Abstract:Coupling two-dimensional (2D) electroactive species with 3D carbon substrates is a very promising strategy to fabricate advanced electrodes for high-performance flexible electrical energy storage devices. However, the intractable coupling between them has prevented the wide applications of such a strategy. Herein, we develop a facile one-step hydrothermal synthesis technique to directly construct NiS-MoS2 heteronanosheet arrays on carbon cloth (NiS-MoS2 HNSAs/CC) via introducing sodium dodecyl sulfate as the surfactant together with Ni, Mo, and S sources. Such vertically aligned nanosheet heterostructures constructed an integrated 3D open framework, helping improve the performance of electrodes from various aspects. Consequently, the NiS-MoS2 HNSAs/CC electrode achieves a very high areal capacity and specific capacity (0.76 mAh.cm(-2) and 271.7 mAh.g(-1), respectively, at a current density of 2.5 mA.cm(-2)) and good rate capability (39% at 40 mA.cm(-2)). With the NiS-MoS2 HNSAs as a positive electrode and typical activated carbon as a negative electrode, the fabricated solid-state hybrid capacitors have a high output cell voltage of 1.6 V and thus deliver a high energy density of 3.75 mWh.cm(-3) at a power density of 31.6 mW.cm(-3) with excellent flexibility and charging discharging stability.

Abstract:Transitional metal sulfide/carbon hybrids with well-defined structures could not only maximize the functional properties of each constituent but engender some unique synergistic effects, holding great promise for applications in Li-ion batteries and supercapacitors and for catalysis. Herein, a facile and versatile approach is developed to controllably grow 2D ultrathin MoS2 nanosheets with a large quantity of exposed edges onto various 1D carbons, including carbon nanotubes (CNTs), electrospun carbon nanofibers, and Te-nanowire-templated carbon nanofibers. The typical approach involves the employment of layer-by-layer (LBL) self-assembled polyelectrolyte, which controls spatially the uniform growth and orientation of ultrathin MoS2 nanosheets on these 1D carbons irrespective of their surface properties. Such unique structures of the as-prepared CNTs@MoS2 hybrid are significantly favorable for the fast diffusions of both Li-ions and electrons, satisfying the kinetic requirements of high-power lithium ion batteries. As a result, CNTs@MoS2 hybrids exhibit excellent electrochemical performances for lithium storage, including a high reversible capacity (1027 mAh g(-1)), high-rate capability (610 mAh g(-1) at 5 C), and excellent cycling stability (negligible capacity loss after 200 continuous cycles).
Assembled Graphene Nanotubes Decorated by Hierarchical MoS2 Structures: Enhanced Lithium Storage and in Situ TEM Lithiation Study

Abstract:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has received considerable interest for electrochemical energy storage and conversion. In this work, we demonstrate a material on synthesis of a unique hierarchical hollow structure by growing layered MoS2 nanosheets on assembled graphene nanotubes via a template-sacrificed approach (named as graphene@MoS2 nanotubes). As a proof of concept, the graphene@MoS2 nanotubes as the anode materials of lithium-ion batteries exhibit excellent cycling performance at 400 mA g(-1) up to 120 cycles without considerable capacity loss (830 mA h g(-1), with 96.5% capacity retention) and high rate behavior (502 mA h g(-1) at 2000 mA g(-1)), which is far beyond than that of the pure MoS2 nanosheets and even graphene@MoS2 nanosheets composites. Furthermore, combined with in-situ TEM lithiation experiments, we find a novel conversion reaction mechanism of MoS2 anodes that Li ions induce structural destruction in c-direction following a dynamic layer-by-layer dissociation with Mo/Li2S composites left, rather than well-known multistep reaction in bulk phase. The first-principles computations verify that the surfacial relaxation of Li2S to form an anti-fluorite structure on higher electric conductive LixMoS(2) surface is the primarily thermodynamic driving force for activating the above-mentioned reaction. These results are envisaged to be helpful for designing durable conversion-type MoS2 anodes by surface engineering, and the hierarchical tubular feature further points out a new protocol for graphene based hybrid anode for enhanced lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:The nanocomposites of MoS2 nanosheets and microporous nitrogen-doped carbon dodecahedron (MNCD) are prepared through the pyrolysis of metal-organic framework (MOF) and subsequent growth of MoS2. The porous and active surface of MNCDs enables uniform growth of ultrathin MoS2 nanosheets. When the MNCD@MoS2 composite is used as the anode material of Li-ion batteries, a reversible capacity of 915 mAh g(-1) can be obtained even at the extremely high current density of 10 A g(-1). The ultrafast charge/discharge ability of MNCD@MoS2 can be attributed to its unique core-shell structure with the inner MNCDs serving as the reservoir of Li-ions and transport media of electrons. Abstract:Metallic lithium (Li) has attracted much attention as anode for high-energy-density batteries because of its ultrahigh specific capacity (3860mAhg−1) and the lowest electrochemical potential. Uncontrolled Li dendrite growth gives rise to serious safety hazards with poor cycle life and low coulombic efficiency. Metal-organic framework (MOF) nanosheets modified electrodes are designed to inhabit Li dendrite growth with improved electrochemical performance. Due to high surface area and plentiful polar surface functional groups, MOF nanosheets possess enhanced electrolyte uptake capabilities and improved adhesive interactions with Li-ions, which facilitates well-distributed homogeneous Li ionic flux. A remarkable coulombic efficiency of 98% for over 180 cycles at a current density of 2.0mAcm−2 and a cycle capacity of 1.0mAhcm−2 is achieved. This study may pave a way for obtaining high-performance metallic Li batteries with a wide variety of MOFs-based materials.

Abstract:Layered stacking and highly porous N, P co-doped Mo2 C/C nanosheets are prepared from a stable Mo-enhanced hydrogel. The hydrogel is formed through the ultrafast cross-linking of phosphomolybdic acid and chitosan. During the reduction of the composite hydrogel framework under inert gas protection, highly porous N and P co-doped carbon nanosheets are produced with the in situ formation of ultrafine Mo2 C nanoparticles highly distributed throughout the nanosheets which are entangled via a hierarchical lamellar infrastructure. This unique architecture of the N, P co-doped Mo2 C/C nanosheets tremendously promote the electrochemical activity and operate stability with high specific capacity and extremely stable cycling. In particular, this versatile synthetic strategy can also be extended to other polyoxometalate (such as phosphotungstic acid) to provide greater opportunities for the controlled fabrication of novel hierarchical nanostructures for next-generation high performance energy storage applications.

Abstract:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has been intensively investigated for its high theoretical capacity as an advanced anode material for lithium storage. However, the low electronic conductivity and frail layered structure give rise to its poor cycling stability and low rate performance. Herein, by taking advantages of the porous structure and the high N content of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) derivatives, a facile and scalable method combining electrospinning and following a hydrothermal process was developed to fabricate MoS2-based composite fibers, in which ultrathin MoS2 nanoplates were vertically assembled on the polyacrylonitrile-MOF-derived N-doped porous carbon nanofibers (PCNF). As expected, benefiting from the hierarchical structure of PCNF and the synergies between MoS2 and PCNF, the obtained PCNF@MoS2 exhibited high capacity and cycling performance in a lithium battery.

Abstract:Ultrathin nanosheets made by transition metal dichalcogenide show the potential as high-capacity anode materials for lithium ion batteries (LIBs). However, the tendency of restacking individual nanosheet due to strong van der Waals force, a dramatic volume variation upon continuous cycling, as well as poor intrinsic conductivity greatly restrict their practical applications. In this work, high content metallic phase molybdenum disulfide (1T/2H-MoS2) ultrathin nanosheets with higher intrinsic conductivity and extended interlayer distance are vertically assembled on the outer surface of chemically activated hollow carbon nanospheres (CAHCSs) through a facile solvothermal method. Phase structure, chemical composition, and microstructure studies show that the obtained composites (/2H-MoS2) have optimized structural and compositional advantages to efficiently store lithium ions. When evaluated as anodes for LIBs, the /2H-MoS2 electrode show excellent fast and stable lithium storage properties. In specific, the /2H -MoS2 electrode delivers a large reversible capacity of 831 mAh g−1 at 1 A g−1 after 200 cycles. At a higher current density of 2 A g−1, the /2H-MoS2 electrode has a reversible capacity of 863 mAh g−1. The proposed electrode design strategy provides an alternative route to promote the ion storage in transition-metal-dichalcogenides-based materials.

Abstract:The design and construction of advanced electrode materials is important to the development of high-performance electrochemical energy storage devices. In this paper, V-doped 1T MoS2 nanosheets with a large layer spacing are grown on carbon cloth (CC) via a one-step hydrothermal method. The resulting material features abundant edge sites and active centers, and its large layer spacing facilitates the interlayer shuttle of Na+. Doping with V buffers the volume change and maintains the integrity of MoS2. The layered structure of the composite featuring CC as a conductive substrate effectively prevents the agglomeration of MoS2 during the electrochemical process. When used as an anode material for a Na+ battery, the material displays a high first-cycle irreversible discharge specific capacity of 1234.9 mAh g-1. A specific capacity of 453.2 mAh g-1 is obtained after 100 cycles at a current density of 200 mA g-1. This work provides an effective and eco-friendly route toward obtaining superior MoS2 electrodes for high-performance Na+ storage.

Abstract:2H phase MoS 2 with a two-dimensional nanostructure, high chemical stability and large theoretical capacity has been considered as a potential anode material for lithium-ion batteries. However, some practical problems hinder the direct use of 2H-MoS 2 for lithium storage, such as its volume expansion effect that leads to capacity loss and its semiconductor properties that cannot provide sufficient conductivity. Herein, the surface of an MXene with abundant surface groups was modified with CTAB to promote its ability to adsorb MoO 4 2− anions, and then 2H-MoS 2 with a few layers was directly grown on the surface of MXene sheets vertically. Thanks to the conductive MXene sheets and the vertically-supported high-capacity MoS 2 on them, the as-obtained composite MXene@MoS 2 offers enhanced performance in specific capacity, long cycling stability and high rate capability. A reversible specific capacity of 1198 mA h g −1 was retained after 100 cycles at 200 mA g −1 and a specific capacity of 717 mA h g −1 was exhibited at 8000 mA g −1 .

Abstract:Smart design and construction of advanced electrodes are crucial for the development of new electrochemical energy storage systems. In this study, we realized hollow 1T MoS2 arrays grown on carbon cloth via a template-free solvothermal method. Hollow MoS2 arrays, with diameters of 400-500 nm, are composed of curved MoS2 nanosheets. This well-designed structure and the introduction of metallic phase MoS2 can improve electrical conductivity, shorten the electron/sodium ion diffusion, and accommodate the large volume changes during cycling. Due to these features, when employed as an anode of sodium ion batteries, the hollow 1T MoS2 array electrode delivers superior sodium ion storage properties, including enhanced cycling stability (576 mA h g(-1) after 200 cycles at 200 mA g(-1)) and high rate capability (276 mA h g(-1) at high current density of 2 A g(-1)). Our study may guide the synthesis of other nanostructured metal sulfide anodes for electrochemical energy applications.

Abstract:An ingenious design and a controllable architecture are critical for the construction of flexible electrodes. In this study, we realized the enriched nanorods on carbon cloth as templates by controlling the growth of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and finally formed hollow CoS2@MoS2 nanotube arrays after postprocessing. The outer layer is staggered interconnected MoS2 nanosheets with gaps between them, providing rich active points for electrochemical reaction. The hierarchical tubular structure and core–shell system significantly improves the electrical conductivity, promotes the diffusion of lithium ions, and has a good buffering effect on the volume change. Therefore, it exhibits an excellent lithium storage capacity with an areal specific capacity as high as 2.35 mAh cm–2 after 100 cycles at a current density of 0.5 mA cm–2. Furthermore, it reaches 1.55 mAh cm–2 in the full-cell test at 5 mA cm–2. At the same time, its strong flexibility enables stable capacity output in pouch cells. In this regard, our research provides an idea for the application of flexible devices.

Abstract:Metallic phase molybdenum disulfide (1 T MoS 2 ) has been extensively investigated as a promising energy storage material due to its various fascinating physical properties and potential for excellent performance. On this basis, 1 T MoS 2 nanosheets were grown on the accordion-like graphene oxide (GO) via a facile hydrothermal method for use as an anode of lithium-ion batteries. The content of 1 T phase MoS 2 was regulated by varying the amount of urea used during synthesis. When 1 g of urea was added to modulate the MoS 2 /GO (1 T MoS 2 /GO (1 g)), the metallic content of the MoS 2 reached a remarkable level of 81.12%. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of the two materials, the 1 T MoS 2 /GO (1 g) electrode has a first specific charging/discharging capacity of 1612 mA h g −1 at a current density of 0.1 A g −1 and maintained a specific capacity of 774 mA h g −1 after cycling for 60 cycles at high current density (1 A g −1 ). These results highlight enhanced electrochemical performance and cycling stability achieved with the utilization of this novel composite electrode.

Phase-engineering strategy of MoS2 nanosheets embedded in Bronze-TiO2 nanobelts for boosting lithium storage

Abstract:Regulating the molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) anodes with controllable phase and structure shows promising application for advanced lithium-ion storage performance. Herein, phase- and structure-regulated 1T@2H MoS2 nanosheet @TiO2–B nanobelts are synthesized via a facile hydrothermal and ammoniation strategy. The stable 1T@2H MoS2 is revealed by the formation of N–Mo covalent bonds via subtle structural analysis, including XPS, Raman and TEM analysis. TiO2 nanobelts serve as the backbone for MoS2 nanosheets to form highly active edged nanostructure. As a proof-of-concept study, this well-devised 1T@2H MoS2@TiO2–B electrode delivers much higher capacities of 830 mA h g−1 at 100 mA g−1 after 200 cycles. Even at a large rate of 2000 mA g−1, the reversible capacity was still maintained at 530 mA h g−1 after 1000 cycles. In addition, the EIS, GITT and pseudocapacitance analyses further demonstrate the introduced 1T MoS2 not only boost the lithium-ion diffusion coefficient, but also modify the electrochemical kinetics of the composite anodes. This concept of phase engineering strategy will open opportunities for advanced energy storage applications and beyond.

Abstract:As one of the stellar 2D materials, MoS2 remains in the spotlight for its multiple physical and chemical traits that contribute to its high theoretical capacity. But its potential as anode for lithium-ion batteries is hampered by its poor electrical conductivity and its low mechanical stability after cycling. In our research work, we manage to correct these flaws by fabricating MoS2 nanosheets with a physically-lengthened interlayer space through simple plasma evaporation and a gas–solid reaction at a low temperature. The as-synthesized MoS2 nanosheets are uniform, with a BET surface area of 80.42 m2 g−1 and an expanded interlayer distance of 0.702 nm. This material exhibits a high capacity of 860 mAh g−1 at 100 mA g−1, a great rate capability, and stability. Its outstanding electrochemical performance is encouraged by the improved ion conductivity of the enlarged interlayers due to two factors: 1) affording plenty of active Li+ storage sites for fast intercalation/de-intercalation, avoiding sluggish transport, and 2) low energy barrier for reversible lithium insertion at high current densities. The structural configuration is well maintained even after the structure modification during long cycling, where the pulverized Mo nanoparticles are uniformly distributed.

Abstract:An easy and ecofriendly solid-phase self-sulfuration method is developed to embed ultrathin MoS2 nanosheets within N-/S-doped mesoporous carbon (MoS2@mC) through solvent-free template-assisted pyrolysis. The resultant MoS2@mC features multiple structural and compositional add-in merits, including nanoconfined MoS2, a mesoporous framework, and N-/S-doped graphitized carbon, thus exhibiting improved reversible discharge capacity and rate capability in lithium storage. Abstract:Owing to the layered structure and high theoretical capacity, MoS2 has attracted more and more interest as a potential anode material for lithium-ion batteries. However, it suffers from rapid capacity decay and low rate capability. In this work, we introduce a novel hierarchical material consisting of ultrathin MoS2 nanosheets grown on the surface of an active carbon fiber (ACF) cloth fabricated by a facile morphogenetic process. The ACF cloth acts as both a template and a stabilizer. The obtained MoS2/ACF cloth composite possesses hierarchical porosity and an interconnected framework. Serving as a free-standing and binder-free anode, it shows high specific capacity and excellent reversibility. A discharge capacity as high as 971 mA h g (1) is attained at a current density of 0.1 A g (1), and the capacity fade is only 0.15% per cycle within 90 cycles. Even after 200 cycles at a high current density of 0.5 A g(-1), the composite still shows a capacity of 418 mA h g(-1). The superior electrochemical performance of MoS2/ACF can be attributed to its robust structure and to the synergistic effects of ultrathin MoS2 nanosheets and ACF. This single-component anode that we propose benefits from a simplified electrode preparation process. The morphogenetic strategy used for the material production is facile but effective, and can be extended to prepare other metal sulfides with elaborate textural characteristics.

Abstract:The hollow nanotubes constructed with highly conductive 1T MoS2 nanosheets and PPy nanotubes were fabricated. These hollow nanotubes show a huge lithium specific capacity of 755.5 mAh g−1 at 100 mA g−1, and sodium specific capacity of 503.3 mAh g‐1 after 200 cycles. The enhanced electrochemical performance due to the unique 1D and 2D composite structure and excellent conductive property. MoS2 is the most promising anode material for secondary battery with its unique 2D layered structure. However, the application of MoS2 is restricted by the poor electrical conductivity and sluggish ion diffusion. Herein, hollow nanotubes constructed with highly conductive 1T phase MoS2 nanosheets and polypyrrole (PPy) nanotubes are fabricated and used as anode materials for lithium‐ion batteries and sodium‐ion batteries. Remarkably, these hollow nanotubes show a high lithium‐specific capacity of 755.5 mAh g−1 at 100 mA g−1 and excellent sodium‐specific capacity of 503.3 mAh g−1 after 200 cycles. The enhanced electrochemical performance can be attributed to the rational design of unique 1D and 2D composite structure. First, the highly conductive 1T phase MoS2 2D nanosheets and hollow 1D PPy nanotube can effectively promote the charge transfer kinetics. However, the increased interlayer spacing of 1T phase MoS2 rapidly improves the insertion/extraction process of metal ions, and the vertical growth of MoS2 nanosheets on the surface of the PPy nanotubes also exposes more energy storage sites. This work provides a new idea for the preparation of MoS2‐based composite materials, and also proposes a reference for its application in the secondary battery.
