Abstract:The wide concern on absolute calibration of microphones at high pressure levels prompts the development of the pistonphone technique. However, as the sound pressure level goes higher, the linear hypothesis, which is applicable for the small amplitude sound wave, will no longer be valid. The nonlinear characteristics of the finite amplitude sound wave will produce high order harmonic components and also some other complex frequency components, which eventually result in the distortion of the sound pressure in the pistonphone, and should be quantitatively calculated to assess the accuracy of absolute sound pressure calibration of microphones at high sound pressure levels using pistonphones. In this paper, the linearized wave equations were built based on the perturbation method and the Euler system. Then, the distributed parameter expressions for the finite amplitude sound pressure both neglecting and considering the intermodulation characteristic have been explicitly derived. Nonlinear distortion characteristics of the sound pressure in the pistonphone have been studied, and the effects of the intermodulation on the sound pressure distortion have been evaluated. Computations reveal that the nonlinear distortion characteristics of the sound pressure produced by pistonphones should be quantitatively considered when the sound pressure level reaches 148[Formula: see text]dB, and the intermodulation characteristic can be neglected when the sound pressure level is lower than 174[Formula: see text]dB.

Abstract:Hydrophone is a receiver transducer used to receive acoustic signals and convert them into electrical signals, and has been widely applied in the fields of ocean observation and biomedical. Calibrating hydrophones is essential to ensure that they can provide accurate and reliable measurements. International Electrotechnical Commission provides a series of methods and experimental procedures for hydrophone calibrations, and some studies also have proposed many hydrophones calibration schemes. The purpose of this paper is to summarize and generalize these methods to provide a referable review of the development history, current status, and directions in hydrophone calibration researches. Specifically, this paper focuses on discussing the differences between ocean observation hydrophones and biomedical ultrasound transducers to obtain their requirements for sensitivity and directivity calibrations, further analyzes the consistency and differences of calibration methods used for the two types of hydrophones, and discusses the conflicts between the ideal and experimental conditions of the calibration methods to derive the challenges faced by the existing calibration methods.

Abstract:By using independently developed sound vibration generating device,the measurement technology of dynamics characteristics of typical tubes for pressure measurements was developed,and the frequency response characteristics of typical tubes for fluctuating wind pressure measurements were measured.By using principle of sound vibrations,a multi-function sound vibration generating device was developed.Different pipes were excited by sine pressure waves,multi-point scanning technology was used to improve the sampling frequency for getting full curves of sine waves.Experimental results show that the experimental technique developed can be used to obtain high-frequency dynamic pressure signals and accurate frequency response curve for providing a basis for the error correction.

Abstract:The demand for infrasound monitoring has increased to effectively gather information regarding its source phenomena, such as volcanic explosions, tsunamis, and nuclear explosions. To capture infrasound signals, an array of infrasound sensors, including microphones and micro-barometers, has been deployed internationally and locally. Nevertheless, achieving a precise analysis remains challenging because of inconsistencies among different sensor outputs. To ensure the reliability of the measurements, the calibration of sensors below a few Hz, where traceable calibration has not been verified, is required. This paper presents a specialized calibration system designed for infrasonic frequencies. Inspired by a liquid-column manometer, this system uniquely uses the low-frequency vibration of the liquid-column to generate sound pressure, offering three distinct advantages. First, dissimilar to the existing calibration methods, this method eliminates sound pressure leakage by sealing an open end of a closed cylinder with liquid. In addition, the influence of heat conduction is mitigated by direct measurement of the liquid level fluctuation. Finally, the generated sound pressure can be simply calculated if the water level difference in and outside the cylinder is known. Two types of microphones, Brüel & Kjær (BK) Types 4160 and 4193, were calibrated within a frequency range of 0.01 Hz–2 Hz. The results demonstrated that the pressure sensitivity of BK Type 4160 calibrated by this method agreed with the sensitivity calibrated by the laser pistonphone method within 0.1 dB at 0.5 Hz. Furthermore, at lower frequencies, the frequency response calibrated using the proposed method was consistent with the response evaluated by comparison with a barometer. Similar results were obtained for the free-field sensitivity of BK Type 4193. The study findings confirmed the ability of the proposed system to calibrate different types of microphones.

Abstract:Aerodynamic noise is usually broadband noise. The designed array needs to satisfy the measurement require?ments of both high and low frequency signals. The corresponding array form is designed when the frequency range of array mea?surement is determined. The noise source localization technology based on microphone array is the core test technique in the wind tunnel aerodynamic noise test technology. The accuracy of noise source localization depends mainly on the microphone ar?ray calibration technique. After the microphone phase array is installed,different frequency response and sensitivity,preamplifier, cable laying,power supply,frequency response of signal conditioner and the installation of microphone array can cause the phase difference and amplitude difference among all measurement channels in the data acquisition system. Correction of phase difference and amplitude difference of microphones can make all the microphone frequency responses consistent and ensure the accuracy of test result.

Abstract:Rich information of unsteady vortical structures immersed in wall turbulence is discernible in the weak signals of wall pressure fluctuations.Microphone array was thoroughly introduced for simultaneously measuring wall pressure fluctuations field.Toward this end,an in-house calibration tunnel was carefully made to obtain the amplitude-phase transfer function of each transducer.Turbulent separated and reattaching flow over a backward-facing step was employed as the benchmark-testing configuration,in which below the downstream wall 16 microphone transducers were placed in the streamwise direction.The reconstructed time-series data demonstrated that the microphone array rapidly captured the intermittent vortical structures,predicting the unsteady characteristics of the turbulent flow.

Abstract:Recently, in the field of environmental noise control and monitoring, a diffusion of a new generation of microphone sensors has been observed. This was met by the rapid development of MEMS (MicroElectroMechanical Systems) microphones, whose technology could open up the possibility of noise measurements based on extensive acoustic sensor networks, that use a large number of microphones spread across wide areas. Nevertheless, current standards do not provide proper calibration and test procedures for these microphones. In this work, calibration standard procedures was adapted for the complete characterization of digital MEMS microphones by comparison with laboratory standard microphones in pressure field condition. Large data-set obtained from comparison, is subjected to a statistical analysis in order to highlight any possible factor affecting calibration accuracy and robustness.

Abstract:Gem anvil cell is on important tool in high pressure experimental research, and the key of its application is the accurate calibration of the pressure in sample chamber. To date, the pressure has been routinely calibrated by the extra gauge such as ruby. This may increase the difficulty in building a setup and changing the chemical environment, even chemical reaction happens with the sample, thereby degrading the experimental results. In this study, using the synthesized pale sapphire and the heatable Zha-Bassett type cell, the relationships between Raman shift of sapphire-anvil interface and the pressure, and also temperature in chamber are investigated by the confocal Raman microscope at 0-6.3 GPa and 300-573 K, which is used to establish a non-gauge sapphire anvil cell system. The result shows that the pressure induced Raman shift of sapphire anvil at room temperature is 1.6443 cm-1/GPa and the temperature induced shift at room pressure is -0.0198 cm-1/K. We fit the experimental data at simultaneous high temperature and high pressure (HTHP) and find that: ∂ν12/∂T=-0.01913-0.00105×P, ∂ν12/∂P=1.9158-0.00105×T. The effect between the pressure and temperature can be described by ∂ν12/∂P∂T=-0.00105. After this calibration: P=(Δλ-0.01913×ΔT)/(1.9158-0.00105×ΔT), the pressure in the sample chamber can be calculated by the Raman shift of the interface of anvil cell in the HTHP experiment, which can be directly used in hydro-thermal reaction system and has great importance in physics, material science and geoscience.

Abstract:Pressure leakage correction is an important part of the sound pressure measurement using pistonphones, especially at infrasonic frequencies. The existing literature on the calculation of the pressure leakage correction is ambiguous on the time constant T involved in the formulation. On one hand, it states that T=RC, which means the adiabatic time constant Ta. On the other hand, it states that the value of T is measured from the pressure step response of the pistonphone, which could be more specifically a polytropic process. Using the measured (polytropic) time constant Tm as Ta could lead to an error for pressure leakage correction. In this paper, explicit solutions to both the adiabatic and polytropic pressure step responses of a pistonphone are derived. These solutions indicate that Ta is different from Tm. Experimental validations confirm that the measured pressure response agrees well with the explicit solution of polytropic pressure step response. Substituting the optimized parameters into the formulations derived, accurate adiabatic time constant Ta may be obtained and precise sound pressure readings be acquired. The method could improve the precision of calibrating measurement microphones at infrasonic frequencies using pistonphones.
A Fast and Accurate Calibration Method for High Sensitivity Pressure Transducers

Abstract:A novel calibration scheme for fast accurate calibration of high sensitivity pressure transducers is proposed and verified by experiments. Based on theoretical analysis, the accuracy of the calibration for non-linearity, hysteresis and repeatability can be much higher than 1 x 10(-4) for pressure transducers with an operation range of 1 kPa or below. For accurate calibration of sensitivity, a single conventional measurement is needed at the full range pressure.A conventional compensation pressure gauge can be used for the new calibration method. The calibration is very accurate and very fast; only a few seconds for a test point (or 10-20 min for a device). As the operation pressure is self-generating, no expensive pressure source is needed. The performances can be further improved if the design of the apparatus is optimized for the new calibration method according to the theoretical analysis. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Acoustic Properties of Pistonphones at Low Frequencies in the Presence of Pressure Leakage and Heat Conduction

Abstract:The wide concern on absolute pressure calibration of acoustic transducers at low frequencies prompts the development of the pistonphone method. At low frequencies, the acoustic properties of pistonphones are governed by the pressure leakage and the heat conduction effects. However, the traditional theory for these two effects applies a linear superposition of two independent correction models, which differs somewhat from their coupled effect at low frequencies. In this paper, acoustic properties of pistonphones at low frequencies in full consideration of the pressure leakage and heat conduction effects have been quantitatively studied, and the explicit expression for the generated sound pressure has been derived. With more practical significance, a coupled correction expression for these two effects of pistonphones has been derived. In allusion to two typical pistonphones, the NPL pistonphone and our developed infrasonic pistonphone, comparisons were done for the coupled correction expression and the traditional one, whose results reveal that the traditional one produces maximum insufficient errors of about 0.1dB above the lower limiting frequencies of two pistonphones, while at lower frequencies, excessive correction errors with an explicit limit of about 3dB are produced by the traditional expression. The coupled correction expression should be adopted in the absolute pressure calibration of acoustic transducers at low frequencies. Furthermore, it is found that the heat conduction effect takes a limiting deviation of about 3dB for the pressure amplitude and a small phase difference as frequency decreases, while the pressure leakage effect remarkably drives the pressure amplitude to attenuate and the phase difference tends to be 90° as the frequency decreases. The pressure leakage effect plays a more important role on the low frequency property of pistonphones.

Abstract:To eliminate the interferences coming from the boundaries of a water tank and extend its low frequency calibration limit, a frequency domain filter processing (FDFP) method is proposed for hydrophone calibration measurements. The frequency domain filter function is designed according to the a priori spatial position of projector and hydrophone pair in a water tank. A simultaneous comparison method is used for calibration, and a wideband pink noise pulse signal is transmitted. After application of the FDFP method, the transfer impedances of projector and hydrophone pairs in a quasi-free-field are obtained, and interferences reflected from the boundaries of the water tank are effectively eliminated. To verify the FDFP method, an experimental system is established for calibration of the free-field sensitivity of a TC 4033 hydrophone. For a non-anechoic water tank of 1.5 m × 0.88 m × 0.90 m, the lowest calibration frequency is extended from 20 kHz to 3.15 kHz, and the calibration result is consistent with the free-field reciprocity calibration result obtained in an anechoic water tank of 50 m × 15 m × 10 m in the frequency range 3.15 kHz to 31.5 kHz.
Absolute Micro Pressure Measurements Based on a High-Overload-resistance Sensor

Abstract:Presented is a piezoresistive absolute micro pressure sensor, which is of great benefit for altitude location. In this investigation, the design, fabrication and testing of the sensor are carried out. By analysing the stress distribution on sensitive elements using the finite-element method (FEM), a novel structure through the introduction of beams into the standard bossed diaphragm is built up. The proposed configuration presents its advantages in terms of sensitivity and overload resistance compared with the standard bossed diaphragm and conventional plane diaphragm structures. The sensor is fabricated based on silicon bulk micromachining technology, and the detailed processing program is discussed. Calibration data obtained through measurements are in good agreement with the results of the FEM analysis. Testing results demonstrate that the sensor features a high sensitivity of 11.098 mu V/V/Pa in the operating range of 500 Pa at room temperature, and a high-overload resistance (200 times overload) to protect it from being destroyed under atmospheric environment. Owing to the excellent performance, the sensor can be applied for measuring absolute micro pressure lower than 500 Pa.
High frequency calibration of MEMS microphones using spherical N-waves

Abstract:In the context of the scientific program SIMMIC supported by the French National Agency for Research (SIMI 9, ANR 2010 BLANC 0905 03), new wide band MEMS piezoresistive microphones have been designed and fabricated for weak shock wave measurements. The fabricated microphones have a high frequency resonance between 300 to 800 kHz depending on the membrane size. In order to characterize the frequency response of the fabricated sensors up to 1 MHz, new calibration methods based on an N-wave source were designed and tested. Short duration spherical N-waves can be generated by an electric spark source. To estimated a constant sensitivity coefficient, a known method is based on the estimation of the peak pressure from the lengthening of N-waves induced by non linear propagation. However, to obtain the sensitivity as a function of frequency, the output voltage must be compared to the incident pressure waveform, which must be accurately characterized. Taking advantage of recent works on the characterization of pressure N-waves generated by an electric spark source by means of optical methods, two calibration methods have been designed to obtain the frequency response. A method based on the comparison with pressure waveforms deduced from the analysis of schlieren images allowed to estimate the frequency response. A second method, based on a Mach-Zender optical interferometer, was found to be the best method to estimate the sensitivity of microphones up to 1 MHz. The methods were first tested by calibrating standard 1/8 inch condenser microphones. Then, frequency responses of different MEMS microphones prototypes were characterized to test different sensor designs. Results show that using a spark source and optical methods it is possible to calibrate sensors in the frequency range 10 kHz-1 MHz. The new calibration methods were used to improve the design of new high frequency MEMS pressure sensors.

Abstract:With an equipment using Hopkinson pressure bar technique,and using a quartz gage pressure sensors,the high shock acceleration sensors were calibrated,and the calculating formula of the accelerometer sensitivity was developed.The experimental results show that the equipment designed to calibrate high shock acceleration sensors using a quartz gage pressure sensors can meet the calibration precision prescribed completely,and the whole calibration system has the advantage of simple structure,ease in library construction.

Abstract:A new nondestructive pressure-measurement method that can avoid potential safety problems caused by applying traditional pressure-measurement methods in vessels is presented. This method utilizes ultrasonic Rayleigh waves and critically refracted longitudinal waves ( L CR waves). The change in pressure induces a change in the stresses in the vessel's wall. According to the acoustoelastic principle, variations in stress affect the wave velocity. Meanwhile, the velocity of ultrasonic waves can also be affected by the change in temperature. Considering the effect of the pressure and temperature of the vessel on both the wave velocity and propagation distance of the ultrasonic waves, the relationship between ultrasonic transit time delay and both the pressure and temperature change is established. Furthermore, a modified model of pressure measurement is deduced. With this model, a reference method for temperature compensation, without temperature measurement, is presented. The reference method utilizes Rayleigh waves and L CR waves. These two kinds of ultrasonic waves travel along the axial direction of the vessel's wall, bearing the same changes in pressure and temperature. The relationship between the reference transit time delay between two ultrasonic transducers and the pressure is established through theoretical analysis and calibration tests on an air vessel. To reduce the error caused by the unevenness of temperature distribution, which might occur in the vessel's and the transducer's material, a new kind of transducer is used in the experiment, which has two piezoelectric elements and can be used for the Rayleigh and L CR waves. A pair of such transducers is mounted along the axial direction of the air vessel. The penetration area of the Rayleigh wave is almost the same as that of the L CR wave with the use of the new transducers. Comparison tests between the new transducers and the custom-used transducers show that the new transducers have better repeatability. Finally, using the air vessel as a specimen, experimental results show that the reference method is effective and that the pressure values calculated using the reference method are close to the manometer-measured values.
Developing and Calibrating of the High Precision Pressure Sensor Applied in Extreme Environment

Abstract:A kind of pressure sensor applied to high-temperature, high-pressure and corrosive environment was designed to meet the demand of research on extreme environment. Titanium is the appropriate material to develop such sensor for its high-temperature and high-pressure resistance, corrosion resistance, and high yield-strength. A new pressure sensor applied to extreme environment was developed. Combined structure and disk-shape diaphragm sticking techniques as well as novel bridging form of strain gauge were adopted in the design of the new titanium pressure sensor, and multiple linear interpolation algorithm was developed to improve the detection precision. The results of experiment illustrated that the titanium pressure sensor could work well in acidic or alkalic solution, even in 60 MPa, 400deg;C environment, and the precision was improved to ±0. 2%FS after calibration. The new sensor could meet the command of high precision pressure detecting in extreme environment.

Abstract:Measuring surface pressures in a low-speed wind tunnel which are well-resolved in both space and time can be particularly challenging. A technique has therefore been developed for the simultaneous dynamic calibration of large numbers of pressure tappings on a wind tunnel model. A portable, variable-volume plenum is used to calibrate the model extit{in situ}. A forcing function consisting of sequential sinusoids at varying frequencies is used to obtain the spectral responses, with feedback control implemented to ensure consistent amplitudes independent of the plenum's own dynamics. This discrete calibration technique is shown to significantly reduce uncertainty propagation compared to white noise, chirp or step functions. The effectiveness of the dynamic calibration is validated against laser diagnostics in turbulent flow. As a demonstration of the capability of this technique, spatially-resolved surface pressure statistics are then presented for the five wetted faces of a cube in an atmospheric wind tunnel turbulent boundary layer.

Abstract:The influences of static pressure on the output precision of silicon differential pressure transmitter are analyzed the structure of the designed. A new testing system with relatively high precision dual-channel pressure calibrator can be applied static pressure and differential pressure for testing. The outputs of the static pressure influence on silicon differential pressure transmitter are studied by using a new testing system. The output results show that if both of the static pressure and differential pressure are increased, the output voltage errors are increased, if only the static pressure or differential pressure are increased, the output voltage errors are also increased at the different static pressure and differential pressure level. Finally, the output experimental data of the silicon differential pressure transmitter is processed by using appropriate mathematical methods to achieve the purpose of static pressure compensation.

Abstract:This paper starts with an overview of the main principles used for pressure measurements, focusing on their usage in industrial applications' domains. Then, the importance of calibration procedures, namely, static and dynamic calibration of pressure sensors, is analyzed. Regarding calibration, it is important to note that there are several applications where the pressure signals to be measured can have large variations in short periods of time. In industrial applications, particularly in continuous production processes, generally, dynamic pressure measurements are less common; however, they are still required in several cases, such as control loops that are very sensitive to pressure variations, even if the frequencies of those variations are in the range of a few tens of hertz, or even lower. The last part of the paper presents the hardware and software of a flexible and low-cost static and dynamic pressure calibrator that also presents the capability to generate arbitrary waveform pressure signals for calibration and testing purposes. The proposed calibrator also includes the following advantages: remote pressure sensing capabilities that can be used to minimize calibration errors, such as those associated with capillary effects and pressure leakages; portability; and low cost. The paper ends with some experimental results obtained with the proposed calibrator.
