Abstract:The air breakdown in the conductor rod gap was analyzed for alternating or direct switching impulse voltages. The effect of the alternating pre stressing voltage on the impulse spark over voltage depended on where the switching impulse is superimposed on the AC waveform. For positive switching impulse cases, both the DC and AC pre stressing voltages significantly increased the impulse spark over voltage, and the longer time to peak of the impulse voltage was the higher spark over voltage was. With AC pre stressing triggered at angles of 180° and 135°, the impulse spark over voltage greatly increased with increasing time to peak of the impulse voltage and the AC pre stressing voltage. The maximum net increase reached nearly 70 percent. Analysis of the corona along the conductor or rod tip shows that the existing AC or DC voltage changed the negative streamer activities at the rod tip during the impulse, which is the main reason for the different U 50% spark over voltage of the switching impulse.
