Abstract:R134a will be phased out soon due to its high GWP. Replacing R134a with a low Global Warming Potential (GWP) and non- or slightly flammable fluids in the systems in stock should maintain the same level of system performance. This study focuses on the drop-in alternatives for R134a regarding a Mobile Air-Conditioning system. A simulation model coupled with a microchannel heat exchanger model is developed and validated for calculating the system Coefficient of Performance (COP) and capacity of the Mobile Air-Conditioning system. A comprehensive method is developed to evaluate the alternative candidates combining the performance simulation and the flammability estimated of mixtures. The evaluation includes the system performance, environmental impact, and flammability of alternative mixtures. 15 pairs of binary mixtures from six pure fluids (R134a, R1234yf, R1234ze(E), R32, R227ea, and R152a) with 99 compositions are evaluated as R134a drop-in replacements, and the results are discussed. There is no perfect mixture found that is nonflammable, has low GWP, and has higher system efficiency and capacity than R134a in this study. Using R152a as a drop-in replacement of R134a can increase the system efficiency and capacity, but R152a is flammable. By adding R134a or R227ea to R152a can reduce the flammability of the mixture. R152a/R134a, R152a/R1234yf, and R32/R152a have higher COP and capacity than R134a, but they are not safe or environmental friendly enough. The mixtures for replacing R134a as drop-in alternatives with low Global Warming Potential (less than 150 or 700), nonflammable or slightly flammable are listed and discussed. The method developed in this study can be extended to evaluate alternatives for replacing other working fluids in any thermal application that will be restricted.

Abstract:R32 has superior environmental performance,such as ODP is zero,GWP is less than that of R410A,etc.It has been gradually recognized to have potential to substitute R410A.Carries out the experimental study on the cycle performances of R410A and R32.The results show that the pressure ratios are almost the same,the compressor power consumption of R32 are slightly higher than that of R410A,the refrigerating capacity is slightly superior to that of R410A and their COP are very close,but the discharge temperature of R32 is higher than that of R410A under different working conditions.In a word,R32 has good thermophysical properties and friendly environmental performance,which make it as a potential alternative refrigerant to R410A.
Experimental study of ternary mixture R32/R125/R161 as alternative refrigerant to R407C

Abstract:A ternary non-azeotropic mixture of R32/R125/R161 as an alternative refrigerant to R407C was studied. The physical characteristics of R32/R125/R161 are similar to those of R407C. Its ozone depleting potential (ODP) is zero and its global warming potential (GWP) is smaller than that of R407C. Without any modification to the system components, experimental tests were performed on a vapor compression refrigeration set with a rotor compressor, which was originally designed for R407C. Experimental results indicate that power consumption, volumetric refrigerating capacity, refrigerating capacity and coefficient of performance (COP) increased, while pressure ratio and discharge temperature decreased with increasing evaporation temperature at different condensation temperature for R32/R125/R161 and R407C. At the same condensation temperature and evaporation temperature, volumetric refrigerating capacity, refrigerating capacity and COP of R25/R125/R161 were superior to those of R407C, and pressure ratio and power consumption of R25/R125/R161 were lower than those of R407C, and discharge temperature was slightly higher than that of R407C at the same working conditions. In addition, COP and volumetric refrigerating capacity increased with increasing subcooled temperature at the same condensation temperature. Therefore, the new refrigerant R32/R125/R161 can be considered as a promising alternative refrigerant to R407C.

Abstract:The research status on refrigerant substitute for the freeze and cold storage system is reviewed.Based on this,a new ternary non-azeotropic mixture of HFC-161/HFC-125/HFC-143a(15/45/40) as a promising mixed refrigerant to HFC-404A is presented.The ODP of the new refrigerant is zero and its basic thermodynamic properties are similar to those of HFC-404A,and its GWP is much smaller than that of R507A or HFC-404A.The cycle performance between the new mixture refrigerant and HFC-404A is theoretically analyzed and compared.The results show that the cycle performance and environmental performance of the new mixture refrigerant are better than those of HFC-404A.The new mixture refrigerant may be a promising alternative refrigerant for HFC-404A.

Abstract:R161 with excellent cycle performance was employed as the main component and R227ea was introduced as an antiflaming component. A new refrigerant with good cycle performance and safety performance was found to replace the traditional refrigerant R22 by optimizing the composition of R161 and R227ea based on the principle of complementary advantages.A program combined with REFPROP 7.0 was wrote to calculate the thermodynamic property and cycle performance.The cycle performances of R161+R227ea and R407C were conducted on the electric calorimeter apparatus.The theoretical and experimental analysis show that the refrigerating capacity and power consumption of the new refrigerant is lower than R407C,while the coefficient of performance(COP) is equal to R407C and the discharge temperature is about 5 ℃ lower than R407C.The novel mixture refrigerant has the potential to replace R407C and R22.

Abstract:In this study, a modified refrigeration cycle (MRC) using refrigerant mixture R170/R290 was proposed for applications in low-temperature freezers. Different from traditional auto-cascade cycle (ARC), additional recuperator and expansion valve are set between condenser and separator to realize phase separation at an intermediate pressure. The MRC can significantly improve volumetric refrigeration capacity (q(ev)) and the coefficient of performance (COP) especially in low evaporating temperature condition. As evaporating temperature is set at -60 degrees C, using MRC system can acquire 18% and 35% COP and q(ev) improvements, and the compression ratio in MRC reduced 23% in comparison to ARC. In general, decreasing both separating temperature and quality of condenser outlet will benefit the performance of MRC. Besides, there exist an appropriate mixture quality at evaporator outlet to obtain the best COP and q(ev) under the given condition. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd and IIR. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A lot of test methods,test conditions and research results about the compatibility between alternative refrigerant/oil and materials since 1990's are reviewed.The materials include plastics,rubbers,metals,motor materials and desiccant used in refrigerators.By reviewing these research results,it is found that many alternative refrigerants are compatible with the materials in the original refrigerators.However,there are still some materials which are not compatible with some refrigerants in some times.The reference are provided for manufacturers to select materials for new refrigeration equipment using alternative refrigerants,also some suggestions are about for the alternative refrigerants.

Abstract:An experimental apparatus for testing the explosion limits of flammable refrigerants was established following the standard of American Society for Testing Materials(ASTM) E681-01.Factors affecting the explosion limits of refrigerants were analyzed.Experimental results show that the physical characteristics of HFC-161/125/32 are similar to those of HCFC-22,its ozone depleting potential(ODP) is zero,and its global warming potential(GWP) is smaller than that of HCFC-22,therefore the new refrigerant HFC-161/125/32 can be considered as a promising alternative refrigerant to HCFC-22.The explosion limits of the flammable binary refrigerants of HFC-161/125/32 systems were tested.Based on the experimental data,the critical flammability line of the mixtures HFC-161/125/32 was plotted.Analysis result shows the importance of explosion limits to the safety of flammable refrigerants in manufacture and application.

Abstract:This paper investigated the performance of a diffusion absorption refrigerator operating with R23/R32/R134a as the mixed refrigerant, DMF (N, N-dimethylformamide) as the absorbent, helium as the auxiliary inert gas and a solution pump. The experimental results show that the high pressure mixed refrigerant can be further cooled and liquefied in the refrigerant recuperator by the low pressure mixed refrigerant, and diffuse into helium at low refrigerating temperature, then the system can reach much low refrigerating temperature, which is also benefitted from the introduce of the component R32. The feasibility of horizontal serpentine tube-in-tube recuperator in the system has been verified in experiment, but the structure of the recuperator needs to be improved as well as the processing technique and installation accuracy of the recuperator in future.

Abstract:In order to solve the problem existing when using themain refrigerant alternative (R134a) to substitute R12 in a refrigerator,this paper presents a solution of using R134a with R600a as a newrefrigerant R134a/ R600a. This paper obtains a conclusion thatR134a/R600a is prior to R134a and R600a after comparing physicalappearances and thermal parameters between these refrigerants. Basedon the performances comparison, many improvements of the existingrefrigerator compressor have been suggested. The results ofperformance test proves that R134a/ R600a is solvable with mineraloil, so the problem caused by lubricant is settled successfully.

Abstract:R41 was selected to substitute for R23 in an auto-cascade refrigeration cycle with a rectifying column at-60℃.Performance comparisons and analyses were conducted when R1234ze (E)was selected as the less volatile component.An experimental apparatus was designed and established to compare the performances of R23/R1234ze(E)and R41/R1234ze(E)in the system.Both theoretical and experimental results showed that when adopting R1234ze(E)as the less volatile component,COP values decreased slightly and the compression work per unit volume decreased by 1/3—1/2 after the substitution of R41 for R23.Besides,the refrigeration capacity per unit volume also decreased slightly,but the refrigeration capacity per unit mass showed an obvious increase, which would result in significant refrigerant charge reduction.More importantly,the reduction in GWP of R41 would bring obvious environmental protection effect.

Abstract:Centrifugal compressors are commonly used in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. The current generation of refrigerants in HVAC systems have very low ozone depletion potential, but most of them are still considered as containing high global warming potential (GWP) chemicals. Facing the regulatory pressure to eliminate the high-level GWP refrigerants, some of the existing HVAC systems will need to switch to low-GWP refrigerants. In this paper, we studied the performance changes in a refrigerant centrifugal compressor when switching from R134a to R1234ze(E) and R1234yf through a method that combined numerical simulation and an 1D meanline code. By combining these two methods, a reliable compressor performance change prediction was generated using limited results from the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. The results show that the property differences in the working fluid can significantly change the refrigerant compressor performance, including the compressor efficiency, pressure ratio, power consumption, working range and cooling capacity.

Abstract:The R134a /R600a refrigerant is a kind of near-azeotropic mixture when the mass quota of R134a in the mixture is between 75%～95%. The near-azeotropic mixture′s characteristics are introduced. The mixture′s cyclic performance is analyzed theoretically and validated by experiment when it operates as alterative refrigerant of R12. In addition, the oil return characteristics are studied experimentally when the refrigerant uses alkylb-enzene or mineral oil as lubricant in the refrigeration system.
Performance Simulation of R22 Alternative Refrigerants in a Finned-Tube Condenser for Low Temperature and Transport Applications.

Abstract:This paper comparatively evaluates the feasibility of R404A, R507A and propane (R290) as substitute refrigerants for R22 used in most low temperature and transport refrigeration applications. The present investigation has been done for a finned-tube condenser based on a segment-by-segment simulation model, which is validated with experimental results from published literature. The performance simulation and comparison of the finned-tube condenser using the refrigerants are carried out at different inlet air temperature and velocity to mimic the actual space conditions. The results show that R290 has lower pressure drop, lower mass flow rate and higher specific heat transfer than R22. Although R404A and R507A have higher specific heat transfer than R22, both of them have larger pressure drop, and bigger mass flow rate. Overall, R290 offers better performance and reliability than R404A and R507A, and can be used as long term substitute refrigerant for R22 in low temperature and transport applications.

Abstract:In this paper, a new ternary non-azeotropic mixture of HFC-161/125/143a (0.15/0.45/0.40 in mass fraction), as a promising mixed refrigerant to R404A, is presented. The ozone depletion potential (ODP) of the new refrigerant is zero and its basic thermodynamic properties are similar to those of R404A, but its global warming potential (GWP) is much smaller than those of R507A and R404A. Meanwhile, theoretical calculations show that, under the working condition I (the average evaporation temperature: −23 °C, the average condensing temperature: 43 °C, the superheat temperature: 28 °C, the subcooling temperature: 5 °C), the volumetric refrigerating effect and specific refrigerating effect of the new mixture are 2.33% and 15.48% higher, respectively, than those of R404A. The coefficient of performance (COP) of the new mixture is 5.19% higher than that of R404A and the pressure ratio of the new mixture is 0.82% lower than that of R404A. Equally, under the working condition II (the average evaporation temperature: −40 °C, the average condensing temperature: 35 °C, the superheating temperature: 30 °C, the subcooling temperature: 5 °C), the volumetric refrigerating effect and specific refrigerating effect of the new mixture are 2.24% and 20.58% higher, respectively, than those of R404A. The COP of the new mixture is 4.60% higher than that of R404A and the pressure ratio of the new mixture is similar to that of R404A. The performances of the new mixture and R404A are compared in a vapor compressor refrigeration apparatus originally designed for R404A under several working conditions (condensing temperatures: 35–45 °C, evaporation temperatures: −40–−20 °C). Experimental results show that the new mixture can obtain a higher COP, by 6.3% to 12.1%, and a lower pressure ratio, by 1.8% to 6.6%, compared to R404A; although the discharge temperature of the new mixture is slightly higher than that of R404A. The advantages of the new mixture will be further verified in the actual system.
Experimental Study of Split Room Air Conditioner Charged with R290 and R1270 as Substitutes to R22

Abstract:It is urgent to seek more suitable refrigerants as the traditional R22 used widely in air conditioners nowadays is under phase out for its environmental problems and hydrofluorocarbons(HFCs) would aggravate global warming effects,while hydrocarbons(HCs) have drawn public attention.In this paper,R290 and R1270 were adopted as refrigerants in a R22 original split room air conditioner to carry out performance experiments using air-enthalpy test method.The results indicate that under normal condition,adopting R290 as a drop-in substitute to R22 would offer 5.0% lower cooling capacity and 10.3% higher energy efficiency ratio(EER),and the use of the 20% larger displacement compressor could help increase cooling capacity by 8.9%,but reduce EER by 8.3%,however,the performance is better than that of the original R22 system.And the performance of the R1270 system is better than that of the R290 system under normal condition.The results also show that,with respect to the original R22 system,HC systems have higher increase rate and greater increment in both cooling capacity and(EER) with the decrease of outdoor temperature and they have better performance when outdoor temperature is relatively low.The results demonstrate that HCs are promising substitutes to R22 and deserve wide application prospects in air conditioners.
Theoretical and Experimental Research on the Performance of Twin Screw Compressor Using R513A As R134a Replacement

Abstract:The refrigerant R513A receives significant attention as an alternative to R134a used in water chiller, due to its lower global warming potential. However, whether R513A can directly and efficiently take the place of R134a in the twin screw compressor has not been verified. In this paper, a thermodynamic model is applied to compare the performance of R513A and R134a in a twin screw compressor. The leakage process and heat transfer between refrigerant and lubricant oil are taken into account. With this model, the volumetric efficiency and adiabatic efficiency are simulated and p- V indicator diagram is presented. Simulated results show that R513A is the refrigerant with low temperature lift, low pressure ratio but high pressure difference. Experimentally, the test compressor originally designed for R134a is used to compare the performance of R134a and R513A. Test results show that the differences of volumetric efficiency and adiabatic efficiency between R134a and R513A are very small and acceptable. The COP of R513A is only a little bit lower than that of R134a. Hence, taking the cost of replacing equipment and GWP into account, R513A can directly take the place of R134a in the twin screw compressor.

Abstract:In this paper,a small experimental refrigerator was designed and fabricated.And study on the flow behavior in the adiabatic capillary tube was made using this experimental refrigerator. The design of the refrigerator,the structures of parts and production process were introduced in detail.The flow parameters of R134a,R407C and R410A,alternatives to R22,were measured by this experimental device.Experimental results are in a good agreement with the proven results calculated from the mathematical model of adiabatic capillary tube.
