Abstract:In this paper, a three dimensional analysis is performed to investigate the static instability of long-span cable-stayed bridges due to wind loading. Cables made of carbon fiber composite cable (CFCC) are studied. Nonlinearity due to displacement-dependent wind loading is considered. A 1400meter cable-stayed bridge model is used to investigate the static behavior of bridges with both steel and CCFC cable. The static instability of the bridges, both after completion as well as under construction, is considered. This study concludes that the static stability of CFCC long-span cable-stayed bridges simulates that of steel cable-stayed bridges. It is also shown that the instability phenomenon occurs when the wind attack angle acting on the girder exceeds 5 degrees.

Abstract:Single-sided cable-stayed curved-bridge is a type of bridge that is highly expressive for architectural shape.Curved-bridges often constitute cable-stayed bridges with cables.In addition,in order to reduce the mast height and construct more easily,partially cable-stayed bridges can be adopted for large span pedestrian bridges.More proportion of the stiffness is provided by the box girder of the bridge.The box girder and the stay cables work together to form a spatial structural system.The coupling effect of bending-shear-torsion is more complicated.In this paper,related design research was carried out based on a large span partially cable-stayed pedestrian curved-bridge in a city greenway project.The number of the masts and the structural system of the main bridge were optimized.The design of vibration reduction was conducted.This work can provide reference for the relevant engineering practice and research.
Dynamic characteristics and seismic response analysis of cable-stayed bridges taking into account cable lateral vibration

Abstract:In this paper the effect of cable lateral vibration in the Northern Channel Bridge of the Hangzhou Bay Bridge (main span 448m) is analyzed based on the substructure and static condensation method. The analysis mainly focuses on two aspects:dynamic characteristics and the seismic response. Numerical results show that many cable-deck coupled modal shapes appear, participation factors and modal damping of some modes decrease, and the seismic response increases remarkably when cable lateral vibration is considered. It is concluded that cable lateral vibration must be included in the analysis of dynamic characteristics and seismic responses of cable-stayed bridges.

Abstract:In this paper,a three-dimensional finite element model for single pylon and double cable plane cable-stayed bridge is created to analyze the dynamic performance of Linjiangmen Cable-Stayed Bridge in Jilin.The numerical calculation results with the model are agreed fairly well with those of dynamic tests,which manifest that the model can be well used for analysis of the dynamic behavior of the single pylon and double cable plane cable-stayed bridge and can serve as reference to the analysis of dynamic behavior of similar bridges.

Abstract:The paper presented several types of finite-element model based on a typical long-span prestressed concrete cable-stayed bridge,established its precise and validated three-dimensional finite element model, and analyzed its dynamic properties. The conclusion indicates that the typical cable-stayed bridge has a lower natural frequency and dense modal, exists many coupled vibration.
Dynamic Responses of Cable-Stayed Bridges to Vehicular Loading Including the Effects of the Local Vibration of Cables

Abstract:Stay cables, the primary load carrying components of cable-stayed bridges (CSBs), are characterised by high flexibility which increases with the span of the bridge. This makes stay cables vulnerable to local vibrations which may have significant effects on the dynamic responses of long-span CSBs. Hence, it is essential to account for these effects in the assessment of the dynamics CSBs. In this paper, the dynamic responses of CSBs under vehicular loads are studied using the finite element method (FEM), while the local vibration of stay cables is analyzed using the substructure method. A case study of a cable-stayed steel bridge with a center span of 448 m demonstrates that stay cables undergo large displacements in the primary mode of the whole bridge although, in general, a cable’s local vibrations are not obvious. The road surface roughness has significant effects on the interaction force between the deck and vehicle but little effect on the global response of the bridge. Load impact factors of the main girder and tower are small, and the impact factors of the tension of cables are larger than those of the displacements of girders and towers.

Abstract:The nonlinear finite element method is adopted to analyze the possibility of coupling vibrations of cables and the bridge of long span cable-stayed bridges due to vehicles. A cable-stayed bridge with span of 1400 m is studied as a case. Results show that the dynamic responses of cable supports due to vehicles are obtained through vehicle-bridge coupling vibration analyses, and are taken as stimulations in nonlinear vibration calculation of steel and CFRP cables. Results show that the displacement amplitudes of both steel and CFRP cables are not big; the local vibration of a long-span steel cable due to the action of vehicle is observed because its frequency is close to the main frequencies of the bridge; but the CFRP cables vibrate with the bridge because its stiffness is greater. Besides, the influence of lasting time on the amplitude of cables is not obvious. The predominant frequencies of the dynamic responses of the bridge have no obvious relation with that of cables in the primary frequency range of cables. The large amplitude cable-bridge coupling vibration due to vehicular loads is not possible to occur.

Abstract:The difference of dynamic characteristics and seismic responses between cable-stayed bridges with steel and carbon fiber composite (CFRP) cables was studied and the essential reason was investigated, taking the northern channel bridge of Hangzhou bay as an object. The steel cables were replaced with CFRP cables using strength equivalent principle and the program for seismic response calculation considering cable lateral vibrations was employed. The results show that coupling vibration between bridge and cables is the essential reason inducing the difference of dynamic characteristics and seismic responses between the bridges with two kinds of cables. The frequencies for free vibration of CFRP cables are higher, so the possibility of cable-bridge coupling vibration is smaller than that of steel cables. The seismic responses of cable-stayed bridges with CFRP cables are lower than that of steel cables under the same seismic loadings.

Abstract:Cihai Bridge is a new structural system consisted of cable-stayed bridge and giant wheel.The general situation of Cihai Bridge is introduced.Three kinds of geometric nonlinearity lied in cable-stayed bridge are analyzed,which included the sag of cable,large displacement and the effect of beam-column.A FEM model of the composite structure is built and methods dealing with each nonlinearity factor are put forward.Model analysis of giant wheel,new cable-stayed bridge,the whole structure are carriedout individually.The mode shape and selffrequency are attained.The analysis is done on the feature of the dynamic performance.It is pointed out that the whole structure has a stepped condense spectrum and complex mode.In low-order frequency,the vibration of giant wheel covers a large part, while that of the cable-stayed bridges covers a small part and most of its vibration are coupled with that of the wheel.

Abstract:A gneral mechanical analysis is hard to reflect the actual working status and carrying capacity for the anchorage zone of cable-stayed bridge. The main span structure of Wenhui-Road elevated bridge is a three span (104+ 240+ 104) m cable-stayed bridge with two pylons and two cable planes,based on the conformation and characteristic of strand layout in cable pylon of this bridge, the test project of the full scale model of segment of cable pylon is described, the spatial analysis of segment model is carried through, the values obtained by spatial analysis and test results are compared, some important conclusions are drawn, it is beneficial to theconstrucation of Wenhui Road bridge.
Dynamic Characteristic Research of Cable-Stayed Bridges Considering Cable Local Vibration: Dynamic Behavior Analysis of Northern Channel Bridge in Hangzhou Bay

Abstract:The dynamic characteristic analysis was carried out on the northern channel bridge in Hangzhou Bay of 448 m span scheme with cable local vibration taken into consideration. The cable local vibration was included by treating cable modes as generalized freedom and using the concept of substructure. The results show that many cable-deck and cable-tower couple modes appear when cable local vibration is considered, which can not be predicted by one-element cable method. Compared with multi-link method that divides the cable into several elements, this method has less freedom and almost the same precision. The dynamic characteristics of the bridge structure cannot be described correctly if cable local vibration is not involved. Cable local vibration has little effect on the modal frequency, but more on the modal energy distribution. The cable damping will be overestimated while cable energy underestimated in those modes prone to cable local vibration if it is not considered.

Abstract:In the analysis of the live load nonlinearity and ultimate bearing capacity of a cable-stayed bridge, the planned construction state or the completed state of the bridge must be first obtained by adjusting the cable forces; then, further analysis for the next load step can be done by adding loads to the structure of this kind state. To achieve this aim, the paper re-develops an ANSYS-based finite element program, which takes the large displacement effect, p-Δ effect and cable sag effect into account, by using APDL in ANSYS software and the virtual temperature load method for cable force adjustment. A cable-stayed bridge test model is computationally analyzed for its cable force adjustment and the follow-up nonlinearity under live loads. The analysis results are in good accord with the experimental ones, which verifies that the program is reasonable and practicable for the calculation of adjusting cable forces and the nonlinear analysis of post-adjusting cable-stayed bridge can be done in the very same model.

Abstract:Support stiffness is one of important factors on structure dynamics. Considering the vertical support stiffness, a multi-cable-stayed shallow-arch model of the cable-stayed bridge is established. Its differential equation governing the planar motion of cables and the shallow arch and the boundary conditions are derived by Hamilton’s principle. Firstly, the in-plane free vibration of the system is explored in order to find the modal functions and the possible internal resonances of nonlinear dynamics. Then, the 1:2:2 internal resonance among the different modes of the shallow arch and two cables are investigated by the multiple time scale method and pseudo-arclength algorithm. Meanwhile, the frequency-/force–response curves are used to explore the nonlinear behaviors of the system, especially the influence of vertical support stiffness, excitation frequency and amplitude on the internal resonance of the system is considered. To a certain extent, the support stiffness can reduce the response amplitudes of members by absorbing some energy from excitation.

Abstract:In order to evaluate single tower composite girder Cable Bridge actual bearing capacity and working property on design using load, a single-tower composite girder cable-stayed bridge is taken as an example, by means of static load test, dynamic load test, reasonably measures evaluates the single tower composite girder cable-stayed bridge's bearing capacity. The static load test measure static properties of bridge structure (static strain, static deflection, etc.), dynamic load test, measure the dynamic properties of bridge structure (vibration frequency, damping, forced vibration amplitude, impact coefficient, etc.). Results show that the rigidity strength integrity and dynamic characteristics of bridge structure are favorable; the structure’s bearing capacity is favorable.

Abstract:To study the dynamic behavior of cable-stayed bridges, a linear multi-cable-stayed beam model is developed to investigate its in-plane and out-of-plane transverse vibrations. From the full-bridge perspective, an in-plane nonlinear single-mode discrete model is established. First, the in-plane and out-of-plane motion equations of the system and their boundary conditions are derived. Second, by employing the separation of variables method, the linear eigenvalue problems are solved. The influences of the mass ratio, stiffness ratio, and cable sag on the occurrence of global, local, and coupled vibration modes are studied. Third, frequency response, amplitude response, phase diagram, time history, and power spectrum are extracted to investigate the system's nonlinear dynamic behaviors. The obtained results demonstrate that for the in-plane motion, the occurrence of global and local modes of the system depends on the mass and stiffness ratios between cable and beam significantly; for the out-of-plane motion, without the elastic support of the cable, the global modes occur, which can be suppressed by adjusting the mass and stiffness ratios between cable and beam but may in turn induce the cable's local vibration modes; for the nonlinear analysis, the single-degree-of-freedom system behaves like a hardening spring. Its lower branch behaves more complicated than the higher one and has a double-periodic steady-state solution. The system with large damping ratio behaves shows weak hardening spring property.

Abstract:The anchorage zone of a cable stayed bridge tower is the key part of cable stayed bridge, in which stress distribution is rather complicated. A general plane analysis method does not reflect actual stress status. In this paper, the main project and method of experimental study of the full scale segmental model of cable stayed bridge tower of the 2nd Yangtze River Bridge in Nanjing are described. The small radius and large tonnage ring U-shape prestressed system is firstly used in the box tower. The test results and FEM spatial analysis values of the full scale segmental model of tower in the stage of prestressing force and the period before concrete cracking are given. They are in a good agreement. Cracking load and ultimate load of the full scale segmental model of the tower are also given. Some suggestions on design of the bridge tower are proposed.

Abstract:Taking a self-anchored suspension bridge,Beiguan Bridge in Jiangshan,as an example,the self-anchored suspension bridge model is established using the finite element software.The behaviour of Beiguan Bridge is analyzed by considering the impact of these factors including dead load action,initial forces of the main cable and its non-linear geometry on the bridge's static characteristics.The filed static load test is completed to verify the theoretical analysis.The results show that there is a good agreement between analysis values and test values from severalaspects such as stiffening girder,main cable deflection,cable bent tower horizontal displacement,cable bent tower strain and suspender stress.Well,the stiffness and strength of Beiguan Bridge meet the requirements specified by the design code.

Abstract:Long-span cable-stayed bridges exhibit highly geometrically nonlinear behavior. The accuracy of their static analysis plays an important role during the design and construction processes. A finite element computation procedure was presented which includes the cable sag effect, the beam-column effect and the large displacement effect by modifying the elastic modulus of the cable and by introducing a geometric stiffness matrix and a large displacement matrix. The bending strain energy was chosen as the objective function to calculate the initial cable forces. An iterative-incremental procedure is described to solve the nonlinear system of equations. The method was used to analyze the Dafusi bridge, in Chongqing. The results provide a basis for the construction control.

Abstract:The dynamic characteristics are closely linked to the seismic stability and wind-resistant of the bridge. But different bridge types have different dynamic characteristics. In order to study the dynamic characteristics of a double-pylon cable-stayed bridge with a single-cable plane and steel truss girder whose main span is the longest in the world, the dynamic load test was done, and the finite element and the subspace iteration methods were used to analyze the vibration mode of the bridge. The influence of different structural parameters on the dynamic characteristics of the bridge was analyzed. The changed structural parameters are cable layout, stiffness of steel truss girder, stiffness of stayed cables, stiffness of pylons, the concentration of dead load, number and location of auxiliary piers, and structural system. The results show that the bending and torsion resistance of the double-pylon cable-stayed bridge with a single-cable plane and steel truss girder is weak. The torsional stiffness of the cable-stayed bridge with a double-cable plane is stronger than that of the cable-stayed bridge with a single-cable plane. The seismic stability and wind-resistant of the bridge can be improved by using light dead load, improving the stiffness of pylon and girder, and adding auxiliary piers scientifically. However, the change of cable stiffness has a complex influence on the dynamic characteristics of the bridge. The conclusion can offer references for the construction, maintenance, and design of the same type of bridges.

Abstract:By using the approximate analysis method of cable-stayed bridge, the cable-stayed bridge of floating system is simplified into three models: a beam supported by discrete springs, a beam on an continuous elastic foundation, and a beam on an elastic continuous foundation with variable foundation coefficients. The dynamic equation of the cable-stayed bridge structure under moving load is established and solved by the forth-order Runge-Kutta method. The natural frequencies and dynamic responses of the three models are compared one another. The results show that when the equivalent elastic coefficient of the cable is small, both the difference of natural frequency and the difference of deflection of the three models are small;and when it is large, the differences are also large. The effects of velocity, stiffness and damping of the moving load on the dynamic responses of the bridge are analyzed. The results show that, the spectrum of the dynamic responses of the bridge consists of natural frequency of the bridge and the self-vibration frequency of the moving load. When the stiffness of the moving load is large or the damping is small, the responses of the bridge are great.
