Abstract:We prove that the 2-primary $\pi_{61}$ is zero. As a consequence, the Kervaire invariant element $\theta_5$ is contained in the strictly defined 4-fold Toda bracket $\langle 2, \theta_4, \theta_4, 2\rangle$. Our result has a geometric corollary: the 61-sphere has a unique smooth structure and it is the last odd dimensional case - the only ones are $S^1, S^3, S^5$ and $S^{61}$. Our proof is a computation of homotopy groups of spheres. A major part of this paper is to prove an Adams differential $d_3(D_3) = B_3$. We prove this differential by introducing a new technique based on the algebraic and geometric Kahn-Priddy theorems. The success of this technique suggests a theoretical way to prove Adams differentials in the sphere spectrum inductively by use of differentials in truncated projective spectra.

Abstract:Zhao (2003a) first established a congruence for any odd prime p>3, S(1,1,1;p)≡−2Bp−3 (mod p), which holds when p=3 evidently. In this paper, we consider finite triple harmonic sum S(α,β,γ,p) (mod p) is considered for all positive integers α,β,γ. We refer to w=α+β+γ as the weight of the sum, and show that if w is even, S(α,β,γ,p)≡0 (mod p) for p≥w+3; if w is odd S(α,γ,γ,p)≡rBp−w (mod p) for p≥w, here r is an explicit rational number independent of p. A congruence of Catalan number is obtained as a special case.

Abstract:Using techniques in motivic homotopy theory, especially the theorem of Gheorghe, the second and the third author on the isomorphism between motivic Adams spectral sequence for $C\tau $ and the algebraic Novikov spectral sequence for $BP_{*}$ , we compute the classical and motivic stable homotopy groups of spheres from dimension 0 to 90, except for some carefully enumerated uncertainties.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, we study the homotopy type of the partially ordered set of left cosets of abelian subgroups in an extraspecial p -group. We prove that the universal cover of its nerve is homotopy equivalent to a wedge of r -spheres where 2 ⁢ r ≥ 4 {2r\geq 4} is the rank of its Frattini quotient. This determines the homotopy type of the universal cover of the classifying space of transitionally commutative bundles as introduced in [2].

Abstract:Let G be one of the classical Lie groups GL(n+1)(R), GL(n+1)(C), U(p, q + 1), O(p, q + 1), On+1(C), SO(p, q + 1), SOn+1(C), and let G' be respectively the subgroup GL(n)(R), GL(n)(C), U(p, q), O(p, q), O-n(C), SO(p, q), SO (C), embedded in G in the standard way. We show that every irreducible Casselman-Wallach representation of G' occurs with multiplicity at most one in every irreducible Casselman-Wallach representation of G. Abstract:We consider a generalization of Sperner's lemma for a triangulation $T$ of $(m+1)$-discs $D$ whose vertices are colored in $c=n+2$ colors. A proper coloring of $T$ on the boundary of $D$ determines a simplicial mapping $f:S^m \to S^n$ and the element $x=[f]$ in $\pi_m(S^n)$. For any element $x$ in this homotopy group we define a non--negative integer $\mu(x)$. For some cases this invariant can be found explicitly. Namely, if $m=n$ then this number is the Brouwer degree of the mapping $f$. For the case $m=3, n=2$ we found a lower bound for $\mu(x)$, where $x$ is the Hopf invariant, and proved that $\mu(1)=\mu(2)=9$. The main result of this paper is the theorem that the number of fully colored $n$-simplexes in $T$ is not less than $\mu([f])$. To prove this theorem, we use an extension of the Pontryagin theorem for relative framed cobordisms

The aim of this paper is to determine the fixed point sets of actions of the cyclic group of prime order on X. We also classify the orbit spaces of free actions of G = Z p , p a prime or G = S d , d = 1 or 3, on X and derive the Borsuk-Ulam type results.

Abstract:To the integral symplectic group Sp(2g,Z) we associate two posets of which we prove that they have the Cohen-Macaulay property. As an application we show that the locus of marked decomposable principally polarized abelian varieties in the Siegel space of genus g has the homotopy type of a bouquet of (g-2)-spheres. This, in turn, implies that the rational homology of moduli space of (unmarked) principal polarized abelian varieties of genus g modulo the decomposable ones vanishes in degree g-2 or lower. Another application is an improved stability range for the homology of the symplectic groups over Euclidean rings. But the original motivation comes from envisaged applications to the homology of groups of Torelli type. The proof of our main result rests on a refined nerve theorem for posets that may have an interest in its own right.

Abstract:An updated proof of a 1933 theorem of Goeritz, exhibiting a finite set of generators for the group of automorphisms of the 3-sphere that preserve a genus two Heegaard splitting. The group is analyzed via its action on a certain connected 2-complex. (The analogous problem for higher genus Heegaard splittings appears to remain unresolved.)

Abstract:We prove several positive results regarding representation of homotopy classes of spheres and algebraic groups by regular mappings. Most importantly we show that every mapping from a sphere to an orthogonal or a unitary group is homotopic to a regular one. Furthermore we prove that algebraic homotopy classes of spheres form a subgroup of the homotopy group, and that a similar result holds also for cohomotopy groups of arbitrary varieties.

Abstract:We identify seven new $192$-periodic infinite families of elements in the $2$-primary stable homotopy groups of spheres. Although their Hurewicz image is trivial for topological modular forms, they remain nontrivial after $\mathrm{T}(2)$- as well as $\mathrm{K}(2)$-localization. We also obtain new information about $2$-torsion and $2$-divisibility of some of the previously known $192$-periodic infinite families in the stable stems.

Abstract:For each $m\geq0$ and any prime $p\equiv3\ \mathrm{(mod \ 4)}$, we construct strongly chiral rational homology $(4m+3)$-spheres, which have real hyperbolic fundamental groups and only non-zero integral intermediate homology groups isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}_{2p}$ in degrees $1,2m+1$ and $4m+1$. This gives group theoretic analogues in high dimensions of the existence of strongly chiral hyperbolic rational homology $3$-spheres, as well as of the existence of strongly chiral hyperbolic manifolds of any dimension that are not rational homology spheres, which was shown by Weinberger. One of our tools will be $r$-spins. We thus investigate the relationship between the sets of degrees of self-maps of a given manifold and its $r$-spins, and give classes of manifolds for which the sets are equal.

On the Burness-Giudici Conjecture

Abstract:Let $G$ be a permutation group on a set $\Omega$. A subset of $\Omega$ is a base for $G$ if its pointwise stabilizer in $G$ is trivial. By $b(G)$ we denote the size of the smallest base of $G$. Every permutation group with $b(G)=2$ contains some regular suborbits. It is conjectured by Burness-Giudici in [4] that every primitive permutation group $G$ with $b(G)=2$ has the property that if $\alpha^g\not\in \Gamma$ then $\Gamma \cap \Gamma^g\neq \emptyset$, where $\Gamma$ is the union of all regular suborbits of $G$ relative to $\alpha$. An affirmative answer of the conjecture has been shown for many sporadic simple groups and some alternative groups in [4], but it is still open for simple groups of Lie-type. The first candidate of infinite family of simple groups of Lie-type we should work on might be $PSL(2,q)$, where $q\geq 5$. In this manuscript, we show the correctness of the conjecture for all the primitive groups with socle $PSL(2,q)$, see Theorem $1.3$.

Abstract:We prove that groups that are mod-p-homology equivalent are isomorphic modulo any term of their derived p-series, in precise analogy to Stallings' 1963 result for the lower-central p-series. Similarly spaces that are mod-p-homology equivalent have fundamental groups that are isomorphic modulo any term of their p-derived series. Various authors have related the ranks of the successive quotients of the lower central p-series and of the derived p-series of the fundamental group of a 3-manifold M to the volume of M, to whether certain subgroups of the fundamental group of M are free, whether finite index subgroups of the fundamental group of M map onto non-abelian free groups, and to whether finite covers of M are ``large'' in various other senses. Specifically, let A be a finitely-generated group and B be a finitely presented group. If a homomorphism induces an isomorphism (respectively monomorphism) on H_1(- ;Z_p) and an epimorphism on H_2(- ;Z_p), then for each finite n, it induces an isomorphism (respectively monomorphism) between the quotients of A and B by the n-th terms of their respective p-derived series. In fact we prove a stronger version that is analogous to Dwyer's extension of Stallings' theorem.

Formalising and Computing the Fourth Homotopy Group of the $3$-Sphere in Cubical Agda

Abstract:Brunerie's 2016 PhD thesis contains the first synthetic proof in Homotopy Type Theory (HoTT) of the classical result that the fourth homotopy group of the 3-sphere is $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$. The proof is one of the most impressive pieces of synthetic homotopy theory to date and uses a lot of advanced classical algebraic topology rephrased synthetically. Furthermore, the proof is fully constructive and the main result can be reduced to the question of whether a particular "Brunerie number" $\beta$ can be normalised to $\pm 2$. The question of whether Brunerie's proof could be formalised in a proof assistant, either by computing this number or by formalising the pen-and-paper proof, has since remained open. In this paper, we present a complete formalisation in Cubical Agda. We do this by modifying Brunerie's proof so that a key technical result, whose proof Brunerie only sketched in his thesis, can be avoided. We also present a formalisation of a new and much simpler proof that $\beta$ is $\pm 2$. This formalisation provides us with a sequence of simpler Brunerie numbers, one of which normalises very quickly to $-2$ in Cubical Agda, resulting in a fully formalised computer-assisted proof that $\pi_4(\mathbb{S}^3) \cong \mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$.
