Its primary aim is to convey knowledge and information accurately, making content precision and logical coherence the core for translating scientific and technical texts. This paper delves into the translation of The Romance of Reality, a scientific and technical book that explores the origins of life and the development of the universe through the presentation of various scientific and technical theories. The translator explores the applicability of translation shift theory, proposed by Catford in 1965, to the translation of this scientific narrative text (chapter one), specifically focusing on the two major types of shifts: level shifts and category shifts, including structural shifts, class shifts, and unit shifts.

Abstract:In the contemporary era, there is a burgeoning trend of intercultural communication among nations, prominently encompassing interactions within the scientific and technological (Sci. & Tech) domain. Within China, there has been a conspicuous dearth in the realm of Science and Technology translation, notably concerning the precise rendition of intricate professional knowledge across specific specialized fields and the requisite translation calibre. This deficiency has been accentuated by the absence of pertinent theoretical frameworks. Within this context, this research delves into the stylistic attributes of English for Science and Technology (EST) and elucidates translation strategies within the framework established by Yan Fu. Initially, the study scrutinizes the distinctive characteristics of EST, encompassing lexicon, syntax, and textual structures. Subsequently, it extrapolates these findings to the domain of Sci. & Tech translation. The ensuing section chronicles the evolution of domestic translation studies, culminating in the exposition of Yan Fus translation standards-namely, faithfulness, expressiveness, and elegance. The paper concludes by summarizing the targeted translation strategies for Sci. & Tech translation, encompassing meticulous preparation, the pursuit of precision, and rigorous review and refinement processes.

Abstract:: It is well-known that the development of petroleum science and technology still shows its importance despite the advent of clean energy resources. It is a subject that needs special training, let alone its translation. This paper intends to explore the abstract translation of the Petroleum Science and Technology English under the translation shifts theory’s level shifts and category shifts that includes the structure-shifts, class-shifts, unit-shifts, and the intra-system-shifts, which will analyze its typical characteristics like its unique words, passive and long sentences, discourse, nominalization, and the ways of translating them. All the examples are excerpted from the WeChat official account of Petroleum by the author, hoping to give translators a better understanding of the abstract translation of Petroleum Science and Technology English.

Abstract:The dynamic growth of international collaboration in the scientific and professional spheres leads to a wave-like increase in the volume of translations of professional and scientific texts and determines the relevance of the problem under study. Translators have problems translating abbreviations of professional terms. This paper analyzes the ways of translating English abbreviations in the field of materials science. As research methods, we used, among other things, the analysis of methods of translating English abbreviations into Russian, the study of articles in the field of materials science, the collection of data on abbreviations of professional terms and the comparison of the ways of translation of abbreviations of professional terms in the texts of materials science. The article reveals the features of the ways of translating abbreviations of professional terms in materials science texts. The main results of the research work are the identification of problems of translation of English abbreviations that the translator faces in the field of materials science, and the determination of the use frequency of one or another translation method. The materials of the article can be useful for researchers in this field, physics students and translators of scientific and technical texts.

Abstract:In this research, we established a small scale corpus with abstracts in English and Chinese from the law reviews of Taiwan. We identified problems found in these abstracts and classified them into several categories. After analyzing the problems, we found that translators are faced with numerous problems when translating legal texts: the influence of ordinary language, lack of reliable reference tools, insufficiency of legal knowledge, deficiency in the target language or source language, and the peculiar characteristics of legal language. These problems simply render the task of translating even more intricate. Strategies will be proposed to enhance the ability of legal translators and to help them to overcome these obstacles.

Naming by different principle is the main reason for the coexistence of synonymous terms. In China,free translation has traditionally been the main method of naming,but diverse ways in which foreign words are translated and used in the Chinese language today leave much for inquiry. From the sociolinguistic viewpoint the article analyses some problems of the current naming principles for terms and puts forward constructive suggestions for the standard of science and technology terms.

Abstract:From the emergence of the concept of the Internet of Things to today, China has always been very concerned about the development of the Internet of Things technology. The research and application of Internet of Things technology has become an important measure for the country to promote supply-side reform. The Internet of Things technology is the core innovation content of the country and an important measure to realize the smart city. This paper analyzes the cutting-edge research results in the field of Internet of Things abroad. This paper focuses on the application of IoT technology in English terminology research. This paper specifically analyzes the feature extraction methods of Internet of Things terms and studies the application content of Internet of Things technology in English-Chinese translation. We specifically conduct translation research on the content in “The Internet of Things: Enabling Technologies, Platforms, and Use Cases,” focusing on the translation of scientific and technological terms. As a kind of technical English terminology, IoT English terminology has the characteristics of strong professionalism and rigorous semantics. This article specifically translates the original part of the practice report and classifies the terms that appear in it, including IoT English terms for which canonical translations have been made and IoT English terms that do not have standardized translations. The research will further carry out the investigation and analysis work. The research is to identify the terms that have standardized translation, especially the detailed research of the terms of the industry field. This paper selects standard translations and summarizes the translation methods of terms from three aspects: abbreviations, compound words, and semi-technical words. The research results provide guidance for terminology translation. This article translates terms that do not yet have a canonical translation. Based on terminology characteristics and existing terminology translation methods, this paper proposes a variety of translation methods such as literal translation, decomposing and combining, and non-translation. The study described in detail with examples. The research results of this paper are expected to provide some reference for translators engaged in the translation of scientific and technological documents.

Faithfulness Fails to Fix it All: A Corpus-Driven Investigation into English Translation Issues in Abstracts of Chinese Civil Engineering Research Articles

Abstract:The primary concern in translating research article abstracts into English is to ensure accuracy and efficiency. This study established two corpora: CCEJAC (Chinese Civil Engineering Journal Abstract Corpus) and ICEJAC (International Civil Engineering Journal Abstract Corpus). The paper applied Hyland’s five-move model and established ten sub-corpora for comparative studies of equivalent moves in CCEJAC and ICEJAC. It was observed that CCEJAC and ICEJAC differ in both lexical and syntactic levels. Specifically, differences were found in the use of general academic vocabulary and bundles, as well as in sentence length and focus. It can be concluded that translation versions in CCEJAC prioritize preserving the literal meaning and the original sentence structures, which may end in undesirable outcomes. These contrasts are the main factors contributing to English translation issues. To address these, this study thoroughly investigated the English translation issues in each move in CCEJAC. The aim is to refine English versions of abstracts to be more concise and practical, in a bid to further facilitate academic communication between Chinese and international scholars in the field of civil engineering.

Abstract:This study explores translation strategies for Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) terminology within a cross-cultural context, focusing on the application of three strategies: literal translation, paraphrase, and domesticated transliteration, in the categories of knowledge congruence and knowledge differentiation. Based on specific terms from the "WHO International Standard Terminologies on Traditional Medicine," this paper employs literature review and case analysis to examine how TCM terminology can effectively convey its medical implications and cultural background in a cross-cultural setting. The research aims to reveal how different translation strategies can achieve the accurate transmission of medical knowledge in the translation of TCM terms, providing theoretical support and practical guidance for the international dissemination of TCM terminology.

Abstract:The article is devoted to the specificity of translating terms from scientific and technical articles on Computer Technology from Ukrainian into English. The results of the paper discover that the most frequent translation operation is a corresponding term. Less frequent transformations are concretization and generalization. The translator’s goal is to produce a target text that would convey the same information as conveyed by the ST; the amount of the communicatively relevant information in the TT must be the same as in the ST. If the goal is achieved, the communicative effect produced by the TT is equal to that of the ST.

Abstract:This paper explores the nature of technical terms from a semantic standpoint, gleaning insight from both classical and cognitive models. It also discusses this topic’s relevance and application to the interpretation and translation of key biblical terms. Anyone who has spent time reading an academic book or article has encountered an unfamiliar word, or even more confusing, a familiar word that does not seem to mean what it would normally mean. An example of this comes from general and cognitive linguistics, fields relevant to this study. The literature frequently uses terms such as “frame,” “domain,” and “context.” These terms often vary from their more general definitions, from their definition in a related subfield of linguistics, and even from the definition given by another author in the same field. This is just one manifestation of the flexibility and sometimes frustration of language. Any person or social group can select a word and use it for their purposes, regardless of how others typically use it. The Bible is no exception to this phenomenon. The biblical authors used some words in technical or specialized ways, with the result that their meanings were in some way distinct from more general usages.

Abstract:Abstract San Ti (Three Body , better known to English readers as The Three-Body Problem) stands out as the most successful Chinese literary work introduced to international audiences through translation. Previous studies have primarily focused on translating culture-specific terms and fictive terms in the work, arguing that the strategy of foreignization alongside occasional footnotes significantly contributes to its tremendous success. Techno-scientific terms, on the other hand, have received relatively little attention because their rendering seemed to be a straightforward matter of back translation. However, our case study reveals that the source-text-oriented translation strategy for culture-specific terms and fictive terms presents only a partial picture of the science fiction (SF) terminology translation in San Ti . It demonstrates that translating techno-scientific terms needs to be considered alongside culture-specific and fictive terms. Moreover, it provides proof that translating techno-scientific terms cannot be simplified to a process of back translation only. The translator sometimes deviated from the principles of equivalence, resulting in three different types of interlingual terminological shifts, which are discussed and analyzed in the current study. Given the heterogeneity of the target readers and the interesting paradox of San Ti as hard SF, these different types of deviation serve two divergent purposes: popularization and scientization. In addition to explaining the success of San Ti in the English-speaking world, the findings of this case study also provide insights into the unfaithful facets, contextual factors and research scope of terminology translation in this specific genre.
