Abstract:In July 2005, D. M. Davis posted several original numbertheoretic conjectures arising from his investigation of homotopy exponents of the special unitary group SU(n). The recent study of these conjectures and their generalizations by the author and Davis led to a strong lower bound for the homotopy p-exponent of SU(n), as well as a number of new combinatorial congruences some of which extend vastly some classical congruences (such as Lucas’ theorem) concerning binomial coefficients. Abstract:It is proved that any harmonic map ϕ : Ω →Sp(N) from a simply connected domain Ω ⊆R 2⋃ | ∞ | into the symplectic groupSp(N) ⊂U(2N) with finite uniton number can be factorized into a product of a finite number of symplectic unitons. Based on this factorization, it is proved that the minimal symplectic uniton number of ϕ is not larger thanN, and the minimal uniton number of ϕ is not larger than 2N - 1. The latter has been shown in literature in a quite different way.
Volume conjecture for $SU(n)$-invariants

Abstract: This paper discuss an intrinsic relation among congruent relations \cite{CLPZ}, cyclotomic expansion and Volume Conjecture for $SU(n)$ invariants. Motivated by the congruent relations for $SU(n)$ invariants obtained in our previous work \cite{CLPZ}, we study certain limits of the $SU(n)$ invariants at various roots of unit. First, we prove a new symmetry property for the $SU(n)$ invariants by using a symmetry of colored HOMFLYPT invariants. Then we propose some conjectural formulas including the cyclotomic expansion conjecture and volume conjecture for $SU(n)$ invariants (specialization of colored HOMFLYPT invariants). We also give the proofs of these conjectural formulas for the case of figure-eight knot.

Abstract:Let G be one of the classical Lie groups GL(n+1)(R), GL(n+1)(C), U(p, q + 1), O(p, q + 1), On+1(C), SO(p, q + 1), SOn+1(C), and let G' be respectively the subgroup GL(n)(R), GL(n)(C), U(p, q), O(p, q), O-n(C), SO(p, q), SO (C), embedded in G in the standard way. We show that every irreducible Casselman-Wallach representation of G' occurs with multiplicity at most one in every irreducible Casselman-Wallach representation of G. Abstract:We prove that groups that are mod-p-homology equivalent are isomorphic modulo any term of their derived p-series, in precise analogy to Stallings' 1963 result for the lower-central p-series. Similarly spaces that are mod-p-homology equivalent have fundamental groups that are isomorphic modulo any term of their p-derived series. Various authors have related the ranks of the successive quotients of the lower central p-series and of the derived p-series of the fundamental group of a 3-manifold M to the volume of M, to whether certain subgroups of the fundamental group of M are free, whether finite index subgroups of the fundamental group of M map onto non-abelian free groups, and to whether finite covers of M are ``large'' in various other senses. Specifically, let A be a finitely-generated group and B be a finitely presented group. If a homomorphism induces an isomorphism (respectively monomorphism) on H_1(- ;Z_p) and an epimorphism on H_2(- ;Z_p), then for each finite n, it induces an isomorphism (respectively monomorphism) between the quotients of A and B by the n-th terms of their respective p-derived series. In fact we prove a stronger version that is analogous to Dwyer's extension of Stallings' theorem.

Abstract:Let $PU_n$ denote the projective unitary group of rank $n$, and let $BPU_n$ be its classifying space. We extend our previous results to a description of $H^s(BPU_n;\mathbb{Z})_{(p)}$ for $s<2p+9$ by showing that $p$-primary subgroups of $H^s(BPU_n;\mathbb{Z})$ is $\mathbb{Z}/p$ for $s=2p+5$ and are trivial for $s = 2p+7$ and $s = 2p+8$, where $p$ is an odd prime.

Abstract:In this paper, we examine the homotopy classes of positive loops in ${\rm Sp}(2n)$. We demonstrate that two positive loops are homotopic if and only if they are homotopic through positive loops. As consequences, we can extend several results of McDuff \cite{McD} and Chance \cite{Cha} to higher dimensional symplectic manifolds without dimensional restrictions.

Abstract:Armed with the explicit computation of Schur Multipliers, we offer a classification of SU(n) orbifolds for n = 2,3,4 which permit the turning on of discrete torsion. This is in response to the host of activity lately in vogue on the application of discrete torsion to D-brane orbifold theories. As a by-product, we find a hitherto unknown class of N = 1 orbifolds with non-cyclic discrete torsion group. Furthermore, we supplement the status quo ante by investigating a first example of a non-Abelian orbifold admitting discrete torsion, namely the ordinary dihedral group as a subgroup of SU(3). A comparison of the quiver theory thereof with that of its covering group, the binary dihedral group, without discrete torsion, is also performed.
Homotopy groups and quantitative Sperner-type lemma

Abstract:We consider a generalization of Sperner's lemma for a triangulation $T$ of $(m+1)$-discs $D$ whose vertices are colored in $c=n+2$ colors. A proper coloring of $T$ on the boundary of $D$ determines a simplicial mapping $f:S^m \to S^n$ and the element $x=[f]$ in $\pi_m(S^n)$. For any element $x$ in this homotopy group we define a non--negative integer $\mu(x)$. For some cases this invariant can be found explicitly. Namely, if $m=n$ then this number is the Brouwer degree of the mapping $f$. For the case $m=3, n=2$ we found a lower bound for $\mu(x)$, where $x$ is the Hopf invariant, and proved that $\mu(1)=\mu(2)=9$. The main result of this paper is the theorem that the number of fully colored $n$-simplexes in $T$ is not less than $\mu([f])$. To prove this theorem, we use an extension of the Pontryagin theorem for relative framed cobordisms

Homotopy Cardinality via Extrapolation of Morava-Euler Characteristics

Abstract:We answer a question of John Baez, on the relationship between the classical Euler characteristic and the Baez-Dolan homotopy cardinality, by constructing a unique additive common generalization after restriction to an odd prime p. This is achieved by ell-adically extrapolating to height n = -1 the sequence of Euler characteristics associated with the Morava K(n) cohomology theories for (any) ell | p-1. We compute this sequence explicitly in several cases and incorporate in the theory some folklore heuristic comparisons between the Euler characteristic and the homotopy cardinality involving summation of divergent series.

The Iwasawa invariants of $\mathbb{Z}_p^{\,d}$-covers of links

Abstract:Let $p$ be a prime number and let $d\in \mathbb{Z}_{>0}$. In this paper, following the analogy between knots and primes, we study the $p$-torsion growth in a compatible system of $(\mathbb{Z}/p^n\mathbb{Z})^d$-covers of 3-manifolds and establish several analogues of Cuoco--Monsky's multivariable versions of Iwasawa's class number formula. Our main goal is to establish the Cuoco--Monsky type formula for branched covers of links in rational homology 3-spheres. In addition, we prove the precise formula over integral homology 3-spheres prompted by Greenberg's conjecture. We also obtain results on reduced Alexander polynomials and on the Betti number periodicity. Furthermore, we investigate the twisted Whitehead links in $S^3$ and point out that the Iwasawa $\mu$-invariant of a $\mathbb{Z}_p^{\,2}$-cover can be an arbitrary non-negative integer. We also calculate the Iwasawa $\mu$ and $\lambda$-invariants of the Alexander polynomials of all links in Rolfsen's table.

Betti numbers and torsions in homology groups of double coverings

Abstract:Papadima and Suciu proved an inequality between the ranks of the cohomology groups of the Aomoto complex with finite field coefficients and the twisted cohomology groups, and conjectured that they are actually equal for certain cases associated with the Milnor fiber of the arrangement. Recently, an arrangement (the icosidodecahedral arrangement) with the following two peculiar properties was found: (i) the strict version of Papadima-Suciu's inequality holds, and (ii) the first integral homology of the Milnor fiber has a non-trivial $2$-torsion. In this paper, we investigate the relationship between these two properties for double covering spaces. We prove that (i) and (ii) are actually equivalent.

Abstract:Let $K$ be a knot in an integral homology 3-sphere $Y$, and $\Sigma$ the corresponding $n$-fold cyclic branched cover. Assuming that $\Sigma$ is a rational homology sphere (which is always the case when $n$ is a prime power), we give a formula for the Lefschetz number of the action that the covering translation induces on the reduced monopole homology of $\Sigma$. The proof relies on a careful analysis of the Seiberg--Witten equations on 3-orbifolds and of various $\eta$-invariants. We give several applications of our formula: (1) we calculate the Seiberg--Witten and Furuta--Ohta invariants for the mapping tori of all semi-free actions of $Z/n$ on integral homology 3-spheres; (2) we give a novel obstruction (in terms of the Jones polynomial) for the branched cover of a knot in $S^3$ being an $L$-space; (3) we give a new set of knot concordance invariants in terms of the monopole Lefschetz numbers of covering translations on the branched covers.
Orbifold Euler characteristics and the number of commuting n-tuples in symmetric groups

Abstract:Generating functions for the number of commuting m-tuples in the symmetric groups are obtained. We define a natural sequence of ``orbifold Euler characteristics'' for a finite group G acting on a manifold X. Our definition generalizes the ordinary Euler characteristic of X/G and the string-theoretic orbifold Euler characteristic. Our formulae for commuting m-tuples underlie formulas that generalize the results of Macdonald and Hirzebruch-Hofer concerning the ordinary and string-theoretic Euler characteristics of symmetric products.

Abstract:We study the SU(3) Toda system with singular sources{Delta u + 2e(u) - e(v) = 4 pi Sigma(m)(k=0) n(1,k)delta(pk) on E tau,Delta v + 2e(v) - e(u) = 4 pi Sigma(m)(k=0) n(2,k)delta(pk) on E tau,where E-tau := C/(Z + Z tau) with Im tau > 0 is a flat torus, delta(pk) is the Dirac measure at p(k), and n(i,k) is an element of Z(>= 0) satisfy Sigma(k) n(1,k) (sic) Sigma(k) n(2,k) mod 3. This is known as the non-critical case and it follows from a general existence result of [3] that solutions always exist. In this paper we prove that(i) The system has at most1/3 x 2(m+1) pi(k=0) (m) (n(1,k) + 1)(n(2,k) + 1)(n(1,k) + n(2,k )+ 2) is an element of Nsolutions. We have several examples to indicate that this upper bound should be sharp. Our proof presents a nice combination of the apriori estimates from analysis and the classical Bezout theorem from algebraic geometry.(ii) For m = 0 and p0 = 0, the system has even solutions if and only if at least one of {n(1,0), n(2,0)} is even. Furthermore, if n(1,0) is odd, n(2,0) is even and n(1,0) < n(2,0), then except for finitely many tau's modulo SL(2, Z) action, the system has exactly n(1,0)+1/2 even solutions.Differently from [3], our proofs are based on the integrability of the Toda system, and also imply a general non-existence result for even solutions of the Toda system with four singular sources.
Homology of configuration spaces of surfaces modulo an odd prime

Abstract:For a compact orientable surface $\Sigma_{g,1}$ of genus $g$ with one boundary component and for an odd prime number $p$, we study the homology of the unordered configuration spaces $C_\bullet(\Sigma_{g,1}):=\coprod_{n\ge0}C_n(\Sigma_{g,1})$ with coefficients in $\mathbb{F}_p$. We describe $H_*(C_\bullet(\Sigma_{g,1});\mathbb{F}_p)$ as a bigraded module over the Pontryagin ring $H_*(C_\bullet(D);\mathbb{F}_p)$, where $D$ is a disc, and compute in particular the bigraded dimension over $\mathbb{F}_p$. We also consider the action of the mapping class group $\Gamma_{g,1}$, and prove that the mod-$p$ Johnson kernel $\mathcal{K}_{g,1}(p)\subseteq\Gamma_{g,1}$ is the kernel of the action on $H_*(C_\bullet(\Sigma_{g,1};\mathbb{F}_p))$.

Abstract:We compute the multiplicity of the irreducible representations in the decomposition of the tensor product of an arbitrary number $n$ of fundamental representations of $SU(N)$, and we identify a duality in the representation content of this decomposition. Our method utilizes the mapping of the representations of $SU(N)$ to the states of free fermions on the circle, and can be viewed as a random walk on a multidimensional lattice. We also derive the large-$n$ limit and the response of the system to an external non-abelian magnetic field. These results can be used to study the phase properties of non-abelian ferromagnets and to take various scaling limits.

p-composites of the main sequence of odd numbers as building blocks for $π(x)$

Abstract:The prime-counting function $\pi(x)$ which returns the number of primes smaller or equal to a given number is a topic of interest in number theory. An algorithm based on a cyclic group isomorphic to $Z/nZ$, the so-called $Z$-functions, was proposed in view to outperform its pieers. The approach suggests a time complexity $\mathcal{O}(x^{1/2})$ in agreement with optimality of a 2-D squared adaptive-recursive algorithm. The present work is a presentation of various approaches as ascending factorization, the main sequence of odd numbers and partial sequences, T-series, counting function of prime composites, $Z$-modular forms and combinatorial aspects.

Finite Groups of Symplectic Automorphisms of Supersingular K3 surfaces in Odd Characteristics

Abstract:In 2009, Dolgachev-Keum show that finite groups of tame symplectic automorphisms of K3 surfaces in positive characteristics are subgroups of the Mathieu group of degree 23 under mild conditions. In this paper, we utilize lattice-theoretic methods to investigate symplectic actions of finite groups G on K3 surfaces in odd characteristics. In the tame cases (i.e., the order of G is coprime with p) and all the superspecial cases, one can associate with the action a Leech pair which can be detected via Höhn-Mason's list. Notice that the superspecial cases have been resolved by Ohashi-Schütt. If the K3 surface is supersingular with Artin invariant at least two, we develop a new machinery called p-root pairs to detect possible symplectic finite group actions (without the assumption of tameness). The concept of p-root pair is closely related to root systems and Weyl groups. In particular, we recover many results by Dolgachev-Keum with a different method and give an upper bound for the exponent of p in |G|.
