Abstract:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has received considerable interest for electrochemical energy storage and conversion. In this work, we demonstrate a material on synthesis of a unique hierarchical hollow structure by growing layered MoS2 nanosheets on assembled graphene nanotubes via a template-sacrificed approach (named as graphene@MoS2 nanotubes). As a proof of concept, the graphene@MoS2 nanotubes as the anode materials of lithium-ion batteries exhibit excellent cycling performance at 400 mA g(-1) up to 120 cycles without considerable capacity loss (830 mA h g(-1), with 96.5% capacity retention) and high rate behavior (502 mA h g(-1) at 2000 mA g(-1)), which is far beyond than that of the pure MoS2 nanosheets and even graphene@MoS2 nanosheets composites. Furthermore, combined with in-situ TEM lithiation experiments, we find a novel conversion reaction mechanism of MoS2 anodes that Li ions induce structural destruction in c-direction following a dynamic layer-by-layer dissociation with Mo/Li2S composites left, rather than well-known multistep reaction in bulk phase. The first-principles computations verify that the surfacial relaxation of Li2S to form an anti-fluorite structure on higher electric conductive LixMoS(2) surface is the primarily thermodynamic driving force for activating the above-mentioned reaction. These results are envisaged to be helpful for designing durable conversion-type MoS2 anodes by surface engineering, and the hierarchical tubular feature further points out a new protocol for graphene based hybrid anode for enhanced lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:The preparation and electrochemical storage behavior of MoS2 nanodotsmore precisely single-layered ultrasmall nanoplatesembedded in carbon nanowires has been studied. The preparation is achieved by an electrospinning process that can be easily scaled up. The rate performance and cycling stability of both lithium and sodium storage were found to be outstanding. The storage behavior is, moreover, highly exciting from a fundamental point of view, as the differences between the usual storage modesinsertion, conversion, interfacial storageare beneficially blurred. The restriction to ultrasmall reaction domains allows for an almost diffusion-less and nucleation-free conversion, thereby resulting in a high capacity and a remarkable cycling performance.

Abstract:Transitional metal sulfide/carbon hybrids with well-defined structures could not only maximize the functional properties of each constituent but engender some unique synergistic effects, holding great promise for applications in Li-ion batteries and supercapacitors and for catalysis. Herein, a facile and versatile approach is developed to controllably grow 2D ultrathin MoS2 nanosheets with a large quantity of exposed edges onto various 1D carbons, including carbon nanotubes (CNTs), electrospun carbon nanofibers, and Te-nanowire-templated carbon nanofibers. The typical approach involves the employment of layer-by-layer (LBL) self-assembled polyelectrolyte, which controls spatially the uniform growth and orientation of ultrathin MoS2 nanosheets on these 1D carbons irrespective of their surface properties. Such unique structures of the as-prepared CNTs@MoS2 hybrid are significantly favorable for the fast diffusions of both Li-ions and electrons, satisfying the kinetic requirements of high-power lithium ion batteries. As a result, CNTs@MoS2 hybrids exhibit excellent electrochemical performances for lithium storage, including a high reversible capacity (1027 mAh g(-1)), high-rate capability (610 mAh g(-1) at 5 C), and excellent cycling stability (negligible capacity loss after 200 continuous cycles).

Abstract:AbstractTwo‐dimensional (2D) heterostructured materials, combining the collective advantages of individual building blocks and synergistic properties, have spurred great interest as a new paradigm in materials science. The family of 2D transition‐metal carbides and nitrides, MXenes, has emerged as an attractive platform to construct functional materials with enhanced performance for diverse applications. Here, we synthesized 2D MoS2‐on‐MXene heterostructures through in situ sulfidation of Mo2TiC2Tx MXene. The computational results show that MoS2‐on‐MXene heterostructures have metallic properties. Moreover, the presence of MXene leads to enhanced Li and Li2S adsorption during the intercalation and conversion reactions. These characteristics render the as‐prepared MoS2‐on‐MXene heterostructures stable Li‐ion storage performance. This work paves the way to use MXene to construct 2D heterostructures for energy storage applications.

Abstract:A facile strategy was designed for the in situ synthesis of MoS2 nanospheres on functionalized graphene nanoplates (MoS2@f-graphene) for use as lithium-ion battery anode materials. A modified Birch reduction was used to exfoliate graphite into few-layer graphene followed by modification with functional groups. Compared to the most common approach of mixing MoS2 and reduced graphene oxide, our approach provides a way to circumvent the harsh oxidation and destruction of the carbon basal planes. In this process, alkylcarboxyl functional groups on the functionalized graphene (f-graphene) serve as sites where MoS2 nanospheres crystallize, and thus create bridges between the MoS2 nanospheres and the graphene layers to effectively facilitate electronic transport and to avoid both the aggregation of MoS2 and the restacking of graphene. As anode materials, this unique MoS2@f-graphene heterostructure has a high specific capacity of 1173 mAh g-1 at a current density of 100 mA g-1 and a good rate capacity (910 mAh g-1 at 1600 mA g-1).

Abstract:An easy and ecofriendly solid-phase self-sulfuration method is developed to embed ultrathin MoS2 nanosheets within N-/S-doped mesoporous carbon (MoS2@mC) through solvent-free template-assisted pyrolysis. The resultant MoS2@mC features multiple structural and compositional add-in merits, including nanoconfined MoS2, a mesoporous framework, and N-/S-doped graphitized carbon, thus exhibiting improved reversible discharge capacity and rate capability in lithium storage. The present work thus paves a green way to synthesize other kinds of metal sulfides@mC composite materials for possible practical applications.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are one of the most potential energy storage systems because of their high theoretical density, environmental friendliness. However, the practical application of Li-S batteries is currently hampered by several intrinsic problems including the shuttle effects of polysulfides and sluggish electrode reaction kinetics. Herein, a flower-like MoS 2 nanosheets confined and in situ grown inside yolk-shell hollow mesoporous carbon spheres (abbreviated as MoS 2 @YHMCs) was fabricated as advanced sulfur immobilizer, which can effectively inhibit shuttle effect and conversion of polysulfides. The yolk-shell hollow mesoporous carbon spheres can restrain the volume variation during lithiation-delithiation processes, expose abundant active interfaces and furnish a shortened ion/electron transmission route for facilitated redox reactions. Furthermore, the few layered MoS 2 nanosheets have strong LiPS adsorption and catalyzation, thereby achieving rapid redox conversion and enhanced reaction kinetics. Owing to these structural advantages, the delicately-designed MoS 2 @S@YHMCs cathode shows good Li-S battery performance, i.e., high initial discharge capacity (1145 mAh g −1 ), desirable rate capability (770 mAh g −1 at 4 C), and superior cycling performance (583 mAh g −1 after 200 cycles at 1 C), suggesting great application prospects in the development of Li-S batteries.

Abstract:Ultrathin nanosheets made by transition metal dichalcogenide show the potential as high-capacity anode materials for lithium ion batteries (LIBs). However, the tendency of restacking individual nanosheet due to strong van der Waals force, a dramatic volume variation upon continuous cycling, as well as poor intrinsic conductivity greatly restrict their practical applications. In this work, high content metallic phase molybdenum disulfide (1T/2H-MoS2) ultrathin nanosheets with higher intrinsic conductivity and extended interlayer distance are vertically assembled on the outer surface of chemically activated hollow carbon nanospheres (CAHCSs) through a facile solvothermal method. Phase structure, chemical composition, and microstructure studies show that the obtained composites (/2H-MoS2) have optimized structural and compositional advantages to efficiently store lithium ions. When evaluated as anodes for LIBs, the /2H-MoS2 electrode show excellent fast and stable lithium storage properties. In specific, the /2H -MoS2 electrode delivers a large reversible capacity of 831 mAh g−1 at 1 A g−1 after 200 cycles. At a higher current density of 2 A g−1, the /2H-MoS2 electrode has a reversible capacity of 863 mAh g−1. The proposed electrode design strategy provides an alternative route to promote the ion storage in transition-metal-dichalcogenides-based materials.

Abstract:Nowadays, molybdenum disulfide is gaining increasing attention due to its unique properties and diverse areas of application. In this study, a mesh with a large area and a structure similar to that of MoS2 were synthesized using a simple one-pot synthesis method. The results revealed that irregular MoS2 nanoparticles with layer spacing (⁓0.92 nm) larger than that of the bulk MoS2 were stacked on a 3D mesh structure similar to that of MoS2 with submicron-sized macropores. And in lithium ion battery applications, the MoS2 nanoparticles obtained in this study significantly improved the electrochemical performance of an anode material. As a result of this improvement, the problems of substantial volume changes and low utilization efficiency of active materials during the charge/discharge cycle could be solved. The reversible cycle capacity of the active material gradually increased till it stabilized, and after 100 cycles, with reversible capacities of 877 and 665 mAh g−1 at 0.1 and 0.5 A g−1 were maintained and the rate performance was found to be excellent.

Abstract:As one of the stellar 2D materials, MoS2 remains in the spotlight for its multiple physical and chemical traits that contribute to its high theoretical capacity. But its potential as anode for lithium-ion batteries is hampered by its poor electrical conductivity and its low mechanical stability after cycling. In our research work, we manage to correct these flaws by fabricating MoS2 nanosheets with a physically-lengthened interlayer space through simple plasma evaporation and a gas–solid reaction at a low temperature. The as-synthesized MoS2 nanosheets are uniform, with a BET surface area of 80.42 m2 g−1 and an expanded interlayer distance of 0.702 nm. This material exhibits a high capacity of 860 mAh g−1 at 100 mA g−1, a great rate capability, and stability. Its outstanding electrochemical performance is encouraged by the improved ion conductivity of the enlarged interlayers due to two factors: 1) affording plenty of active Li+ storage sites for fast intercalation/de-intercalation, avoiding sluggish transport, and 2) low energy barrier for reversible lithium insertion at high current densities. The structural configuration is well maintained even after the structure modification during long cycling, where the pulverized Mo nanoparticles are uniformly distributed.

Abstract:MoS 2 nanosheets consist of multiple S-Mo-S trilayers with large interlayer spacing, which could allow facile Li-ion insertion/extraction. However, MoS 2 nanosheets are easily curled and randomly stacked due to high surface energy of 2D nanosheets, which hinders fast ion transportation. In addition, intrinsic electronic conductivity of MoS 2 is limited. Therefore, enhancements of both ionic and electronic conductivity of MoS 2 are greatly demanded for its application in Li-ion batteries. Here, we report a cost-effective and facile hydrothermal synthesis of 3D nanoflower-like MoS 2 /C anode materials, which avoids random stacking of nanosheets and improves the electronic conductivity of MoS 2 . The nanoflower-like MoS 2 /C exhibits large reversible specific capacity (724 mAh g −1 ) and high initial coulombic efficiency (79.82%). Moreover, excellent capacity retention (97.98%) after 500-cycle charge/discharge has been achieved at 1 A g −1 .

Abstract:MoS2/graphene composites were synthesized through the concurrent reducing of (NH4)2MoS4 and graphene oxide sheets with assistance of different cationic surfactants (DTAB, OTAB and TBAB) followed by heat treatment in a nitrogen atmosphere. The effects of the three cationic surfactants on the microstructures and electrochemical performances of the composites for reversible lithium storage were investigated. The MoS2 in the composites prepared with assistance of DTAB or OTAB displays single-/few-layer structure, while the layered MoS2 sheets with about 6–7 layers are observed in the composite prepared with assistance of TBAB. The former two composites exhibit greatly enhanced electrochemical performance for reversible Li+ storage. In particular, MoS2/graphene composite prepared with assistance of OTAB delivered a high reversible capacity of 1056 mA h g−1 with excellent cycle stability and good rate capability. The significant improvement in the electrochemical performances is attributed to the roubest composite structure and the synergistic interactions between graphene and single-/few-layer MoS2. This work also presented a facile process to prepare MoS2/graphene composites, in which the layer number of MoS2 sheets could be adjusted to a certain extent by using different cationic surfactants.
Hydrochloric Acid-Assisted Synthesis of Highly Dispersed MoS2 Nanoflowers as the Cathode Material for Mg-Li Batteries

Abstract:The layered material MoS2 has significant potential as a cathode material for hybrid Mg2+/Li+ batteries (MLIBs) due to its fast two-dimensional ion diffusion channel. However, the low capacity and poor cycling stability limit the practical application of MoS2. Herein, highly dispersed MoS2 nanoflowers with a large Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) area of 118.25 m(2)g(-1) and a large lattice spacing of 0.65 nm are synthesized by a one-step hydrothermal method. The obtained MoS2 nanoflowers deliver a remarkable reversible capacity of 321 mA h g(-1 )at 0.1 A g(-1). Notably, it displays an impressive cycling stability with a reversible capacity of 103 mA h g(-1). over 600 consecutive cycles at 1 A g(-1). The favorable electrochemical properties of the MoS 2 are attributed to the large BET area and increased lattice spacing that are more conducive to the full contact between the electrolyte and the material, thus promoting the diffusion of ions and improving the reaction kinetics. The results of the present study offer an idea to prepare highly dispersed MoS2 with enhanced capacity and durability.
Novel C/MoS2 hollow nanocomposites enhance lithium storage in battery anodes

Abstract:With society's rapid progress, there is an increasing need for electricity among individuals, but the prevailing source of electricity is still mainly obtained through the burning of nonrenewable fossil fuels, which are not renewable and pose serious environmental hazards. Lithium-ion batteries are used widely for excellent rechargeable capabilities and high energy density. Recently, researchers have become increasingly interested in transition metal sulfides owing to their cost-effectiveness and remarkable specific capacity. However, their commercialization has been hindered by the expansion of material volume and low electrical conductivity during charging and discharging. We have successfully designed and synthesized MoS2 nanosheets loaded on carbon spheres with a 3D hollow structure starting from SiO2 as a template. Due to the doping of carbon materials and particular 3D hollow structures, the optimal C/MoS2-0.3 hollow nanocomposites exhibit excellent electrochemical performance. Following exposure to over 900 cycles at a 0.5 A g-1 ampere density, the materials exhibited an exceptional 958.50 mAh g-1 reversible capacity, demonstrating their remarkable performance.

Abstract:Two dimensional (2D) layered MoS2/graphene and MoS2/XC-72 composites are synthesized by a facile aqueous reduction and heat treatment in N2, and characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM and HRTEM. It is found that the 2D MoS2 nanosheets with ∼6 layers are well dispersed on the crumpled graphene surface and the curved layered MoS2 with ∼10 layers coated on XC-72 carbon. Due to the outstanding properties of graphene and the synergistic interaction between 2D MoS2 and graphene nanosheets, the 2D MoS2/graphene composite exhibits a very high reversible capacity of 1060 mAh g−1 with excellent cycle stability and significantly enhanced rate capability compared with pristine MoS2 and the MoS2/XC-72 composite. The synthesis presented in this work can also be the blueprint for the facile production of the 2D MoS2/graphene composite on a relatively large scale.

Abstract:The development of electrode materials with the synergistic effects of good chemical stability and high electrical conductivity has improved the sluggish ion kinetics and severe capacity degradation of rechargeable lithium batteries. Herein, a multifunctional heterostructure material (MoS3-Ti3C2Tx) comprising a functionalized MXene (Ti3C2Tx) and amorphous MoS3 is prepared by a scalable electrostatic self-assembly method. Remarkably, as lithium-ion battery anodes, the resultant MoS3-Ti3C2Tx not only exhibits increased electrochemical activity, accelerated lithium-ion diffusion and fast charge transfer kinetics but also shows high specific capacity, excellent rate performance and long-term cycling stability. By virtue of these merits, MoS3-Ti3C2Tx offers an excellent reversible capacity of 1043 mAh g−1 at 200 mA g−1 and exhibited a capacity of 568 mAh g−1 at a current density of 2 A g−1 after 1000 cycles. When acting as the cathode for lithium-sulfur batteries, the amorphous MoS3 anchored on MXene demonstrates high capture and catalytic activity towards polysulfide conversion. Accordingly, the optimized electrode exhibits a capacity of 836 mAh g−1 at 0.2C after 100 cycles and a satisfactory rate performance of 463 mAh g−1 at 2C after 400 cycles. Moreover, the associated conversion mechanism is studied by ex situ XPS. These results demonstrate that heterostructure composites constructed by an amorphous sulfide and surface functionalized MXene are feasible electrode materials for both lithium-sulfur batteries and lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Ion crystal ammonium tetrathiomolybdateas (NH4)2MoS4 with the octahedral structure and high hardness could efficiently transfer and magnify the impacting and shearing force generated from ball-milling process to the surface of expandable graphite (EG) to accelerate its exfoliation and fragmentation. The obtained massive precursor comprised of nano-(NH4)2MoS4 and carbon nanosheets with few layers could transfer into MoS2/C sandwiched nanocomposites after subsequent calcination, which owns satisfied Li-storage performance even at relatively high current density.
Facile Synthesis of Carbon-Coated MoS2 Nanorods with Enhanced Lithium Storage Properties

Abstract:In this work, we report a facile approach to mass produce carbon-coated MoS2 (C-MoS2) nanorods with high uniformity. The C-MoS2 nanorods are prepared using MoO3 nanorods as the precursor via a sulfidation and subsequent chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of an amorphous carbon layer. When evaluated as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries, the C-MoS2 nanorods exhibit improved reversibility and cycling performance compared with the bare MoS2 nanorods. A high capacity of 621mAhg−1 can be retained after 80cycles at a current density of 200mAg−1. The rate capability of the C-MoS2 nanorods is also improved. The carbon layer is believed to better retain the structure upon prolonged cycling and to improve the conductivity of the material. This simple strategy using gas-phase sulfidation and CVD carbon coating could also be applied to prepare other nanostructured carbon-coated metal sulfides.
