQD photodiode in a single device, leveraging a high sensitivity in visible and near‐infrared (NIR) characteristics for OPDs. The presented photodetectors exhibit low dark current below 500 nA cm−2 at 1 V bias, a fast response measured in microseconds, as well as high external quantum efficiency, reaching 70% in NIR and 30% in SWIR.
