Abstract:Controlled stacking of different two-dimensional (2D) atomic layers will greatly expand the family of 2D materials and broaden their applications. A novel approach for synthesizing MoS2/WS2 heterostructures by chemical vapor deposition has been developed. The successful synthesis of pristine MoS2/WS2 heterostructures is attributed to using core-shell WO3-x/MoO3-x nanowires as a precursor, which naturally ensures the sequential growth of MoS2 and WS2. The obtained heterostructures exhibited high crystallinity, strong interlayer interaction, and high mobility, suggesting their promising applications in nanoelectronics. The stacking orientations of the two layers were also explored from both experimental and theoretical aspects. It is elucidated that the rational design of precursors can accurately control the growth of high-quality 2D heterostructures. Moreover, this simple approach opens up a new way for creating various novel 2D heterostructures by using a large variety of heteronanomaterials as precursors.

Abstract:MoS2, as a typical layered transition–metal dichalcogenides material, has attracted numerous attentions of the applications in heterogeneous catalysis and electrochemical energy storage systems, due to its unique layered structure and electronic properties. Although many efforts have been endeavored on the development of MoS2–based nanomaterials, the low electronic conductivity, many obstacles such as the low catalytic efficiency and the low structural stability, still hinder the development of MoS2–based nanomaterials in energy conversion and storage. In this review, we summarize the preparation and modification strategies for tuning the intrinsic electronic structure of MoS2. Meanwhile, the recent progresses of MoS2–based nanomaterials for their applications in heterogeneous catalysis, as well as in lithium/sodium ion batteries, have been also summarized. Finally, the challenges and prospects of MoS2–based nanomaterials in the promising research areas are also discussed.

Abstract:The multi-layer 2D materials have attracted increasing interest because the intriguing properties can be achieved by various strategies, such as incorporating ions into the interlayer, turning angles between two layers, and applying strain, which may lead to wide applications in catalysis, ion-batteries, superconductors, and nanodevices. In this work, there is a proposal to tune the electronic and magnetic properties of MoS2 bilayer for spintronics by incorporating transition-metal elements into its interlayer (denoted as TM-MoS2) based on the density-functional theory (DFT) calculations. It is shown that TM-MoS2 is thermodynamically stable and can be achieved due to low incorporation energy. It is found that n-type doping or intrinsic semiconducting can be realized in MoS2 bilayer by controlling the incorporated transition-metal atoms, accompanied with a rich variety of magnetic orderings. It is further shown that the electronic and magnetic properties of TM-MoS2 can be substantially tuned by applying compression. Finally, it is demonstrated that the systems can be used as a spin filter, as supported by the spin-polarized transport calculation. The findings illustrate that the physical properties of layered materials can be controlled by simple interlayer incorporation and shed light on the application of TM-MoS2 as a fundamental building block for nanoelectronics and spintronics.
Layer-By-Layer Polyelectrolyte Assisted Growth of 2d Ultrathin Mos2 Nanosheets on Various 1d Carbons for Superior Li-Storage

Abstract:Transitional metal sulfide/carbon hybrids with well-defined structures could not only maximize the functional properties of each constituent but engender some unique synergistic effects, holding great promise for applications in Li-ion batteries and supercapacitors and for catalysis. Herein, a facile and versatile approach is developed to controllably grow 2D ultrathin MoS2 nanosheets with a large quantity of exposed edges onto various 1D carbons, including carbon nanotubes (CNTs), electrospun carbon nanofibers, and Te-nanowire-templated carbon nanofibers. The typical approach involves the employment of layer-by-layer (LBL) self-assembled polyelectrolyte, which controls spatially the uniform growth and orientation of ultrathin MoS2 nanosheets on these 1D carbons irrespective of their surface properties. Such unique structures of the as-prepared CNTs@MoS2 hybrid are significantly favorable for the fast diffusions of both Li-ions and electrons, satisfying the kinetic requirements of high-power lithium ion batteries. As a result, CNTs@MoS2 hybrids exhibit excellent electrochemical performances for lithium storage, including a high reversible capacity (1027 mAh g(-1)), high-rate capability (610 mAh g(-1) at 5 C), and excellent cycling stability (negligible capacity loss after 200 continuous cycles).

Abstract:Owing to unique structures and properties, 2D layered materials have exhibited great potentials for energy-related applications. Among these, 2D Bi-based layered materials which possess intriguing characteristics for energy conversion and storage systems have attracted tremendous attention. In this review, the structural and electronic properties of 2D Bi-based layered materials classified into four categories (unitary, binary, ternary and multinary) are introduced. Their promising applications in energy conversion and storage are reviewed in details, with particular emphasis on photocatalysis, electrocatalysis, solar cells, thermoelectrics, optoelectronics and rechargeable batteries. Finally, based on current research progress, future perspectives for exploring and developing advanced 2D Bi-based layered energy conversion and storage materials are presented.
Assembled Graphene Nanotubes Decorated by Hierarchical MoS2 Structures: Enhanced Lithium Storage and in Situ TEM Lithiation Study

Abstract:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has received considerable interest for electrochemical energy storage and conversion. In this work, we demonstrate a material on synthesis of a unique hierarchical hollow structure by growing layered MoS2 nanosheets on assembled graphene nanotubes via a template-sacrificed approach (named as graphene@MoS2 nanotubes). As a proof of concept, the graphene@MoS2 nanotubes as the anode materials of lithium-ion batteries exhibit excellent cycling performance at 400 mA g(-1) up to 120 cycles without considerable capacity loss (830 mA h g(-1), with 96.5% capacity retention) and high rate behavior (502 mA h g(-1) at 2000 mA g(-1)), which is far beyond than that of the pure MoS2 nanosheets and even graphene@MoS2 nanosheets composites. Furthermore, combined with in-situ TEM lithiation experiments, we find a novel conversion reaction mechanism of MoS2 anodes that Li ions induce structural destruction in c-direction following a dynamic layer-by-layer dissociation with Mo/Li2S composites left, rather than well-known multistep reaction in bulk phase. The first-principles computations verify that the surfacial relaxation of Li2S to form an anti-fluorite structure on higher electric conductive LixMoS(2) surface is the primarily thermodynamic driving force for activating the above-mentioned reaction. These results are envisaged to be helpful for designing durable conversion-type MoS2 anodes by surface engineering, and the hierarchical tubular feature further points out a new protocol for graphene based hybrid anode for enhanced lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:AbstractTwo‐dimensional (2D) heterostructured materials, combining the collective advantages of individual building blocks and synergistic properties, have spurred great interest as a new paradigm in materials science. The family of 2D transition‐metal carbides and nitrides, MXenes, has emerged as an attractive platform to construct functional materials with enhanced performance for diverse applications. Here, we synthesized 2D MoS2‐on‐MXene heterostructures through in situ sulfidation of Mo2TiC2Tx MXene. The computational results show that MoS2‐on‐MXene heterostructures have metallic properties. Moreover, the presence of MXene leads to enhanced Li and Li2S adsorption during the intercalation and conversion reactions. These characteristics render the as‐prepared MoS2‐on‐MXene heterostructures stable Li‐ion storage performance. This work paves the way to use MXene to construct 2D heterostructures for energy storage applications.
Layer-dependent Chemically Induced Phase Transition of Two-dimensional MoS2.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) with layered structures provide a unique platform for exploring the effect of number of layers on their fundamental properties. However, the thickness scaling effect on the chemical properties of these materials remains unexplored. Here, we explored the chemically induced phase transition of 2D molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) from both experimental and theoretical aspects and observed that the critical electron injection concentration and the duration required for the phase transition of 2D MoS2 increased with decreasing number of layers. We further revealed that the observed dependence originated from the layer-dependent density of states of 2H-MoS2 , which results in decreasing phase stability for 2H-MoS2 with increasing number of layers upon electron doping. Also, the much larger energy barrier for the phase transition of monolayer MoS2 induces the longer reaction time required for monolayer MoS2 as compared to multilayer MoS2 . The layer-dependent phase transition of 2D MoS2 allows for the chemical construction of semiconducting-metallic heterophase junctions and, subsequently, the fabrications of rectifying diodes and all 2D field effect transistors and thus opens a new avenue for building ultrathin electronic devices. In addition, these new findings elucidate how electronic structures affect the chemical properties of 2D TMDCs and, therefore, shed new light on the controllable chemical modulations of these emerging materials.

Abstract:Graphene-like two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) have been attracting a wide range of research interests. Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) is one of the most typical TMDCs. Its particular direct band gap of 1.8 eV in monolayer and layer dependence of band structure tackle the gapless problems of graphene, thus making it scientific and industrial importance. In this Review, we attempt to provide the latest development of optical and electronic properties, synthesis approaches, and potential applications of 2D MoS2. A roadmap towards fabricating hybrid structures based on MoS2 and graphene is highlighted, proposing ways to enhance properties of the individual component and broaden the range of functional applications in various fields, including flexible electronics, energy storage and harvesting as well as electro-chemical catalysis. Abstract:Molybdenum disulfide(MoS2 )has the same layer-stack structure as graphene and shows itself prospects in logic devices,due to its large bandgap and absence of dangling bonds.Besides,single-layer MoS2 with a direct bandgap has recently attracted researchers’interest in its potential applications in optoelectronics.We review the recent development of MoS2 ,electron transport in MoS2 transistors and its applications in electronics and optoelectronics.Other than MoS2 ,we also discuss some novel applications based on other members in two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides(TMDCs),especially WS2 and WSe2 .

Abstract:Hierarchical structured carbon@MoS2 (C@MoS2) microspheres and nanospheres composed of carbon-sandwiched monolayered MoS2 building blocks are synthesized through a facile one-pot polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) micelle-assisted hydrothermal route. The dimension and carbon content of C@MoS2 spheres are effectively controlled by singly adjusting the concentration of PVP, which plays the dual functions of soft-template and carbon source. As the anode materials of Li-ion batteries, C@MoS2 nanospheres present considerably higher capacity, better rate behavior and cycling stability than C@MoS2 microspheres. The reasons are attributed to the unique interconnected nanospherical morphology and the internal hierarchical construction of C@MoS2 nanospheres with expanded MoS2/carbon interlayer spacing.

Abstract:A novel strategy for the controlled synthesis of 2D MoS2/C hybrid nanosheets consisting of the alternative layer-by-layer interoverlapped single-layer MoS2 and mesoporous carbon (m-C) is demonstrated. Such special hybrid nanosheets with a maximized MoS2/m-C interface contact show very good performance for lithiumion batteries in terms of high reversible capacity, excellent rate capability, and outstanding cycling stability.

Abstract:The layered molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanostructured materials are of great interest for electrochemical energy storage and conversion and electrocatalytic water splitting. However, they still exhibit very limited performance because of their limited active sites. To create more efficient MoS2 materials, herein, we develop a simple yet efficient approach to a unique column-like MoS2 superstructure composed of edge-terminated MoS2 nanosheets (CLET MoS2). These MoS2 nanosheets as building blocks with fully exposed active edges are oriented in a preferred manner, rendering CLET MoS2 that exhibits excellent electrochemical performance in both lithium ion storage and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Compared with that of commercial MoS2, these hierarchical MoS2 superstructures possess much higher specific capacity and superior cycling performance for lithium ion storage and excellent electrocatalytic activity and stability for HER with a very low Tafel slope of 39 mV decade(-1), showing their great potential applications in lithium ion batteries and water splitting.

Abstract:Typical layered transition-metal chalcogenide materials, in particular layered molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanocomposites, have attracted increasing attention in recent years due to their excellent chemical and physical properties in various research fieldsHere, a general overview of synthetic MoS2 based nanocomposites via different preparation approaches and their applications in energy storage devices (Li-ion battery, Na-ion battery, and supercapacitor) is presented. The relationship between morphologies and the electrochemical performances of MoS2-based nanocomposites in the three typical and promising rechargeable systems is also discussed. Finally, perspectives on major challenges and opportunities faced by MoS2-based materials to address the practical problems of MoS2-based materials are presented.

Abstract:The development of a feasible and inexpensive strategy to obtain and utilize sustainable energy is an important issue for the sustainable development of human society. Over the past decade, significant progress has been made in the development of novel functional materials for energy conversion and storage. Owing to their unique physico‐chemical properties, 2D layered materials, such as graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides, have attracted great interest in energy‐related research. 1T‐MoS2 is a metallic phase of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) with extraordinary electronic conductivity, enlarged interlayer spacing, and more electrochemically active sites along the basal plane, which offers intriguing benefits for energy‐related applications compared to its semiconducting counterpart (2H‐MoS2). This review summarizes the preparation and structure–property relationships of 1T‐MoS2, as well as the underlying relations between the metallic (1T) and semiconducting (2H) phases of MoS2. Recent progress in the preparation and stabilization of 1T‐MoS2 materials and their applications for energy conversion and storage are discussed, including water splitting to form hydrogen via photo/electrocatalysis and electricity storage in lithium‐ion batteries, sodium‐ion batteries, magnesium‐ion batteries, and supercapacitors. Optimization strategies of 1T‐MoS2 to obtain enhanced practical properties based on theoretical calculations are also presented. Recent progress in the unique physico‐chemical features, preparation approaches and stabilization strategies of the metallic phase of 1T‐MoS2 materials are summarized in this paper. Their applications for energy conversion and storage including hydrogen evolution, batteries and supercapacitors are critically discussed. The theoretical perspectives and underlying design strategies for optimizing the structure‐related performances of 1T‐MoS2 are also highlighted.

Abstract:Abstract Architected materials that actively respond to external stimuli hold tantalizing prospects for applications in energy storage, wearable electronics, and bioengineering. Molybdenum disulfide, an excellent two-dimensional building block, is a promising candidate for lithium-ion battery anode. However, the stacked and brittle two-dimensional layered structure limits its rate capability and electrochemical stability. Here we report the dewetting-induced manufacturing of two-dimensional molybdenum disulfide nanosheets into a three-dimensional foam with a structural hierarchy across seven orders of magnitude. Our molybdenum disulfide foam provides an interpenetrating network for efficient charge transport, rapid ion diffusion, and mechanically resilient and chemically stable support for electrochemical reactions. These features induce a pseudocapacitive energy storage mechanism involving molybdenum redox reactions, confirmed by in-situ X-ray absorption near edge structure. The extraordinary electrochemical performance of molybdenum disulfide foam outperforms most reported molybdenum disulfide-based Lithium-ion battery anodes and state-of-the-art materials. This work opens promising inroads for various applications where special properties arise from hierarchical architecture.

Abstract:The quest for clean, sustainable energy sources was prompted by the fast depletion of fossil fuels and the world's expanding energy requirements. To store renewable energy, it is important that effective energy storage devices such as supercapacitor be manufactured. offer a promising avenue for fast-charging, energy storage, and long-life cycles but maximizing their energy density remains a problem. This study theoretically explores the intrinsic Quantum capacitance ( of MoS 2 in the 2H phase with a few number of layers and how factors like electronic structure and density of states influence its capacitance behavior. In the present work, the first principles analysis utilizing computational modelling with Density Functional Theory (DFT) has been employed to investigate the and surface charge density (σ) of MoS 2 . By explaining the connection between MoS 2 's electrical and structural properties with its , valuable insights for optimizing it's performance were obtained. Both the density of states (DOS) and the increase with the number of layers. Among the observed structures the highest value of is observed for the three layered structure of 2H-MoS 2 (2H3L-MoS 2 ) at +1 V which is 1615.14 μF cm -2 . Investigating the mechanical stability of optimized structure (2H3L-MoS 2 ), a high Young's modulus of 180.46 GPa is observed for 2H3L structure. Hence, 2H-phase of MoS 2 can be used as an excellent anode material for asymmetric and flexible electronic devices.

Abstract:Two-dimensional layered molybdenum disulfide and molybdenum trioxide (α-MoO3) have fascinating potential for complementary energy storage and conversion applications due to their high surface area and multiple oxidation states of Mo. We report a novel hierarchical 1T/2H MoS2/MoO3 nanocomposite prepared by a scalable liquid-phase exfoliation and subsequent facile hydrothermal route. The growth of MoS2 onto 2D α-MoO3 creates a unique 2D/2D hierarchical structure, which reduces the aggregation of α-MoO3 nanoflakes, improves the electrical conductivity of the composite electrode, and activates inert basal plane of MoS2. The electrochemical measurements revealed that such a composite possessed higher specific capacitance and promoted capacitance retention in a symmetric supercapacitor assembly. The remarkably enhanced visible-light-driven photocatalytic performance of hybrid hierarchical architecture can be attributed to a few distinctive synergistic effects, including activated inert basal plane, facilitated interfacial charge transfer, and peculiar ultrathin nanosheet framework with a large surface area and high content of exposed edge sites.
